  • The 2021 Vespa GTS 300 hpe, is capable of OBD2. This isn't talked about in the owner's manual so I wanted to show a short video of how you can read your own fault codes if the check engine light comes on.
You will need an OBD2 analyst tool and an adapter to get from the standard 16 pin connector to a 6 pin Piaggio connector.

I use the Torque app, but you may find others as well.

Nice video. Definitely a feature not discussed with EURO 5. Love to learn more about that phone mount (under the speedometer) when you have a chance.

The phone mount is something I pieced together. Its uses a RAM quickmount grafted to an iBolt set of ball mounts. I used one of the expansion bolts for a Faco windscreen to mount it underneath.

As my 2006 GTS ages I've begun to consider replacements and am trying to get up to speed on the new HPE models and what they might mean should I get one. My engine light has been on almost continually for 12 years due to O2 sensor issues. I've ignored it along with the seat latch that hasn't functioned for an even longer period of time. When the engine light first came on the dealer checked for a code and found none. On my GTS there are two lights -- an engine light, and a CODE light. And in my case, neither has been particularly useful. The scooter has performed flawlessly for most of the last 44K miles with the only failures being a fuel pump, spark plug wire, and a burned-out connector in the wiring harness. Each was diagnosed and fixed quickly and the Vespa keeps on ticking.
My fear with the newer GTS models is that they will require more maintenance and will not be nearly as forgiving to little failures because of their increased complexity. I appreciate your video and it's good to see that Piaggio hasn't concerned itself with the fueling challenges of the GTS!

2007 Vespa GTV ie 250 does not have the 6 Pin. Although it does have a oval looking 4 pin maybe. Any suggestions on where to locate the adapter that'll work with the setup you've shown? I've searched and searched, but haven't found anything definitive. Thank you! :)

The earlier non HPE engines have a proprietary interface. It is not OBD2. Sorry.

Thanks for making this! After watching this I bought an adapter cable. About a week ago my CEL came on. Mine also came up with an O2 sensor fault. Do you remember if your code was P0130?

@@EricSmyder Thanks. Got my GTS 300 HPE on 5/10 and have already done 14 fill-ups. The first twelve were overflows so I’m sure I had a lot of fuel in the evap canister. The last two have been spill-free; hoping I finally learned the secret. I take the bucket out, and point the nozzle toward the rear so the nozzle is inline with the bike. 2 for 2 doing it that way so far.

I have been an auto mechanic for 40+ years. OBDII is a nightmare, even when you have the proper (and VERY expensive) diagnostic equipment and vehicle specific software. Late model cars/trucks are constantly throwing the infamous P0300 random misfire code, which activates the check engine light. There are an almost infinite number of reasons why an engine might have a very slight random misfire. Older versions of OBDII were not nearly as sensitive as the newer versions, and would not pick up a slight misfire. I have a 2012 GTS300, with almost 50,000 miles on it, and have never had the check engine light come on. I suspect that would not be the case with the HPE models. I am currently looking for a late model low mileage NON HPE model GTS300. According to Robot on the Vespa Motorsport website ua-cam.com/users/VespaMotorsport you cannot get the scanner needed to diagnose the OBDII system, because Piaggio won't sell it to you. To actually have any hope of diagnosing OBDII issues, you have to have a far more complicated scanner than just one that displays codes. For OBDII cars, these typically cost around $2,000. Also, to make things worse, Vespa has literally DOUBLED the required maintenance on the HPE models, from 12,000 miles to 6,000 miles. That tells me there is clearly a reliability problem with these engines. It's also super expensive, and troublesome. A full service, including belt replacement and valve adjustment costs around $500, every 6000 miles, and you have to leave the scooter at a Vespa dealer, then pick it up, with more scratches on it than it had when you dropped it off.
As for the EVAP system, I have it disconnected and plugged on my 2012 GTS300. I want my gas tank FULL. And as any Vespa owner knows, that is almost impossible with a gas station nozzle. I carry a 1 quart plastic bottle and small funnel with me, fill up the bottle from the gas pump, then use the gas in the bottle and the funnel to finish filling up the tank right up to the top of the filler neck. Leaving a gas stop with a tank only 3/4 full is simply not acceptable.
I highly recommend staying away from the HPE model for now. It has not been proven reliable. And I would like to know how one does using 12,000 mile maintenance intervals just like the regular GTS300. A valve adjustment at 6,000 miles is simply not acceptable, especially when it used to be 12,000 miles.

Have a 3 x HPE GTS300's, clocked up 40,000klm on one with no problems at all. It seems different countries have varying service times, not sure why. As for reliability none have missed a beat.

Could you please name the vendor for the software you're using in addition to your Bluetooth OBD II auto 16 pin and Vespa 6 pin adapters. I attempted to look it up, but was unsuccessful. Thanks for the GREAT video!
