My favorite piece of trivia for the heroes is a little tidbit found on the D.D. wiki. Leper is the only hero that faces towards the light during hero shrines while everyone else faces away from it. While every other hero's backstories are filled with regrets, pushing them to seek redemption. Leper has 0 regrets and aids others simply so he can make the world better. It's awesome that you concluded this video with Leper as he's truly a man unlike any of the others.
Then there's Flagellant, sitting in darkness with the reanimated corpse he calls a body and face. Once a man who believes in the power of blood to make others bleed (or on himself to take away the bleeding effect off his allies), bled too much to the brink of death's door and fights death herself with the power of blight
Just makes me love leper even more. Good hearted ruler, helps the less fortunate and sickly, a strong and proud warrior king who won't go out without a fight, a man with a just rage strong enough that in his fury he broke a giant sword (he wielded with one hand mind you!), and a protector of his people even to the last. And at the end of it all, embracing his place in the world and the beauty around him. His people were right to mourn his departure. What a fucking CHAD! Baldwin is a fricken legend.
Also an additional lore of Damian, he was so into hurting himself that he decided to rip his own face off. There's even a trinket called "His Prison". This is why he has that zombie-like apperrance because my man was just that downbad masochistic.
Possibly, but its shown that all the heroes you can play are capable of that, and itd debatably be on the same tier of power as defeating any of the bosses elsewhere in either game.

Well four months later and we have a minor thing to add to this in regard to Reynauld: He wasn't the best farmer, or the hand he was dealt was too harsh, but in turn, he grew to love the din of war and became scarily proficient in it. He abandoned his simple life to continue the way of war we know him for.
I have to assume they named Bigby, well, Bigby because of The Wolf Among Us. The main character of course being the literal Big Bad Wolf or "Bigby" for short. Both can turn into beasts at a moments notice, and have anger issues. Also the name "Paracelsus" seemed strange to me, but there was a real alchemist from Switzerland named Paracelsus, and he was a pretty important guy to boot. The name however isn't unisex, so our dear Plague Doctor has a boy's name. Kinda reminds me of Eivor from Assassin's Creed, Eivor is a girl's name so if you play as male Eivor it doesn't make sense.
Hello, I'm Brazilian and I saw your video about the explained history of Darkest Dungeon. What an exceptional video, keep up the great work. Here in Brazil the game is not as well known, which is a shame.
Hi, Franklin! Thanks so much for your kind words! Things have changed in my personal life, so I don’t have as much time to devote to making UA-cam videos, but I’m still working on them! This month, I’m hoping to get something made for the Darkest Dungeon II DLC, so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
“And we played the first thing that came to our heads which just so happened to be the best song in the world. It was the best song in the world.” - Sarmenti (probably)
Fantastic video, loved the segues, good job! DD definitely has the best character backstories I've seen in any game considering how much is told despite how short they are, they're all thrilling to read, and even better to listen to thanks to you
This is what true horror is in some of the people. The case where one caught glimpse of something they could not find again in the hopes of understanding. It isin't "Oh I saw a monster beyond my understanding and im scarred for life", it's subsequently spending all of your life questioning what it was you saw and spending all of your time looking for something, anything to explain it, to understand it. But all to vain, as that knowledge can no longer be found, causing an endless search that will last a lifetime
Thanks, man! Maybe I'll get there someday, but covering smaller indie game probably won't get me there! Not a big enough audience... I enjoy doing it though which is what matters most! Thanks for watching!
When it comes to bounty hunter... notice the mask he wears. Missing jaw? Broken teeth (teeth he then took)? BH often grunts and snorts (far more than the other "heroes")
He is capable of normal speach and doesn't seem to speak with any slurrs. I think it's more that he doesn't like to speak, rather than an incapability to.
Alhazred is mentioned in "A trampled Journal" from DD, where it says that he died in the ruins as he was "wreaking havoc" in the enemy lines. It's author called him the "fiery heartbeat" of their retinue. As far as my interpretation allows, Sebastian, a team member of that expedition and a highwayman, died while keeping watch. His team members, Alhazred, Hewell and the author (which I assume were both Men-at-Arms) were eating when it happened and ran over to him when they heard screams. He was gone. After Alhazred died during the subjugation of the monsters, Hewell, a very impressive persona, died too. The entry ends with the author swearing to take revenge for his comrades.
