- The Douglas DC-3 is a flying legend and the most successful airliner in aviation history. The legendary aircraft dominated both military and civil aviation since its introduction in 1935. The highly reliable and very robust DC-3 was used on all fronts during the Second World War. During the Berlin Blockade, the DC-3 won many children’s heart between blood, sweat and tears when candies were dropped from the airplane. The German children christened the candy-dropping aircraft Raisin Bomber. Nowadays the legendary aircrafts carries the nickname "Grand Old Lady“. The greatly restored DC-3 carries the original Swissair livery of the late 1930s. The dull roar of the Pratt & Whitney radial engines is tirelessly announcing the amazing success story of the Douglas DC-3.

Retired pilot, never been or ever will be a more elegant aircraft. Simply, purely and totally, poetry in motion!!
Thank you! I love this good & old DC-3! What a beauty!
A timeless design indeed.
I had the pleasure of being a passenger in one back in my youth, in the early 70s. Just beautiful.
So true. Beautiful. No need to design anything else...this was perfection.
I hope someday I may fly in one. Shame I live in Newfoundland!
Finally somebody doesn't ruin a great video with music.
I love the old DC-3's, and I appreciate that you did not superimpose some obnoxious music over the sound of the big radial engines. Good job.
J Dahllquist I love how flat the earth is.
Aba Zaba I love how flat your head is.
In Brazil the government destroyed a DC-3 (DC-3 PP-VBF), whose was used in WW2 and was still whole, despite the work it would do to restore it, to auction it's pieces.
strong battery and a quick start.....that DC-3 is in great shape. absolute beauty. most people wouldn't recognize this classic piece of aviation history....30 years after the Wright Bros......that engine started pretty quick for an old radial. fantastic video
I have always loved the DC3. That polished aluminum just makes it more beautiful.
The balance between braking and elevator and speed is nothing short of astonishing. Superb
Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful old girl she is, an absolute classic.
Girl? I think military aircraft veteran was a genre
Yes it is
Javoeimuito. nesse avião. éunclassico daavoação
DaaviaçãoOk
if other planes could be referred as "she", I would prefer DC-3 as "he"... with the tail dragger that makes the cockpit pointing at the sky, complete with the thick wing, even in motionless, you can feel that he sits there majestically and spread his wings ready to fly... you know what I mean if you look at 0:46
Very well done,Matt. Always great to see the most reliable, longest lasting and very versitile airplane ever built. Great restoration work.
Thank you very much, Allen!
these classic planes are the dream of many.
first time I saw a Cessna 195 with the polished aluminum, that was the one for me. I did grow up in Wichita and dad worked at the Pawnee plant
Nothing else sounds like a DC-3. Mesmerized.
+Raymond Jones There are in fact planes still flying that have the same type Pratts, for instance the Catalina.
Such a distinctive sound! The DC3 brings back many childhood memories.
Thanks for watching. The DC-3 is a wonderful and most successful plane ever.
Absolutely beautiful bird, and that DC-3 ironic sound at take off, one of the best DC-3 videos I've view so far.
Thank you so much!
Matt .. Cudos for a fine effort on this. It sounded like Italian when the plane landed..of course Swiss and Italy share a long border. Was it ??
Brilliant what a sight and sound. Such a beautiful piece of aviation history and so highly polished. Excellent.
The DC-3 is an amazing success story. I especially like the story of the Raisin Bombers. Thank you very much my friend!
WOW, how she shines.
One of the noblest airplanes ever built.
Yes, a wonderful aircraft with a long success story.
Typo....Good choice of words...
In the 80's they were flying DC3 out of Key West airport daily to Miami and Tampa. Renting a cottage 1/2 mile from KWIA I could hear and see them going out and in all day. They were about 300 ft. altitude flying overhead.....
What a. SOUND. !!
