I know this is gonna come up with this video so...in regards to Xi'an Famous Foods in NYC, I think their "burgers" are ok but everything else is very subpar. MUCH better noodles and Liang Pi elsewhere. New York Food Court and New World Mall just to name a few...
Mike, after watching your video I told my friend to cancel all his plans the next day so we could try Joojak. It did not disappoint. We loved everything we tried! The owner admitted that business picked up a lot and at first they didn't know why. But people have been telling her, it is because you recommended it. Thanks so much!
You NEED that very specific kind of chili sauce for that lamb dish and regular hot oil just isnt the same in that situation...I still have feelings for hot oil tho :/
Hi Dumpling, I have lived in Vancouver for the last nine yrs, and I only heard the joojak restaurant until I watched your video! Shame on me. We went to the restaurant today, just as you expected, it was packed! The poor lady/owner was keeping saying sorry to the lined up customers and saying she didn't expect this at all! Then some guy mentioned that you posted this video here, then almost every other customer was nodding their head! Looks like they need to hire some helpers soon, currently the place is just a tiny family operation without any waiters, mamma pappa place not ready for the volume that your video pulled in. Food is authentic, lamb soup and koushui chicken were so good, we had to take the sauce back home! Thanks for your recommendation. Next time come to Vancouver, you should give us some opportunity to show our appreciation!:)
Dude, we went to Joojak restaurant tonight and they were packed to the point were they had to turn people away. It looks like they've never been that busy before. Good job. Everyone in there was talking about your video about the restaurant haha. I even got the same seat as you with the cool background.
Joojak is definitely not very well known and you can easily drive by it without noticing it at all but it is a cut above the rest. The owner really knows her stuff and is very friendly and it definitely shows that she cares about her food. Glad you enjoyed Joojak Mike and welcome to Vancouver.
We went to Joojak Restaurant today (the last restaurant in your video) and it was fantastic! The food (we ordered everything you ordered) was great and the service was amazingly friendly. The owner and her daughter chatted with us a lot, luckily the restaurant wasn't too busy when we went. Thank you so much for the recommendation!
I love how enthusiastic and passionate you are about food, especially food that's a part of your heritage. I'm Costa Rican myself and I can't tell you how much I relate to this with finding and analyzing claimed authentic food to see if it's truly Central American. Keep it up with the awesome videos :D
Have probably seen 200 or so of your videos. This has to be your best so far......a great comparative job of exceptional authentic food, rounded out by your close knowledge of Xi'an local dishes. Thanks!
Oh you're from Xi'an, so that's where your love for spicy food comes from :D I once tried yangroupaomuo in xi'an, and it was such a huge bowl, and I could just eat half of it, and I normally eat a lot...
I live in San Diego. I went out of my way to find a Xian Restaurant here and it is now my favorite food, it is so good, so comforting. Thank you Mikey Chen!!!
Just went to joojak for lunch; the food is superb and the service was amazing! So delicious. My friend and I had the same thing you had, and my god, so much flavour! I'm already looking forward to going there again. Thanks mike for the wonderful recommendation. What a great discovery!
This place has lots of people now ever since you uploaded the video. I talked to the family and they're very happy and blessed for you uploading the video.
Sometimes it's those little out of the way places that just leap up with the quality. I remember, oh it is almost 35 years ago when we moved to Victoria, we were told to go to this one particular place in China town. Yes, even Victoria has a China Town. The place looked like a little greasy spoon joint. Dull, drab. Old beat up furniture, dull beat up floor. Everything was clean, just blah. Then the food hit the table and we understood. Every penny went into making the best meal possible. We had the same experience years later at a place called Chez Nam in Ottawa. It was in a dingy basement,it was furnished in tasteless garage sale. Again, everything was clean, the staff were friendly and quick. The food was an explosion of freshness and yumminess. We would sit back at the end of a meal and just grin and pat our tummies.
Victorias Chinatown was here in 1853 before Vancoucer Chinatown. They eventually spread out to different parts kn North America and Van was 1886 when it accumulated about 90 Chinese residents which came to be known as Chinatown. Which place are you talking about in Victoria?
Thanks Mike! For reasons I won't disclose I experienced mid to late stage starvation in my early years. Now I can't get enough food. The weirder and wilder the better! Some day I hope to follow in at least some of your footsteps experiencing culinary bliss.
When I went to Xi'an, I ate at a place called 'First Noodle Under The Sun'. Their spinach noodle dish and biang biang noodle (not sure on spelling) were incredible!
man you rock i started with you on beyond science, only just realized you have a food channel. a bro after my own heart spice always wins. 1000 thumbs up!
So you may never see this because your videos are so popular, but if you could interview/question the chefs when you go out that would be awesome. Love the content keep it up
My husband and I went to visit my parents in Shanghai in 2007 and while we were there we did some traveling to Beijing and Xi‘an. By far the best food we had during our entire month in China was in Xi‘an! The flavors were amazing and fragrant! Unfortunately in Kansas City, you don't find food from this area of China. I think I might have to try my hat at making your noodle recipe. I feel fortunate to have been able to travel to your birthplace! It is a gorgeous city and we soaked up all the culture and history we could along with some pretty great meals. Thank you for this video. It brought back some wonderful food memories.
Having lived in Yanliang (just outside Xi'an) for 5 years I agree that the food is the best .......... I loved the many local & farmers dishes ....... many nights I would eat noodle & Chinese Burger, if i went to local food outlets it would be Egg & Tomatoes, Broccoli & Garlic, Small Potato and Beef stew type dish, Ma La Dou Fu, Grilled Green Peppers etc. etc. making my mouth water as i recall each dish
Are you going to visit any other authentic chinese restaurants in Vancouver? i moved here a few years ago but i haven't really explored the chinese food restaurants here xD;;
my first trip abroad was to Shanghai, we took a side trip to xi'an. It was awesome, so much delicious food, went to the muslin market, had great food for super cheap. was a great first abroad trip for me. Wish i knew mike was there before so i could get some insight, granted i had a great trip regardless
Before watching your videos, I thought I was doing a good job getting of my comfort zone. Damn was I wrong! I love trying different types of Chinese food but I've yet to try what you've shown in your video. Thanks for introducing us all this delicious food! I'll hit up these places soon! I'm only a stones throw away from Canada and go up on a frequent basis. 👍🏼
Maaan, I should have seen your video before I went to Vancouver... XD I was visiting Vancouver Chinatown with my parents and at the time we got hungry we were like at the farest corner of it and there were just some really shabby Chinese restaurants... Damn, looks like I gotta go again! ^^
Chinatown is the shadiest place in Vancouver, and one of the shadiest places in all of north america. It is the one place Chinese people avoid pretty much at all costs. When you go to vancouver, you want to go to EVERYWHERE except chinatown.

