In the chat someone mentioned "Are you guys going to look into the graveyard in Mississippi where the cops had buried lots of "transients," where it turned out several were missing persons." This sound right up your alley & also super disturbing. Please add to the list of future videos!
It's AWFUL and I don't know why it's not everywhere in the news. I only heard about it on Indisputable. One of the cops ran over the guy that ended up being the reason all the other bodies were discovered. It's almost like a gang of serial killers with badges running through that town.
Tony's book is excellent. I'm from the area and am very familiar with the case and the locations. My only critique of Tony's book is that it did not really go deeply into the suspicions about the 'bully-turned-pastor' and what role (if any) he played in the incident. The book was very respectful to the Yuba Five and their families. After Tony's book, I would suggest reading "Out of Bounds" by Drew Beeson.👍
A fantastic addition to the prior episodes. Between The Lore Lodge, Wendigoon and The Missing Enigma- you all provided a respectful and deep analysis on the mysterious situation of the Yuba 5. The biggest mystery is how they ended up where they did. There is, as of yet, no great evidence or even theory as to why they didn't simply drive straight home. They were motivated for the game the next day. They very likely would have wanted some rest. Again. Fantastic.
Who and what tells you they did not drive straight home to Yuba City? I think the whole story starts in Yuba City, not with some detour starting in Chico. And that's a problem - if you don't get the starting point right you don't have a chance to solve the equation. They had a quarter tank because they came from Yuba City: Yuba - Chico - Yuba - Plumas. In some Yuba episode, the "Lore Lads" mentioned that they had to use a different training facility. So there is a new element and someone in that new element found out they were going to Chico to see a basketball game. So that someone knew the would be in Chico, knew when they were roughly returning, and knew their route. They were chased up there and the whole thing was headed for some place where something had happened two years ago ("I should have done this two years ago already"). Did Mathias change his life around 2 years before this happened?
As a lady who survived domestic violence , and further stalking by the ex-husband for years, I thank you for digging deep into this . I know first hand that what the media feeds us about any case, is crumbs. To get the entire story takes a lot of work. But it's worth it. Because a criminal who gets away with atrocity , tends to repeat it. They may wait awhile , but when stress hits-- they will repeat. All the best to you.
I wish you all the best. Thankfully, my ex stalking me didn’t last years. When a person crosses the line into violence, the victim has few choices and all of them are hard. I was lucky. Everyone survived. Although I admit that when he died of natural causes, I was relieved. You are so right that there always more to the story than is known. My best to you in the future. ❤Brenda
You guys need to look at the Asha Degree case! She is a 10-year old who reportedly walked out of her house in the middle of the night, in February, in the middle of a storm. This case has never been solved. It is from Shelby, NC from about 25 years ago. I would love to see fresh eyes on this case!
I drive a 1960’s truck. Carburetors do not adjust for elevation/thin air or air temp. Both can kill an engine. If you can’t tune the carb properly you will be stuck in a blizzard.
This is totally off topic but as a lapsed Catholic (haha) I wanted to say how wholesome I think it is that you guys are not ashamed of your faith. It’s refreshing to come across people (especially content creators) who are open about their beliefs but don’t try to push anything on the audience. Thank you for the great videos!
I wonder if the reason they didn't turn on the generator or eat the food inside the trailer would be fear of getting in trouble? Like if they believed that they might be in trouble for breaking into the trailer and didn't want to add on to that by stealing food / fuel. Simply the fear of that could influence you in a panicked state.
Or perhaps they didn't realize what the generator was or how to operate it. If I got lost in the woods and came upon a cabin I would not know how to turn on / operate a generator. I would not even know what it looks like.
Most older vehicles I've seen you don't need to turn the ignition to read the gas gauge. That was a feature that manufacturers started doing in the 90's
The simple question that would answer almost every lacking detail in this story.. What drove them to the cabin/trailer and why did they almost willingly die there? Without that this story may never be solved.
Yep. That's the million dollar question. Of all the questions out there, the one you just posed is the MOST important one by a MILE. Yet there is also a $250,000 dollar question : Why did they drive 70 miles in the wrong direction, then "choose" to drive up that secluded, snowy, desolate mountain road? Why? I'm not so sure they chose to do that.
My family is from Oroville, California, which is within a few miles or so of Chico, in Yuba County, and in fact, I've fished the Feather River from Yuba to Marysville and all the way down to the Sacramento Delta so I was certain my mom would know all about this but when I asked her about it (a month ago) she had no clue what I was talking about!! So my intrigue has increased as I've been using the info to get her involved, hoping she might have a clue that will help somehow. Lol!! Fingers crossed!! Edit: having been raised in the area I have to add the fact that the area DID NOT normally get more than a few inches of snow each year, but, would get several feet of snow every 5-10 years so people in that area don't know how to drive it survive in the snow. In fact, I remember visiting my family, after moving away to Utah and getting married, and people were freaking out and trying to put chains on their tires with barely an inch of snow on the road, so... ya, snow is NOT normal for that area and they wouldn't have known what to do.
