I am so happy that the love of your life found you that great brush! The tank looks so much better! I felt so bad for you, I could hear it in your voice how upset you were. You did the right thing and you did it well!
You are truly inspiring. 95% of people would just give up and re-scape, but it is amazing how much passion you put into your work. This video has inspired me to not make any more excuses whenever I see an algae bloom in my tank.
I think you made the right choice removing the rocks and cleaning them manually. Just a FYI. Bleach works best in cold water. The chlorine is not effective in hot water. This is the reason why hot tubs use bromine instead of chlorine. Just a tip if you ever have to deal with this again. Might save you some scrubbing time. The tank looks absolutely amazing now. Keep up with the great videos and don't be shy to post anything that looks off. I am dealing with the same algae issues right now. This is how I found your channel.
I followed your Big Shallow story until today, that was a great dedication right there! I learnt this in a hard ways, that tanks with low depth-to-width ratio tend to be infested with algae way worse than their deeper counterparts. I'm not sure, but it seemed that light intensity-to-surface width ratio plays big role.
I’d have done what you did, take them out. I’d then have soaked them in a very strong solution of liquid carbon leaving them to soak for at least 24 hours, then scrubbed them with a brush back to new looking. Rinsed really well and put back again. Your tank is awesome, totally inspiring.
Wow! The rocks look amazing now after clearing the algae issue. A really good decision to take them out for cleaning the algae. These are the kind of things that proves that experience is a good teacher 😊👍🏻.
I think you taking out the big rocks based upon their condition was the best choice. They look wonderful. I was holding my breath as you lifted them in and out. I had visions of the tank breaking …. 😱 Have a nice weekend 🏄🏼♂️
I quite like it without the two rocks actually. Looks like a long field of sorts. Anyway I’m glad the tank is going well overall :) Thanks for the updates.
Great job on the rocks, best plan taking them out and scrubbing them clean and killing that algae. Personally I think you over did the trimming of the glossostigma, there's nearly none left.... great show keep it up. Thanks..
Because the tank is only 30cm high I want to keep the glosso carpet very thin, that's why I trimmed it back hard. It's been just over a week and it's already coming back really well 😊
Mark, great job removing, cleaning and putting back the rocks. Tank looks really awesome. A little naked without the plants 🪴, but looks fresh and clean.
You made the right decision...it takes some courage to do this...but you really did a great job.. Thanks again for the courage to go ahead cut all the plants 😂 it's the hardest part of aquascaping I think
You made the right decision. I would have done the exact same thing. Happens to all of us. After this point, the trick is to find the right balance and to keep up the maintenance before it ever gets like that again. Overall you did a great job.
Oh wow, good job cleaning those rocks! I am always so wary and anxious when using bleach on rocks, because I am afraid that they might be way more porous than I think and soak up bleach that I am then not able to clean/ flush out. But for you I am sure you did great on getting everything off. :) Looking forward to how the tank will look like once it’s grown all back!
Nice choices; removing the rocks to clean , use of plant types and fish. I wish I could have your cuttings, zosterfolia is not easy to find here. Glosso is easier to find growing in the wild. Happy it all worked out well for you, your patience was rewarded ,your persistence was a worth while investment.
I am from romania( masterline is a romanian producer)..and i doze masterline in aquarium also....i got the masterline all in one golden....the plants are insane now ...very good fertiliser
Bonsoir mark. Toujours intéressante t'es vidéos. En plus s j'ai le même problème que toi sur le fait de retiré les pierres pour les nettoyer maintenant je sais quoi faire. Merci et continue à nous faire partager notre même passion.
Made me nervous watching all that hardscape jump out and in again. I am building now but with a lot of gluing to stabilize cantilevered and leaning rocks. I see now that it means I have sacrificed the option of pulling the rocks to clean them. But you used it well. Nice save.
Singing Post Malone while doing some maintenance! That’s my kind of maintenance session lol I would’ve done the same thing and took the rocks out that algae was intense 😳 it’s nice to see some color back on those big beautiful rocks
In my tanks it's the hair algae: Same requirements as regular plants, it just won't disappear from a wood. Sometimes a toothbrush isn't enough, so I need to take that piece out and clean it with a large brush one would use to scrub (tiled) floors or old pots. It should be safe to bleach even those. Diluted bleach in a bowl can be used to disinfect plants (kill unwanted snails). It's often used on Anubias leaves I heard. So it would be safe to use that on rocks, even without boiling. I'd be more afraid to pour boiling water on rocks. They could crack.
Hey, qq, to drain, do you have a pump that's sucking the water out to the bathroom? As I'm still doing gravity draining either with manual sytem or straight manual suction
I find with your videos I'm always asking a question in my head and then you answer it immediately. It really flows and you leave nothing important out
Yes it’s what I would’ve done!! Way too much algae on it! Clean the rocks and back in even if looks different it won’t look bad! You’ll have beautiful plants growing up and around them and it’ll look great!!! 👍🏻
I would have done the same thing, with one exception. I wouldn't have used the Steel rush and manually cleaned the rocks. I would have used my Dremel with the rotating Steel brush that goes with the Dremel. Less time consuming.
I’m not sure about you but I have pretty easy access to a power washer. Mine is pretty high powered and super heated but I’m sure a regular power washer would have cleaned those rocks up in seconds.
Awesome video as always. I'm currently battling with hair algae and just finished watching your algae guide video. Very useful. Looking forward to your next video dude. P.S: my cat drinks the umami fish poop water everyday now. I wonder if he has hair algae in him too 🤨?
You need to completely switch to RODI water remineralised for at least a few months. Then mix tap and RODI for few more months. This will solve many problems that freshwater aquarists encounter until the tank establishes
Hill Stream Loach! Yeah you did the right thing. I would have been more lazy and put them in a bucket with a couple cap fulls of bleach and let them sit a few days. Then put them out in the sun a few days and then brushed off any lingering algae.
Introduce the love of your life someday to us and yes please do a question and answer session on UA-cam we are eagerly waiting to know more about you and how did you came this far ⚡ Much love to you man stay blessed ❤🍾
i would have used bio-exit green, maybe twice or if that did not work i would use the somewhat ''extreme'' method Colombo Algisin, it will work but its only advised using it two times a year
I did the same to my 140L tank but I destroyed it after I saw how clean the big rocks became and until now I did not decide what I’ll do, but I think I will re-scape it from scratch again soon. All that for the honor of the algae😅
Would have done the same. Only difference I would have taken the rocks outside my house and use my Kärcher for hot water pressure them. Haha. Regards from Germany Edit: you can add chemicals or other stuff to the water pressure machine. Like the stuff you have used. So I guess there's no need for the toothbrush as it takes a lot of time.
Do you doze the same amount of fertilizer after you did such a massive trimming session? Btw huge fan of your work and your tanks look amazing🤩keep on with the good work and pleasing us with such quality content👍🏼
Amazing mate.Looks completely different from even just a couple weeks ago for some reason, must be the new ferts 👌🏼 love it though That’s going to grow back next level 🙌🏼🌱
I think if you painted one rock at a time to limit the impact on the water. Slower to fix it up but less drastic. I wrote this before I saw your results. I was scared it mess it up bad removing the rocks.
I would have used a toothbrush and brushed off what I could in the tank. Then do a big water change. Then repeat that process slowly for the next few weeks.
You nearly gave me a heart attack - the danger to fish and shrimps of contemplating chemical use with rocks in situ and with so little water left in the tank. I don't use rocks, a true Dutch tank needs trimmed at least weekly but with a tank of plants and fish and maybe a little wood, algae control is normally not so intrusive jungle/river style, anyway all is well in the end. Good luck, take care.
Hey there, I am 13 years old and from Bangladesh. I am planning on setting up a dutch style planted tank. I have a few tank sizes in mind all of which are bigger than 24 inches or 60 centimeters. The tank sizes are: a) 24X18X18 b) 30X18X18 c) 36X18X18 d) 36X24X24 So, from these sizes, can you please tell me which one would be the best size for a dutch style tank for me. I already have a tank that is 24X12X12 so I am not interested in that size. Please let me know what size would be the best for me. Also, the temperatures get high in Bangladesh during summer, so I also need to keep that in mind and use fans along the length of the tank to keep it cool. I am trying to make a cooling fan that will automatically turn on and off when the temperature is too high or too low. It will use Arduino. But please let me know. Please reply. Please. I am a big fan.
I am not an expert with dutch style aquariums but I do know one thing that they are pretty densely planted and that means that the larger the tank you get the more plants you beed to purchase and I think. AND even if its not a dutch style the general rule is to plant as densely as possible. So maybe go with a smaller size if getting more plants is more expensive.
I would have manually removed algae while the rocks where in the aquarium. Then I would have treated the algae. Once black brush is dead Amanos will eat the dead algae.

