Taika Waititi Breaks Down a Fight Scene from Thor: Ragnarok | Notes on a Scene | Vanity Fair

- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- In this episode of "Notes on a Scene," Taika Waititi, the director of "Thor: Ragnarok" breaks down a scene between Thor and Loki, played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. Taika explains the challenge of comedy versus action, the character arc over the three Thor movies, and the symbolism hidden in small actions. Also, see Thor's new haircut...
An idiosyncratic, somewhat fledgling director being handed the reins of one of Marvel’s big light shows can, in a way, feel like a triumph. A budding auteur has gotten the summons from Hollywood-a major career boost for them, sure. But also it’s good for us; it means our superhero movies-which are just a part of life now, and we must accept them-will be better, crafted by more thoughtful hands than some paycheck-mad, blow-’em-up hack’s. Everybody wins!

“Actors are very valuable and we do not want to damage the actor” 😂🤣
They're expensive and repairs are time consuming and cause too much media backlash
@@shealupkes and the insurance
@@diahan9896 oh good lord the insurance..
"Actors aren't people. They're props. Torture them only when you need to."

Well, they only have one Tom, it would be a shame to damage it..
This was incredibly unhelpful yet educational at the same time.
omg hey
I see you everywhere xD not complaining
heyyyy pd!
that's Taika for you!
he didnt really say anything..i knew these things already :D besides.. i dont really like this guy. Weird (its fine sometimes) no sense of humor (this is a really big problem) third and most important: he totally crashed my fav movie series of Marvel universe!! -.-
when he said hello i thought he was going to say “my name is korg, i’m made of rocks, but don’t let that intimidate you”
Unless you're made of scissors.
That's a little rock paper scissors joke for you