1973 NPRC Fire in St. Louis, Missouri. Your records may have been destroyed in the fire if you were discharged from either: 1) The Army between November 1, 1912, and January 1, 1960. The fire destroyed 80% of the records held for Veterans discharged from the Army during this time period. The fire didn't involve records for retirees and Reservists who were alive on July 12, 1973. 2) Air Force between September 25, 1947, and January 1, 1964. The fire destroyed 75% of the records held for Veterans discharged from the Air Force during this time period with surnames beginning with “Hubbard” and running through the end of the alphabet.
Such an underrated channel. Missing 411 but without the woowoo, without the blatant misrepresentation of the cases, and an abundance of respect for the people involved. Reasonable and logical. Love his channel.
Love this channel but Enigmas are far superior, everything of his is structured better, this is more of an overview, why don’t they have their original notes and research in front of them so they can actually quote the facts. Just some constructive criticism.
@@SimpleJack-zs7koLore Lodge does have an actual, scripted, comprehensive video on the case. This is just more of a podcast/'discussing with an expert' type deal
many places in California had gas heaters, but they were the kind that were built in, with underground gas lines from the gas company and pilot lights. So all most people did was turn it on and set the thermostat. So most of them might not know how to use that propane tank setup, though why not the ones with military training?? Or the one who hunted and fished with his family (little propane stoves are used when camping). And certainly people know to use metal barrels to make fires in.
It's interesting to note that the new Netflix documentary, Unexplained, covers this in its last episode. They interview family members and never once mention Schoens' alleged testimony. I find this very noteworthy, considering I personally believe his testimony is very unreliable. He's changed his story multiple times. In a courtroom, he'd be considered an unreliable witness. Most channels on YT include Schoen, and I believe it simply creates a rabbit trail of confusion for this case. Schoen was the town drunk who was known for tall tales. If you take away his testimony, this case is much simpler, in my opinion. I pray the truth is one day revealed this side of eternity for the sake of the family and closure.
Yeah, I noticed that too. Schons was not mentioned. I think it's understandable considering how unreliable and confusing his account of what happened that night is. He was such a shady character and I do wonder how much of what he stated is pure BS.
Thank you for having Tony Wright on the show. His book is very well written and researched. He really dug into this case. Definitely worth getting it. One question I have: Has it been established as fact that notes written by Gary Mathias (or someone else) were found in trailer? If so, what did these notes say? I've always wondered about this. If they were in the trailer no one left a letter or any kind of message explaining what happened? Regarding the basketball coach: His seeming indifference is odd though I have no idea why he would have wanted anything bad to happen to these men.
Regarding the notes: that was said by family members, but not by the police. Another mistery. Regarding to the coach, that's a good point, I believe that myself, but that doesn't indicate any connection with the case.
@@eduardocolella That's my understanding as well. I'm curious if there really were notes there in the trailer. If there were you would think the police would have mentioned it. That would be considered evidence. In Tony's book Gary Mathias's says she saw notes and recognized them as being in her brother's handwriting. As for the basketball coach, I think is behavior is odd, but it doesn't automatically make him a suspect.
If he wasn’t in Mississippi, then I would check with the county coroner’s office, police, pauper’s cemetery, hospitals, mental health facilities. Not every county contacts families of homeless, drug addicted, jail inmates and others. ❤Best wishes!
That is my greatest fear that when I die something will happen to my autistic son or he won’t be able to look after himself. If something happened to me he would probably starve to death with a house full of food, unfortunately these kinds of things just don’t occur to some people with special needs, especially if they are used to being fed rather than preparing food for themselves. I literally think about it at least once a day every day.
@mjllygraves3203 You sound well-intentioned so this isn't meant to be rude but informative. It's likey not that he can't prepare food. As someone with autism, we can forget we need food to function. I'm at college and there have been times I've gone a couple days without eating until someone points out that I'm more sluggish than usual
@@VRNC-kn5tfNo maybe, brother. You don't understand autism. Which is fine, why would you? We don't understand the rest of y'all, either. About the eating thing... it's safe to say that the... signals are different.
@@VRNC-kn5tfwe don't get the same signals, normally I can't tell I'm hungry until I'm shaking and almost sick from it, obviously getting sick everyday from not eating isn't something I like doing but I legitimately can't tell I'm hungry until I'm starving. My personal veiw of it is that my signals are the opposite of what they should be, things that bother me a lot wouldn't be something most people would even notice, but there's also a lot of things that really bother NTs that don't bother me. Like I can't handle my clothes having tags because it hurts so much but actually injuries I can't really feel.
My dad was a Korean War vet, Purple Heart, one of the very first special forces. All his records are accounted for EXCEPT his Korean tour…(they burned up in a fire in Honolulu) 🙄
it still happens a lot more often then you would think my brother is missing a bunch of records from his time stationed in fort drum and he was stationed there in the early 2,000's.
