Wow, that's one beautiful tank. Iwagumi is my favorite style, especially the tanks by Takashi Amano. There's perfection in simplicity. Also, I wish shallow tanks would get more love. They are simply sleek and stunning. Congrats on becoming a monk!

It's a lovely tank, glad you didn't give up. Can you get flagfish in The Netherlands? They are native to Florida and will eat blackbeard algae. I'd have research again, but I believe there is at least one kind of snail that will eat it as well.
As for the CPDs, make sure they are getting enough O2 since your CO2 is pretty high. Although it sounds like some sort of wasting disease that is not impacting the cories.

MJ: your persistence will pay off in the end. Don’t give up on the big shallow. Your vids have taught me more than you know. Your goal of the channel helping people I believe has made it’s mark many times over. We all learn more each day. You are an inspiration to many. Road blocks happen. Hang in there. I look forward to your posts. They have given me many ideas for my tanks. All the best to you from your buddy in San Diego, Tom 🏄🏼‍♂️

Great to see you coming out the other side of the issues, and it's refreshing to see someone else having a tank that isn't perfect - we've all been there (and will all go through it again). It's what makes the moments of balance so rewarding!
I had an issue with BBA in my nano, it spread throughout the tank and I couldn't get on top off it. In the end dosing the tank with Flourish Excel killed it all within days (and the Marino moss ball I didn't think to take out). It might be a good option to consider

Hi, MJ. Thanks for posting your experiences with the problems you faced with your new aquarium. Every hobbyist, even the most experienced, go through these situations. But, you are doing very well.
And as for your fish, with their spine bent and dying, maybe it could be due to the Bacteria. Disease - Tuberculosis:
    - Apathy, Emaciation, Retracted Belly, Curvature of the Spine, Loss of Color,
    - Gravity - Fatal.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the honesty! I’m sure the challenge of changing to a bigger tank has been compounded by the holidays.
It’s worth considering adding some specialised livestock to combat the BBA; I had small amounts of hair algae that I couldn’t seem to rid myself of with tweaking setup or dosing Excel so I added two SAEs - very active fish, hair algae all gone.

Am keen to see how you revive this aquarium without the nuke methods … and watching it recover back to a perfect balance. I have a large aquarium with lush black beard algae on my wood but it’s ‘contained’ and I want to start tweaking conditions so it disappears on its own good time due to perfect conditions. CO2 and light balance seem to be the trick … loving your insights and experience. Love to see the journey !

That light definitely is very powerful. Keeping that in mind and that plants need more nutrients the more light you put on them I tend to reduce my light intensity before I leave and ask a friend to once a week add a precise volume of an all in one fertilizer with a seringe.

maybe try spraying the rocks with seachem excel, I tried it on some BBA on wood and it helps. It might not be as effective as H2O2 but it is way less damaging to your plants/lifestock :)

Love the big shallow now brother. Looks top quality 👌🏼.
I’ve got glosso in my tank in my last Re-scape video, it’s grown totally different than yours has.
I’m thinking it may be something to do with the Way We planted differently and possibly something to do with the Co2.
Mine didn’t see any Co2 for about 6 months. I had 2 pots initially, only ripped them up into quarters, and planted them very close together so the way it’s grown out is very thick. Took along time of course, and I’d say I still have about 1/4 of the tank to cover. But I’ve only just let the rest of the carpet start taking over, as I’ve removed some hard scape in the vid, and added the new C02 rig.

My experience with gloso has been that it has a certain amount of light it wants and then the more you add just complicates everything. I would describe my experience as being most successful with it under "medium" level lighting of about 1-0.5w/USG. When I've raised the light above those levels my scapes just turned into algae farms.

Hey man. What a struggle! Yeah BBA is one of the worst algae to get rid of. You're right. In my experience I think tanks with soft water are doing better. Recently I tested the water parameters in one of my nanos, and I figured it's quite low. PH 6.4~6.6 KH 3 GH 0. Fish and plants are doing very well. Just a small issue with BBA indeed, but I add liquid carbon daily in direct injection and it works. Maybe you should try this and a iron toothbrush as well.

