    Great video. Do you know the difference between the LAING P-4S vs P-04 ??

    Interesting review but I found your footage was swaying, something i'd not be happy with. Has it improved?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  8 років тому

      the main reason is usually the operator, in this case me :) it also depends greatly on your setup of course. some lenses are more forgiving than others.
      this video is two years old now, so these days I tend to see things differently - with prices adjusting and technology moving forward, I don't see much room for these handheld stabilisers with all the gimbals on the market

      +Lucas Pfaff thanks for the reply, I was chatting with another friend who said its really hard to get steady footage. I guess I'm hoping for something that will give 'steady' footage without spending a fortune. What kit would you recommend now then?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  8 років тому

      +SLR Coaching.com it depends on the budget and setup of course, but if you want relatively simple steady footage then you might not get around a gimbal

    My P-04 has two levels one on the base and one on top platform but I also had one of the first P-04 so I see just from your video somethings changed. They need to make it so the the top head locks into one place just like the bottom so you can line up even faster.

    Got mine delivered last month Lucas. Unfortunately I wasn't able to really use it for a couple of weeks due to a back injury. I thoroughly agree with you, it is a great system and quite easy to use. Getting it to the perfect balance will take a bit more practice for me though. And your comment about the level being at the base ... yes, it is quite annoying. Now, I have a quick release plate with a level built-in which makes it much easier.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      That's a good thing with the quick release levels! :) Great idea.
      I never uploaded further test-footage of my monoCam because of a foot injury, couldn't walk well last summer. I feel that! Get healthy soon! :)

    hi Lucas, I bought the latest version if this one P-04s, my problem is that the screw that attaches the camera and the plate is kinda loose after just a few minute of use or even when I tilt the camera a bit. This really annoys me as I have to release the plate to tighten it every single time. Do you have any idea to fix that? Thank you!

    Hi Lucas, great review! Why does this not have more views?!
    I'm deciding between this and the MonoCam. Do you have any recommendation on what to get? I will be using it with a 5D3 with batterygrip and a 24-70/2,8 IS mostly. Later with a mic on top.
    Thank you!

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      It depends a bit what you declare more important to you! :)
      The Monocam is easier to transport, I'd say a bit faster to setup... but not as good with heavy weight. Yet again, a 5D isn't thaaat heavy, and the newer Monocams with CF-pole and foot are quite fancy :)

    Hi Lucas ! I bought the Laing P-04 , I received it yesterday. It looks very good but the top plate has an up and down play , even if it is locked. The whole head assembly has a slight play. Can you tell me if you have this problem with your Laing ? Thank you very much. Also the carbon fiber looks very thin and I think it can brake if you lock the screw very tight.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      Hm, i have a problem understanding what you mean with up/down play? :(
      Carbon can always break, even on a 1,5K Sachtler tripod, that's the problem with them in general! :( in germany, we say "nach fest kommt ab", which means that after something sits tight, it will be gone if you turn further. Just don't :)

    • @spiritled8816
      @spiritled8816 10 років тому

      hi, I don't know if you are still having the issue of "play in the head assembly," but the camera plate can be adjusted forward/backward as well as side to side and there are two separate locks for the plate. If you still have play I would use an allen wrench to tighten all the screws on the head assembly. The top of the carbon fiber pole where the assembly attaches has an thick inner metal ring to reinforce the carbon fiber. I won't say that you can't crack the pole by tightening it, but it's not just carbon fiber at the ends of the pole so it's not as fragile as you might think. hope that helps.

      Justin Arrington hey there, it really depends a lot on location and which shipping method you use. For example, I received from china within 2 days with express or sometimes 2months if not. My preferred method is Yanwen Express as it's relatively fast (1-2weeks) and moderately cheap. Of courseI can't tell for your location, only for mine :(

    good review. I bought a Laing P-04 a while ago and had some issues with the gimbal where it would pan and tilt badly on slow moving shots. After watching Nitsan Simantov's tutorial on replacing the lubricant of a glidecam I decided to try doing that on my P-04 and the stabilizer works so much better. Here is some footage that I shot after changing the lubricant in the bearing: Nature Walk (Laing P-04 Stabilizer/Sony FDR AX100)
    Just to be clear, I didn't add any software stabilizing. If anyone is interested I can create a detailed tutorial of how to disassemble the Laing P-04 gimbal and change the lubricant (at your own risk of course :)