Circa 1:04:24 I don't think there needs to be some big conspiracy, that the 5 knew who fire bombed Gateway Project. It could have just been some jerk at the basketball game who saw they were special needs, and decided to give them a hard time and scare them. And the 5 went up the backroad to get away from him.
I’ve been thinking about these kids for years and years. I cant tell which of my ideas is where or when they ran into Shone, but as close as I can figure he wounded Madruga and ran them into the woods. What I can’t figure out is why none of the cops pressed Shone or kept him as suspect number one years later. It’s the only thing that makes me remotely question Shones direct involvement beyond his own story.
This is my strongest theory as well. Shones was shady on too many levels. Between his suspect story about why he was up there to his ever changing accounts of that night. The only validity to his story is that he went to the hospital a couple days later and it was confirmed he had a heart attack or his heart condition was acting up. I've read that in several places, but are we going off Shones's own account or did the investigators confirm that? Also, I get angry when people blame Mathias and his mental illness. He was stable and.on meds for 2 years and his dad confirmed he was on his meds when this happened. It would take a couple weeks of missing meds for him to start to spiral. Did he spiral after a few weeks? Quite possibly. But that's way after this incident happened. It's been 45+ years and I feel we will never know for sure. 😢 RIP, boys. People are still thinking about you and trying to solve this mystery for you!
I think there's more to it than that because they didn't end up there by getting lost. People have to understand that the road they were on was so out of the way and isolated. It's not the type of road you turn down when you're lost. I do agree he lied about what he saw though. His story definitely should have been more scrutinized by police.
@@chasjetty8729 The only issue I have with Shone being the one responsible or wholly responsible for what happened to them is that Madruga's car was behind his. I think the story he recounted to the couple in the car is probably closest to what happened. It still doesn't explain why they started to head up in that direction though.
Hello, I can't resist sharing my own theory about what happened to the Yuba County Five, so here it is: I think that it is painfully obvious that the boys were NOT out in the Plumas by choice. I think that they were coerced into that remote location against their will, and I think that they were probably dealing with more than one man, one of whom was riding in their car, and one of whom was driving another vehicle. I think that Shoans (sp?) was involved. For sure. I think that Shoans and another evil man decided to have some "fun" at the expense of these five innocent, and obviously somewhat vulnerable, young men. I think that Shoans and another man, or men, took the boys hostage, and drove them out into the middle of nowhere, probably to kill them. I think that when they finally stopped, the boys would have known that they were in terrible danger, and I think that Gary Matthias would have been the most likely to fight to defend his friends. He was a soldier, and a fighter, and had displayed physical courage numerous times before. I think that in the fight for their lives, Gary was shot or stabbed, and the other boys would have fled into the woods. Following this scuffle, the assailants obviously would have given up, and left. Shoans may have staged his vehicle being "stuck" and ridden off with his evil mystery buddies, planning to use the stuck car and the "heart attack" to account for his movements that night. I feel certain that Shoans was involved in whatever befell the boys. The killers would have disposed of Gary's body someplace, and left the other boys in the woods to die. The boys themselves would have been terrified that the killers were still after them, and they would have holed up in the trailer that they found, unsure what else to do. Eventually, they succumbed to the elements, probably in an attempt to get help. I don't know why so many people feel so confident that Gary ever made it to the trailer. Had he been there, he would have figured out a way to help them. He couldn't help them because he had already lost his life defending them, and that is why they escaped being murdered in the first place. That's it. That's my theory. Whatever actually happened, this story is a terrible tragedy, and it makes me heartsick to think about it. I can't stop dwelling upon it, however, because it's so upsetting that this happened at all, and it is upsetting that whomever did this to them, he or they, got away with it, free and clear. It's infuriating. The only thing I'm completely certain about it that they didn't enter the Plumas of their own free will; Gary wasn't responsible for their deaths; and Shoans had a hand in their destruction.
They almost certainly were coerced somehow. And it probably has a lot to do with their prior stop in the store, someone with ill intend must have seen them there. I'm kinda puzzled by Mathias body missing though. I wonder where it could be.
49:06 I believe that Gary Mathias would have been able to control his psychosis for some time. This because the life and death situation they were in. Studies of soldiers high on LSD showed that the leader of the squad held it together the longest. They theorized that it was because he felt he had a responsibility for his men and that made him "fight" the high longest. _(experiment was hold In the UK)_
I think someone chased them out there or otherwise coerced them out there. They probably were too afraid to start a fire because they were afraid whoever chased or took them out there would see it and come to get them.
Most podcasts stay away from discussing info from specials unless it’s part of an interview with someone on it. Idk if there’s a monetization issue for using the content or what. I saw this when that doc about the crazy ass chick who dated that guy a few times then created a fake stalker and destroyed his life. EVERY channel told the story as if they didn’t know about it because of the special.
