    I've been trading for 3 years now and have finally begun to understand it's not my chart setup, it's not the volatility, it's not the Fed, it's not the algos, it's the voice in my head that starts up as soon as I enter a trade. Great video Don. Thank you for all the truthful help.

    Once you trade enough you don't think at all about the profits you didn't take. After like 10,000 trades you never really think about the profit/loss numbers and instead are just focused on making the best trade you can. The emotions are just gone because you've cut so many loses and given so much back to the market it no longer effects you. A bad trade still frustrates me. I had a $60 loss today and I still can't believe how bad a trade it was. A tiny amount. I've swing traded a lot and so taking a $1-4k loss every few weeks was just something I had to get used to. But bad trades still make me emotional and tell me it is time for a break. I always stop trading after my first loss of the day. If that happens to be the first trade that is ok. That simple strategy has served me well to reset my mind and look for better setups.

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому

      Thanks Greg. It is good that many of the new traders hear these things. The hardest thing I think for many new traders is to 'unlearn' what they thought was true. Not doing so can be very expensive and frustrating. It is a difficult path for many traders to learn that it's all about trade selection and risk management. Traders resist the very counter-intuitive task of learning to rid themselves of optimism and persistance and then move forward in the task of learning to trade.
      On 'trade selection': Pretend you live in the Alaskan outback, you eat only what you kill and you only get 3 bullets per week. Trade selection is everything, hoping to find a formula to use (think, rinse, wash and repeat) is futile. Learning to make friends with uncertainty is not an easy task.
      Good luck to you and thank you for your comments. - Don

      Those who search for a 'formula' of indicators that a trader can use as though 'rinse, wash, and repeat' ---- are wasting time. They mistakenly think that removing all thinking, creativity, and emotion from trading is the goal - and in doing so are creating their own failure which they take with them with each new day. Practice and consistency are important as you learn.

    I took a futures course from a very successful trader who was loathe to move his stop up; he always encouraged leaving a very wide stoo and didnt even set a target. However, he said if you just had to take money out, he suggested just tightening the stop way up. That way you know you have almost everything, but still have the glimmer of hope--and reduced fomo--of staying in for that elusive extra homerun.
    He also made a point of leaving the computer for a while in a big trade, go for a walk, out for coffee, whatever to depressurize himself.

    There's kind of a bizarre conundrum I've found where when I'm trading it's detrimental to compare my trade against the potential I missed out on in hind sight.
    I love the way you showed the live trade in this video I sat there breaking down what I would do. I'm still a little to quick with my stop loss but am learning slowing down. It takes a minute to separate the compression cycles on MACD from the "run" cycles and then to trust myself.

First off plain enjoyable (great voice for it, and i love watching trades play out), but hearing your thoughts gives me great comfort, understanding and ideas. i already would have scaled one out after it started reversing...just as a mental thing i seem to "need" to feel that i got out at a good profit on at least one contract. Which is funny because there have been several times where i;ve "stubbornly" held on to multiple contracts and did not regret it!
    Nice trade.

    It's easy to say that I wouldn't have taken the trade lol mainly because I trade off of volume by price so I'm blind here. But if you're forcing me to trade here. I would have been looking to go short at 4390 on the retrace up after breaking down out of the balance area on the left of the chart with a about a 2-3 point stop and a 4380 target (roughly a move about the size of the previous balance area) hoping for a runner. I prefer to use bigger charts to plan the trade targets and small charts for lower risk entries.

      That is very good chart reading. 4390 is a great area to short. Of course, with any retrace one does not know how far it will go. In this case the retrace stalled and it was worth the entry. Of course, even if stopped out one can always re-enter if the momo down still looks good. Good thinking though, keep it up!!!

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому

      😎 Speaking of time machines: I read the story about how a group of those (genius IQ) students at MIT held a 'time travelers convention.' They ran ads in the paper, posted the coordinates of the site, named the date and sent out invitations to all time travelers. Then, they reminded everyone that it will NOT be an annual event because there was no need for that. ROTFL when I saw that.
      Then I read a footnote in the article that Stephen (Big Bang) Hawkin, the theoretical physicist said, "I'm not sure if time travel from the past is possible-- but I am positive that it is impossible to time travel from the future to the present ... or someone would already be here!"
      I my Day Trading Micro Futures book, I put that Hawkin quote there and stated that I was sure there is no pefect trading formula that one can use to 'rinse, wash, repeat' in order to get rich. My reason was the same as Hawkins: "If it were possible, such a system would already be here."