Hey, sorry your visit wasn't that great here :( Next time you come back to Chinatown in Vancouver, you should visit these places for food/coffee: - Phnom Penh (Dry Noodles, Chicken Wings) - Fat Mao Noodles - Ramaen Butcher - Bestie (Currywurst) - Nicli Antica Pizzeria (Mushroom Pizza) - New Town Bakery (Bola Bola buns) - Meat and Bread (porchetta sandwich) - Revolver (coffee) - Purebread (Pudgie Pie, also serves coffee) - Donair Dude .. just to name a few places I like going to! :)
Went to Joojak restaurant yesterday, noodle and burgers were all sold out😂 But I tried the chilli chicken. It was amazing. And the owner was really friendly!
The Xi'an noodle place at Richmond public market is my FAVOURITE! The have the best liangpi ever! Cant believe it that you finally went there. I always like to mix regular liangpi with majiang which is sesame sauce.
there's a place on spadina by u of t.. they make the best kamjatang. Ever since I came back to vancouver, I've been missing it so much. Too bad i forgot the name... but it's like a basement, you have to go down stairs. Oh, they also have an AMAZING potato side dish, like seriously, I sometimes go there and order food just for the potato side dish. There also used to be a great shan xi restaurant by dundas and spadina... too bad the chef murdered the waitress, was sent to jail, and the new chef is subpar... :(
i wanted to state this out: ever sense i have been wathcing ur videos, ive been really interested in trying more asian dishes. im not a big meat person or noddle person, but every time i watch u eat them (especially the soup dumplings) i honestly really want to try it. you sir, are helping me try foods. thank you.
We just got back from Xi'an a couple of months ago and I lived on their burgers. We were coming back from Tibet and had an over abundance of noodles ( Breakfast, second breakfast, lunch and dinner some days) Though they were delicious we were craving anything but noodles. The burgers were such a nice change for quick street food.
Joojak is pretty unassuming looking at first glance. I've passed it for many many years favouring my usual go-to neighbouring restaurants instead, the Joyce-Kingsway area is spoiled for choice. But I'm glad that I finally tried it out the other day. The lamb burger and hand-pulled chili noodles were delicious, and the lady very friendly.
Even though I've lived in Vancouver for 9 years, this was the first time I went to Joojak, thanks to you! And I was not disappointed! Did you try their wonton soup? Probably one of the best I've ever had!
welcome to vancouver! I have tried the last two places in your video, and 朱雀坊 is defiantly the most authentic one! The other one is clean and popular, but not as authentic as 朱雀坊 :D
We have a Xi'an restaurant a town over from me in Mass! Being Cantonese, my parents cant stand the power of spice in this cuisine, but I love this stuff! Love your channel and keep the good content coming!
I literally just saw your video last night and went to the joo jack just now to order the burger and cold noodles. The perfect combo! I hope you're doing more Vancouver videos!
IDK why I do this to myself, a month ago I started eating low carb...doing a great job except I torture myself with these videos!!! good thing video carbs don't count. haha!!
I know this is gonna come up with this video so...in regards to Xi'an Famous Foods in NYC, I think their "burgers" are ok but everything else is very subpar. MUCH better noodles and Liang Pi elsewhere. New York Food Court and New World Mall just to name a few...
So, when it comes to those other Xian places, mind adding the links to those old vids in the description?
Strictly Dumpling can you review Cambodian food
this was in Richmond not Vancouver
would you say the food in Xi'an is in more of a southern or northern style?
how u eat all that food!?
Mike, after watching your video I told my friend to cancel all his plans the next day so we could try Joojak. It did not disappoint. We loved everything we tried! The owner admitted that business picked up a lot and at first they didn't know why. But people have been telling her, it is because you recommended it. Thanks so much!
Have you been back to the restaurant since then? Are they still busy?
"Unfortunately, they only had hot oil here." Something I never thought I would hear on this channel.
lol yeah that kind of blew me away too!
You NEED that very specific kind of chili sauce for that lamb dish and regular hot oil just isnt the same in that situation...I still have feelings for hot oil tho :/
Hahaha enjoy your hot oil bubble bath tonight Mike ;)
HOT OIL is life....but you also need the other stuff
Heard him say that, paused the video and said, "wait wait wait," scrolled down and found this comment
Mike, I love how proud you are of your heritage and it's local cuisine. Keep doing what you're doing man. Huge fan.