What first comes to mind from hearing about this story for the first time is that Gary knew Shones daughter and perhaps during an unmedicated moment two years prior to the incident, possibly did something unwanted to his daughter and when they stopped for some reason Shones sees them and is drunk. He follows them and does to them what he said was done to him(chase them up the mountain so close they cant turn around) They get stuck in the snow and Shones approaches the car gets in an altercation with Gary and ends up by killing him. The strain from dumping the body gave him the heart attack. After he kills Gary Shones vomits as some do after the act. The other guys flee in fear...Shones said he saw 2-15 people when he got stuck on the road as a potential self defense scenario thinking the rest of the guys ran off to alert authorities not knowing their tragic demise. which is why Gary vanished and the others ran off afraid for their lives
I wonder if they picked up a hitchhiker (maybe the woman with a baby Schons allegedly saw) who was part of a carjacking and/or robbery scheme, and the hitchhiker led them out to the middle of nowhere until they got stuck and the red truck with backup for the hitchhiker could catch up? Maybe Jack took his keys out of the ignition when he realized something weird was happening. The potential carjackers could've scared the five men away from the car and the rest is history.
I suspect Shoan (sp?) who, iirc had a history as a small time drug dealer, was cornered by his supplier into payment at the convenience store. Shoan claims that the Boys took the drugs without paying, so the suppliers chase the boys, with Shoan in tow, which forced them to take their fatal turn into the forest. The Boys are chased in by most of the suppliers, while the leader threatens Shoan's life to not tell anyone what happens. Hence the inconsistant stories.
The boys being chased still screams to me. I know 'sports team towns' especially during the 70s & 80s. Emotions run high, ppl take things extremely personally. The boys were already not liked much because they were different. After a very hot game, all it takes is a very aggravated & impatient bf & his buds being held up by those same 'boys' at the very store the gf works, for an altercation to occur. Wouldn't surprise me those guys, the bf at least, was very respected, while 'the boys' were very unliked. Small towns will cover their own.
So, I'm not sure when they switched from typical to the atypical anti-pyschotics that in my experience are almost exclusively used today, but I imagine the medication almost half-a century ago would be quite different. I'm not saying Gary had a break, but it's something to be factored in considerations, since no explanation seems to explain everything.
Things I would definitely like to look more into myself but I'm sure are covered in the book are; Who was specifically targeted in the attacks on the program? The vehicles and vandalism, was it only staff members and company property ? Or were other patrons belongings also damaged ? Why was fire the mo? Was it for convenience sake as it would do a large amount of damage to property , or was it speculated to be an attack that the culprit got pleasure from? I guess my interest in that aspect seems like it diverges from the main case , but If things lined up properly they could be connected. Setting fires has been known to be more common amongst children and people who've experienced abuse, even sexual abuse. I don't know much about this murder that happened around the same time as the vandalism but could that be to keep someone quiet or as an act of revenge ? I don't feel great bringing up these things but those with intellectual or developmental disabilities make very "easy" targets. And unfortunately during this time there was a large stigma surrounding victims. While simultaneously having a huge amount of organized abuse going on in religious and charity based organizations. I hope this isn't the case but it's just not something I heard brought up often or at all with this case , and listening to how the coach handled and reacted the day after really had my alarm bells going off. It was his car that was targeted after all ...
talking about the coach and authority figures, it just reminds me that is the same time that the Hillside Strangler was operating in LA, impersonating police officers. So I think that fact was on the nightly news at the time or in the newspapers, so someone might have copied that.
Well well well Brownsville is just south of Forbesville where Mathias is said to have known people. Maybe it was just about pulling police away from the area where the car was found and there was some stuff going on up there.
Will lore lodge cover the “Lost girls of Panama”? Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon. I’d really appreciate your detail oriented approach to the case . Keep up the great work!
Wright seems convinced that Schon was involved in some way with the demise of the Yuba 5. I agree. And i have been saying this for years. Wright says repeatedly "what are the ODDS that Schon would happen to be in the exact spot, at the exact time that these men went into the woods, in the middle of the night on a remote mountain road". 👏👏 Absolutely!! It is impossible to say if Schon is 100% responsible to blame for the deaths of the Yuba 5. Impossible. No one will ever know. But here is what we KNOW: (1) he was the last person to see them alive (2) he admitted to being outraged by them following him too closely and shining their headlights in his eyes on that mountain road (3) he changed his story about that night several, SEVERAL times. Innocent people do not lie or change their story numerous times.
Shones (?) had a handicapped daughter. My guess is somehow one of the boys met her at some point and then hurt her in Shones’ mind. He drank at the bar to create an alibi. Made his way to Chico and forced and/or tricked the boys into following him out there. The watch found in the trailer is the key.
I’m sure it’s been looked into but what if they weren’t the ones driving the car at all. If only one person was in the car it would adjust the MPG and the wear on the suspension. They could have been hijacked at a crossroads miles from any phone?
