Greetings! Great video! I like the Mercury after seeing this. I am a part-time gunsmith and machinist who just recently started screwing with Nerf guns after 20-something year hiatus. My theory about what's potentially going on with the Jupiter being less capable than the Merc is as follows: Based on the holding positions of both guns when cocked and also due to their lengths, there are much different moments of force leverage applied across the gun when being cocked. While I can't see how everything inside is exactly supported and mounted together, I can see some of it to take an educated guess. Since the length of the priming mechanism is much longer on Jup, the bolt handle where you transfer your kinetic energy into potential energy stored in the spring is further away from the spring, and the energy must take a longer path to get to the spring. The increased offset previously mentioned means there are additional "energy absorbers" down the path of energy input. These come in result of wiggling, lightweight plastic parts that flex. I'll cut to the chase; since the pistol is short and stout, it likely has a much increased rigidity and reduced flex of parts between bolt handle and spring. The rifle however does not have nearly the same rigidity, so angular movements may put parts further out of alignment due to the combined flex over more plastic parts which are longer. This would also explain why you felt the bolt smoothness to prime went away and got sticky w/ K26. It would likely be possible to cure the problem by using an aluminum brace inside the gun, attached at the right supporting points, that acts as a chassis rail for the gun. Then drill out a couple holes and press fit nylon bushings that are already drilled or bored close to the part diameter going through them. Even if the only bushings used are to make a bolt support, that would help the feel a bit so long as the bushing(s) can't flex in the part holding them. Nerf needs to get into 2019 with a new molding and material process, because their design strength and feel is far too inefficient by comparison to other products. If you look at something like Ego electric 56v products at T.H.Depot, they have very nice switches, a ton of strength in the plastic casting designs (not to mention less but larger screws in most places), and you are actually getting 14 lithium 18650 cells in series, inside of their pack, brushless motors, vibration dampeners at mount points, etc the list goes on. All I am trying to say is, Ego lawn care stuff as well as many other tools use up to date plastic mfg techniques that are strong with almost no flex, and plenty of other heavier duty pieces of hardware, and give you it all in something like a weed whacker, which can be cheaper or close to the same price as the most expensive Nerf guns, while selling far less of them than Nerf! Nerf must make a killing off of the mfg because the finish, part alignment, and rigidity is basically the same as it was >25 years ago. That's starting to rub me the wrong way having to fix what they make.
I like the format of the new k26 vids. Blaster synopsis, chrono, range time, install, repeat, conclusion. At the price of longer vids its more informative for those debating the upgrade

Just picked up the Jupiter. Only saw it in stores once and didnt have the cash. Got it with target no bi pod , 60 cdn . seeing how much it is on ebay im happy
So what was mentioned to give the Nerf jupiter a top prime is not the only possible alternate prime. I think putting a larger yoke around the back of the blaster for a pullback prime like a kronos that has a tpull.
I really wish that someone would start selling aftermarket 3d printed hop up components. Something that would have a nub that contacts the ball on two points or on a concave surface would be good. Pie in the sky wish would be a barrel extension with an adjustable hop up, where you could move the concave surface left and right, up and down, and be able to rotate. Similar an Apex barrel tip on a paintball gun. But that would be tough, since rival doesn't have barrel tips that accept any attachments.
If we took a bit of inspiration from airsoft we could probably have someone with good 3D modelling knowledge knock up a rival version of the PDI VSR hopup; as with almost all airsoft hopups it is adjustable up and down but it also has two independent grub screws on the top left and top right of the unit to allow for adjustment in those directions. Would also be interesting to see someone experiment with the LRB (Long Range Barrel, basically a barrel that curves down slightly towards the end) concept in nerf or even the r-hop idea which is just a longer contact area.
I lowkey bought the Mercury for the target. And I'll definitely be getting the Jupiter for the target (it dings!), but having a proper bolt action rifle would be cool as well. It would also make for a great Widowmaker cosplay piece, for those inclined.
I like that priming handle because I had a stroke and its easier to pull it with my stroke hand 'cause I don't have to compress it like I would with a Chronos.
The mention of experimenting with the hop-up tab intrigues me. I've been wondering what messing with that might do. If I recall, the Hades sometimes has a bit of an accuracy issue because of it. EDIT: Also why does the pistol have an ambidextrous priming bar, but not the bolt action Jupiter?