thats good news :) its bringing people to quality places and giving money to the ones that make food with love
Candice J. joojak restaurant is indeed one of the best Chinese food I had in Vancouver. Full of flavour and not too oily
That is so cute and really nice to hear, im so touched
Candice J, you're so lucky to live in such a gorgeous city!!! ❤️
really hope Mikey see this
Dude, we went to Joojak restaurant tonight and they were packed to the point were they had to turn people away. It looks like they've never been that busy before. Good job. Everyone in there was talking about your video about the restaurant haha. I even got the same seat as you with the cool background.
That moment when you lived in Vancouver your whole life but still need Mike Chen to teach you where to eat....
Totally! Me too.
same here haha
you mean hongcouver?
Same lol
What a shame I've lived here most my life and tried majority of the good spots
Joojak is definitely not very well known and you can easily drive by it without noticing it at all but it is a cut above the rest. The owner really knows her stuff and is very friendly and it definitely shows that she cares about her food. Glad you enjoyed Joojak Mike and welcome to Vancouver.
I agree, I tried it today and it was great. The owner and her daughter were so friendly!

mike looks genuinely excited... like a kid on Christmas morning... he always loves food but... sparkle in the eyes with this video!!!
u can clearly see that the last bun had the best quality
Eric Sciorts definitely gonna try the last place.
Eric Sciorts Probably the coldest and oldest.
Eric Sciorts Last bun was nice & crispy!
oh yeah, very true
Yea first two looked like rations or something and the last one looked amazing!
I have been eating at Xi’an cuisine for more than 10 yrs, and it’s my go-to every time I want to grab a bite. The owner even knows us!
5:56 "Let's integrate the spice" That made me laugh so fricken hard😂😂😂 He looks so happy
Hopelessly Hopeful someone has a ditty mind 😈
the loveable muslim weirdo I thought she only laughed because he was so excited to integrate the spice
It's past 12 midnight... I guess my head plays up when it hears about things integrating 😕
Why is that even remotely funny?
Is it bc integration???... calculus....? Integration?
Your favorite food will always be the food that you grow up with. In this case, Mile loves and eats Xian all the time.
I love how enthusiastic and passionate you are about food, especially food that's a part of your heritage. I'm Costa Rican myself and I can't tell you how much I relate to this with finding and analyzing claimed authentic food to see if it's truly Central American. Keep it up with the awesome videos :D
credits to the cameraman. somebody give this dude a food
Mark John Luchico 'a food'
Amazing.
so in that case, GIVE MIKE MORE FOOD
Yeah just like 1 food, maybe 2 food idk
i'm pretty sure mike was the only one there.
I'm sure any crew member with him eats VERY WELL.
I am eating here right now! Cumin lamb burger and cold noodles. Yummy orange soda.
Have probably seen 200 or so of your videos. This has to be your best so far......a great comparative job of exceptional authentic food, rounded out by your close knowledge of Xi'an local dishes. Thanks!
Tf?? Did he just say "unfortunately, they only have hot oil"???? How ironic 🤔😂
Hot oil is always good! But i think he means you need a different hot sauce with abit more acid to complement the dish.
He is looking for the original garlicky hot oil.
I Have been in many many cities all over the world, but I think Xi'an is probably the most beautiful I have EVER seen!
Oh you're from Xi'an, so that's where your love for spicy food comes from :D
I once tried yangroupaomuo in xi'an, and it was such a huge bowl, and I could just eat half of it, and I normally eat a lot...