My ex wife has schizo-affective disorder. She was unwell at one time so I took her for a drive. She was really happy until we turned off the sealed road when she got a bit nervous. The spot we were going to wasn't accessible so we went to a nearby nature reserve. When we got there she lost it completely, hit me, hit our son and ran down the road. She had decided that I was planning to kill her! We had driven past two guys who were bike touring and they were the bikies that I had hired to kill her . . . A psychotic break can happen that quickly and that seriously.
Hi from Ireland I watch all the videos about the yuba county five I believe they got lost took the wrong road and perished to the elements x there was no foul play may rest in peace X so innocent ❤
I still think the guy with the red truck was involved w/ Schons to get Mathias alone and un alive him. Schons had no awareness that Mathias would bring 4 buddies w/ him.
The reason the road didnt affect the car they said that only the last portion they drove was bad like 400 feet or so and someone in thr family said madruga was accustomed to driving on bad road as he had practice in past experience.
The time spent in the trailer...was probably horrible...scary..cold...dark.. lonely and depressing...its weird they didn't write a journal or something there...but it was probably very long dark and cold...alot of suffering went on there..no picnic in the woods...10 to 13wks..of frightening hell for them....strange they didn't makr more of a home out of it.. maybe the 4 never made it there...i bet they were told by whover NOT to come back down that road or to the car ... threatened by the criminals... Or it could have been a alien type abduction snd thry got thrown off in the woods...and were lost..like the elk hunters..
I have been curious about the fate of the car as well. I figure the Madruga family eventually got it back. But it's understandable that it might have been too painful a reminder to hang on to. The car is a puzzling aspect of this case. I've suspected that they may have been chased up that road into the forest. But it's an unpaved road. It has rocks, ruts, dips and holes so there's no way you can drive a car like that without damaging it in some way. Unless you are driving slowly, say, 10 to 15 MPH. Yet as far as I know, the car was found to be undamaged. So, the car must have been driven slowly and carefully up into the forest. So that possibly makes the chase scenario implausible? I've driven on roads like that. You can easily mess up your suspension, crack your oil pan, get a flat tire, etc. if you are going too fast. So, it's a little hard to imagine that they were being "chased" at a slow speed. But I really doubt they simply got lost and didn't know where they were going. Something compelled them up there but what?
@@ianmc87 I had figured maybe a chase started on the highway, with them being pursued and shot at, perhaps targeted for their intellectual shortcomings or saying the wrong thing to the wrong people. Perhaps they thought they had lost their pursuer (hence slowing down and avoiding damage to the car) in the mountain roads only to be spotted again and shot at forcing them to abandon the car and run on foot.
@@roflman Perhaps. If there was a chase, I would guess it started closer to home as they approached the Oroville area. If they were being chased by someone after visiting Behr's Market I would think someone would have noticed or reported seeing this on the highway. But what I don't get is this: If they were being chased by someone wherever it started, why didn't they drive to the safety of home? Or to a police station or any place where people could help them? This makes me wonder if they had picked up a hitchhiker who directed them to where the car ended up.
I wonder if shones was the Trojan horse in this case and had barely sth to do with it while the guy who actually was more involved and flew under the radars was the coach. He seems like extremely shady though i don't see his motives.
Shones story is so suspect. He said he had a heart attack, bur then was able to walk 7/8 miles to a lodge. That seems unlikely. I believe he knew a lot more than what he said. My understanding is that he died about 15 years ago.
If Gary walked south he would have eventually hit the middle fork of the Feather River, as long as I've lived here a few people annually slip into the middle fork and their bodies are never recovered
I think something happened before they left the convenient store....perhaps someone approached them in the parking lot and forced them to drive up there.....I can't think of any reason why they would have gone in the wrong direction.🤷🤷🤷🤷
Your comment made me think that perhaps it wasn't so much force but playing on their sympathy. Someone mentioned in the comments, I'm afraid I don't know who, that maybe the pregnant woman from one of the "stories" pretended to need a ride back home. She could have directed them up that route, where they eventually stopped. To exactly what end goal... I don't know. Perhaps for the car. Or, for money. Or, they had been singled out for a reason.
still no explanation for why the car window was rolled down and left that way. Doesn't match what was known about the fellow who owned it. It really would have made more sense for those fellows to stay in the car, run the heater a little and let their body heat do the rest. Then in the morning either get the car out of the snow or they walk down the mountain to the lodge. But if someone had their marijuana plantation on one of those hillsides, hidden between the trees, the boys might have accidentally stumbled upon people loading stuff. Still a real mystery.
4 thousand feet isn't really that big of a deal. I don't think it's going to effect the carburetor or gas mileage. Maybe these guys followed another car up the mountain that was familiar with the road. Would explain the lack of damage and fast time. Frustrating case. 💯🙏🇺🇸
other than improved stamina and endurance, military training might not help that much if the fellow served in Vietnam, very different climate and terrain, but any time spent hunting and fishing in the mountains around Yuba County would teach mountain survival skills to some limited extent. The small amount of fuel left in the vehicle would mean they hadn't refilled in either Chico or Oroville. And in California, back then, people would use chains on their tires for driving in snow. If the driver didn't have chains in his trunk or something to put on the ground in front of his tires to gain traction, he would need to shovel the snow. And for that local fellow to get his car stuck in the snow? well that doesn't make sense to me because that fellow would know about driving in the snow and should have that gear in his car's trunk because he lives so close and goes up there a lot. And it was February. And that fellow with the car story sounded more like someone with a really bad drink on, throwing up, going to the bathroom, needing an aspirin the next morning.