@@michaelcelani8325 you lucky sonnuva-
A radial engine is the best sounding thing in life! I miss it!!! Still heard them a bit when I was a kid still ln use. Mid 80's
Takes me back to being a kid when we lived close to Blackpool airport. Lots of DC-3s (flew to the Isle of Man in one) and De Havilland Rapides flying around!
My longest plane flight ever. Flew a DC3 from Patrick AFB in Florida to Ascension Island in the middle of the Atlantic back in the 60's. We just had 1 stop for fuel in Recife, Brazil. The whole flight was some 36 hours long.
+Philip Hughes WOW! Thanks for sharing your memories. It is really great to hear! Cheers Matt
Impossible. The endurance of the DC3 is around 8 hours. With a fuel stop that woul be 16 hours.
Every time I see one of these, I have to remind myself that it is 85 years since they first took to the air.
How did Douglas manage to produce such a beauty in 1936?
The finest aircraft yet conceived in the mind of Man.
Thank you very much! ✈️ 🙏
Beautiful plane, I have a DC-3 painted in Eastern Airlines. Runs and flys! It is my main mode of long distance transportation besides the train. Also my favorite plane.
You are one blessed person !
Cant believe they still use these even though they came out 80 years ago!
The Douglas DC-3 is one of the most successful airliners in history. A beauty! :)
Actually almost 85 years now---and many still gong strong.
Cessna trainers have left the chat
The only replacement for a DC-3 is another DC-3.
because they are simple and mechanical compared to 737 or anything like that.. Even oldest plane in the world is still flyable, 116 years old if im not wrong.
>^..^< Easily the most pristine DC3 I have ever seen. Big congratulations to the mechanics that restored her and maintain her to this near purfect condition.
And to the pilots that take her to the heavens where she truly belongs with such ease, professionalism. This bird is in truly good hands.
I long for the days of vacuum tube radios and radial piston powered aircraft. I guess I was born in the wrong time.
My son is special needs and he really likes antique airplanes ✈🛩🛫🛬 like the DC-3 he finds them very interesting.
Thank you for your kind comment. Wishing you and your son all the best.

Lindo demais.

Meu sonho é voar em um desse.
O mais lindo DC-3 do Planeta.
Obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal.

A beautiful and exquisitely presented plane filmed and presented superbly! (I almost ran out of superlatives there). Thank you for this. We just saw this very plane in the movie Sebastian III. About 20 years ago I had the good fortune to fly from Sydney to Mudgee for lunch at a winery before returning in a DC3. What a privilege - had a tear in my eye as we took off! Cheers and thanks from Aus - Dave
Thank you for your kind words, Dave! The DC-3 is a beautiful aircraft. When I filmed this DC-3, I was waiting for takeoff and then again for landing. For this I had to call my wife several times to postpone lunch. Finally, I went home later in the afternoon with flowers and a dessert. I just had to film this DC-3. Greetings, Matt
Amazing video. Douglas DC 3, the best plane ever made.
Thank you! Definitely on of the most successful planes ever made.
Those buzzing P&W! what a music!
To see this plane from the backdrop of green mountains and fields definitely an aviation spotters paradise
The DC-3 is a beautiful aircraft.
Nothing, and I mean nothing sounds this good.
Thank you very much! ✈️ 🙏
Wowwww spectacular!! I love the sound when it was accelerated in full blast during running and take off!
Thank you very much!
I do like modern aviation but we can’t forget the old planes
Yes that is true!
i saw this plane flying over my house!!! It was an old klm dc-3! Really beatiful
DC-3 is amazing! Thanks for watching.
Me2 last week
My great-grandfather was a pilot on the DC 3 aircraft. He loves being a pilot
That's amazing to hear about your great-grandfather's connection to the DC-3 aircraft! It's such a legendary plane with a rich history in aviation. The Douglas DC-3 is truly iconic, known for its reliability and role in revolutionizing air travel. It's wonderful that your great-grandfather loved being a pilot on this historic aircraft. Thank you for sharing this special family connection with us! ✈️👨✈️
@matthiashaenni You are so welcome! 🤗
I was handed an old airline book (1975) and this beautiful plane was in it with full specs and framework diagram. So great to see it still flying its nice just listen to these old turbo-prop engines at work. Thank you.