    Hello ! I own the Flycam C5 (aluminium) , but now I want to buy a new steadicam and I am thinking at P-04 Laing , Wieldy Iron and Flycam C5 (carbon fiber). Please help me with a decision. All the footage from youtube for P-04 is very shaky and I don't know what to do. Almost all Flycam footage is spectacular. I did not shoot too much with my flycam because aluminium is very , very heavy. I hope if I will buy the carbon version would be a huge difference.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      This depends mostly on the operator. A good operator will shoot awesome stuff with cheap stabilizers, while the best stabilizer is useless in the hands of someone who isn't good at it/not trained.
      I like the simple and slick design of LAING, and also how great it is to adjust. AFAIK, the new Flycams also have usable quick-adjustments now, but the pole stills slides out of the stabilizer which is a no-go for me.
      The gimbals from LAING are great, and the featureset is rich. Look at the Steadycam-Demo with Arm+Vest; not really shaky there :)

  • @zcarenow
    @zcarenow 10 років тому

    still deciding between this and Flycam C5... so is the P04 really heavy? so it worth getting the P04 over P03?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      Flycam made a huge step with the C5, but I still prefer the LAING. It's the little things, like better head-adjustments and the pole doesn't fall off when you want to make it longer (the C5 simply falls out, the LAING has a stopper)

    Aufgrund deines Videos habe ich mir ebenfalls das P-04S Schwebestativ zugelegt, doch leider lässt es sich mit meiner GH4 (inkl. 12-35 mm Objektiv; ~860 g) nicht richtig kalibrieren. Ich habe das Gegengewicht gut austariert, aber die kardanische Aufhängung neigt sich immer wieder und scheint nicht ordnungsgemäß zu funktionieren. Wenn ich z. B. das Schwebestativ auf ein Stativ hänge, kann ich die Wasserwagen dadurch austarieren, dass ich das Schwebestativ etwas weiter nach vorne oder zu den Seiten drücke. D. h., dass die Aufhängung viel zu steif ist und nicht wirklich frei schwingt bzw. sich der Erdanziehung ausgleicht. Damit ist das "Fliegen" nicht möglich, da die Kamera sich immer etwas bewegt.
    Theoretisch müssten auch die seitlichen Schrauben an der kardanischen Aufhängung so angepasst sein (rechte oder linke Schraube etwas rein), damit diese justiert ist. Bei mir sind beide Schrauben im exakt gleichen Abstand. Das sieht zwar schön symmetrisch aus, aber ich bezweifel, dass es damit korrekt justiert ist. Auch das Hinzupacken von mehr Gewicht (z. B. zusätzliche aufgestecktes Mikrofon) oder noch mehr Gegengewichte (um das Neigen zu unterbinden) helfen nicht.
    Weißt du noch einen Rat? Oder könnte es einfach sein, dass ich einen nicht justierten / defekten Gimbal habe? Gibt es eine Möglichkeit zu testen, ob die kardanische Aufhängung defekt ist?
    Danke im Voraus für deine Hilfe!

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  8 років тому

      +o0PGJ0o das klingt tatsächlich erstmal danach, dass das Gerät eben leider nicht richtig balanciert ist. Die Kamera scheint oben drauf nicht korrekt im Mittelpunkt zu stehen, spricht die Justage vor/zurück, sowie links/rechts scheint nicht korrekt zu sein :o
      Natürlich kann man ein defektes Gelenk nie ausschließen, da gibt es dann nur der Kontakt zum Verkäufer mit entsprechendem Bild/Videomaterial

    • @PhilippJansen
      @PhilippJansen 8 років тому

      Danke für deine Rückmeldung. Das Laing P-04S Schwebestativ habe ich wieder zurückgegeben, weil
      1) es nicht meine GH4 fein genug ausbalancieren konnte (Pendelbewegungen; vermutlich wegen der fehlerhaften Aufhängung),
      2) das Stativ mit einem leichten Ölfilm beschmiert war,
      3) das Gerät (insbesondere dessen Schaumstoffgriff) sowie die Tasche einen penetranten Ölgeruch verströmten und
      4) die Gewichte an den Seiten nicht entgratet waren.
      Nach jeder Benutzung des Stativs musste ich mir die Hände waschen, um das Öl und dessen Geruch von meinen Händen loszuwerden. Jetzt habe ich mir eine Glidecam HD 1000 zugelegt, die diese Probleme nicht aufweist (abgesehen davon, dass keine Tasche im Lieferumfang enthalten ist). Dennoch scheine ich sehr großes Pech zu haben und auch diese Glidecam besitzt keinen korrekt justierten Gimbal: Wird der Griff links von der Kamera gehalten, zieht der Gewichtsschlitten nach vorne. Wird der Griff an andere Positionen versetzt, ist die Kamera waagerecht. Mal sehen, ob die Ersatz-Glidecam funktionieren wird.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  8 років тому