      Wonderful Dottie. This is a tricky type of trading. I don't know if you have seen this video (link to it coming up) but it one of the most viewed and has some pointers on the 'two biggest mistakes' made when trading the Micro E-Minis: ua-cam.com/video/9GIfxs27H3c/v-deo.html
      And here's another video that has good info on setting one's expectations while trading: ua-cam.com/video/ygKnR2x8mG4/v-deo.html
      A while back, I put this idea into one of the videos: It’s a story tittled **Perfect Handstands** that Jeff Bezos tells to employees and his management team. It is about expectations:
      "A close friend recently decided to learn to do a perfect free-standing handstand. No leaning against a wall. Not for just a few seconds but ‘ Instagram good’ She decided to start her journey by taking a handstand workshop at her yoga studio. She then practiced for a while but wasn't getting the results she wanted. So, she hired a handstand coach. Yes, I know what you're thinking, but evidently this is an actual thing that exists. In the very first lesson, the coach gave her some wonderful advice. "Most people," he said, "think that if they work hard, they should be able to master a handstand in about two weeks. The reality is that it takes about six months of daily practice. If you think you should be able to do it in two weeks, you're just going to end up quitting." Unrealistic beliefs on scope- often hidden and undiscussed --- kill high standards."

      Here is the channel homepage link that list all videos: ua-cam.com/channels/3WzyRqTuFn2iBjBPu-D6HA.html

Since the channel is primarily for beginners, you will notice I often repeat the most important things (and some of it is the reminders for like button, my book link, etc.) I realize that is not important for all viewers, but in order to keep the channel thriving, a sort of necessary inconvenience.
      One of the most popular (and one of the best IMHO) is this video about the two most common mistakes: ua-cam.com/video/9GIfxs27H3c/v-deo.html My strong suggestion is that you see this one a time or two.. very important things in there.

    High Don. Great channel you are an excellent teacher and demonstrator. Do you ever use the active trader tab on TW? Also, after making an OCO bracket order how do I get my stops on the chart like you have. You say Tastyworks Mouse....something special? I like the idea of being able to visually set my stops.

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому +1

      The mouse you see in the videos is a manufactured image I use to illustrate. Any mouse will do of course. I know some who prefer the Active Trader Tab in TastyWorks. To answer your question, as soon as you enter a bracket order, lines will appear for "TRADE" "Stop loss" and "Target." (the rectangle at the left end of the line with have the numerical values.)
      In my videos, so the viewers and clearly understand-- I put blue, red, and green lines on the Bracket Order's trade, stop, and target.
      My goal on the channel is to make it easy for (especially beginners and intermediate) traders to learn with these graphics (a picture is worth a 1000 words and all that.)
      Humans are the world's worst predictors of 'the future.' The CEO of IBM said in the 1970's that he didn't see a world market for super computers to ever exceed the need of more than 3 or 4 of them.
      Along those lines, I have pondered the possibility that there could be cell phone apps for each strategy: such as: Trading micros, covered calls, vertical stock option spreads, and on and on. It would be a simple way to learn and utilize strategy and the time it would take to learn each strategy could be reduced to only one or two hours. These would not replace what are called Professional Traders, but such focused programs might offer the everyday Joe/Mary a very fast and easy way to learn a few strategies.
      Here on the channel, I am sometimes criticized for featuring trades that make small profits (often $25 to $75), instead of using larger trades. My only defense (it's my story and I'm sticking to it!): Is that people already know how to multiply -- I'm just trying to exhibit a relatively low-risk smaller one or two contract trades so that people have an affordable way to learn to trade the stock equity index futures.
      I recommend a regimen of practice trading in my book and explain it there. But most people in doing these 'practice trades' make a huge mistake: They get a $50,000 or $100,000 play money account and then they start practice way above the money range (think: risk) that they will actually be trading in the beginning. Unknowingly, they are not actually practicing what it is they will be doing in actual real trades.
      It is a huge psychological jump to trade at $50 a point than it is at only $5 a point. I urge people to always 'practice what they will actually be doing' rather than doing large trades in a simulation program.
      You know the old saying, "...crawl, walk, then run...." When a beginner gets confidence and an account balance suitable for it, they might start trading 2 or 3 contacts--- and work their way up gradually to bigger trades with high dollar risks. I think in one of my videos, I explained it this way: "If you want to learn to high dive, you don't go to 200 feet high to learn how."
      By increasing in gradients and gradually - a trader's confidence has a chance to grow at a reasonable rate, and gaining confidence is much more likely. If you want to teach your child how to learn to swim, you don't throw him/her into the deep end of the pool for the first lesson.
      Of course, I don't hold the belief that people should do things strictly 'my way,' not at all. I just want to show people a way to 'test the waters' and find out if this kind of trading will work for them. For a great many people, it does NOT. This higher-risk trading offers opportunities for immediate profits and it isn't easy to learn. Beginners should not trade with money than cannot afford to lose in this day trading done here on the channel. There are many other ways, many less risky, that a person can learn.
      Stay tuned to the channel because by June of this year, I will add a new strategy for subscribers to try: It is a relatively low-risk stock option strategy with typically a 60% to 80% chance of profit. It is a stock replacement strategy with defined risk and those trades (typically) often last 3 days to 3 weeks. I want to keep the focus on the channel here with ways beginners/intermediates can learn to make extra money. Oh, and this strategy is fairly easy to learn quickly, which is what I like most about it.
      Thanks for the question. and hope you have a Great '23- Don