Radial Piston Engines bro. Pratt and Whitney R-1830 series.
I love the sound of old school. This plane really reminds me of Braddock missing in action III
Still a beauty in the Jet Age...
Thank you very much!
One of the worlds most important aircraft and there are no photos or films of the first takeoff or landing. For the test pilots it was just another day at the office, just a slightly bigger version of the DC2. And another fact that amazes me,,, in 17 years time the design will be 100 years old and it will still look beautiful.
Excellent video, with superb editing and very high quality sound - A refreshing change from the hundreds of rubbish films posted here - Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this great comment! Much appreciated, Matt
You are welcome Matthias - it is well merited!
One of the best edited films for aircraft I have seen on youtube so far.
Thank you very much! What a compliment!
Great video! I see one of these parked every day in Shelbyville, TN and I always want to stop and ask for a fly.
Dc-3 perfect example of art.
True! Thanks for watching!!
Along with the army jeep, one of the most iconic and perfect designs ever.
I love that plain, the first time I ever flew on it with ETHIOPIAN back in 1970 !
+Solomon Pilot Great to hear!
What a beauty
A DC-3 looks awesome in silver.
Thank you!
One of the most beautyful airplane today!!
DC 3 is one of the most beautiful airplane i think.
I flew in one of these DC-3 from Dallas, Texas to Ft Leonard Wood, MO on 29 June 1962. I was en route to basic US Army training there.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope it was a great experience for you!
I loved to fly in these old birds. Trans Texas 1966 !
good catch
Thank you so much!
What a brilliant video! Great sound on the start up. Love seeing these legendary aircraft.
Thank you very much! I especially love the DC-3 story of the Raisin Bomber.
Simply gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
I hope I look this good at that age.
Love to hear the engine Roar......
Best engine music!
What a beautiful plane.
Thank you!
What an amazing catch, huge super thanks for sharing and recording!!!
+Planes123 My pleasure!
What a plane. Decades ago I did the Revell model and planned a custom build-out for myself ... never did get it though !
That sounds like a really cool project you had in mind! The Swissair Douglas DC-3 is indeed a classic and iconic aircraft with a rich history. It's amazing to see them in action. Maybe one day you'll have the opportunity to see your custom build-out come to life. Thank you for sharing your story!
This aircraft, Douglas DC3, brings me pleasant memories, when I was military parachutist, at that time, if we compare it with the plane where I took the course, the trimotor Junker, was an innovation in technology and progress. In the only Junker did 6 jumps, the Douglas the cent and peaks that I made, therefore, I insist that it brings back pleasant memories, the latter was more fast, therefore the output of it had to do it with more power, there were no problems. These memories will remain in my mind while I live, or at least while it works the brain computer work.
Oh, what a TREAT Matthias!
Wonderful details in your description.
Stunnnnnning images from your camera.
An absolute treasure !!! THANKS !!!
My heart jump with joy when I filmed this good old DC-3. Thank you very much for your kind comment, Karin. Have a great week!
What a beautiful plane it’s fabulous, magnificent
Thank you!
Those were Beautiful Planes 😊
Thank you for your comment! The Douglas DC-3 is indeed a beautiful aircraft. Fun fact: It first flew in 1935 and revolutionized air travel with its reliability and range. It played a crucial role in World War II and is still in operation today, making it one of the most iconic and long-lasting aircraft in aviation history. I'm glad you appreciate its beauty! 😊✈️
Never new how much I enjoyed 1080p until I saw this capture. Wow!! Only thing that surprised me was the lack of smoke plumes when those engines burn off oil that accumulates in the "jugs" prior to startup.
