I had a similar experience at that same lock (O5) in 2022. Not very communicative. Very annoying! A technicality but the facility near 3 rivers is actually owned by New York State as part of the canal system (not the US Coat Guard).

It was frustrating. Some locks were excellent while others left a lot to be desired.