  • @marcwalker2300
    @marcwalker2300 2 роки тому

I think an army of amano shrimp will help with the BBA no end I had a BBA issue last year and added amano's and the they soon made short work of it , my BBA was Co2 related and having now dialed in the Co2 I don't have the problem any more.
Well done for the perseverance - there is light at the end of the tunnel stick with it and you will get there 👍

I'm glad you taught us here how to not give up...
A few things I would have done in case this would have happened to me,
    1. For the rocks I would have picked up a metal brush and scrubbed every bit of algae from them, just holding it into stable position and scrub things off. If you don't like the algae parts going into water, you may ask someone to take a outlet hose and suck the scrubbings immediately...and other hose would pump fresh water in. Basically a running water change.
    2. Nuke them with seachem excel...not directly onto rocks/leaves but by dosing a little extra in water.
    3. For the fishes getting skinny, it could be due to internal parasites. When you bring in new fish, treat the whole tank with API general cure or fritz Paraclease/ similar composition.
It is a must. 100% of the fishes have internal parasites in them. Some survive and others perish away slowly. Just acclimatization is not enough.
If you have already done that, then probably you got a bad batch of fishes...or some other disease...
PS : you did a tremendously good job with the scape and plant selection. I would love it if you post more updates of this one. It looks amazing. Keep up the great work 👍👍🙏❤️

I second that. Dropping my KH from 7 to 1 significantly reduced bba in my tanks without changing any other parameter. Even getting it from 10 to a more acceptable level like 5 helps many plants a lot. But the sweet spot for many plants is around 2 KH or less. Higher Waterhardness makes it morr difficult for plants to take up nutrients (slower) but algae doesn't care.
Calcium should be at 20 ppm and Mg at 10 ppm (roughly). Which results in a GH of 6 then Plants have all they need without strugling

I had BBA and it started due to lack of CO2. Once it took hold, it took quite a while to stop propagating. I would even say that the existing algae did not simply die off - I had to remove it. That includes bathing the hardscape in bleach. I think you overdid it with light in the first place. Glossostigma does fine under medium light (I have 110Watts in 600l tank -> 50umol PAR ). And it would be ok with only 6 hour photoperiod per day. Good luck!

Wow, you learned exactly the same thing that I did. 👍
I have also everything tip top. CO2 allot of LED lightning daily dosage pump of fertilizer plus fertilizer in the substrate and so on.💪
Most of my plants just slowly stopped to grow.. ..until i looked at the water parameters.🤔
Same here KH at ~10 dH and higher.
But I went another route and cut the KH by using RO water. Aiming for around 7 and that is still rather high but it is the lowest my cichlids like..
But plant growth is back on track and growth is great with 7 dH of KH.
Probably it could be even better with lower KH but I will never know. 😅
Anyway I am super glad that i found the issue of almost no growth and I now understand why I consider plants as hard to get healthy growth on them when fighting against this invisible opponent. 😢
And why others might not understand: "what the problem is when it is just to plant them and they will grow automatically." When they have low KH where they live..🚣
It is crazy that only one little thing can be off and it has that BIG of an impact! Especially when everything else is optimal..🤔
Good that you did not give up and I understand your struggles when I have went through the same nightmare.. And I had even easy plants in my tank! 😤
Anyway consensus is if your KH is to high it doesn't matter if you have the correct lining, substrate, CO2, fertilizers and so on. KH will have the upper hand and make you fail in the long run if not corrected!🤔💧💦🎁

The algae problem(s) might be due to the lack of water circulation in some area of your tank. You might need a powerhead at the ithe end or a second filter for instance.
As for the danios, it might come down to the lack of calcium in your water due to the Kh -.

I spent 2 weeks, 4 days of full weekends to deal with the black algae issue. I brushed ornaments, dipped plants in hydrogen peroxide (and killed my plants....). Now there are tiny black beard algae and I plan to floss the tank water to get rid of them. My tanks are finally under good control.
One big lesson: not the light, the fish food! No overfeeding. And don't be lazy! Replace your filter media in time!

Hey Bro “ try to put in the long nose red shrimp !! It definitely help you to settle down the BBA...Well you can try to remove the co2 regulator and let the co2 run for 24/7 “ that’s the only way to stabilise your PH & CO2 level “ probably will solve your algae’s problem...