      +o0PGJ0o aiaiai, das klignt wirklich nach defektem Gerät. So etwas passiert ja gerne mal durch falsche Lagerung/Lieferung. Wobei mich das mit dem Geruch wundert, mir fiel da nichts auf :o aber Montagsmodelle gibt es (ja leider) überall :(
      Ich glaube eh nicht, dass klassische Schwebestative im mittleren Preissegment noch lange bestehen werden. Da ist die Konkurrenz durch Gimbals zu groß

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  9 років тому

      Depends mostly on your skillset :) you can of course also you a more tele-like lens, it depends a bit on what kinda shots you want to achieve.
      For the "usual" Stabilizer work, a 24-35mm equiv (35mm photographic) would be a good starter, that would be around 8-12mm on a Blackmagic Pocket (Speedboosters or Lens Turbos are your friend here)
      Also, I wouldn't get too much into comparing the crop of a camera to 35mm photographic ones, I'd more compare it to S35 if at all (much better here: S16! :) )

      I fell like the LAING stabilizers are a bit better with the flying, but the MonoCam is more portable such, if that's more important to you.

      definately look out for the total weight as I have no idea how much the C100 weights in total, but it carried my BMCC so it should do the trick :) yet don't forget to get lifiting a lot, that's a heavy load to take :)

    Do you prefer the Laing over the Monocam?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      Only for the heavy loads, as the monoCam does get problems with counterweight. For small setups (and with that I also mean a fullframe camera with a normal Lens), I'd prefer the latter tbh

    can you use this for a gopro?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  9 років тому +1

      You'd have to add some weight on top so it works properly, I think there are better devices for a GoPro than this :/

    will it work with a gopro?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому +1

      I think a GoPro is waaaaaay to light for this; so you have to add weight to the top to use it properly. But in the end, it would work!

    The Stabilizer is ok, but i hate it that you no longer can do upside down shots like you could with the 03 version...

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      Hm, the P-03 is somewhat the same in the base design. How was it achievable back then but not anymore, what changed?

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      *****
      But it's too little adjustment in most setups for the handle; you'd need more to to it properly :(

    To bad there are no german links :/

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      Und wenn es welche gäbe, wäre der Preis vermutlich MINDESTENS doppelt so hoch. Ein Fotga ND Fader kostet hier im Land 70€, wo ich ihn für knapp 15€ im Ausland kriege.
      Und das kann ich nicht, und will ich nicht, als guten Deal anpreisen :(
      Wenn man den Import heutzutage ein wenig geschickt anstellt, ist er schneller als mancher Inlandsversand und kostet nicht einmal Zoll.

    • @zerobambiro
      @zerobambiro 10 років тому

      Bei beiden Links steht nur leider, dass sie nicht nacht Deutschland liefern. Was meinst du mit geschickt anstellen? Ich hätte nach deinem Review auch gerne so ein Teil.

      zB nicht DHL nehmen - die sind schnell, aber sehr Zoll-ig :o) Yanwen Express kommt in der Mehrzahl der Fälle um den Zoll herum.
      Wenn Du stark interessiert bist, kann ich Dir die Adresse vom offiziellen Vertrieb geben, die auch nach DE schicken :)

    • @zerobambiro
      @zerobambiro 10 років тому

      Das wäre super. bin auf jeden fall sehr interessiert. Hast mich überzeugt. Ich schwank noch ein wenig zwischen der noch günstigeren Flycam Nano. Hab mit der nämlich auch schon super Aufnahmen gesehen und denke so langsam, dass der unterschied da nicht wirklich groß ist sobald mal die Dinger ausbalanciert hat.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff  10 років тому

      artimachtpartyy
      Und da sprichst Du den Knackpunkt an: wenn man sie ausbalanciert hat. Die Flycams sind im Ausbalancieren schrecklich :( da verschwendet man Zeit und Verstand... man stellst sich das gar nicht so nervig vor, wie es wirklich ist. Balancieren muss man immer, und da trennt sich dann die Spreu vom Weizen.
      Neben anderen "Kleinigkeiten" wie den deutlich besseren Gimbal, und dass das Teil hier sehr viel mehr tragen kann (wenn man es braucht), die Nano aber schnell an ihre Grenzen kommt! :(
      die eMail-Adresse schicke ich Dir als PN! :)
