the main reason is usually the operator, in this case me :) it also depends greatly on your setup of course. some lenses are more forgiving than others. this video is two years old now, so these days I tend to see things differently - with prices adjusting and technology moving forward, I don't see much room for these handheld stabilisers with all the gimbals on the market
+Lucas Pfaff thanks for the reply, I was chatting with another friend who said its really hard to get steady footage. I guess I'm hoping for something that will give 'steady' footage without spending a fortune. What kit would you recommend now then?
+SLR Coaching.com it depends on the budget and setup of course, but if you want relatively simple steady footage then you might not get around a gimbal
My P-04 has two levels one on the base and one on top platform but I also had one of the first P-04 so I see just from your video somethings changed. They need to make it so the the top head locks into one place just like the bottom so you can line up even faster.
Got mine delivered last month Lucas. Unfortunately I wasn't able to really use it for a couple of weeks due to a back injury. I thoroughly agree with you, it is a great system and quite easy to use. Getting it to the perfect balance will take a bit more practice for me though. And your comment about the level being at the base ... yes, it is quite annoying. Now, I have a quick release plate with a level built-in which makes it much easier.
That's a good thing with the quick release levels! :) Great idea. I never uploaded further test-footage of my monoCam because of a foot injury, couldn't walk well last summer. I feel that! Get healthy soon! :)
hi Lucas, I bought the latest version if this one P-04s, my problem is that the screw that attaches the camera and the plate is kinda loose after just a few minute of use or even when I tilt the camera a bit. This really annoys me as I have to release the plate to tighten it every single time. Do you have any idea to fix that? Thank you!
Hi Lucas, great review! Why does this not have more views?! I'm deciding between this and the MonoCam. Do you have any recommendation on what to get? I will be using it with a 5D3 with batterygrip and a 24-70/2,8 IS mostly. Later with a mic on top. Thank you!
It depends a bit what you declare more important to you! :) The Monocam is easier to transport, I'd say a bit faster to setup... but not as good with heavy weight. Yet again, a 5D isn't thaaat heavy, and the newer Monocams with CF-pole and foot are quite fancy :)
Thumbs up, I have the po4 with a tokina 11 16mm and its pretry heavy,I get tire on my fore arm and back and iam looking to get a vest and arm soon as itts not very practical for me.how long can you film with yours?
Hi there, if there were local stores I can assure you it would cost twice as much! :( Try to write the seller a message, usually they are willing to ship to your location, too! :)
Hi Lucas ! I bought the Laing P-04 , I received it yesterday. It looks very good but the top plate has an up and down play , even if it is locked. The whole head assembly has a slight play. Can you tell me if you have this problem with your Laing ? Thank you very much. Also the carbon fiber looks very thin and I think it can brake if you lock the screw very tight.
Hm, i have a problem understanding what you mean with up/down play? :( Carbon can always break, even on a 1,5K Sachtler tripod, that's the problem with them in general! :( in germany, we say "nach fest kommt ab", which means that after something sits tight, it will be gone if you turn further. Just don't :)
hi, I don't know if you are still having the issue of "play in the head assembly," but the camera plate can be adjusted forward/backward as well as side to side and there are two separate locks for the plate. If you still have play I would use an allen wrench to tighten all the screws on the head assembly. The top of the carbon fiber pole where the assembly attaches has an thick inner metal ring to reinforce the carbon fiber. I won't say that you can't crack the pole by tightening it, but it's not just carbon fiber at the ends of the pole so it's not as fragile as you might think. hope that helps.
Hello, I have a question on shipping. How long did it take for you to receive the product. I'm going to visit family stateside and I don't want to order something and it not get there when I need it. What was your experience like? Thank you for your time.
Justin Arrington hey there, it really depends a lot on location and which shipping method you use. For example, I received from china within 2 days with express or sometimes 2months if not. My preferred method is Yanwen Express as it's relatively fast (1-2weeks) and moderately cheap. Of courseI can't tell for your location, only for mine :(
YO, great review, I may have a wedding to film 3 months from now, would you recommend this Laing p04 (will be my first time using a stabilizer) or would you recommend a different Stabilizer, in other words do you have a favorite right now?
I like this one a lot. But with Stabilizers especially, practice makes perfect. Don't expect that your first wedding will be super awesome, you need to train a lot with these :o
Hi what would you recommend a filmmaker to get, who owns a canon t3i and a BlackMagic Cinema Camera, out of - Kovacam - New monoCam CF Pro+ (Plus Edition), OR THE - Laing P-04S(P-4S), OR THE - Glidecam XR-2000, OR THE - Glidecam HD-2000 ???? In What order of good to bad would you put these?
