  • #1 MISTAKE players make on the SERVE! How to solve this and gain MAX power and spin on your serve
Which mistake is it? If you guessed the waiter's trey serve, you are absolutely correct. This is when the palm faces the sky and the racket is behind the hand. This is so common because when we first play, it makes sense to use this form for easy contact. In the beginning, we don't realize how restrictive this movement is. Players use this because they want to start playing matches before they are actually ready to do so, and it becomes a habit that is very difficult to break.
The real motion we need comes from the full arm with the elbow behind you. Check out our serve playlist for more serve lessons. The first step to achieve this advanced serve is using a neutral continental grip. Practice picking up tennis balls with this grip to start FEELING what it is like to use this grip. Bounce the ball and slice the side of the ball to also create more feel with this grip and feel what is like to slice the ball.
The fork in the road is committing to building this motion and missing serves vs keeping the waiter trey serve and making all your serves. Think of palm down and elbow back when you are serving to help develop this movement. There is no judgment where the ball is going so don't worry when you are serving. Also, film yourself when you are practicing.
If you are serving on a court, move up to the service line or go to the baseline and face the fence. You do NOT need to get every serve in the service box. Practice this and let us know how you did!

This is such great advice, John. I honestly think this is the #1 issue / mistake I see at the rec level, and I see it in the leagues my daughters play in (young teen).
I think one of the reasons it's so prevalent is that, as you've said, people start playing this way, and they learn to live with it & work around it, instead of committing to changing it. (The analogy I give is this: some people never learned to type properly, but they learn to "hunt and peck" (or just peck) quickly, so much so that they never force themselves to take a step back, learn the right way, and then eventually exceed the level they maxed out at with pecking).
It's great to see you providing a path to get away from this service "bad habit", thank you.

Great video, awesome points! As a coach, I can tell he’s has extensive experience teaching beginners learn tennis the right way. Perfect video for 3.0 or 3.5 league players learn the correct serve technique.

Great video John! My problem is that I think too much about the racquet drop and instead of just letting it happen, I’m thinking about it during my swing. I do keep the palm down. I do extend my non dominant arm. I do try to lean in to the court; however I don’t bend my knees as much because I’m an older player. Should I not think about it? The reason for asking is I have seen a video of myself and my racquet drop is not what it should be. Thanks

Hi David, Thanks for reaching out. I would need to see a video of your serve to provide a meaningful evaluation. However, my guess is a couple things: 1) Tension, 2) Over-thinking, and 3) Not certain of the sequence of movements that allow the racquet drop to occur naturally. If you would like an evaluation, please contact me through my website:: performanceplustennis.com/contact-us/
      Thanks, John

Hi John; how I find out if on serve the contact with the ball with my racket pronation is to early or late?

Very convincing advice but the problem is what is the continental grip? The pros I hear do not use the terms continental, Eastern backhand, western, they say they use a grip that is comfortable.

Hi Laurence, The Continental grip is the grip most pros use for every shot in their games except the forehand groundstroke. Serves, volleys, slice backhands, two-handed backhands, overheads, etc, When taught in the right sequence, the Continental grip becomes natural and produces the best results for all the shots mentioned. However, it can difficult to change to a Continental if you have been playing these shots with something else. I think a pro saying "use what is comfortable" is a cop-out to either being lazy, or not knowing to develop the skill correctly...so they take the easy way out. I have more lessons both here on UA-cam and my website that present how to find the Continental grip. Thanks, John

Thumbs up thumbs down, first do 10 times, then pretend to throw thumbs up thumbs down, finally with racquet thumbs up to thumbs down pronation
