    I don't know why you say he's a polarising figure. He's a rather celebrated figure in Australia. I remember in early primary school we had some guest speaker show up to talk to each class, but instead of telling us about stranger danger or whatever the usual guest speakers would talk about, he told us the whole story about how Ned Kelly earned his green silk sash and how he was an outlaw fighting against a corrupt police force. He's genuinely considered a national hero.

    • @frankiethetiger5748
      @frankiethetiger5748 2 роки тому +41

      Hey, also an aussie here. I know it's really hard to believe considering how loved he is by pretty much everyone, but I've met a few people (not many by any means) who think Ned Kelly was just an outlaw like all others. So for some dummies I guess he had to make that point but as you said, yeah he's pretty much the face of Australian history.

      People in the 1800 spoke different than they do now, and the ones that were educated enough to be able to read, did a lot more reading than people do now, because there wasn't much else to do in the 1800s.
      All that reading being done by most everyone that was able to read meant that people in general had much larger vocabularys and that was reflected in the way they wrote and spoke back then.

    Aussie here. Long winded post incoming...
    I grew up from a family that fought the war in Yugoslavia decades ago, and even my parents who weren't born on these shores found respect for Ned. The tenacity, the grit, the unvarnished honesty, the everburning fighters spirit are traits I grew up admiring. No one treats your family like that, police or otherwise. No government has the right to treat it's people like that, regardless of circumstance. Now, seeing how our beloved country is devolving into madness, especially my state of Victoria, more than a few people are probably considering buying plates to make armour.
    Yes, the Kelly's did things that were bad, even horrible, but given the circumstances that led to them, I can hardly blame them. Personally, I'm glad Ned is resting in peace now, with a marked grave, and when lockdowns ease, I plan to take the trip up to the site and pay respects.
    So thank you Ned. You weren't an angel, but you were something that a lot of politicians and cops aren't right now, and it's something we desperately need. Honest.
    And thank you Dank. A pain in the ass to research and record, to be sure, but you've done every Aussie and Irish viewer of your channel a great service. Cheers mate. Can't wait to see you have an interview with Isaac Butterfield.

Digesting dry facts is tough and stories that inspire me to look into the story and seek the lessons that I can apply to my life. Count Dankula is an orator, he has a gift at telling stories. History is more than knowing dates, names, and places. He is not a research academic teacher he is sparking interest for me to learn and it's entertaining to watch the count tell a story and encourage us to look into the story, and find a way to share a story that inspired people to seek the truth of amazing people of courage and how it can inspire people to rally around freedom. Encouraging people to question the authorities and to get a fair shake and treat people with respect is the lesson. Ned was a bad man, but he brought light and his actions forced the authorities to examine how they treat people and how the law needs to be applied. It is an example of a brave man who challenged the system because of the way our authorities reacted by barging into a home and disrespecting a family was wrong and people are outraged when authorities use their power to pursue a personal vendetta. The lesson is the authorities need to obey the law and base their actions on evidence not by a personal vendetta. People who enforce are laws must have respect for the people they interact with and uphold the laws they enforce. That is what I learn from the story. I appreciate your post Sam, I appreciate the count and his team who brought light to a controversial character and the story of Ned Kelly.

      @Blaze Temp - mate learn basic English. I didn’t even finish high school and can at least write legibly.
      Firstly- most Australian’s aren’t English, we are of British descent. In case you weren’t listening to Dank, most of the names in his slightly botched retelling of Ned Kelly’s life were Irish, including the Jacks (Police). You only have to look at the list of our Prime Minsters and you’ll see names like - McMahon, Menzies, Gillard, McEwen, Hughes and our current PM - Morrison. Some of our famous sports stars- Warne, McGrath, Frazier. Famous actors- Errol Flynn, Paul Hogan (Croc Dundee), Barry Humphries (Dame Edna). Etc etc --All of these names are Irish, Welsh and Scot.
      I’m a descendant of 9 convicts (4 from mother, 5 from father- that we know of), 7 were Irish, 1 Welsh, 1 English.
      There is plenty of English blood here but there is just as much from the rest of Britain/Ireland as well.
      Secondly- after the convicts finished their sentences, they weren’t given a pass back to Britain/Ireland, instead they were given menial jobs in settlements for bugger all pay or given an arid (dry) piece of land with no live stock and told to produce something in order to pay taxes that were sent back to England. There was very little infrastructure, medical facilities etc that people should expect after being taxed more than people in Britain. That’s why in 1901, we said F.U and said we are no longer paying taxes to England and we will build our own nation.
      We have thrived ever since. No hand outs

    Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall were my local bushrangers. Ben Hall was one of the nicest ones Frank was the local butcher, where the meat came from tho....
    Late one night on the road Ben and Frank asked my great great great grandfather if they could stay the night with the family group as they could help if some bushrangers came along. Of course they knew who they were from the butchery and were not looking for a fight so said yes.
