I had a friend in the mid 90’s who was a exotic car mechanic. At the time he had around 300k worth of tools. Mac made him a one off custom toolbox that was 18 feet long. He had so many special tools just for doing very specific jobs on these cars.
I love seeing non aircraft mechanics utilizing tool grid systems. Really helps. In the aircraft industry there is a process called tool control and it is taken very seriously. Every tool has to be accounted for at all times.
If you'd know the amount of forgotten tools I've found in cars. And not only small sockets and stuff...I've found a foot long 21mm wrench under an BMW intake once. These grids ard great. I use foam inlays and the big disadvantage is the addition of new stuff or if the manufacturer changes something it doesn't fit anymore...
@xcofcd Same. I do roadside assistance for AAA and I am always finding tools under people's hoods. I ask them who was the last person to go under their hood, and then let them know to being it back when they can. I know the pain of losing tools.
Definitely not flat rate. This was alway my dream to work on super cars and over the years the dealership grind pushed me to hate working on cars. this guy has got it going on.
Really enjoyed the explanations on why Brett used some specific tools versus what might be the standard tool. Very pleasant and engaging mechanic. I can see why millionaires are comfortable having him repair and maintain their vehicles. Great toolbox tour! Thanks for sharing.
I like how this guy is so commited to his kermit green so he cant loose things in engine bays, really smart, finding that toolbox in the bay when the lights go off would be tough.
The truth is chrome tools are just as easy to find in engine bays as well and they have the advantage of the thinner handles for when you’re working in tight engine compartments. I imagine a mid engine car like Mclaren would have pretty tight engine compartments. I like the feel of those colored, comfort handle tools but as far as ratchets are concerned, I prefer the functionality of regular chrome handles. On my 24” long, 1/2” drive ratchet that is unlikely to be used in tight areas, I did buy that that one with a comfort handle. Orange is my color choice for handles.
When I was a mechanic most of the other mechanics would make fun of me because I kept my area clean and organized. Usually when I started working at a new shop I’d spend a couple of days cleaning my stall and adding lights. Made a lot more money than the other mechanics who spent their time looking for their own tools
I've seen a lot of tool box videos but the way this guy's is organized and the color matching makes this my favorite. If I was this guy I would never get any work done, I'd just be looking at my tools. I probably wouldn't want to get them dirty either.
Great tour!! I appreciate how you appear interested in every type of tool. You always allow the interviewee to explain and share their opinions on their setup, versus overstepping them as they perform the walk-thru.
This dudes collection is my goals. Black and green everything. Honestly, I love working in this field but working at the everyday car dealership like Chevrolet/Cadillac, there is just so many customers that come through our dealership it’s never a quiet day. I usually touch about 12-14 average a day. If I didn’t have to touch so many cars I would probably enjoy my job more but for now I just gotta deal with it. I’m hoping to sometime join these higher end shops because I think that I would be a better fit for these higher end cars because I’m more detail orientated, like taking my time and doing the job right. But always being hounded to go quick, you can never get quick and 100% accuracy both at the same time. Honestly, I would LOVE to work for Mclaren or Lamborghini, mainly Mclaren, I need to make me some friends who work at Mclaren dealerships maybe they can help me out and give me some advice to guide me on the path I need to be. I hate having a dirty work bay or lift, like out of the 4 of us in just our building (we have 1 giant shop and 1 little shop, I’m in the little shop) I sweep, mop, blow out my bay floor, lift, behind/under my tool box. I clean the tire machine and tire balancer area, (because no one else fucking does it and they just throw the trash and old weights on the floor or just deliberately miss the trash bucket and don’t pick it up, etc.) but I don’t touch or even try to clean the other techs on either side of me because they don’t clean up after themselves so why would I? But you can see which bay is mine, all the green stuff (black tool box, green 5 drawer tool cart, green Jack, green Jack stands) EVERYTHING has a spot I’m talking about tools, all of my tools, sockets, extensions, wrenches, ratchets, etc….. have their spot, and they MUST go back in those spots or I go insane. Im so OCD about things going back where they were or belong, even my jack, stands, mighty vac, oil drain etc. have specific spots, and when someone else uses my stuff and doesn’t put it back where it belongs or just leaves it in their own bay and doesn’t return it, I get super aggravated, anytime I use someone else’s tool because mine broke or lost I put it back exactly where it was or grabbed from OR I will set it on their toolbox and tell them "hey, I don’t know where it goes so I put it on top of your toolbox so you can put it back in the same spot." They will usually tell me to just throw it in a drawer and I just say "nah, I’ll let you do it, I’m not like that." Lmao.
If you like this type of work then look into getting your A&P. Working on airplanes is alot cleaner and easier. Pays more too. Just gotta get certified is all
These are not cars though like how we the mass market have cars. Its likely most of them are company owned and are actually leased. The person then gets to drive them while employed there. Other cars that are daily driven will be in the minority as even rich know the value of money. There will be the super low mileage mclarens purchased as investments.
Wish more people and techs were like this guy. They have pride in what they are doing even if its just a "normal" car No one takes care of anything anymore. These cars are well cared for and respected, I treat my cars like a super car and they last.