I don’t believe Gary (the one with schizophrenia and average intelligence made it to the cabin) their where a lot of resources that weren’t properly utilized. if he was there, I feel like the living conditions would be a lot better and they would have been able to survive longer.
I was thinking that too I think shoan and him had it out shoan censused him causing the boys to run which they made it to the cabin next day the two set out back to the car got censused once the one in the house censused, last one left and got censused from the elements. With shlons saying should have done that two years ago, which would make alot more sense if he did something to Mathias
Where would Shoan have hid his body, tho? I definitely don't trust Sloan and think it is quite possible he caused or at least witnessed what caused them to run up that mountain. Gary's shoes at the trailer wouldn't make much sense if he was killed by Sloan right off the bat. @remylebeau7258
If the boys scattered how did they get to the trailer? Heart attack story does not seem truthful. He used his history of angina to put him in hospital as alibi.
1:17:44 Saying oh you didn’t solve the murder of the last person that I was associated with so why are you trying to solve this most recent murder is so sus
IMO Mathias says he knows how to score a joint and wouldn’t that be fun. Mathias car followed the beetle up so far….then beetle stopped. That where all the entrapment happened. Weiher knew Guy w/ red Truck. The drug connection…..Schons did drugs and Mathias did drugs….no matter what his family said. All the guys were innocents except Mathias. He was the sketchy one…AND, he’s the body they never found….cause maybe he’s buried!
I tend to feel uncomfortable with the way people talk about the Yuba County Five in part because of the way everyone calls them "boys", and I know their families or whatever talked about them that way, but it's disrespectful (and then they ask why they couldn't have opened the other food -- and I think they misunderstand what intellectual disability really is, because it's not having a child's mind, but it can involve struggling to figure out "common sense" solutions to a problem you're not used to). I really liked that you (Tony) started by describing them as "friends" and "men" and then talked about them as adults.
i’m stuck on why they went up instead of back the way they came especially with gary tho he had schizophrenia he was military trained if the car was stuck he’d attempt to get it unstuck but why were they there and the heart attack guy doesn’t sit well perhaps it was plan gone horribly wrong to detain them from attending the up coming game. why wasn’t their coach concerned about his team members. imo most coaches would participate in some way in searching has anyone researched if there’s connection with the coach and heart attack story guy. and did heart attack guy really have a cabin up there has this been researched and did he have a job or did he do “odd” jobs that really can’t be proved
there are a bunch of rental cabins up there, but for me that always felt more like a convenient lie that shone told rather then the truth, i also don't think he had a part in getting the 5 up there but i do think he knows more about what happened, my guess is he knows who caused it but is afraid if he ever told then they would kill him or someone in his family, which for me accounts for him going back on the red truck thing after 2 interviews. If you look into him at all he is a pretty Notorious drunk that pretty much everyone hates, the way it plays out in my head is he got blasted and after getting kicked out of a bunch of bars he drove around till he got stuck in the woods ( he even mentions at one point taking a dump outside his car and a ranger corroborates this later.), and then if the red truck thing is to be believed my reason for the 5 being up there was Gary trying to get drugs and a group who had a longstanding bone to pick with Gary tricked the 5 up there under the guise of trying to make a sale and forced them into the woods.
Guy probably had an affair and met his mistress up there. The kids saw the guy at the gas station with his wife beforehand. On the mountain they get stuck and looking for help they see the guy again only now with his mistress. Guy gets panicked and he pulled a gun. They panik and run into the woods. To cover his tracks he fakes a heart attack. Kids bunker down in the woods because they are fearing for their life's getting hunted down.
The car heater runs off battery, which doesnt use gas. The heater being on cannot affect gas mileage, whoever thought this was a thing needs to retake HS science. Other things DO affect mileage, and they r numerous. Road conditions (as spinning tires while doing little work uses more gas), oil condition and air filter condition, engine condition, tire pressure. Dont make assumptions based off gas in tank, too many variables. The biggest being u dont know how much gas they initially put in. I put $15 every 3 days in tank. If im driving 80 miles ill put $25. Far less than a full tank because i know its enough gas to get me there n back.
Car heaters are not running off of a battery other than the fans blowing the air. The hot air is generated from the running engine which requires gas to run.
Car heaters for water-cooled engines run the engine coolant through a heater core to transfer the heat and then use electric blowers or fans to move the heat into the passenger compartment.
In the chat someone mentioned "Are you guys going to look into the graveyard in Mississippi where the cops had buried lots of "transients," where it turned out several were missing persons." This sound right up your alley & also super disturbing. Please add to the list of future videos!