Jay Cross Hi Jay, well it's hard to tell because I can't impossibly own all of those stabilizers to give you a proper opinion how to arrange these :) I'd head for the LAING most likely.
Hi there, sorry, I don't have recommendations regarding Rigs+Followfocus, as I build my Rig from parts rather then getting a "finished" solution. I made a Review on a Follow Focus though, could be ordered seperate, which is really good :) It's from Fotga
Hey just to say thank you. Your video helped me to decide to zero in on P04. I just received today and would like to add that they have modified the design by moving the leveler from the foot to the top part at the eye level. So it is even better now.:)
Lucas Pfaff ya. This one is called P-4s. I have another question for you. Which quick release system you use on P04S. I am looking to get one which I can interchangeably used between Laing P04s and Manfortto Monopod
good review. I bought a Laing P-04 a while ago and had some issues with the gimbal where it would pan and tilt badly on slow moving shots. After watching Nitsan Simantov's tutorial on replacing the lubricant of a glidecam I decided to try doing that on my P-04 and the stabilizer works so much better. Here is some footage that I shot after changing the lubricant in the bearing: Nature Walk (Laing P-04 Stabilizer/Sony FDR AX100) Just to be clear, I didn't add any software stabilizing. If anyone is interested I can create a detailed tutorial of how to disassemble the Laing P-04 gimbal and change the lubricant (at your own risk of course :)
Thanks for the feedback! So far I had no problems with my Gimbal, but I guess some people might have a use from such a Tutorial The Footage looks great!
Hi Lucas! I have bought Laing 4S but I am having hard time finding the just docking bracket for Laing, could you please tell me where I can find the docking bracket. Thanks!
great review! I'm here from your p-03 review - I have the 4s and it is great that they've moved the spirit level back up to eye level - the footage at the end was great and haha loved the Jason Bourne-esq-ness :) Thanks for the video :)
Hey There Lucas Pfaff! I Really enjoy your videos! Just a quick question, do you know a seller or store that sells and ships these within EUROPE? Because here in Portugal we have HUGE taxes for "things" costing 150€ and up! :) Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hello ! I own the Flycam C5 (aluminium) , but now I want to buy a new steadicam and I am thinking at P-04 Laing , Wieldy Iron and Flycam C5 (carbon fiber). Please help me with a decision. All the footage from youtube for P-04 is very shaky and I don't know what to do. Almost all Flycam footage is spectacular. I did not shoot too much with my flycam because aluminium is very , very heavy. I hope if I will buy the carbon version would be a huge difference.
This depends mostly on the operator. A good operator will shoot awesome stuff with cheap stabilizers, while the best stabilizer is useless in the hands of someone who isn't good at it/not trained. I like the simple and slick design of LAING, and also how great it is to adjust. AFAIK, the new Flycams also have usable quick-adjustments now, but the pole stills slides out of the stabilizer which is a no-go for me. The gimbals from LAING are great, and the featureset is rich. Look at the Steadycam-Demo with Arm+Vest; not really shaky there :)
Flycam made a huge step with the C5, but I still prefer the LAING. It's the little things, like better head-adjustments and the pole doesn't fall off when you want to make it longer (the C5 simply falls out, the LAING has a stopper)
Depends mostly on your skillset :) you can of course also you a more tele-like lens, it depends a bit on what kinda shots you want to achieve. For the "usual" Stabilizer work, a 24-35mm equiv (35mm photographic) would be a good starter, that would be around 8-12mm on a Blackmagic Pocket (Speedboosters or Lens Turbos are your friend here) Also, I wouldn't get too much into comparing the crop of a camera to 35mm photographic ones, I'd more compare it to S35 if at all (much better here: S16! :) )
I own both :) Actually, they have many similarities, but I like the LAING more. The foot can be adjusted less, but also that's a typical source of balancing errors, makes it a bit easier when you have not too much time.
Hey there, I didn't used the MonoCam CF Pro so far. Yet from my experience with the MonoCam, I'd say both stabilizers will work out with the 5D3 I fell like the LAING stabilizers are a bit better with the flying, but the MonoCam is more portable such, if that's more important to you. After all though, both stabilizers are great value.