Would it be possible to use heavier rounds to increase the accuracy and range of the Mercury? I know that in Airsoft, heavier rounds increase accuracy and stability in flight even with the hopup. Maybe because the hopup is adjustable in Airsoft guns and not here. Just thought I would throw it out there

The priming handle does make some sense because you don't need quite as much grip strength or large hands just to pull the spring back. Sure, the torquing from the side pull would be bothersome, but it worked fine in the Helios... Anyway, you yourself mentioned a rear-pull hook (such as is already available for Kronos), and I think that would be ideal.
To solve the priming problem with the pistol, you could do a similar mod to what you did to the Kronos. It might even be a stronger mech, assuming you used a threaded metal rod on both sides secured to the strip of metal with nuts and washers.
I've seen a mod where people fill the rival rounds with material of various types and the added weight would help with accuracy. However modifying the rival balls is only recommended for modified guns.
id love to see like a splash kinda blaster, like a little thing filled with the circle ammo and has a few triggers here and there which launches them out
Hey captain Xavier could u do an experimental video on rival Hop-Ups? Because I’m trying to make a precise Long range Rival gun. I also heard of an S hop up on Airsoft that makes the BBs spin at longer ranges.
I haven't played around with Rival much but would attaching a longer barrel after removing the hop-up tab improve the accuracy, at least at short range? And would adding a hop-up tab on the end of the extended barrel negate any accuracy boost?
Heres a quick question! Do you think you could mod the Mercury to be pump action? A little pump action sidearm would be awesome. Id imagine it taking a rail on the bottom of the gun that the slide would ride along, with arms going from the pump to the port for the current priming handle, not unlike a longshot pump action mod. Perhaps you could use the pump from a rough cut or something? That seems large enough and of the correct form factor to work. Anyway, great vid as always, keep up the good work!

There is a rubber tab in the barrel of these blasters that imparts back spin on the balls as they leave the barrel. This results in what is called the Magnus effect which causes the ball to actually fight gravity and allows the ball to stay in the air longer (thus hop up) However, if you make the blaster fire harder the effect becomes to much and it becomes difficult to hit anything because the balls rise too much.
So for some reason mine has many problems with the screws I barely put pressure and they stripped but the worst one broke lucky it was almost done going in
Interesting video especially since you talked about accuracy with the higher velocity. Have you found velocity to affect.the accuracy for standard or Mega darts? While you mentioned it in the video, I am really interested in the Megaladon with K26.

Yes, I am aware which is my dominate eye. I have shot archery and guns almost my entire life. I have taken collegiate level classes in archery and won many tournaments. I know how to aim. The problem is not my aim. It is the inconsistency of the blasters.
Put the other stock pistol spring a double spring it with the Jupiter stock spring so it will be downgraded but still have a increase power but lowers it just enough for possibly accuracy
A Kronos by any other name would be as sweet. Neat shells, but not likely to be used by those looking mainly for performance due to the overall weaker priming systems limiting potential springload.
I can offer an explanation regarding your priming woes with the upgraded Jupiter Captain Xavier: Hearing your complaints and seeing how much you were struggling with the prime seemed very odd to me, as my own Jupiter has had a 13kg spring load in it for all but the first 10 minutes out of the box, and it's very smooth and comfortable (once all of the locks are gone that is). Now admittedly I'm right-handed, so it's my dominant hand/arm doing the work, but that ISN'T why you were having so much trouble with the Jupiter once it had K26 in it - looking more closely at your hand as it's working the bolt I immediately realized why we have such very different impressions: you're holding the bolt the wrong way. The problem is you're TRYING to work that bolt handle exactly like you would on a bolt-action firearm, ie, using the heel of your palm pushing back against the front edge of the bolt. That's something that works just fine in real steel land, but that's because there isn't a beefy spring load pushing back against you as you make that motion - as you've experienced, something that's effortless in real steel (and not TOO difficult in stock form) gets MONSTROUSLY hard when you make the spring that wouldn't be there on an actual firearm in the first place even heavier than it already was... and it's hard because doing it that way you have almost no leverage. Taking that prime from brutally difficult to near effortless only takes a very simple adjustment to your technique however: just make a fist around the bolt handle and pull your arm straight back (kicking your elbow outwards slightly as you do) - in other words, hold your priming hand so the palm is facing 180 degrees from the direction that you've been holding it. Merely turning your hand around the other way shifts the burden of the effort to a different set of muscles in your arm that are manifestly better suited to the task - I tried priming mine the way that you were and OH MAN is that not fun. The difference is night and day.
I am very familiar with the technique you are describing. It works because you are actually pulling with your shoulder, the same way you would draw a longbow. It is a FAR stronger motion. Just one problem. It is not possible to prime it that way it when shooting left-handed. Try it. Shoulder the blaster on your left shoulder and then try to grip the bolt the way you describe with your right hand. It won't work. I tried. That is why it annoys me so much that this blaster is not lefty friendly.

If you use your left hand to hold the Jupiter while priming it with your right hand, it allows for easy access to the trigger

Hey captain Xavier could u do an experimental video on rival Hop-Ups? Because I’m trying to make a precise Long range Rival gun. I also heard of an S hop up on Airsoft that makes the BBs spin at longer ranges.