I like the reference like Dismas, the former Highwayman, being named after Saint Dismas, the Penitent Thief and the Leper King being named after King Baldwin IV amongst others like Boudica and so on
It's been requested a bunch, but I haven't made time for it just yet. If you haven't already, you should check out MutantWormGirl. She has a couple videos on the game already that will probably scratch that itch you have for story content on the games!
@@SquatchGamingChannel no worries, already been there, was just curious cuz I like seeing these kinds of channels different takes on games. Appreciate the response!
In Barristan's story, I was led to believe he was the one who took his own eye off during his nightmares. I guess its a bit subtle whatever truly happened, but it feels somehow more true to the character this way.
Honestly, I felt that way when I first read through/saw his story too, but chose to go with the story I presented in this video because of the choice of the writers to say Pride took his eye. How could the nightmares evoke a sense of Pride in him that would make him take his own eye? I felt if it was his remorse over the deaths of his men, they would have chosen “Anguish” or “Remorse” when saying what took his eye. Also, why would he be in the hospital if he wasn’t injured? Although, I guess I could have “logic-ed” myself out of the correct implication because it could also be that his Pride led to the deaths of his men which led to his nightmares which led to his self-mutilation. And he could simply have been admitted to the hospital for mental reasons. That’s probably the case… Lol. Oh, well! Just shows that I’m not perfect and that I’m just some guy talking about this stuff. Not an ever in the slightest. Lol. Thanks for watching, man. Hope you enjoyed the video outside of that error!
@@SquatchGamingChannel no, don't undervalue yourself! Your video is awesome, I loved every bit. The narration was extremely entertaining and cohesive, especially the transitions between stories. And we can't know for sure what truly happened, so it makes us both right, I guess. Thanks for the video, you're the best.
The comic for the man at arms really just means they have to add a bar of text when he’s hopeless that says, “You fools, why do you not run, I will outlive you all”
Baldwin is the 2nd main character of DD, change my mind. I like the idea of the protegee beginning his mad redemption arc and running into Baldwin who joins the cause and continues to push the protege towards his quest with his wisdom and indomitable will.
I always saw Dismas' story as slightly different, where the Mother and Child he gunned down in the carrieage was his own wife and child. But I love your videos as always, my friend!
It could be, but I think one of the Developers said it wasn't his wife and kid. Or maybe I'm thinking that he said it wasn't Reynald's family (some people were trying to tie the two together). Definitely one of the two. Lol. Thanks for watching!
Junia is based on the Vestal virgins of the Roman pagan religion - who were dedicated to the goddess Vesta. Vestals were supposed to keep the sacred flame burning and never let it go out. Junia was distracted by the couple in the garden and let the flame go out, hence the abbot gave her, and the rest of the Vestals, a truly excessive punishment. It has been confirmed that Damien the Flagellant is actually the torturer Junia defeats in her story.
lmao the disclaimer saying that this video only covers heroes out at dd2's release, then immediately going into Crusader who wasn't dd2's original relase was hilarious
I am under the impression that the bounty that gets left behind by Tardif is actually a bounty of his own making as it bears the same mask he wears. So, rather than actually acquiring bounties via goverment/persons he makes his own bounties to hunt for his own purpose.
Considering some different between each medias, the comic, the shine of reflection mini-game, the many other info like items sets in DD1, things might not be 1-1 or 100% sure. Imo, I still prefer using Comics, and DD1 sets as baseline for now. Also gonna wait to see if/when other DD1 char got added into DD2
It'll probably be a few months until that one gets done - don't have the same amount of free time anymore - but I'll get a video made for it! Thanks for the continued support, Wesley! Always great to see you!

