The only real drawback on the Vortec is the heads.... You're limited on valve lift , and a good power building cam is typically over .520" of lift , whereas the Vortec head is limited to about .480"..... I've been struggling with this issue for quite some time now. If you're only goal is a sub 500hp daily driver , there's no reason you can't use the Vortec 5.7... If you're wanting more hp than that , go buy a 5.3 ..... It's too easy to get 600-800 hp out of one and still be a daily driver....
@@firemanjim324 that's very helpful to know with the heads and cam. I got enough knowledge to put it all together but not enough to pick out the right parts for what I wanna do. In the long run i would love to get a 5.3 and go LS. But seeing how my budget is -17 dollars I'm just working with what I got 😀 the condition my Monte is in now would prolly just grenade the rear end if I push it over 500. Lol.
@@randallweeks5081 the Vortec is a great upgrade from a stock sbc , even stock. I'm running a electric Holley red fuel pump at the moment but I recommend using a holley blue electric fuel pump. It puts out more fuel pressure. I am using both afr and boost gauges. The car isn't tuned yet but under boost you wanna aim for mid to low 12's on your afr gauge. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I think I just watched the video you are referring to. Dude had a 70s c-10, looks like you got a 70s Camaro. That's an important distinction to make. Good on you to show how well it fits your car though. Hope it helps someone else....
Love the build man! Video came across my feed because I’m building a forged internal 383 sbc in my 82 Camaro. Mines almost done thank goodness lol. Was $100 scrap car 😎 I’ve been busy on it this last year. Vids on my channel if you have time. But anyways a tip on the header wrap for future reference. Hang the header on the wall with some screws or bolts so you can help stretch the wrap tighter. But let it soak in water and that also helps tighter wrap and stops fraying figured that might help if you do another set on different vehicle.
Thanks. I appreciate the advice. I'll check out your channel. I'd love to see your build. I'm currently in the process of upgrading the fuel system. Thanks for watching 😁 👍

Great video mang! Very informational. Never turbo a car before and I’m terrified of blowing my shit up..😅I was thinking of trying to do a eBay setup to start out cheap on one of my Toyota Corollas. Debating how to go about this…This helped the idea thanks 🙏
I was the same way. But just take the extra precautions by buying a good wastegate and injectors if its fuel injected. Those are the too main components you don't want to cheap out on to prevent grenading your engine. Start off on low boost 5psi. You'll be alright. The rest is up to the tuner😁👍
I agree. I've noticed with a couple of ebay wastegate's they would leak air through the 3 assembly screws under the diaphragm. I remove and put silicon on the threads and reassemble. I also wanna thank you for the donation. Me and my family really appreciate it 🙏🏽 Thanks for watching 😁 👍
I will never understand why people lower their cars to the point they bottom out. Maybe it's the era I grew up in during the 60s and 70s, but we jacked our cars up to put big tires on them. When we went to the strip and pulled the front wheels off the line we did not bottom out when landed and didn't bottom out going over a curb.
Thank you for the excellent info! just wondering - do you have any excess heat problems without running a intercooler? thanks again for the explained knowledge. Keep up the Rad videos!
My engine did run a bit hot. But I believe it was do to valves not opening and closing correctly due to a bad cam. A blow through carburetor actually cools the air very well. One of the reasons why I didn't spend the extra money for a intercooler after I did the research. But having one would make the charged air even cooler.👍
Enjoyed the video, just learning about all this, was thinking of nitrous, but like the idea of a turbo, because the power is always there, thanks for posting.
I haven't found any kits specifically for a 63 impala. But the kit I'm using may fit a 63 impala long as it's a sbc with straight plug cylinder heads. You may have to modify the crossover pipe.