I haven't played around with Rival much but would attaching a longer barrel after removing the hop-up tab improve the accuracy, at least at short range? And would adding a hop-up tab on the end of the extended barrel negate any accuracy boost?
A barrel might help but would probably kill you range. And yes, adding hop up back in would negate.
Heres a quick question! Do you think you could mod the Mercury to be pump action? A little pump action sidearm would be awesome.
Id imagine it taking a rail on the bottom of the gun that the slide would ride along, with arms going from the pump to the port for the current priming handle, not unlike a longshot pump action mod. Perhaps you could use the pump from a rough cut or something? That seems large enough and of the correct form factor to work. Anyway, great vid as always, keep up the good work!

I know this sounds like an idiot question but when you say hop up and how putting the larger spring in & how it affects this, what are you talking about exactly sir?
There is a rubber tab in the barrel of these blasters that imparts back spin on the balls as they leave the barrel. This results in what is called the Magnus effect which causes the ball to actually fight gravity and allows the ball to stay in the air longer (thus hop up) However, if you make the blaster fire harder the effect becomes to much and it becomes difficult to hit anything because the balls rise too much.
So for some reason mine has many problems with the screws I barely put pressure and they stripped but the worst one broke lucky it was almost done going in
Interesting video especially since you talked about accuracy with the higher velocity. Have you found velocity to affect.the accuracy for standard or Mega darts? While you mentioned it in the video, I am really interested in the Megaladon with K26.
It has a negative effect on Mega Whistler's, not accustrike, accufake, or function heads.

You should put the mercury spring in the Jupiter and try that.
I modified my ultra-tek predator to the best of my ability's and it shot like later and was able to hit just about 25 yards.
All the jupiter need is to able to shoot mega and in captains colors.... and BAM the X-stike Anti Tank Rifle would be born!!!
The Mercury's asymmetrical/ambidextrous priming handle mount would be exceedingly simple to make a pump grip for.

I have yet to hear of anyone successfully rifling Rival barrels. There are rifled barrels for darts.

Yes, I am aware which is my dominate eye. I have shot archery and guns almost my entire life. I have taken collegiate level classes in archery and won many tournaments. I know how to aim. The problem is not my aim. It is the inconsistency of the blasters.

Put the other stock pistol spring a double spring it with the Jupiter stock spring so it will be downgraded but still have a increase power but lowers it just enough for possibly accuracy

You should paint the jupiter up in your customary colors, and try to fit the NV scope on it through modding. Might be dope, I dunno.
A Kronos by any other name would be as sweet. Neat shells, but not likely to be used by those looking mainly for performance due to the overall weaker priming systems limiting potential springload.

I can offer an explanation regarding your priming woes with the upgraded Jupiter Captain Xavier: Hearing your complaints and seeing how much you were struggling with the prime seemed very odd to me, as my own Jupiter has had a 13kg spring load in it for all but the first 10 minutes out of the box, and it's very smooth and comfortable (once all of the locks are gone that is). Now admittedly I'm right-handed, so it's my dominant hand/arm doing the work, but that ISN'T why you were having so much trouble with the Jupiter once it had K26 in it - looking more closely at your hand as it's working the bolt I immediately realized why we have such very different impressions: you're holding the bolt the wrong way.
The problem is you're TRYING to work that bolt handle exactly like you would on a bolt-action firearm, ie, using the heel of your palm pushing back against the front edge of the bolt. That's something that works just fine in real steel land, but that's because there isn't a beefy spring load pushing back against you as you make that motion - as you've experienced, something that's effortless in real steel (and not TOO difficult in stock form) gets MONSTROUSLY hard when you make the spring that wouldn't be there on an actual firearm in the first place even heavier than it already was... and it's hard because doing it that way you have almost no leverage.
Taking that prime from brutally difficult to near effortless only takes a very simple adjustment to your technique however: just make a fist around the bolt handle and pull your arm straight back (kicking your elbow outwards slightly as you do) - in other words, hold your priming hand so the palm is facing 180 degrees from the direction that you've been holding it. Merely turning your hand around the other way shifts the burden of the effort to a different set of muscles in your arm that are manifestly better suited to the task - I tried priming mine the way that you were and OH MAN is that not fun.
The difference is night and day.
I am very familiar with the technique you are describing. It works because you are actually pulling with your shoulder, the same way you would draw a longbow. It is a FAR stronger motion. Just one problem. It is not possible to prime it that way it when shooting left-handed. Try it. Shoulder the blaster on your left shoulder and then try to grip the bolt the way you describe with your right hand. It won't work. I tried. That is why it annoys me so much that this blaster is not lefty friendly.