Hi! I never tried it by myself but I found sth maybe worth to try. It's called Easy Life Carbon. On the other hand, I had brush algae also in my old aquarium and after a while there where all gone. Or you give a try with floating plants.

Hi, what kind of automatic fertilizer dosing system are you using?
Please try to continue finding the rootcause for the problem. This is what all the followers are looking for :-)

Get some red lizard cats (WAY smaller than most farlowellas), Hillstream loaches and amanos. The fish actually do a damn good job. Red Lizards clean crevasses and surfaces, and harsh growing BBA and brown algae too... Hillstreams vacuum new growth like there is no tomorrow. For that tank... Maybe 6 red lizards and 8 hillstreams. Get only tank bread hill streams otherwise they will just hide... The amano aren't bad, but they don't do as much as the fish

Maybe it is worth to buy a Reverse Osmosis system. You can find it as low as 60€. But it might be cheaper than KH- solution, over time; and it also lowers the GH what should be good. On the other hand, you might need to add some salts to the RO water to remineralize it or mix it with tap water to achieve your desired KH/GH values.
What I am trying to say is: if you didn't consider this option, make the numbers and it might be worth it.
I love your tank and your videos. Cheers!!

I have a suggestion for you. It is something I tried myself, and a friend of mine. For the BBA, don't use H2O2 on the rocks, instead use KH Minus from MasterLine. Shut off the filter, in a syringe, draw KH Minus and position it over the BBA on the rocks. Very important...don't push on the syringe, let the solution come out by it self. It is more dense than water and you can even see it. Do this only respecting your normal dose of KH Minus. Don't do it on plants. Rocks and wood are ok. The result will surprise you. BBA turns instantly to red. Warning...don't overdose, don't linger too much on the same spot. Test on a small rock first. Hope I hear that it helped you too. By the way, this is not a method endorsed by MasterLine, it's something I used myself out of desperation 😄

    Looks great in the end!!
I had a big group of Tinwini Danios in my 90p tank as well, and the exact same thing has been happening to them as you describe, while all other fish and shrimps are perfectly fine..
What intensity do you use on the skylight now? And what schedule?

Hey, random but the same thing has been happening to my group of tinwini danios… I wasn’t sure if it was fish TB or not, did any of your other fish end up getting sick? Seems like it may just be an issue with danios as they reach old age since MJ and others in the comments have had the same issue, mine are around 1.5years old

@@jeremylan4519 nope the other fish and shrimp remained fine. A couple of months later it also happened to some appistogrammas i got. Maybe it could also be the hardness of the water.

I setup my first scape a f ew months ago, did loads of research and thought I was setting myself up for success. But it's been a tough learning experience and I've had algae issues, and it's painful as a perfectionist, but I think if you're in this hobby you can't view it in black or white terms like success or failure. You have to view it as either you succeed or you learn.

Glad you set up your first scape. I had the same issue with my first planted tank. For me I learned the more I did to the tank the worse it got. But I have a lot of nutrients in my tap water naturally. So I barely use liquid fertilizer. Keep going you'll find that balance, but you'll always have a little algae. It's natural.

Hey! Fantastic video. I want to ask about the cryptocoryne brown you have in the tank. How old is it? I have the wendtii brown and it looks exactly same size, while I was expecting it will be much more larger plant after maturity. It's been more than 3 months the size looks not so different that what's there in your tank. Is this a small variety?

You can use 3% H2O2 solution this won't harm other plants that much, but kills bba and cyanos easily.
Take a paintbrush and apply the solution directly to the Stones when they are out of the water during a waterchange.
You can use up to 50 ml 3% H2O2 per day in this tank without harming anything else.
For the parts which are submerged permanently, you can use a syringe and spray it with the solution while your filter is of.
At the next day the bba should turn pink/grey and will be eaten slowly by shrimps. Just repeat the process till all spots are treated.
Watch you NO2 levels since many plants are dying at the same time.
Good Luck and much fun with your tank!

Dont give up bro, I think it would be better to brush those rocks while you do the water change and not spray them with hydrogen peroxide or something like that. Cheers🙂

At this point you’re best choice is peroxide. Moving those big rocks is a bad idea. No offense. I just put up a big 55 gallon tank it’s cycling now. Good luck friend.