I REALLY appreciate the long form format. Thanks a lot, Mark! Back when I first started making videos, I knew I didn't want to make content like that, and even though it hurts my performance in the algorithm, I've stuck to that decision all these years. Happy to hear that there are people out there that appreciate that decision! :)
Thanks for this video man, I week ago start a journey with chat gpt to decide who is the most powerfull character in DD, but it evolve into full story, a spin-off of how life after Ancestor could be in Hamlet, and how story of first game can be continued, also i have a lot of fun because, a types of tournaments, simulating tools, and challenges that guys have in my fiction world are never the same, for example first tournament was about 3vs3 pvp scenario where i roll dices, and use my creativity to interpret how battle is going on, then simulation of second tournament will be in real game, and guys will be doing missions in different 3 classes teams to see who are the best in terms of being capable to complete mission, and get more loot than others. Then best of 8 from 2 tournaments, and the worse 8 will be compete against each others to win 1 Official DD Olympics, and also be safe for next tournament, and the worst 2 will be send to stop "someone" from coming back and keep him to be not too powerfull in place where he is now, and where he shouldn't be. Also is only a begining of story, and i think that you see that i will be not writing it in english language haha, but i am excited, and want to share this with some people who love this lore like me. Greetings from Poland!
Yeah, things are pretty awesome! My days are spent with the family with a little bit of UA-cam work here and there. Honestly can't complain! Thanks for checking in, man! And thanks for watching!
It kind of scares me but also infuriates how some of these 3D models look better than Borderlands 3. I would love an FPS or third person platformer with these. They look awesome. Yet these really well made models and styles are often forced into very limited formats so you can barely appreciate it. It's kind of typical for dark games like this. But I enjoy how each has a flaw and is never one note perfect or just a good person.

shieldbreaker - *amani* no known reference
vestal - *junia* one of the apostles in the bible
runaway - *bonnie* no known reference
duelist - *sahar* no known reference (hey, look at me! this one is from the future!)
Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing them!
I like how the comic play into the idea of stress. In Hellion, HWM, houndmaster, Jester, musketeer*, Pleague doctor, and Vestal, you can make out the subtle imagery of the stress crown.
You singlehandedly made me love darkest dungeon. You always make great work!
Sarmenti gives new definition to angry bard noises.
It was the best song in the world.”
- Sarmenti (probably)
I didn't know how much i adore the 2d art style of every character in DD. Now i do
I like how Paracelsus achieved their goal
I love Amani's backstory!
It's so unusual, but touching for me. SB is my fav in DD😅
Keep up with the great job man!!! You're videos is always a masterpiece
The transitions you made from one character to the next were honestly really smooth! Cool video
I love this games art style.
I enjoy nearly all the characterizations but my favorite must needs be the Leper (followed by Highwayman and Houndmaster...and Graverobber...and...)
I honestly don't understand how you don't have a few hundred thousand more subscribers, you're fantastic mate.
Thanks, man! Maybe I'll get there someday, but covering smaller indie game probably won't get me there! Not a big enough audience... I enjoy doing it though which is what matters most!
Thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel Passion is so important, it shines through too. ❤️
@@lachlanmacrae1779 +1
Additionally, Bounty Hunter's lower half of his face can be seen in the promotional art for the Crimson Court DLC in the first game. He looks fine.
The fact that Alhazred can solo the shambler bro 💀
I like the reference like Dismas, the former Highwayman, being named after Saint Dismas, the Penitent Thief and the Leper King being named after King Baldwin IV amongst others like Boudica and so on
This love and respect towards great indie games rocks! Ever think about tossing your hat into the fear and hunger lore ring?
That was...great !!!!
Bravo, bravo ! I sub right after the end of the vidéo
Really looking for to see more !!! 👏👏👏
Thanks. What a neat summary to remind all these stories.
I love the presentation, Thank you!
The heroes of this game really remind me of the characters in fromsoft games
Thank you for the video ❤ I gotten into Darkest Dungeon recently so this is all cool to me lol
Thanks for watching! Happy to hear you're enjoying the games and the videos! :)
I love your story telling so much!!!!!!!!
What a dark story for them all...But sometime you take and did what you can... good video
It is cool that with the Kingdome update for Darkest Dungeon 2 one of the new enemy factions are beastmen just like Bigby.
Reynald took the going to get milk route
I always saw Dismas' story as slightly different, where the Mother and Child he gunned down in the carrieage was his own wife and child. But I love your videos as always, my friend!