Hi, by your review, I bought this stabilizer. Do you have any manual how to set to get best stabilzitaion? Do I need to buy next weights? etc... Thanks
Lucas Pfaff, Hello really enjoyed your review. very nice and informative. One quick question - Is there any way to easily fix my camera without removing the Manfrotto 410PL quick release directly to the cheese plate of Laing p-04 S stabilizer? ua-cam.com/video/7XaqZjJsYiM/v-deo.htmlm10s
+Diego Sartori good question! With the kit lens it could be indeed a bit too light. Generally, it still should work. I usually used a GH2 on these which is also quite light. Maybe you just have to add a tiny little weight on top :)
Thank you for getting back to me on this Lucas Pfaff, I will give it a month or so and see if anyone else tries this combination before I venture into it.
Would getting something like a "Manfrotto 3433PL 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate" help with my issue securing the D7100 on the Laing P-4S?
I put on a smaller lens (50" Prime) and now it's OK. I guess my wide angle 17-55" was too heavy,. Now I just gotta get it to stop wobbling. Do the weights at the bottom have to be perfectly even?
+Jeremy Foster they should be even, yes. Is it possible the lens was too big and touched the baseplate so it could get proper hold? The weight should not at all be an issue
+Lucas Pfaff I think I'm just over thinking everything. I put on a wide lens and I just need to remove some weight on the bottom. do you have any upcoming videos about stabilizer operation with shooting ?
definately look out for the total weight as I have no idea how much the C100 weights in total, but it carried my BMCC so it should do the trick :) yet don't forget to get lifiting a lot, that's a heavy load to take :)
Only for the heavy loads, as the monoCam does get problems with counterweight. For small setups (and with that I also mean a fullframe camera with a normal Lens), I'd prefer the latter tbh
"I road with my girlfriend into the woods" xD Anyway great awesome video I was really thinking on getting one and now I am indeed going to invest on one. Thanks Lucas!
Was meinst du mit geschickt anstellen?
Great video. Do you know the difference between the LAING P-4S vs P-04 ??
Interesting review but I found your footage was swaying, something i'd not be happy with. Has it improved?
the main reason is usually the operator, in this case me :) it also depends greatly on your setup of course. some lenses are more forgiving than others.

A most simple lighting stand :)
hi Lucas, I bought the latest version if this one P-04s, my problem is that the screw that attaches the camera and the plate is kinda loose after just a few minute of use or even when I tilt the camera a bit. The Footage looks great!
Hi, Lucas, how is the performance of Laing stablizer on windy conditions? its possible use, and manteing the performance?
Hi there, in windy conditions a proper balancing is essential! still, it will always, with any stabilizer, cause an extra challenge.
Hi Lucas! I have bought Laing 4S but I am having hard time finding the just docking bracket for Laing, could you please tell me where I can find the docking bracket. Thanks!
no idea, I only use a lighting stand :o

Hey There Lucas Pfaff!
I Really enjoy your videos!
Just a quick question, do you know a seller or store that sells and ships these within EUROPE?
Because here in Portugal we have HUGE taxes for "things" costing 150€ and up! :)
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Hi Lucas have you tried the steady cam with your BMCC. Cheers
I did! It checks out. The BMCC is a bit heavy so arm+vest become a necessity really quick, but it works as it should!
This is a great stabilizer! I love mine
Would this work with a panasonic g6? 14-43mm lens kit.
I would be using this with the with BMPCC (X 2.88 for 35mm equivalent). How wide a lens would I have to use to be able to get decent footage?
Depends mostly on your skillset :) you can of course also you a more tele-like lens, it depends a bit on what kinda shots you want to achieve.
For the "usual" Stabilizer work, a 24-35mm equiv (35mm photographic) would be a good starter, that would be around 8-12mm on a Blackmagic Pocket (Speedboosters or Lens Turbos are your friend here)
Also, I wouldn't get too much into comparing the crop of a camera to 35mm photographic ones, I'd more compare it to S35 if at all (much better here: S16! :) )
Thanks
I have a canon 60D, can I use the p-04s with my 60D?.. and whats the difference between p-04s and p-4s?, they both are the same?
Hi there, this will totally suit your 60D! :)
I have to admit I have no idea if there are differences between the two versions.
...just ordered one, and iam pretty exited to use it.....nice vid
kovacam k05 (Nitsan´s favourite) or Laing P04?
I own both :)
Actually, they have many similarities, but I like the LAING more. The foot can be adjusted less, but also that's a typical source of balancing errors, makes it a bit easier when you have not too much time.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Im going to take your advice and get the 4s, ill let you know how i get along
what's the difference between the p04s and the p4s?