Just recently came across your channel and I am loving it. My grandfather was a master diesel tech for Penskee back in the 70s and I was recently given a lot of his tools that m father had Just a first-time homeowner with a small 5-drawer cart from HF but these are not only giving me ideas for how I want to slowly expand for home DIY and being a shade tree YT mechanic. But they also let me feel a little closer to my grandfather. Even when he couldn't walk out to his carport anymore he still knew the EXACT drawer and spot a certain tool was in when letting me use them. Keep up the good work my man.
I’m glad you enjoy the channel Adam. It really is something else to have the tools that someone once used day in and day out to make a living from. All the hours that those tools were used really hits home the sentimental value. Thanks for watching!
I truly appreciate this mans organization. I have every tool cleaned, organized and in its proper place. Brother you are going to need a full width drawer for your pliers.
It's refreshing to see a mechanic at the, at least in my opinion, top of the mechanic food chain using a mix of tools and not a $200,000 setup straight from the Snap On truck. A lot of guys think to be a master mechanic you need to have all the expensive tools, and he's a good example that you need them where you need them, but most tools you don't need it. Makes me feel good about my mix of Tekton, Gearwrench, Icon, Irwin, Channelock, Knipex, and so on.
I just created me a snack drawer to all my likings and when the other techs found out about it… down hill from there i let it go bc people would beg or ask daily

Cool to see even the best rock some harbor freight stuff. I'm just starting out as a lube/general service tech and harbor freight tools have gotten me going and are just a plain good deal.
For infilling your tools with paint, I find that taking a paint marker and paint your tool and then take the finest steel wool and that makes only the paint in the indents stay on the tool
Much respect for this guy. He treats customers’ cars like they are his own. Sadly, that’s hard to find these days. Which Mclaren dealer is he at for future reference?
I colorfill my tools by crudely filling them with a paint marker and then wiping them down lightly. It takes off all the excess paint and leaves the low spots colored and takes 10 seconds, not to mention that it looks better. Filling them with a brush is insane. Seems like a cool guy with cool tools, though.
Like most manufacturers the mclaren specialty tools are provided by the dealership. We have a whole room that's dedicated to mclaren/Koenigsegg specialty tools
Dealers are required by most manufacturers to have brand specific tools for the technicians to repair their vehicles. I worked at a Ford dealership with about 60 techs and although the dealer had all the special tools we needed, many techs bought their own to have. The time wasted stopping work to go check out a tool, or more commonly, wait for the tech who is using it to finish with it, it just made sense for us to buy the tool for our own use.
I like the paint on the ratchets. i did the same with my sets as a way to color code by drive size. Kinda goofy i know but it makes my life easier LOL and looks kinda cool. I got the idea from some Japanese Tool guys i follow on IG. i want the gold T70 socket as bench candy!!
Man this guy keeps his stuff so clean he has at least 3 drawers full of stuff to clean the cars he’s working on. Incredible attention to detail.
Yeah it's really something to aspire to.
He really has to keep them clean though so he doesn't stain any of the expensive cars he works on.

I unfortunately don’t divulge the location of any of the toolboxes I feature on this channel. It’s up to them they’d like to chime in 👍
There was a AZ dealer plate in the top of his second box. I’m 99% sure he is in Scottsdale.
If you ever find yourself in the Pacific Northwest, specifically the Tacoma area, I’ve got a four boxes loaded down that might make a good video.
If you can, send me a message on instagram @toolboxtours. I’d love to see what you’ve got!
Very nice setup !
I thought so too!
I'm happy to see a McLaren tech using harbor freight carts
Does mclaren provide them with those mclaren specific tools? Or they gotta buy um?
Good question! We’ll have to see if the owner chimes in on that one ☝️
These tours have me convinced to get a real box. My current box has no space and was just basic.
Just be careful. The addiction is real!
"They don't make green engine stuff" me, Diesel tech, at a Volvo dealership, looking at Volvo's green engines 👀😂
😂😂😂
I like the paint on the ratchets. i did the same with my sets as a way to color code by drive size. Kinda goofy i know but it makes my life easier LOL and looks kinda cool. I got the idea from some Japanese Tool guys i follow on IG. i want the gold T70 socket as bench candy!!
they have those new snap on needle nose in a smaller size now. waiting for the greens
