My favorite moment from the behind the scenes video was Don was in the recording booth and asked Tim how they wanted him to sing the song. Tim said, "You do it how you want and we'll adjust to you."

When Don MacLean received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year he had Home Free perform the song there with him...first time that had ever been done.

This was all filmed during quarantine. They had Don lay down his vocal track first, then each of the guys laid their vocal tracks down from their home studios, so they never got together with each other. Very cleaver editing then brought them together digitally. Great remake of a great song.

This video was done during Quarantine so the parts weren't all filmed in the same areas. It was definitely a feat. They said the beatboxer was close to passing out on this one. You really are Home Fries now 4 vids in one day. So excited you've found them.

This was magnificent collaboration with Don McLean. Who needs instruments when you have Adam Rupp and Home Fred's harmonies?

It's been said that Don McLean (pronounced
McClain) wrote the somewhat cryptic lyrics of this song from the viewpoint of many young Americans in 1959. That year a tragic plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper after a show they all performed earlier that evening. So, in the eyes of Don McLean and rock aficionados all over the world: This was the day that the music died.

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean just received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them.

The amount of hours involved with being able to actually record, has to be astronomical. Let's not forget that Don McLean approached Home Free to do this. I grew up listening to this song. I was born before this song came out, won't get in to how long before, but I remember hearing it on AM radio in a car with never used seatbelts.

This freaked out radio stations. They played it (the whole thing) but it was a struggle.
This was produced during quarantine. They are not in the same state even nevermind the same room in most cases. Just Austin and Tim who are in Nashville. The editing was very creative. Another one like that is Kenny Rodgers "Know When to Hold Them. Know When to Fold Them." Nobody is in the same room for the card game.

This song is a history lesson of popular music from the 50s & 60s. Somewhere on utube there is a breakdown of the meaning. Don McLean requested Home Free's assistance for the 50th Anniversary edition. Beautiful rendition.

Adam has a georgeous tenor voice, but rarelly sings, and when, it's mostley harmonies.
I love that Adam bowed out, when the music (drums) "died" and Don bowed when the song ended. Respectfully tribute to those whom has pased.
Did you noticed, that Tim was singing tenor in this?
And pleas use headphones, you will enjoy a cappella so much more.

Home Free is known for many things, including their AMAZING videos!
This was the second time EVER that Don McLean recorded this song in the studio. Cool, huh?! This past summer Don even invited Home Free to sing it, without him, at the reveal of his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame, and it's never happened before that an artist invited achiever artist to sing their song for the reveal. It says something not only about Don, but also how much he admire and appreciate Home Free.
They've collaborated with many not names at this point, including Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels (no video, though), The Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood (I think Blaine will love that), and many more with more to come, I'm sure.
Thanks for the reaction! 🙏🥰 Keep them coming!

If you like hearing original artists who have collaborated with Home Free, you might like HF's version of "God Bless the USA" with composer/original singing artist Lee Greenwood & Home Free in collaboration with The United States Air Force Band, and Singing Sergeants. HF with the Oakridge Boys' "Elvira" and Kenny Rodgers (shortly before his death) "Children Go Where I Send Thee". They went all Fan boys when they worked with these country super stars. BTW Tim Foust has a 5 octave range and Chance the baritone has a 4 octave range. Check out their cover of "Mayday" to get an idea of what these particular abilities can mean to the group's flexibility. Love your reaction so far.

I think the age in Don McLean's voice only adds to the poignancy of the song. I remember when it first came out (yeah - I'm that old) a local radio stn. - on request- would send the meaning of each of the lyrics. This song is so deep that it's little wonder Mr. McLean is a legend. Love your reactions and commentaries!

P.S. - One of the things I love about Adam Rupp (beatboxer) is that he never adds unnecessary things - his 'drumming' is so precise and just perfect for each song. There are live videos of him doing a beatboxing performance during Home Free shows.

If you haven’t learned our boy’s names yet, listen up; you already know the bassest of basses, Tim Foust, but you may not recognize him. He had his hair cut, tears, during the recent forced hiatus and let it go to natural, yea; handsome guy in leather and hat is Adam Chance, aka Chance, the newest man and the resident baritone, although he climbs into tenorville and sinks to bassdom . The two tenors are Rob Lunguist, low tenor with the magnificent beard, and Austen Brown, high tenor, and the group’s ‘heartthrob’ according to Tim. And, of course, you already know and love the heart beat of HF and ‘freak of nature’, Adam Rupp, aka Adam, one of the founding members and a beautiful baritone in his own right. I think he’s a tenor, he seldom gets a chance to sing so I could be wrong 😑
With that, I’ve subscribed and look forward to more reactions as you fall down the rabbit hole called Home Free.

I don't know if you know who guys are. The one that started singing is Adam Chance baritone (goes by Chance). Next Austin Brown the sky high tenor (long curly hair). Rob Lundquist lead tenor (beard and glasses). Tim Foust the super bass. And the beatboxer is Adam Rupp the only founding member of the group, around since 2000. He actually all most passed out while doing this song. Enjoyed watching your reactions to this song.

Home Free had to be uber creative during the lockdown. They each had to film separately and then put them together like they're all in one stage. AmPie is one of them. See if you can figure out which ones they were as some of them were obvious and others may not be. How about our Basso Profundo Tim Foust, singing in quite a higher register. Thanks for reacting.

Thanks for this. It's been a year since you reacted. I'm not sure if you are still doing Home Free. If you haven't done Children Go Where I Send Thee with Home Free and Kenny Rogers, be sure you do. Cool, cool arrangement and vibe to it! American Pie Don wrote from various tragedies in his life and America's life in the late '60s/early '70s, added so many pieces that made people think and try to figure out what he meant. He wrote about the music dying, but he was also talking about the Kennedy and MLK assassinations, about the Vietnam war and all the dying during that time. Then the young soldiers would come home and they were met with protests and anger and shootings on campuses with the National Guard over the war. It was a very hard 10 years to live through. I was a freshman when JFK was killed and then my husband later was in Vietnam for 14.5 months. It was just a hard time and Don's song became something of an anthem then. The radio versions were just part of this 8 mins, more like the normal 3.5 mins or so. But this was such a special moment to have Home Free asked by Don to arrange and sing this with him. Thanks so much for your great reactions! Hope you are still doing them. Take care.

Also.. check out another a cappella group called Voiceplay. My favorite of theirs is
    Oogie Boogie's Song
Also, their bass singer Geoff Castellucci has produced some great ones including

    The Headless Horseman
    Sixteen Tons
    Blackbird
    Monster Mash
    Thanks !

My mother owned this on vinyl. Halfway through the song there was a fade out, and you had to flip it over for the rest of the song. You guys might get a kick out of the group Voice Play, and their song Boybands in 5 Minutes. They are a fun acapella group that got their original exposure with Home Free on the same season of Sing Off. They arrange songs for each other sometimes.