I love this entire series! Also loving Mike Chen's personal channel. As a Eurasian, I'm immensely enjoying all these videos.
3:58 probably the first time mike has ever used the words "unfortunately" and "hot oil" in the same sentence?
"Unfortunately they dont have hot oil" so nope
Animemes He said "unfortunately they only have hot oil"
This place has lots of people now ever since you uploaded the video. I talked to the family and they're very happy and blessed for you uploading the video.

Mark Anderson that is close to my home
Mike, youre the only person I know that can enjoyably scarf down large quantities of food and still lust for more. So much love
man you rock i started with you on beyond science, only just realized you have a food channel. a bro after my own heart spice always wins. 1000 thumbs up!

Tiffany Felkner 👍👍👍
I love when they're generous with their meat, too...
Michael Duvic It's rare to find a resturant that is generous with the meat :)

LOVE YOUR VIDEOS 🌚 the way you eat is so satisfying😂
Ever since I was a little kid, my favourite place to eat was at the Xi’An cuisine! The owners recognize us every time we go 😊
Before watching your videos, I thought I was doing a good job getting of my comfort zone. Damn was I wrong! I love trying different types of Chinese food but I've yet to try what you've shown in your video. Thanks for introducing us all this delicious food! I'll hit up these places soon! haha, okay, thanks, I'll bear that in mind ^^
Richmond is little HK. I believe all these restaurants are in Richmond.
Vancouver Chinatown proper is undergoing gentrification as expensive condos are being built and costly restaurants/coffee shops are displacing traditional businesses...
Hey, sorry your visit wasn't that great here :( Next time you come back to Chinatown in Vancouver, you should visit these places for food/coffee:
- Phnom Penh (Dry Noodles, Chicken Wings)
- Fat Mao Noodles
- Ramaen Butcher
- Bestie (Currywurst)
- Nicli Antica Pizzeria (Mushroom Pizza)
- New Town Bakery (Bola Bola buns)
- Meat and Bread (porchetta sandwich)
- Revolver (coffee)
- Purebread (Pudgie Pie, also serves coffee)
- Donair Dude
.. just to name a few places I like going to! :)

I'm in Toronto, will you be coming here? I need your reviews so I know the best places to go.☺
there's a place on spadina by u of t.. they make the best kamjatang. Ever since I came back to vancouver, I've been missing it so much. Too bad i forgot the name... but it's like a basement, you have to go down stairs. i wanted to state this out:
ever sense i have been wathcing ur videos, ive been really interested in trying more asian dishes. im not a big meat person or noddle person, but every time i watch u eat them (especially the soup dumplings) i honestly really want to try it. you sir, are helping me try foods. thank you.
Why am I watching this at 1 o'clock in the morning, I'm getting hungry
We just got back from Xi'an a couple of months ago and I lived on their burgers. We were coming back from Tibet and had an over abundance of noodles ( Breakfast, second breakfast, lunch and dinner some days) Though they were delicious we were craving anything but noodles. The burgers were such a nice change for quick street food.
How long are you going by in Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦
Joojak is pretty unassuming looking at first glance. I've passed it for many many years favouring my usual go-to neighbouring restaurants instead, the Joyce-Kingsway area is spoiled for choice. But I'm glad that I finally tried it out the other day. The lamb burger and hand-pulled chili noodles were delicious, and the lady very friendly.
I feel so full just watching this Mike's stomach is literally a bottomless pit
