I put a cox 049 on the nose of my 72" span Sig Riser. Fuel tank was way to big and if you filled it the motor would go for a full 17 minutes. Plane barely flew so you had to really nurse it until it gained some height, and speed. Tons of fun it was!
What amazed me was how much time I put on this little motor over the years and it never seemed to weaken. Amazing.

I have a Cox 020 with a wooden prop that my Dad bought in California in the 50s. I only remember running it one time as a teen but we never mounted it on a plane. I got a Cox Spitfire 049 powered when I was 13, never flew it though. It was gorgeous, had a sliding canopy and detailed cockpit. The fuel would soften the plastic if you didn’t thoroughly clean the plane with soapy water after running the motor. I replaced the wing once because of that. I still have the motor.

Probably thirty years since I flew one of them and I could still smell it....

They're called glow engines BTW. The original Cox .010 was designed and produced about 35 years before the low-brow term "nitro engine" ever came out. It started, predictably, in the car market.

Nice vid! I recall having to use nylon props and even conditioning them by soaking in hot or boiling water...the nylon is quite flexible but if they dry out they get brittle. Keep them in plastic bags. Also position the prop so on compression its horizontal. Can't wait top see a vid of a second run and the rest of the Taranis!

I personaly have a huge respect for the older inovater's who made this hobby what it is today...remember the old and wise way's...so we might hope to be as helpfull to the future entusiast's.

G'day Bruce... Yay Team...! What a little Screamer... Um, back in the days when Wheels had flat sides running all the way around them (On Trains, mementos of previous Emergency-Stops ;-p ) ; we used to install the Prop. to be Horizontal on Compression, for Belly Landers. "10 to 4" made for easier Finger-Flick Starts, but the Low Blade often dug into the Dirt... And, better a busted brittle Prop, than a bent Shaft & intact Blades, eh ? Ciao !

Nice video Bruce but that little engine is loud but fun.I have a little 0.61 wasp which has a throttle and sounds just as loud which is a pity as I can only run it away from the neighbours. All the best hope you and your wife are keeping well,David.

Why don't you mount a carbon landing gear with foam wheels behind the firewall of the plane. Then you would have a propeller saver and could land on the runway.

I thought they didn’t need running in because they were made to such fine tolerances.
An undercarriage would save that prop☺️
Amazing engines fro my childhood. I had a td 049 I used to compete with in half A free flight in a pylon Sloworm
Your model glides well. No throttling back if you can’t see which way it’s going!

Landing gear may make it a couple g heavier but may be worth it since you have an airstrip to land on. Not saying it's easy to dead stick a runway landing but it might still be flying if they were fitted as per the kit?

to answer the landing gear question...this project was for all intents and purposes to attain a weight that is below 100g so Bruce can fly without a spotter...

  • @hopeso
    @hopeso 11 років тому

When the engine is fully broken in, you may find full bore quite a handful. There are throttle sleeves available but these rob you of a lot of top end.
One product that delivers full power is a sleeve once made by an outfit called Microflight. It works well but the engine goes a bit lean at low throttle. It got a bad rap due to some controversy over beta testing in the field.
Looks like you're using the glass filled grey props which are brittle. Get the black, unbreakeable props.

noob question.. so when the motor is labeled as a line/free flight plane, it means it has no way to throttle. correct its just wide open till its out of fuel?
i think i want to play with nitro, sure looks fun.. i do love flying my mini quad.. but this sure looks fun.. yup. gonna have to learn to cover a balsa build.. as iv only built a balsa rubber band kit so far and had no clue how to or what dope was for the paper covering. so i just finished it up stained it, and made a cool static stand out of it.. and call it art and have it on my desk. i have 2 other rubber band kits that have 22" wing spands for future projects.. but ill look for a kit for now that has the control surfaces that ill have to build into the rubber band kits which i just do not know or have the skill yet.. which ill gain from building a few balsa kits. ( and since i live in the desert AZ, 115F means perfect time for building a model, i fly my mini quad in the early morning, or evening when the temps are around 80F.. or my blade nano qx in the house all day long :D if you do not own a blade nano, they are blast. even bought a 25mw elite micro 40Ch micro FPV camera for 40 bucks to give inside FPV flying a try this summer )
it looks like a little cox engine would work great on one of these balsa rubber band kits.
ok, tomorrow ill buy a iron, some plastic covering and start looking for a kit to build. you have motivated me bruce.. im building a 175 quad right now. so while the stuff is in the mail.. ill build that and get it off my table for my next project balsa nitro.. im sure ill need more than fuel etc.. so i lots to learn.. im assuming it will be a bit simpler compared to all the electric stuff iv been learning to build and fly mini quads.
i love this hobby. i wish i would of started when i was a kid.. but hey im 41 and a kid at heart.. so what the hell.
    chris.

There are these sunglasses with an HD can right in the center, I ordered one maybe that will help you to. To those who are ripping him a new one for putting a tiny engine on his plane, come on it's his plane if he wants to have a screaming thrust system, let him.
To Barry no zoom at least not full zoom right away, when I film with my cell phone I don't use the screen I note were my camera lens is and keep the plane at the brim of the phone lined up with the lens and don't use the screen, it makes it easier to track the plane.