It could be, but I think one of the Developers said it wasn't his wife and kid. Or maybe I'm thinking that he said it wasn't Reynald's family (some people were trying to tie the two together). Definitely one of the two. Lol.
Thanks for watching!
Baldwin is a true Chad among Kings
Junia is based on the Vestal virgins of the Roman pagan religion - who were dedicated to the goddess Vesta. Vestals were supposed to keep the sacred flame burning and never let it go out. Junia was distracted by the couple in the garden and let the flame go out, hence the abbot gave her, and the rest of the Vestals, a truly excessive punishment. It has been confirmed that Damien the Flagellant is actually the torturer Junia defeats in her story.
Great narration video!!
A couple of those backstories had me choked up
lmao the disclaimer saying that this video only covers heroes out at dd2's release, then immediately going into Crusader who wasn't dd2's original relase was hilarious
I believe he meant only covering the hero shrine lore from the dd2 launch characters
This shows that it's men that are the evil.
The light always seems to help and do actual good, all these insane rules are just mankind's madness.
God this makes the fact that I lost them in my run hurts even more
I am under the impression that the bounty that gets left behind by Tardif is actually a bounty of his own making as it bears the same mask he wears. So, rather than actually acquiring bounties via goverment/persons he makes his own bounties to hunt for his own purpose.
Alabalster made me cry for some reason
Eyyy, its out! :D the year of waiting has been worth it
Sorry you had to wait so long! Hope you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Shield breaker is the most interesting character that I came across. She liberated herself from her fears with the help of your own party.
“Everywhere… in all directions… destruction claims dominion…”
Considering some different between each medias, the comic, the shine of reflection mini-game, the many other info like items sets in DD1, things might not be 1-1 or 100% sure.
Imo, I still prefer using Comics, and DD1 sets as baseline for now.
Also gonna wait to see if/when other DD1 char got added into DD2
Thanks for the long summary
A other good vidoe dude keep you rock cant wait for the last faith
It'll probably be a few months until that one gets done - don't have the same amount of free time anymore - but I'll get a video made for it!
Thanks for the continued support, Wesley! Always great to see you!
Hi brother. Just wanted to let you know I've listened to your Hotline Miami videos multiple times - as well as other videos of yours. Very good to have on while I do other things. I REALLY appreciate the long form format. Also that you don't do the whole cringe Linus Tech Tips thumbnails with ridiculous faces, titles, Mr. Beast screaming etc. Rare thing to come across nowadays. Mark
Same
Thanks a lot, Mark! Back when I first started making videos, I knew I didn't want to make content like that, and even though it hurts my performance in the algorithm, I've stuck to that decision all these years. Happy to hear that there are people out there that appreciate that decision! :)
This is why i always play DD like a pokemon Nuzlocke.
They all have distinct backstories, so it feels weird to just replace them or have multiples
Babe wake up, Squatch made a new lore video!
I like Bigby's story. It's got a very, "Dr. Banner/Incredible Hulk," vibe to it.
Damian vs Death in shrine of reflection dd2 is the best very freaking epic
Looking forward to the darkest dungeon 2 all hero’s!
Is Bigby a reference to Bigby from The Wolf Among Us? They're both werewolves
28:58 hot fuzz in a nutshell
Leeper best character
bless the upload. hope ur doing good
Yeah, things are pretty awesome!
But I enjoy how each has a flaw and is never one note perfect or just a good person.
great video just got into the games a month ago or so i only played darkest dungeon 2 i have both but I've just forgotten to play the first
love lore videos
This please me. Continue!
Get the popcorn ready
Great stuff !!
I think the Bounty Hunter took the teeth because the crime lord destroyed his mouth before that's why the Bounty Hunter can't talk.
I like Baldwin! He’s cool!
A really well done video
Now i know who i'm sending to die for my ambitions
Addicted to DD2.
Wow it really seems like the order of the flame are the real villains...
I enjoyed this immensely
just losed reynauld to HEART ATTACK and rqed know watching this and i regret more know cuz i didnt retreated. rip reynauld 19.11.23
Damn this is a deep dive
Best video ever
Darkest Dungeon 2 won't have my full respect until we get the G.O.A.T. Reynauld the the Crusader back in the roster. Hound Master too.
Congratulations