Great video my friend!!! I have a few questions, if you don't mind. Could you run your 3" exhaust dump down through where the crossover pipe comes up through on the passenger side? Was there enough room for it, I know you went through your roof with it, just wondering if there was enough room there. Also, how much would the turbo need to come down to clear the stock hood? Or should I say, how far does the turbo stick up past the stock hood. This company has this same turbo kit for a ls engine, and thats what I'm doing research for. I already have a ls swapped into my 81 camaro, just need to find a turbo kit that fits, but won't brake the bank.
The turbo sticks up past the stock hood at least 4 inches. Its quite a bit. Also there is enough room to run the exhaust downwards on the passenger side. Thats actually how I'm thinking about doing it. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
the quality of assembly, the quality of cast, the bearings, the output, vibrations, heat, all plays a role and if cost cutting is done then the final quality will be trash irrespective of the shine.
You can use 12 point 3/8 head arp header bolts and then you can use the box end of your wrench. Also stage 8 header locks work very well and you won’t ever have to re-torque them
Is your turbo only being powered by your passenger side cylinders? I thought they were supposed to use the cross over exhaust pipe to tie in before the turbo. Thanks for the video
How much boost do you run and how much horsepower do you think you're engine putting out and do you have trouble with you engine overheating . Thanks for the video.
I'm currently running a 7psi spring. I dont know the power output yet still in the process of breaking in the engine. I have no heating issues. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thanks, I'm thinking about doing this on an 80 corvette it has 340hp but I need about 390hp... so I'm thinking about it. Either that or cylinder heads. I like the way you did the video.. I'm gonna watch some more of yours..
lol, 390? on 8lbs boost, try like 450 at least. a rule of thumb is for every atmosphere of psi added(14 is atmospheric pressure), double your starting naturally aspirated hp. 7lbs would add 170hp to that 340hp(510hp)
Dude the point is they sell a kit that is complete and says it works! Back in the day when you bought a kit that was made in the USA! It worked so well that it was usually better built than the rest of the project! Meaning they didn’t build shit and sell it unless it worked like they said it would to you when you bought! Man we has Americans have really dropped our standards
I always say do it at your own risk. But you'll get mixed information. Some say it's ok and some say don't. Usually under low boost 5-10 psi you'll be ok without one. I run my integra with out a bov all the time at 10psi. Thanks for watching 😁👍
It's all good. I'm still learning myself. But there isn't a specific turbo or part number. Most people tend to use ether a gt35 or gt45 for turbo v8's. And with a t4 flange. Turbo prices very so I tend to go for whatever I can afford. If you ever need further assistance feel free to contact me. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
I have ls1 engine with a cam and valve springs and i want to keep the the bottom end stock and put a turbo any tips I should know would this turbo work? Also how much go does your hp car have? Much love❤
I'm not sure of horse power. I've never had the car on a dyno. Also these wouldn't fit an Ls head. Although if I'm not mistaken Ebay does sale turbo manifolds for Ls engines. My tip is to start with low boost 6-7 psi and see how the car reacts. And don't cheap out on a wastegate😁👍🏾

Great job on your install. After doing all that work and to get the full potential of the turbo ,,,, why not finish it right with adding an intercooler.
Also on carb'd turbo cars, the fuel atomization from the carburetor thru the intake acts as intercooling (latent heat of vaporization). Unless you're running high pressure, it's pretty hard to heat soak a proper blow thru setup. For someone on, say, under 12lbs of boost, the intercooler would just be a complication.
first id like to start by saying i LOVEEEED this video super helpful, already bought everything on your list for my 350. but im curious since im fairly new to the turbo mods whats up with the pipe coming from the back of the turbo and out the hood?
Thanks, glad my video was helpful. The pipe on the back of the turbo facing upward is the actual exhaust. Instead of running it to the rear of the car or doing a fender exit like most are doing these days. I took the cheapest and easiest route, by running it straight up 🤣🤣 Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@Duwop77 thats awesome! however i do enjoy my eardrums so well be running it to the rear, how are you keeping track of your boost numbers/ getting them to where youd like them? i didnt notice a boost control system.
@@soulevans9666 its Controlled with the wastegate spring. But I will be installing a turbosmart manual boost controller. I have one on my turbo integra and it works well.
@@soulevans9666 you can buy a cheap boost controller that basically acts as a controlled vacuum leak. the more clicks, the bigger the vacuum leak, it fools the wastegate, and thus more boost. gotta be careful for boost spikes though lol

