This one played out more as a Thriller / Suspense film. Will he break his back? will the jaws hold? is the forge going to explode? SO intense and yea as every other comment says this is also an exercise of Do as I say not as I do. 10/10
Michael, you are a Berserker of metalworking! I fully expect to see you running an ungrounded arc welder while wading barefoot in an inflatable paddle pool full of salt water and electric eels before one of us dies, but you’re still well up in my top ten pick of people I’d want to have with me when the apocalypse comes along. You’re a bloody marvel, and I have nothing but admiration for the quality of the work you produce, and the wit, determination and sheer bloody hard work that goes into every one of your videos. Look after yourself, my friend. You’re irreplaceable.
Somebody get in touch with Kent or South Bend and get them to sponsor this channel with a bench top lathe before mike either kills himself or has a hernia!!!!!
This really should be a drinking game. Take a drink every time he says it. Finish the drink if there is an accompanying lecture about why it’s a bad idea
I envy you so much, I to was a heavy to medium to light steel fabricator and with strong layout skills. I had to roll away from it instead of walking away. My body was invaded by Multiple sclerosis in 1999 and have become wheelchair and body lift dependent and robbed of my retirement Golden years & plans. My days now are spent just setting and watching others doing what I hoped to be doing in retirement . Instead I'm repairing lawn mowers and a You Tube & Face book junkie to pass my final days. I'm 66 years old now and getting weaker and no leg use what so ever. I enjoy all your videos and some others in metal shaping as well. God Speed and continue with the gift given to you.....Robert Perrigo.
@@hardfugoo1 Yeah I hear that's a hang-up for the bigger machines. There are some that don't need it, but I would guess they aren't big enough for what he does most of the time.
I completely understand your frustration at having to make shorter videos, I countenance it with... I really actually enjoy having to wait a little to see the rest of the build and it's much harder to find the time to watch them all on one anyway. What I suppose I mean to say is; Thank you for taking the time to do so because it means I am able to watch more of your builds! Which makes me happy! I am a free viewer because of a serious lack of funds for luxuries like internet and streaming services etc and only use UA-cam on my phone. I love all your work and hope one day to be able to do similar work! Thanks again for being awesome!
You give me hope for the future, Mike. I always recommend your stuff as “If you want to see a real man doing real man stuff, you gotta watch this guy!” Also, “He’s a mad Irishman with wild eyes who makes giant weapons.” I think there is a huge lack of emphasis on what being a man is about and I think you epitomize what that is. Real risks, real work and real rewards. Keep up this important work and maybe this generation of millennial man will see your stuff and actually see what men have done through the ages. Work hard, take chances and make something worthy of praise.
You have an amazing amount of luck in this video Mike. The whole episode with the drill press clearly stretched you close to your limits, but whenever it chose to wobble, topple or move on you, it still obeyed your wishes. The other 99% of us would have in no way been as lucky! When it began to tip as you were trying to get the second jaw back in to lock the box construction in place I literally exclaimed "Shit!" as experience told me it was about to get seriously pear shaped, only for it to miraculously stabilise as you managed to replace the second jaw at a slightly impossible angle! Possibly your most "do not try this at home" moment, and I don't say that lightly as there's a long catalogue of other incidents to contend. Now my heart has resumed it's normal rhythm, it's a fine time to thank you for your time and effort in making this video, and the rest of this series. Oh, and all the other videos, with the multi part one's I often forget to like all but the last in my haste to devour the whole shebang. Cheers Mike :) P.S. File a flat surface on a curved surface you wish to drill, before drilling with a stubby pilot bit so it will centre and bite properly when you bring out the final bit.
Table saw clip you looked terrified and confused as you should. Avoiding getting material jammed between fence and blade is the goal. Should have held the left side firmly and kept going. Little long for a cut but better that letting go. I'm surprised it didn't throw it in the short clip. I don't think anyone has show you how to use one but you'll learn fast. Great video as always.
Would it not be fairly easy to build a hood for your forge? Maybe a length of lorry exhaust, with a small section cut out of the base for the workpiece, attached to a spout of sorts (like the kind a garden incinerator has, but recycled out of sturdier stuff). This could be suspended on a swivel a couple of inches above the furnace and moved out of the way with ease? It might help prevent a fire in future, as there won't be so many floating embers.
Holy Crap Michael. I've seen you do some crazy dangerous things before, but that was the height of ingenuity. Even if you don't use a lathe for actual lathe things, someone somewhere must have a lathe cheap you can just use for rotary work.
When your drill press started to fall out of the vice I got instant flashbacks to every-damn-time I've been working on a project and thought it was safe to look away for a second to grab another tool. It's always that instant that something goes suddenly very wrong and either breaks a tool or the thing I'm making. Example I was using a bench grinder to make a small wood and stainless spoon for my friend last month, and my little anvil decided that since I was looking for my pen (to mark out areas to grind back to) that it was going to dive bomb my angle grinder on the lower shelf. Smashed the grinder apart and broke off a bit of the anvil. (it was a free railroad anvil so no real loss but it sure freaked me out and now I'm down two angle grinders for 2019 alone.)
So inspiring! If Michael can do so much wrong (and dangerous) and produce wondrous things maybe so can I! [The wondrous things not the wrong or dangerous parts!]
Someone buy this man a lathe.......the day he can no longer make enormous and insane weapons (due to self inflicted "tinkering" related injuries) will be saddest day in history
I don’t want to act like I know better than a guy who’s doing this for a living but I feel like it’s worth mentioning the types of steel the bits are made of: if it’s carbide then when they’re applied to metal they should have a very low RPM with a lubricant. If they heat up they’ll lose their sharpness very quickly and they’re going to become extremely frustrating to work with. Idk what your bits are made of but if they are carbide/hardened steel then I’d suggest a lower RPM so they don’t heat up so quickly. Long time fan of your channel btw, much love from the American West Coast(:
My small drill no longer has adjustable speed, the plastic wheels it came with broke so I replaced them with the Largest/Smallest steel wheel combo I could find local. The big drill I always keep at the lowest speed that it still has torque at, it has an annoying thing where at its lowest RPM, 300 or so, it completely loses all torque. 500 or so is the lowest where it will actually keep biting and spinning.
michaelcthulhu D: that sucks man. It makes me feel better knowing that you know though, I’m thankful for the reply too that makes me feel a little less stressed when you drill metal lol

For the sake of Mike's safety, I think we should all collectively pitch in & get him a lathe. A proper one. No more of this janky-ness. If there's a problem with space in the workshop, then we'll just have to build him an extension too.
Pretty sure no company is going to sponsor someone who took a drill press (Is that the name of the machine?) and turned it up side down, threw a lathe chuck in it, and proceeded to grind a piece of metal inside of said chuck.

Someone in USA land send Michael a lathe before he comes up with another zany use for his "poor mans lathe"
Pretty much exactly what I was going to type.
Let's start a crautfunding campaign. "Let's get Michael Lathe!" Or "better lathe then never"
I actually bought a big ol one for $150 at a machine shop. He should look into it. Annoying thing is most need 3 phase power vs 1 phase.

I gotta be honest, for about the first 6 minutes I was completely confused about what was going on.
wish youtube allowed the use of GIFs in the comments, this video has the use for so many
The logical evolution of this technique is to weld the chuck to a grinder shaft for dual grinder freehand for the next rounded part.
Don't give the man crazy ideas. He has too many of his own!