I never even heard of that! Was there a creator on UA-cam who spoke about it that I could watch?

A fantastic addition to the prior episodes. Between The Lore Lodge, Wendigoon and The Missing Enigma- you all provided a respectful and deep analysis on the mysterious situation of the Yuba 5.
The biggest mystery is how they ended up where they did. There is, as of yet, no great evidence or even theory as to why they didn't simply drive straight home. They were motivated for the game the next day. They very likely would have wanted some rest.
Again.
Fantastic.
Have you seen nexpos video about it?
I hope youre happy and safe now
I wish you all the best.
❤Brenda

I wonder if the reason they didn't turn on the generator or eat the food inside the trailer would be fear of getting in trouble? Like if they believed that they might be in trouble for breaking into the trailer and didn't want to add on to that by stealing food / fuel. Simply the fear of that could influence you in a panicked state.
or, fear of being found if they were being attacked
Or perhaps they didn't realize what the generator was or how to operate it. If I got lost in the woods and came upon a cabin I would not know how to turn on / operate a generator. I would not even know what it looks like.
Most older vehicles I've seen you don't need to turn the ignition to read the gas gauge.
That was a feature that manufacturers started doing in the 90's
Indeed! I remember checking if I needed gas in my old VW by simply opening the door.
NEED MORE YUBA 5 PLEASE!!😮
“It’s a long walk!” That made me laugh so much for some reason! 🤣😅
Your records may have been destroyed in the fire if you were discharged from either:
1) The Army between November 1, 1912, and January 1, 1960.
Is that only for Missouri or all veterans of that time frame? ❤

We’ve been dabbling in it a bit with the Smiley Face stuff
Also how they split is logical in a sense that two who had training splited their responsibility over others.
many places in California had gas heaters, but they were the kind that were built in, with underground gas lines from the gas company and pilot lights. So all most people did was turn it on and set the thermostat. So most of them might not know how to use that propane tank setup, though why not the ones with military training?? Or the one who hunted and fished with his family (little propane stoves are used when camping). And certainly people know to use metal barrels to make fires in.
I feel like if you’re desperate for heat you could most likely try until you figured it out
The snow burying the tank makes sense, but not making a fire doesn't make sense.

Just sticking my nose in. Could you involve him with food prep somehow? Even just a pb&j. I think everyone should be as self sufficient as they can.
@@keithgarner2759Maybe I just don’t understand autism but how are you smart enough to go to college but also forget that you have to eat?

1:15:42 Bobby bizup went missing in Colorado near Estes park.
I think heart attack guy chased them for some reason and scared them into the woods, then made his BS story up.
Yeah he's the piece that doesn't fit. It's too much of a coincidence that he drove up a snowy mountain in the middle of the night and so did the boys.
@@chasjetty8729 The only issue I have with Shone being the one responsible or wholly responsible for what happened to them is that Madruga's car was behind his. I think the story he recounted to the couple in the car is probably closest to what happened. It still doesn't explain why they started to head up in that direction though.
Hello, I can't resist sharing my own theory about what happened to the Yuba County Five, so here it is:
I think that it is painfully obvious that the boys were NOT out in the Plumas by choice.
The problem here is that Schoans was drinking in a couple bars prior to going up the mountain. Who got them to totally bypass Yuba City?
I agree , they were coerced or outright kidnapped somehow.
I thought Gary's shoes were found at the trailer
Thank you, I too felt the same way as you.
They almost certainly were coerced somehow. And it probably has a lot to do with their prior stop in the store, someone with ill intend must have seen them there.
I'm kinda puzzled by Mathias body missing though. I wonder where it could be.
A big fact was left out in my opinion is Shones (the guy who had the heart attack) has a daughter with disabilities too.
Doesn’t follow that he didn’t have something to do with the deaths. He may have resented his daughter.
Unlikely!@@NanaBren
49:06 I believe that Gary Mathias would have been able to control his psychosis for some time. This because the life and death situation they were in.
Studies of soldiers high on LSD showed that the leader of the squad held it together the longest. They theorized that it was because he felt he had a responsibility for his men and that made him "fight" the high longest. _(experiment was hold In the UK)_
Gary was on his medication as prescribed, for sure. Has been officially confirmed.
Gary was unalived by some bad people don’t forget about the shell casings found around the car
I think someone chased them out there or otherwise coerced them out there. They probably were too afraid to start a fire because they were afraid whoever chased or took them out there would see it and come to get them.

@@jeffrey.a.hanson oh ok I see.
Road rage seems like one of the few reasonable explanation for how the ended up there.
New glasses, who dis?
Love your pup!
I love that you joked about editing out where the call messed up for a few minutes, then forget to actually edit it out lmao
Archie's such a good boy! Really long lead-up to the good part, though. ;)
Things I would definitely like to look more into myself but I'm sure are covered in the book are;
Who was specifically targeted in the attacks on the program?