So how much boost are you workin wit ? and How did you do a turbo kit without increasing ring Gap ??? You know Bro Da RING GAP .. DA GAP .. ??? DA GAP ... WHY ? Because the very moment your rings but up against eachother that will be the end of your WHIP.. Your motor will stick a ring and you will need a NEW WHIP MOTOR
In this video the oil pan was tapped. But if your running an electric fuel pump. Moroso makes a plate for your mechanical fuel pump location that has an 10an fitting you can drain back to. Thats what I'm using now
You have me confused. Why did you hook up the exhaust pipe to go under the car and why is the exhaust on the turbo (that points straight up) covered with the plastic plug? How can this work?
Due to it being an engine with 2 cylinder heads. Both exhaust manifolds need to be joined together. That's the reason for the crossover pipe underneath. So that both exhaust pressure's can be combined and forced through a single turbo setup in order to make it spool. If it was a twin turbo setup there wouldn't be a need for the crossover pipe. Each exhaust manifold would have it's own individual turbo. An engine with one cylinder head like a four cylinder engine wouldn't need a crossover pipe either. And the pipe coming off the turbo is the actual exhaust that is usually ran to the rear of the car and vented into the atmosphere like any ordinary car/truck or motorcycle. I just took a shortcut and aimed it straight up 😉 If you have any further questions feel free to contact me. Thanks for watching 😁👍

@@Duwop77 right on! Sound dope and I can't argue with that, power is power. I just gotta motivate my wallet some more 😆
@@firemanjim324 that's very helpful to know with the heads and cam.
If you have one already , just out a carb on it , a better than stock cam ( like an extreme energy 262° cam ) a HEI distributor with a MSD spark box , and headers of course..... Yes sir. Your correct. The gentleman did have a 70s truck. I appreciate it. Thanks for watching 😁

Word of advice, remove the oil restrictor and drill it out. That style turbo does not require a oil restrictor
It is best to disassemble the wastegate and get a spring of choice. Correct any misalignment and get it on!
I agree. I've noticed with a couple of ebay wastegate's they would leak air through the 3 assembly screws under the diaphragm. I remove and put silicon on the threads and reassemble.
I also wanna thank you for the donation. Me and my family really appreciate it 🙏🏽

Some do it for looks and some do it for performance reasons. Me myself I did it for looks. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Thanks for watching 😁 👍

lol, 390? on 8lbs boost, try like 450 at least. a rule of thumb is for every atmosphere of psi added(14 is atmospheric pressure), double your starting naturally aspirated hp. 7lbs would add 170hp to that 340hp(510hp)

Thanks, it's on low boost so I'll be ok. But eventually I'm gonna install an intercooler. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Also on carb'd turbo cars, the fuel atomization from the carburetor thru the intake acts as intercooling (latent heat of vaporization). Unless you're running high pressure, it's pretty hard to heat soak a proper blow thru setup.
For someone on, say, under 12lbs of boost, the intercooler would just be a complication.
carbs dont need an intercooler.

Because the very moment your rings but up against eachother that will be the end of your WHIP.. Your motor will stick a ring and you will need a NEW WHIP MOTOR
Where did you tap in for the oil return line
In this video the oil pan was tapped. But if your running an electric fuel pump. Moroso makes a plate for your mechanical fuel pump location that has an 10an fitting you can drain back to. Thats what I'm using now
Would u send me a full list of all the parts u got for ur turbo .. I'm wanting that hole setup u got ..
I have all the parts listed in the description box. Although the small block turbo manifolds are currently out of stock.
I just took a shortcut and aimed it straight up 😉
If you have any further questions feel free to contact me. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Can you make a short clip of what the exhaust looks like from underneath? Like, a youtube short clip video. Thanks my man.