      Nice to hear from you again Stroube. Thank you. There is an epiphany I had after years after I began to learn to trade. Anyone can test this idea very easily: The reason trading looks so easy is because many people never realize the genius of hindsight makes every chart with a trading indicator on it displays perfection. A trading chart with a signal indicator on it always appears *so obviously to be what perfect decisions look like.* These charts are only 'perfect history' -- they didn't really predict what would happen, they only recorded what has already happened. I find it nothing short of astounding that so many people can so easily use this as *confirmation* of how pure technical trading works. Similarly, this is why 'back-testing' is little more than a lazy school teacher who just teaches the test without the student ever having to truly learn anything to pass the tests.

    Hey, today was a good day. Got into and out of the market with almost perfect timing. I feel like a trading genius. Of course that is after two weeks losing every trade. Two things I think I've learned. First, if the market turns against you, accept it. Second, as soon as possible make sure the trade isn't going to cost you. Sometimes I felt I was going to miss out if I got stopped out too soon by moving the stop too early, but you are actually protecting your account to make another trade when the market does turn in your favor.
    I know, what you've been saying from the beginning but hearing it and understand it don't always happen at the same time.

    Are you using market orders to execute the trades or limit order....which is fastest to lock in the price you can see in your take profit area

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому

      During the busy day session, I usually use 'market' orders for fast fills. As you may know, using limit orders does not guarantee an immediate fill. After hours (Globex) with periods of slow trading, the bid/ask gap can be wide, so I might consider 'limit' order there. And remember, you can always instantly change a limit to a market order if you make that decision.

    Sometimes when I put an order to buy or sell and the price is hovering at or "past" my bid price it won't execute my bid. Is there a reason why? Thank you! I'm new to this but have been investing and doing options for years now.

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому

      You need to ask your Broker to be sure.
      My guess is you are using a limit order (and not a market order.)
      A limit order does not fill unless a trade is available at that particular price.
      Since orders are first come, first serve ---- it is possible for your order not to fill if there are not enough (either bid or ask) at that specific price.
      FYI: a "market" order fill will at the next available price (either bid or ask.) at the best price available.
      If you are trading Micro E-Minis during the day session, there is usually only one-tick, give or take available, thus while you won't get a specific price, you will get filled almost immediately and it will be near the displayed trading price.
      Your trading software has a place for you to specify either limit or market order types.
      The Micro E-Minis have very high open interests (OI) and trading volume (VOL), plenty to get an efficient fill during the day session. After hours there are periods of time that this is not true (example: there may be low volume of trading and the gap (distance between bid/ask) can be larger than only one or two ticks.
      Hope that helps. The normal way to handle these types of questions is traditionally to phone the help desk at your broker. Since money is involved and it is not a theoretical question, ALWAYS contact your broker is the way these questions should be handled. The reason is simple: someone else may give you a wrong or incomplete answer - and while they have great intentions - there is the possibility of faulty information. When it comes to your money: call your broker to get a 100% reliable answer. Good brokers are glad to help because they want happy customers and it is in their best interests to be clear and concise. They are glad to help.
      Glad to hear from you. That's a great question and is often asked. Thank you. - and good luck to you-

      DG,
      Thank you for your comment/question. You are not alone. You've expressed the same angst that almost all traders experience. I suggest, as you have expressed already, that you reconsider the idea that the key to successful trading is to 'have a plan.' There's a very common false-narrative that some plan exists and once you find it, you just 'rinse, wash, and repeat.' That just isn't true. This is what I was referring to in this video you just watched about the 'secret sauce' sold by those people who sell 'one size fits all' trading solutions for very high prices. If you missed that point in the video, please go thru and hear it again.
      Believe me, if this trading was as easy as one formula, one sentence, or one paragraph that could promise a trader success --- I would not have 150+ videos on this, I would only need ONE!
      Please consider two things:
      1) Watch 5 or 10 my most recent videos; they are in this playlist in chronological order: bit.ly/PlayListNumber3
      2) If you would like to try the approach I teach here on the channel (and I'm first to say, this type of trading is NOT for everyone --- you can check out my short 110 page book that is pretty much a crash course in the basics. • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому

      I'm always aware of major support and resistance levels. I hasten to add since these trades are usually very short in duration, I probably am more mindful of trends than longer term support/resistant levels... I could make an argument that in these short duration trades they are often the same thing.
      I do not think memorizing dozens of what are called 'candlestick patterns' as being useful. Instead, I recommend one go back to the way the inventor of the candlesticks used them. I have a video that explains how they were used orginally. ✅I use the click n drag to move my stops and open trades with a Bracket/OCO order. Here's a short video on the broker I use on my channel: ua-cam.com/video/HMTt6gvzif0/v-deo.html
      ✅ BROKER INFO: Here’s my link to the TastyWorks Application, you don't have to fund the account to check out the software; it is full-function but won't send orders unless you choose to fund it. (There's no obligation for you to do so and no charges or cards required.)
      This is the exact same software I use on this channel. I selected it because you can trade with everything on ONE-page (the “see it, click it, trade it TastyWorks formatting.)
      As you will see in the videos on the channel, TastyWorks is easy and fast to learn and just as important all the data, software, and money transfers (to /from) your bank are free.
      In about two business days your account will be ready. You will be able to open the trading software and explore it. (no funding required and if you change your mind, no fees or obligation whatsoever. )
      If you try TastyWorks, please use my affiliate link, it helps support all the free videos on the channel.
      You'll be able to see the software and check it out - and you'll be able to trade if you decide to fund the account. Thank you; here's the link to the application: bit.ly/TW-Link
       America’s Favorite Broker
      Free Data Feeds.
      Low Commissions.
      Free money transfers in/out of your bank.
      No robot help lines, just real live smart people ready to help you.
      How to Start: Just fill out the account application at this link bit.ly/TW-Link No deposit or credit card required - and you do not have to fund your account until you are ready. PLUS, even though you cannot trade until you fund, you can still operate the software and check it out. I think you'll like it. For account type select "The Works" - and you will have an account for trading the Micros. When your application is approved: Just fund your account and you are ready to begin trading real time.
      How Much to Start: TastyWorks requires $2,000 to open ‘the works’ account and a minimum of $2,500 to qualify for the lower intraday margin rates which will allow you to trade during regular day session using only 25% of the overnight margin requirements. Intraday margins are only 25% of the amount for overnight margin requirements; for full into see here: INTRADAY
      A COMMENT: You can start with less at some of the other brokers - but it is really tough too start with just a few hundred because if you have a few losing trades, you have to stop until you make another deposit. Something in the $3k to $5k range is a good starting amount. The CME has a free, no deposit, zero cost trade simulation program you can practice with while you get the basics down: www.cmegroup.com/education/practice/about-the-trading-simulator.html
      What is a fair commission rate to trade the Micro E-Minis: Commissions + fees for Round trip (both in/out of the trade) should be under US$3.00.

      99% of the time I go with the trend. I rarely trade against it. In most of my trades I sort of plan to 'carve out' a part of a price move that might give me a less risky entry point. In that way 'context' becomes very important. It takes practice and patience to find entry points that offer you better than 50/50% chance of profit. Learn to look for a 'less risky' time to enter the trade, forget about 'how much money' you may make and put reducing risk as your # 1 priority before and during the trade. You no control over how much you might make on a trade (hope is not a trading strategy) but you do control the amount of risks you take. You might review the chapter on trading psychology in my book; our brains can so easily trick us.

    How does the time that Asian markets open affect your trading? Or does it?

    • @DayTradingMicroFutures
      @DayTradingMicroFutures  Рік тому +1

      You, of course, can Google for articles to find opening/close times of various world markets.... and then study market prices on the products you trade. You asked a pretty 'open-ended' question so I'm not quite sure what your concern/question is. Perhaps some of those articles will address your concerns/planning.
      The Micro E-Minis trade on the CME (aka: Chicago Merc.) If you plan on doing your trading outside the USA "day session" hours of 9:30a ET until 4p ET, be sure you contact your broker so you fully understand what margin requirements are for the 'day session' and also for the (higher margin) after-hours trading; the after-hours rates are higher. To be clear, I am speaking of USA required margins per regulations and policies.