Aiden speculated around this idea in the last Lore Lodge episode on the Yuba 5. It has merit.
the trailers were pretty heavily used during the summer though, so the watch could have easily been left by someone during the pervious season.
I’m sure it’s been looked into but what if they weren’t the ones driving the car at all. If only one person was in the car it would adjust the MPG and the wear on the suspension. They could have been hijacked at a crossroads miles from any phone?

The spot we were going to wasn't accessible so we went to a nearby nature reserve. When we got there she lost it completely, hit me, hit our son and ran down the road. She had decided that I was planning to kill her! We had driven past two guys who were bike touring and they were the bikies that I had hired to kill her . . .
A psychotic break can happen that quickly and that seriously.
Hi from ireland i watch all tk
*its Lordin' time*
Somebody bullied them, and told them to go up there, and they did it. Just my opinion.
Does anyone know what became of the Montego? Was it sold or kept with the family? I feel like there may be some overlooked clues with it
I have been curious about the fate of the car as well.
The Montego was dismantled. I believe this happened a year and-a-something after the incident.
Also, a good chunk of the questions you guys asked tonight or answered in that Netflix show
1:20:34 Wasn't Scout Master a villian in a Simpsons rendition of Batman?
Who returned on Saturday/sunday?
Definitely approve of not using an AI voice❤
Who does a drug deal in the middle of nowhere. That maybe happens in movies. But in reality they happen in the middle of the day in public places.
Large quantities would be likely to be out of the way so to speak
The guys Gary got in a fight with, did anyone check to see if they had a partner with a baby?
still no explanation for why the car window was rolled down and left that way.
Listen to yourself.... marijuana plants and snow....don't mix!
@flatsquatch that's why they were loading it up. Before more snow could ruin the crop
You should name yourselves Lord Lads Lounge. Other wise know as, Triple L
🌲 🌲
So someone firebombed their organization and then they end up dead. Hmmm who could it have been?
waaaait, obvious connect to director murder, or that Gary fight opponent - how are these not mentioned til now
4 thousand feet isn't really that big of a deal. I don't think it's going to effect the carburetor or gas mileage. Maybe these guys followed another car up the mountain that was familiar with the road. Would explain the lack of damage and fast time. Frustrating case. 💯🙏🇺🇸
Regarding the time - all we have is Shoen's word on that. He could be lying or simply wrong.
other than improved stamina and endurance, military training might not help that much if the fellow served in Vietnam, very different climate and terrain, but any time spent hunting and fishing in the mountains around Yuba County would teach mountain survival skills to some limited extent.
Watching this 3 days late and absolutely nothing happened at 45:33 because it was edited out 😉
I don’t believe Gary (the one with schizophrenia and average intelligence made it to the cabin) their where a lot of resources that weren’t properly utilized. if he was there, I feel like the living conditions would be a lot better and they would have been able to survive longer.
Do we know what anti-pyschotics he was on or were likely to be on in 1979?
If the boys scattered how did they get to the trailer? Heart attack story does not seem truthful. He used his history of angina to put him in hospital as alibi.
1:17:44 Saying oh you didn’t solve the murder of the last person that I was associated with so why are you trying to solve this most recent murder is so sus
It’s blurry
Reach out to the Rippaverse.. fastest growing meanwhile UNFORTUNATELY other companies are dying
i’m stuck on why they went up instead of back the way they came especially with gary tho he had schizophrenia he was military trained if the car was stuck he’d attempt to get it unstuck
but why were they there and the heart attack guy doesn’t sit well perhaps it was plan gone horribly wrong to detain them from attending the up coming game. why wasn’t their coach concerned about his team members. imo most coaches would participate in some way in searching
has anyone researched if there’s connection with the coach and heart attack story guy. and did heart attack guy really have a cabin up there has this been researched and did he have a job or did he do “odd” jobs that really can’t be proved
there are a bunch of rental cabins up there, but for me that always felt more like a convenient lie that shone told rather then the truth, i also don't think he had a part in getting the 5 up there but i do think he knows more about what happened, my guess is he knows who caused it but is afraid if he ever told then they would kill him or someone in his family, which for me accounts for him going back on the red truck thing after 2 interviews.
22:10 he defecated at his car. Apparently due to his heart attack 🙄
💔🤎💩
Guy probably had an affair and met his mistress up there. The kids saw the guy at the gas station with his wife beforehand. On the mountain they get stuck and looking for help they see the guy again only now with his mistress. Guy gets panicked and he pulled a gun. They panik and run into the woods. To cover his tracks he fakes a heart attack. Kids bunker down in the woods because they are fearing for their life's getting hunted down.
Is the blond guy mute?
This. Again
@@VRNC-kn5tf Yes. And in any case the drained battery draws more power from the engine meaning it ultimately uses gas
Car heaters for water-cooled engines run the engine coolant through a heater core to transfer the heat and then use electric blowers or fans to move the heat into the passenger compartment.