"Some would say it's the laziest way" lol I friggin love this director
It's true, though.
It's funny seeing him have to be serious but still having some fun. Just knowing of off the wall he is, I can't imagine what working on his set is like. How would anything get done? Lol
JakeTS1992 well it’s a pretty good movie so I guess it worked out just fine
Like 3.1K
Love him? Well that comment sure didn't age well
@@optimusprime8609 What happened?
He seems like a cool guy, I feel like he’d direct something crazy, like a movie about hitler or something lol
lmao imagine
Yeah something like Jojo rabbit lol, where he even give himself the imaginary Hitler role
@@rayenbenfatma5452 That would be the joke,.
lmao that seems like a bit of a reach idk...
I feel like he would make a good vampire movie
Taika's name means “magic“ in Finnish. That alone is a reason to trust him
It's not supposed to and I kinda think you made this comment up entirely
In maori its tiger
As a Finn, can confirm. When I first heard his name, that was the first thing I thought of as well :D
Yep its true !
I think hes a elf that's come to bring joy to humanity
I like what Taika points out here: comedy is much harder than other genres. So much comedic effort was put into this film and I can confidently say that it was done successfully. Amazing work, undoubtedly one of the best MCU films so far. I'm so happy I decided to go watch it, after all.
michaela nah too many jokes, just like almost every other marvel movie.. wasnt a bad film, but too lighthearted
Only fan-nuglets would call Odin dying and Asgard exploding "too lighthearted"
blusafe1 bro stop it they turned thor into a comedian
That's the thing. These events happened but the movie doesn't address them properly.
well with the fact that Korg made a joke while asgard was exploding, I'd say they're right that it's too lighthearted
"breaks down a fight scene"
fight scene: thor throws loki
Underrated comment 😂😂😂 made me laugh so much
yes lmao i was waiting for fighting and all he talks about is he thor's muscles and ship's design
hahah hes still hilarious without playing korg "they're not this small. this is perspective, theyre back in the distance"
"my biggest regret in making thor ragnarok is not being acknowledged for my amazing design, a box, a flying box. and no ones ever done that before" ... its humor you cant try too hard for.
It's very Kiwi Humour
TheLordOfMadnes I like kiwi humor.
HE PLAYS KORG!?!?
@@KarlaDayelin yes
Karday C he’s also playing hitler in a comedy he directed as well, it’s about a kid who’s imaginary friend is hitler
Can you imagine how much better Thor 1 & 2 could have been with this director at the helm? The first two Thor films were so mediocre in my opinion and this guy really brought the 3rd to life. Out of the 18 MCU films thus far...this one is really close to being my favorite!
Drake Brunette dude, then Thor 3 wouldn’t be as iconic as now because of the limitations of ideas.
I think the first one is actually really underrated
@@Futurevenomzone Agreed. Dark World is awful
First one is Good And Second sucks
The second one was horrible but I actually really liked the first one. 😅😂
It's very curious seeing him in a serious setting - of course he had to be serious when directing a massive freaking film, but it's kinda great to see him getting all technical
He's been a competent director from the start though, right? Not fair to act like his other films weren't serious. He's talented and professional, which is why he was given a big budget movie like this, after all.
Did I ever say anything like that? I'm not saying that I don't think he had to be serious on the sets of his New Zealand films, I'm just saying that I'm used to him acting in not-so-serious roles and that it's interesting to see him discuss the technical side of things with us as a director
And yet still managing to be hilarious.
Serious!? he was the voice/actor of Korg in this movie! :P
He still does it in an entertaining light hearted way, for example when he's talking about the cable rigging and how the guys were'nt really that small, that it was the perspective lol.
“What else can I say about Chris he’s a perfect man”
I mean, is he wrong tho?
I want to watch him doing that to every scene from every film he's ever made for hours on end
moiraine_damodred,
I would watch the hell outta all of that.
moiraine_damodred
He did a developer commentary on ragnarock.
I want to see more of thanos and thor Fighting in the ship. They botched it
I would pay for this to be made and compiled
“Thor ragnarok’s director” YOU DIDNT EVEN PUT HIS NAME
RIGHT!?
he's so iconic we already know his name
That's interesting. I just looked it up and there are some videos on here where they say the name and others where they say 'movie's director'. There doesn't seem to be any bias or purpose behind it, just weird choices. Possibly just whatever they think will draw the most views at the time of making the video, I guess.
Ikrrrr he deserves better
They changed it lol - they obviously saw your comment 😂
I just realized Waititi contributed the one thing the Thor movies sorely lacked - Kirby's crazy visuals. True, the first Thor movie brought Asgard to life, but the early Thor comics were popular because of Kirby's crazy designs
Iris Trismegistus you mean square shapes and really shiny colors? I love them too
You mean generalising to seep any amenity out of life?
What are Kirby's crazy visuals
He was one of the original comic writers, friends with Stan Lee. He created a lot of the superheroes you’ve heard of and his style of drawing was really cool
He even made fun of them in the movie.
If Taika brings Loki back for Thor: Love and Thunder I will actually cry with happiness
We also need Korg back