Have you tried the MonoCam CF Pro? If so, do you like the Laing p-04 or MonoCam? Which is better for a 5d Mark 3? Thanks
Hey there,
I didn't used the MonoCam CF Pro so far. Yet from my experience with the MonoCam, I'd say both stabilizers will work out with the 5D3
I fell like the LAING stabilizers are a bit better with the flying, but the MonoCam is more portable such, if that's more important to you.
After all though, both stabilizers are great value.
Lucas Pfaff thanks for the quick reply.
hi how does Laing 04 compared with glidecam hd 4000 ?
Which one is better ?
Never used that one, sorry :(
Hi, by your review, I bought this stabilizer. Do you have any manual how to set to get best stabilzitaion? Do I need to buy next weights? etc... Thanks
Lukáš Drda The weights depend on the load you put on top, look into the description for a link to a great balancing video :)
Lucas Pfaff, Hello really enjoyed your review. very nice and informative. One quick question -
Is there any way to easily fix my camera without removing the Manfrotto 410PL quick release directly to the cheese plate of Laing p-04 S stabilizer?
ua-cam.com/video/7XaqZjJsYiM/v-deo.htmlm10s
Jai Raj you'd need something to attach the plate to, maybe manfrotto has a baseplate for this ?
Lucas Pfaff , in fact that is what am looking for....in fact the base plate is fixed on 498RC4 ball head....
Great review! Do you know where to buy this in Germany?
hi
Can you tell me where you buy the Laing in China please?
(the difference is maybe 10 kilos vs 15 kilos between the two 4-P models
thank you
There are links in the Description :)
Taobao.com
Would this work with a camera like the A6000/A6300 or is it too big (for that small a camera)?
+Diego Sartori good question! With the kit lens it could be indeed a bit too light. Generally, it still should work. I usually used a GH2 on these which is also quite light. Maybe you just have to add a tiny little weight on top :)
Thank you for getting back to me on this Lucas Pfaff, I will give it a month or so and see if anyone else tries this combination before I venture into it.
Thanks for the informative review!
Would getting something like a "Manfrotto 3433PL 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate" help with my issue securing the D7100 on the Laing P-4S?
that depends a bit why it isn't securing correctly. is the screw too long?
+Jeremy Foster not really, there are much better people on UA-cam who are better with that :) Nitsan is pretty good with that for example!
Thanks so much for replying!
great review left me with no questions ha
I'm planning on buying a Canon C100 MKii. Could this stabilizer carry it?
Would depend on the lens and other gear you plan to attach, but should be able to carry it
Awesome, thanks a lot for the quick reply man!
definately look out for the total weight as I have no idea how much the C100 weights in total, but it carried my BMCC so it should do the trick :) yet don't forget to get lifiting a lot, that's a heavy load to take :)
Do you prefer the Laing over the Monocam?
Only for the heavy loads, as the monoCam does get problems with counterweight. For small setups (and with that I also mean a fullframe camera with a normal Lens), I'd prefer the latter tbh
I am not sure, I like to get an glidecam für my nikon d5300. Should i get the Laing P-04S or the glidecam hd 2000 ? :(
Both will do the job just fine :)
"I road with my girlfriend into the woods" xD Anyway great awesome video I was really thinking on getting one and now I am indeed going to invest on one. Thanks Lucas!
Thank you. I just got p03
Thanks for the great review!!!
great thank you
all the best

can you use this for a gopro?
You'd have to add some weight on top so it works properly, I think there are better devices for a GoPro than this :/
will it work with a gopro?
I think a GoPro is waaaaaay to light for this; so you have to add weight to the top to use it properly. But in the end, it would work!
I probably should have finished the video before asking that question ha ha
2:36 Christopher Walken comes in to say ''Values'' (;
The Stabilizer is ok, but i hate it that you no longer can do upside down shots like you could with the 03 version...
Hm, the P-03 is somewhat the same in the base design. How was it achievable back then but not anymore, what changed?
*****
But it's too little adjustment in most setups for the handle; you'd need more to to it properly :(
Wo hast du deinen her?
FrozenSkiller
Hast beide gefragt? Sind zwei :)
Lucas Pfaff
I will upload a video tonight. I am sorry , but my English is somehow limited.
To bad there are no german links :/
Was meinst du mit geschickt anstellen?
die eMail-Adresse schicke ich Dir als PN! :)
Haha kommt mir bekannt vor :D