😂😂😂 cheaper that way. Now I'm thinking about doing fender exit for the exhaust. But don't really want to cut up my oem fender. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Working on a turbo 305 right now, and kind of still learning about turbos 😟. Are you running water lines in your turbo? Do you need to? And are using a mechanical or electric fuel pump?
I'm only running oil to the turbo. Although some turbos use both oil and water. Also I'm running an electric fuel pump. Holley blue or better. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
@@Duwop77 10-4, thank you! Gonna pop the engine in as soon as I can!!
Wish you the best on your project 😁
Is your carburetor built for blow by? Or what carb you have
It's a 650cfm demon blow thru carburetor. It comes ready for boost.
Hey man love your build. What are you running for ignition System and what are you running for timing?
Thanks, ignition system is MSD 6al-2. Its currently running base timing for all motor until I get the fuel system setup. Once it's all complete I'll be sure to update. Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@Duwop77 I’m currently working on my 84 trans am with a 383 with twin turbo. Definitely will up load to my Chanel. Talk soon man hope I don’t bother you with prolly a lot of questions in the up com thing hahaha
Nope not at all. Ask as many questions as you please as often as you please. 84 trans am is a beautiful car. Good luck with your build👍
How much power the car making? How much this kit cost
I pieced it together. All parts are in the description box. Also I've upgraded engine since this video. Still needs dyno tune.

Good video g, I got a 327 and I wanna throw this on for a fun budget build for the channel. They stopped selling that turbo you had linked bellow, you know of another good option?
Thanks bro, I found another listing. It's the same turbo that I'm using in the video. Here's the link rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2F153895166446&campid=5338700573&toolid=10001&customid= Thanks for watching 😁👍
Duwop77 thanks appreciate that. You got the new setup done yet?
@@derxgarage2121 almost, the swap is in. Just making some modifications so I can start the break in process. Update video coming soon👍
Duwop77 cool thanks for the help. I’m probably going to run this set up, but add a blow off valve off the scoop on the carb.
@@derxgarage2121 your welcome. I also wanted to add a blow off valve. But I don't have the skill to weld one on the carb hat. In the future I'm also planning on adding an intercooler.
Wt size is the downpipe for the exhaust on the turbo?
3 inch
I can’t seem to find that exhaust manifold and are you gonna put a intercooler on it
I'll see if I can find another listing for the exhaust manifold. Also I plan on putting an intercooler in the future but as of now it's fine. Blow through style carburetors does a good job at cooling the intake temperatures. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
Link to the exhaust manifold below 😁👍🏾

Any ideas on what kind of boost your producing great video man
It has a 7 pound spring in it. But the engine in the video also had a flat cam. So I never got the chance to feel the boost. That engine has since been swapped out and currently going through some upgrades and break in. Stay tuned for the update video coming soon. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Sweet man thanks for the very fast reply I'm building a sbc turbo drag elcamino and doing research between blow thru and going Holley sniper kit
No problem. I also wanted to go efi but at the time I didn't want to dish out the extra cash to upgrade my fuel system. But I think in the future I'm gonna do it.
Same here I can't justify going crazy on spending since I can't make it to the track as often as I want together now but hopefully in the future it will be ripping down the strip
@@tylerwidmer7088 Sounds like you and I are on the same boat. I even work on the days the local track is open😫 but one day I plan on being in there laying down some rubber🤣
Do you did something to the carburetor
Its what's called a blow through carburetor. Its made for boost. A regular carburetor isn't suitable. You can find them on ebay, jegs, summit racing etc.
I have a Holley 750 c carburetor and an electric fuel pump with good fuel fluid but they tell me that it can overfeed or drown and it can crush the carburetor floats or more specifically the question did you modify something to your carburetor????? ?
Yes, I had to upgrade my fuel pump. I was running a holley red. But you need at least a holley blue or better. Also a boost reference fuel pressure regulator.
you have to use solid or nitrophyll floats. no brass floats. boost will crush them.
I've been searching for the Accel plugs you mentioed. I have the same exact kit on a 355sbc. Would you remeber the part number for them?
Yes the part number is 574s/8199. I found a set on ebay. Check the link below. Thanks for watching 😁 👍

@@Duwop77 Thanks!
Can you tell me the name of the kit And will it fit a 305 motor
Yes sir. All the links to the parts I used are in the description box. Also it should fit a 305 long as the heads are straight plugs. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
What's the link to the turbo manifolds?

Where did you get your exhaust piping and clamp from ?
The band clamp i bought off eBay. The cross pipe came with the exhaust manifold. Parts are listed in the description box. Thanks for watching 😁 👍
So is the turbo only running on 4 cylinders? Or do the headers connect somewhere?
There's a cross pip that runs underneath that connects both exhaust manifolds. Thanks for watching 😁👍