Tim Kruse I totally agree!
Tim Kruse,
Yep!
I know right, first thing I thought.
Exactly.
People who don't know him won't click on the video. This way he gets more exposure to those who he is unknown to and thus they fall in love with him just as we have. You can't deny, he's a new face in Hollywood.
2:48 "they're not this small, this is perspective, they're back in the distance" lmao
I love that he felt the need to clarify the size lmao
He seems to give the actors clear direction (stand still, say the lines fast). As opposed to other directors who might say intangible stuff like "more passion, more oomph, more fire" etc
I feel like Michael Bay is one of those vague directors, coz he eventually just wants to go to the editing room and just add boom sounds and explosions.
He’s an actor too so he gets how we operate lol
faster and more intense
"But much like raging fire."
No clue what you're saying. Can't believe this comment got so many likes and so many watched this vid. Wish he analyzed a scene w Bruce. Hiddleston never commented on Taika's directing. Buffalo was full of praise for Taika
*Chris Hemsworth & Tom Hiddleston the most well known beloved actors of our time..*
*1:22*
*Taika: "This Guy".. "This Guy"*
It's really cool to see how much Taika's ability to keep the pacing up in this movie extended all the way down to the dialogue. The movie never once felt rushed and it still blows my mind how he managed to streamline that first act without making it a hectic mess.
Yep
Yhea
3:31 why does Loki look like he's about to tell "you're tearing me apart Lisa"
Loki after learning of his true origins:
"Everybody betray me, I'm so fed up with this world!"
"Oh, hi, doggie."
lmaaaaoooooooo
He's a great director
He actually is so have to hit you with a nope back.
he isn't great, he's okay at best...
Felipe Marsal he’s proved that he is great with Ragnarok
I disagree but if you like him that's cool
I think he proved it with what we do in the shadows and hunt for the wilderpeople. I haven't seen ragnarok yet, but shadows is one of my favorite comedies ever. He's also made like 3 of the top 10 NZ movies of all time.
It’s weird seeing him referred to as “Thor: Ragnarok’s director” because Taika Waititi is a personality of his own
So true
Wooow his voice is different than when he's acting. I could swear he sounded like korg all the time 😂
He sounds different here too: ua-cam.com/video/Cv568AzZ-i8/v-deo.html Funny movie, check it out if you haven't already
okay but Korg does sound like Owen Wilson
Korg does not sound like Owen.
He's putting on a stronger Maori accent. A lot of Natives, here in New Zealand, speak like that. We call it "bro talk"
Not even, au!
Yeah, he was putting on a voice similar to Polynesian bouncers.
2:16 'well this is obviously not tom' 😂😂😂
it's so strange seeing him talk seriously about something like who knew he is actually a director and not some goofy dork
He's so cool. He has a funny side, and a serious side, which both mix. And the actors all seem to respect him.
directors should do this for their movies more often, so interesting to watch.
he is actually a brilliant creative people
Well he's both :)
Everhirst Seyt That’s pretty much how the movie was, it was a balanced mix of humour and serious moments

"actors are valuable and we do not want to damage the actor" I friggin love that man
I'm delighted to see that the scene he's commenting on was my favorite in the movie. The conversation in the elevator was so good. I've heard people complain that the movie was too jokey and refused to have any earnest emotions, but I totally disagree mostly on the grounds of the elevator scene. It felt like such a natural outgrowth of their characters across three movies. The greatest thing about Loki is that his motivations are always super clear. He wants fame, he wants to be loved, and he wants to take the most needlessly underhanded route to get there. When he shows up at Asgard in the third act, the only possible response is "Oh, naturally."
The movie knows when to take itself seriously, like Odins death for example.
Waititi is such a blessing. I'd love to buy him a burrito and thank him for staying true to himself.
Very cool, I wish there was more in depth analysis like this on the home release (besides just the commentary) Having the marker was a nice touch
Yeah, can't wait for Ragnarok Dvd. Typically dvd comes out 3 months after movie opens?
Yeah man blu-ray bonus features these days suck
If you wan't more in depth reviews of films (Though not in this format) I highly *highly* recommend Every Frame a Painting. He's not making content any more, but the stuff that's up there is incredible.

The best Thor movie without a doubt
I think when Taika said "There's a crossing over... emotionally." He was being facetious but you didn't hold for his reaction and it played straight.
This elevator ride was one of my favorite scenes.
It's such an underrated scene and its simple too. Top quality directing and acting for thor 3, easily the best of his trilogy
I love that he’s like maaaaaayyyybe there’s some symbolism here. That’s a very relatable thing for a writer to just discover symbolism that wasn’t really meant to be there.
It's a good movie the director got it so right ...I didn't expect this type of movie but God I enjoyed it
I got to meet all three of these guys on set! And Anthony Hopkins. If anyone's wondering- all of them were gigantic sweethearts.
