Oilskin Tarp Tent Camping in Cold Weather

  • Winter camping overnight trip in conditions below freezing. Set up my 10 x 10 oilskin tarp in a tarp tent configuration to have the most coverage from the elements and trap as much heat as possible. The projected temperatures were high of 36°F with a low of 23°F. It actually got down to 19°F.
Felt a little rushed with the filming as the original location for this trip had to be changed last minute. Wound up going to a nearby campground and just made the best of it.
After I got everything set up I made a fire using flint and steel. Didn't have a lot of daylight to gather as much wood as I would have liked. Cooked some rice and Spam up in my cup, ate and called it a night.
The frost really set in overnight! Woke up to 19°F and just heated up some coffee over an alcohol stove and packed up.
Going to be scouting some better areas for future videos!
Thank you for watching! Hope you enjoy! Please like, comment and subscribe! Would love to hear your feedback and I'll do my best to answer any questions.

Nice setup. I had the exact setup for one of my deer hunts this past November and also experienced frost on some of my gear when I woke up. I’m 6’3” and this is not the most ideal set up for me, but it was a good test to see what works for me and what doesn’t.
If you had a to do it all over again would you buy the Jaakari XL or stick with Large?
Keep doing your thing guy. Enjoy the peacefulness of nature and keep the faith brother 🕊️

This setup is definitely smaller than you would expect. I even was a little too close to the tarp because of how thick the sleeping pad is. Planning on trying it soon with my 14ft x 14ft DD tarp. Should be a lot bigger.
I personally would stick with the large. I can't imagine getting any heavier than the large is with what I can fit in it. The pouches add a lot of capacity as well. Definitely not a pack that I would want to hike with more than a couple miles. That traditional gear has some serious weight to it. Honestly I'm so glad it's spring. Pulling out the lightweight gear is nice. Thanks so much for watching! Grace and Peace! God bless!

These bags are nice. I used to use a heavy-duty trash bag tied on with a rubber band, then I bought a flextail pump. Doubles as a tent light and doesn't weigh any more.

The Numancia poncho looked great in that environment. Great tarp set up, a classic!

That's what we were shooting for! Glad you liked it. My quilt got a little damp from the frost on the tarp, but other than that it was pretty cozy.

You as well! Was just talking to my wife about the conversation that we had when you were here about using a phone to record videos. That's what I've been doing. Lot to learn with the recording and editing. Definitely a lot more work than I expected. Videos should get better the more we learn.

I am a decendant of Tsalagiyehli and Lakota Nations. I love native flute. A little more variety would be appreciated if the music is to be played the whole time. Otherwise ok vid.

Thanks for watching! I love the Native American flute. Definitely want to add more of it in the future with more variety. I'm pretty limited in what I can use right now. Computer broke a little while ago so my editing software is not great. Hoping to get better at the filming and all headed forward. I learned a little bit about the Lakota Nations when I was up in South Dakota.

@@awayinthewilderness4319 I've always been into languages. Studied French and German in high school. Afterwards, I figured I'd learn Lakota. How hard could it be? Wrong. So wrong. I didn't get past the third lesson.
