  • Let us go get one of the best lenses ever made? Usually when you think of the best lenses, it's Zeiss, Leica, Voigtlander etc. The latest Canon RF glass doesn't really have that character, 3D pop, microcontrast etc. Nikon Z glass? Not really, although the 40mm f2 has some pop. Let's go get a lens I've been trying to get for years!

Also what the hell? Why am I convinced that the 3D pop exists? It’s clearly not the bokeh. Why is it not quantifiable? What is it? Is it the lens distortion that’s only found in vintage glass or what?

That was a fun trip, and what a great lens! Might I say, you could take the lens apart and clean it. I had zero experience with that and never thought I'd do it myself.... until I ran into similar situation. Got a Super Takumar with a VERY sticky focus ring... turning the focus ring actually took the lens off the m42 mount!!! So, watched a few YT videos on how to take the lens apart, cleaned it, successfully put it back together .... and... it works now!!! Still a little needy (as something inside was actually deformed, maybe the lens was badly dropped...), but works well since without coming off. I'd say the 35L is likely a LOT more complicated, but as you need not take the internals apart, it is an easy fix doable at home. Even if it's your first project doing that. (Although I'd recommend practicing on a cheap lens for first try.)
I have the Sigma ART 35mm and it's my favorite lens of all time. (Yup, that's my favorite focal length, cheers ;). I've been wondering about the Canon L first version, that would have been my other choice, but finally decided on the Sigma. Overall, the Sigma is super sharp and has a totally Leica-feel rendering to it, making it my favorite photo lens. It focuses insanely fast, and turned my 5D classic into a low light beast. (Haha, but kind of true! Total life changer on the 5D both in terms of sharpness, dramatically lower ISO noise floor, focus accuracy and speed.) But I'd love to have the dreamy quality of the 35L, that would be perfect for videos ; ). One day.... sigh

Kasey, I bought a sigma (i know my bad) 17-50 f2.8 ef-s lens with a focus motor that squealed like a greased pig getting some loving from a southener, I stripped it down myself after watching some dodgy YT vids and greased the parts myself, reassembly - IT WORKED - BUT it obviously had one final squeal left before it went silent and functions quickly and quietly to this day.

Kasey, I discovered last summer that you can bring a bike on the Go Train that goes straight to Niagara Falls from Union Station (or anywhere along the way) so took my mountain bike. There are a few cars at the end specifically for bicycles. Great to visit the Falls, and visit friends who live on the Niagara Parkway, or Niagara-on-the Lake, etc. In other news... I live in Missusuburbia myself (Streetsville), and it is drab and boring- ugh! Moved from Toronto several years ago- long story. I won't even use any cameras here, unless I stroll along the Credit River in Streetsville, which is actually pretty nice- a strip of nature, hidden amongst the featureless, flat, mall-ridden nothingness.

Hey blessed Kasey, love your work and your monkey 🙈 energy 🙌
I just wanted to share as a fellow canon RF user that as well as a bunch of newer RF glass (that I know you’re avoiding for now) I also use older EF lenses for their size, speed and price as my ‘walkaround’ kit and wanted to entice you to check out the canon EF 28mm f1.8 if you haven’t already, it’s got a great look and very decent sharpness wide open, close focussing and very decent build quality to boot.
That said the 35 1.4L you’ve just scored is very nice too and prolly better corrected with less CÁ than the 28, but bigger by comparison and of course we have to tally in the EF/RF adapter too!
Anyway, enjoy your new toy but check out the 28 once your 35 lust has been sated.

My guess yesterday was correct. It is an adapted lens with focus issues. It does focus better outside in the light, though.

Hope you made it home without incident. I have an idea for a review. All the GPS Nav apps that work on mobile phones in Canada. Which is best? Which results is the least battery consumption?

I've purchased three Canon 50 1.4 because i loved that pos so much. Unique look for a 50. The AF sucked and the focus brackets break constantly. Never again even though i miss it. I still have like 1 and a half in parts hiding in a drawer.

Its possible that it's the AF. But he is on a wireless lav mic, I think. So might be something else.

@@TechLeatherCraft I think he has the mic transmitter plugged into the camera. It'd be easy to just record to something else while using this lens, then sync in post