I had a good chuckle with the "wasted" bit. I forgot what those two big rocks looked like. Tank looks amazing!
Hello M J. In my opinion you did the right thing. For me, there would be no other way to clean the stones. Congratulations.

i am the worst at trimming plants and my tanks always look like a jungle. loving the scape and rocks
The big shallow looks good pretty much no matter what. Love it so much Mark, such a beautiful tank!!!
Pensaba que no las pondrías de nuevo y me puse triste.... Pero al fin las volví a ver en tu tanque! Precioso!
Well done! You made the right decision and the tank looks great again. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad parts of this great hobby.

I would have put a few dozen olive nerite snails in to clean up the rocks, you can always remove them when they finish.

I LOVE your big shallow. Thank you for sharing. May I know the stand height of the big shallow?
I would have done the same thing, took the rocks out.
80cm high! 😊
Bleach water mix in bucket over night....clean as a whistle. Just rinse well.
Awesome tank
Do You conserve your trimming? Can You make someday a tutorial to the basics to start an emerged culture?
Does the pump nozzle on the liquid fertilizer bottles get crusty and stop working
not yet!

Can try using APT Fix it for algae
Do you made a video about diy fertilizers?
Tbh i would just Buy a small Group of 3-4 Crossocheilus reticulatus and let them clean the Stuff i had same issue and they did a great Job :)

Magnificent
I would take the rocks out then clean and put back in a few days
Maby use a water pressure machine for those rocks?
Yeah that would have been very helpful
Could you tell me what tank the big shallow is please and what stand you are using for it? tia
Hey! it's a WIO 120F and the stand is a Juwel Rio 350 stand
@@MJAquascaping thanks 👍 just want to say it looks amazing mate carry on the great work.

Haven't had the chance to hook up the new fertilizers just yet. But I'm still using the INTAQO for the light and CO2

Imo trimming the plants so drastically was unnecessary at this point. Especially the carpet plant could grow further imo.
Yeah agree with that one, the glosso is nearly killed off again, back to square one whilst we wait a month and a half or so....
