      @@dardackA lot of codes allow 1.5". 2" is probably overkill anyways because of low flow showerheads.

    I worked for a GC through summers in college. What I learned is that every project is like this. People make mistakes, things aren't perfect. The skill comes in the knowledge of how to overcome those issues and fix mistakes and how to be creative. I love how real this is showing the steps and going through the process. It's not always pretty getting from point A to B, but the finished product never shows the anguish!

    I like the idea of building benches with foam. The shower tray looks like way more work than a schluter or other foam trays. I do understand why you went with that system because of your drain issues. Thanks for the info. Always good to have another possible solution for a challenging remodels.

    Hey Jeff, you mention new on the market, but this whole arrangement is VERY similar to a setup you've been able to buy from Schluter for years.
    As in, they sell a thick structural foam to go underneath their pans, and a drain that makes an immediate 90 to jump across the subfloor surface.
    I had to do a VERY similar installation (minus the linear drain) because of joist locations and where I could cut.
    Which is all to say... going to bet this is way $$ cheaper.
    As a 1st timer bathroom remodeler, it was super easy to use in all the same ways you are doing here.
    Waterproof, strong as wood, and easy to cut. That structural foam stuff in a shower is MAGIC!

    Plumbing Engineer here; the dye in the primer or prime+solvent is there so we can confirm during our site inspection punchlists that the joints were in fact primed. If there is a pipe failure, again the dye allows you to know if the joint failed due to design error, or installation error i.e. who's insurance is footing the bill.

    • @Visionist
      @Visionist 11 місяців тому +2

      Depends on the brand. Some of them have flawed design - too many metal feet with sharp corners for the drain insert, which easily catches hairs and other debris. I bought and installed mine in EU from a reputable brand and never had any issues with clogging. Also, you shouldn't use 1.5" drain pipe for shower. Not over here anyway.

    I like the whole drain system idea. Since I have a basement shower, it would probably be a nice way to give me the option to move the drain without having to dig out ancient concrete. Though I think even with the way this foam board works, I think I'd still rather have a prefab pan so I wouldn't forever second guess the waterproofing.

If you accidently cut the already applied waterproofing at the factory it can be waterproofed over the cut again so it wont be garbage.

Honestly if you told me you never had one leak, i wouldnt beleive you for a second, with that technique youve definitely had some leak, and that in of itself, should of made you learn your lesson

    Jeff, I'm confused. I don't think I saw any sloping done on the floor. Will there be a part 2 on this shower?

      Thought so as well... but the top layer he put on is sloped.

    Interesting system. I'm curious to see how it ends up and holds up. Looks like it has potential. Can thinset be used to fill voids like that without issue (like around the plumbing, crevices, etc)?

    I didn’t quite get when the shower’s fall to the drain was introduced? The sub floor is level right?

    “704.1 Slope of horizontal drainage piping… the slope of the piping shall be not less than 1/4 inch per foot (2-percent slope).” No wonder you don’t want to pull a permit.

    Great video! Can you describe how you establish the floor slope from the bench to the drain - is the Oatey Quick Drain pre-sloped?

    I had one of these installed. Hated it. The long drain is more place for hair and grime to build up. You have to pop it out and clean it a lot more.

    I have no knowledge of ABS plastic. I didn't know it also needed ABS glue. I have worked with CPVC though, but that was back in the mid 80's when I re-piped the family's house.

    Hi Jeff, long time viewer!!! We bought a house last year and was told that our subfloor is a robust decking rather than joists and plywood. As a result, the decking flexes and so tile isn't recommended as any self-leveler and tile grout will crack. Would this product work if we placed it over the decking for our shower? My gut says yes as this foam board is structural but wanted to see if you had any thoughts.

      You could also tell by the blue hue of the glue it was glue/primer combined.

    I’m not a renovator, just watching for fun. I might be naive but I didn’t quite understand the bench area, I’d prefer having a storage underneath or removable bench there.

    • @AceEverett
      @AceEverett 11 місяців тому +1

      The problem with hinged chairs or benches is that they never match anything else in the shower, creating a solid bench means you can just tile it with everything else. Having a large floating bench (structurally secured to the walls with open space underneath) means you're gonna have to squat and lean over to grab anything underneath on a wet floor potentially leaves you smacking your head on the bench the one time you slip. The only floating benches I see are small ones, not any deeper than 12" from the wall.
      If you look above the drain, you'll see he left a long shelf which will hold all of the soaps, so he doesn't have to build a niche.