Great, great video (and audio).
WOW that is a compliment :) Thanks for watching it in HD! It was not a cold startup. I think the engines smoke fairly more on a cold morning after a night layover.
Pity these are not made anymore. A relatively simple design, rugged and reliable. Easy to maintain and restore compared to modern aircraft. I think they still have their uses and just how many are still flying today is a testament to that.
In context of a clever and long-lasting design that just works, two machines come into mind: UAZ 2206 (452) "bukhanka" (in production since 1965) and Lada Niva (produced since 1977).
My special needs son agrees with you on that completely!
Merci!
Superb footage of this stunning DC-3 Matthias....She looks so awesome....keeping this video in my favourites....Best wishes....Steve.
Thank you so much Steve. I really love the DC-3 and especially the moving story of the Raisin Bomber. Take care, Matthias
Muito show esses aviões antigos
I flew with you from Zurich to Berne...long long time ago..a kind plane, easy to fly.
AWESOME Plane!!! its one of my most favorite Love it
Great video. Great plane. I think the DC-3 is the most successful plane ever made. Flown all over the world, for millions of miles carrying, well- you name it and it probably did. Thanks for no stupid music during the video.
Thank you for your kind words. I also think it is the most successful aircraft ever built.
Love that old planes, here in the Netherlands we have the DDA (Dutch Dakota Association) Classic Airlines. You can book a flight with them.
nice look and nice sound that a DC 3
Thank you!
¡Saludos! 🛫✈️
wonderful beautiful machine and useful God bless you ❤❤❤
Thank you very much! ✈️ 🙏
Simply superb..the aircraft..and the pure sound of the engine's... thanks for sharing...!!
Thanks!
@@matthiashaenni you are most welcome friend!! We aviation enthusiast's love these kinds of videos!!!
Matt, a buddy of mine flew one of these appx.20 years ago for a cargo company from hamilton , Ohio at Hogan airfield, he said was a very durable, reliable , and rugged plane , but all of the the controls, were very tight and stiff, he said picture an older auto with no power steering, no power brakes, no a/c, etc... i had always wanted to fly one, and he said, no you don't,lol. I know some people have converted the engines to torbo props, but his was not, outside of the reliability factor, he did not have a lot to say to compliment the DC-3, lol
Steve Logan your buddy must have been a weak guy.
Bat Man he is, he is 5'6"" and about 130 pounds, smart fellow though
The sound of freedom...
I was amazed by how quickly the tailwheel gets off the ground. She sure doesn't roll very far before becoming airborne, not something you can do in really any modern aircraft of that size. This aircraft was designed to run off short, rough, unimproved airstrips, a role in which they still serve to this day as the only replacement for a DC-3 is another DC-3.
The DC-3 is the most successful airliner. It sounds odd but it really is. Cheers!
Saw one of these abandoned in a scrapyard miles from my house... I wish I could see it fly like this one!
That makes me cry.
What a beautiful look and sound. 😮❤️
Thank you :) Yes, I totally agree!
Que avião espetacular.
Wow what a beauty
Wow, that plane is such a beauty! Love the livery. Excellent video, fantastic smooth camera work. enjoyed and liked it a lot! :D
Thank you so much! My heart jump with joy when I filmed this "Grand Old Lady" DC-3.
I wish I could fly in an airplane like that.
My special needs son hopes so too! He is on the autism spectrum and has an old soul and sure that in the future they go back to building vehicles with character, simplicity, and no microprocessors in them just pure mechanics.
I love this sound
Thank you!
Já voei num DC-3, delícia de voo.
Nice nice nice nice . I love this plane.
Thank you!!
Absolutely stunning aircraft! Amazing footage!
Thank you very much! I love the DC-3 and especially the story of the Raisin Bombers.
I've seen this at Duxford a couple of times, lovely aircraft. I believe Froissair have a number of vintage aircraft.
