This is an awesome video! I’m coming from a 10 year old Canon 6D Mk1, and I was picking up tips in the beginners part that I didn’t even know. Just the thing I needed to get started on the R8. Now explain the Canon phone app😂
@@Jason_Hermann Great video! please tell me if it is possible to configure the 47:45 function that you are talking about with anti-flicker in an electronic shutter, it cannot be done on r5 r6. it only works on a mechanical shutter there. What about the r8? thank you!

My Canon R8 got delivered today, my very first Slr/Dslr camera. Thank you so much for your help to navigate the camera. I couldn’t even get the lens to start working initially 🤣👍🏾
Thank you so much! Such a helpful video. Unfortunately, this is the third R8 tutorial video I watched. If this had been the first, I would have only needed to watch one.
Wow...I've been digging around for a few days trying to find detailed info about the interface of this camera, great stuff mate. I just need to choose the lenses and sell all my pentax stuff :-) . Cheers from the grey London
Thank you so much for taking time to explain things. I just got same camera recently and your video really helped me. P.s. I do not normally give a review, but I decided to do it here.
What a great, full explanation with real demonstrations of how things work/are impacted by choices. Special thanks for explaining the Flex mode and multi-function buttons.. Just what I needed. That looks like the mode for me. Also, great demonstration of how spot metering works. (I have that same light too. :) Only thing I noticed about your camera vs. mine.. When I try to choose options on the back screen, it's about 50/50.. whether it lets me select or it tries to focus. I will double check that my touch-focus option is off.. One last thing about "disp performance" - choosing smooth is a great choice... Because using "OVF sim view assist" turns off raw burst for some reason... and does something very similar to choosing 'smooth'. Not sure what that's all about.
Wooaaooo!!! I want to thank you for such a great video. I am a beginner and know nothing about photography, but with your help I can say that I'm learning and getting closer to take some good pics. Thanks again
Thanks so much for this video ! I just upgraded from a 9 year old 700D and even though I know a lot about how I want to set up my camera regarding preferences I was a bit lost in all the new stuff (for me), now I got everything set up as I like to shoot and can sleep well, thanks ;)
Great video, i havent picked up the R8 yet but im set on getting it already, im looking to see the prices around black friday, im tempted to buy the EF/RF adapter before i even get the camera 🤣
Thank you for this very informative video. It's amazing all the technology that is packed into the small R8. So much to learn, but thankfully default settings in most cases are fine, but learning about the different 'modes' especially the SCN mode which is quite powerful was explained well and looks like a nice alternative to TV or AV and the camera does all the work. But the explanations were done well, the video, clear, crisp and well organized and documented! That you again Jason! Bill G.

Hi Jason. Going through your tutorial, I noticed that my camera does not have as settings after the wrench. Also, section 5 only has: Battery info, Manual/software URL and Firmware - unlike yours that have more in the menu.
Great video - However ! In the 'Bulb' section, you say you have to hold the shutter button down with your finger or use a remote or the app. Page 7 of the red menu has a 'Bulb Timer' which allows you to set the duration for the timer. No need for your finger, App or remote. Hope that helps. Keep up the good work.
Hey Steve, Thanks you for sharing that info and I apologize I missed it. That is a killer feature and I will add this info into the description of the video 👊 For those reading here is the link to the "Bulb Mode Timer" option in the manual for a quick instruction on what to do for this feature: cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-03_CustomShooting_0070.html
Hey Jason another great vid. I'm wondering, I know your a Sony guy too and without getting into a bunch of specs and such, but more from a build quality and ergos standpoint, what do you think of the R8 compared to the Sony A6700?
Great video! What i do find is the lack of information as to whether or not this camera can shoot off camera flash? As there is no true mechanical shutter. Is hss a possibility as well? Any infor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again ✌️
Very helpful video, Thank you! Quick question: My R8 is not charging with the USB-C cable like yours does in the video. I have tries mulitple fast charging cables as well as different power sources (wall outlet and high wattage portable power banks), very frustrating. What would be the issue? Thanks!
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you. I did some more experimenting and found that the type-C cable works not the USB-A to USB-C able. DOnt know why but at least I can still get continous charging now.
Hi Jason, Thanks for your awesome tutorials. I am a newbie and have just brought a canon eos r8 and would want to shoot both videos and photos of wedding events and birthday parties. Can you suggest a good lens that will be best for both professional video and stills. Looking forward to your help. Thanks in advance.
Well one of the best go to zoom lenses for that work in my opinion would be the RF 24-70mmm f/2.8 L Lens: geni.us/HXo1Bnu Canon also makes a more affordable f/4 version of the lens as well.
Yes, the cheaper kit lenses will also work, but the aperture is variable and not as fast as f/2.8... Here are all your current options: geni.us/Ek524js Unfortunately no 3rd party lenses like Tamron or Sigma are available yet, so you only have the top dollar L glass as a high quality option. The cheaper 24-105mm might be one of your best options as far as versatility and cost... Another option is to buy the older EF glass and use the RF to EF adapter. This is a great option for Photography, but not so much for video. You can find many EF L lenses on Ebay for cheap, and they are killer optical quality.
When you 'hard set' the white balance, and if you are moving around in different rooms which may have different lighting, do you need to hard set it for each room / light change?
Ideally yes, but you can also use Auto and hope for the best if it's not convenient changing often. Or just pick one and leave it set and deal with it after depending. When I used to do weddings I had a custom WB for each room I would spending time it, and was also using an on camera flash as an example.
Great video! please tell me if it is possible to configure the 47:45 function that you are talking about with anti-flicker in an electronic shutter, it cannot be done on r5 r6. it only works on a mechanical shutter there. What about the r8? thank you!
Hey Jason 👋🏻 New follower here! I have a question... I just bought this camera and mainly shoot in Manual mode. I was wondering if the touch shutter fuction is also in manual mode?
I apologize, but I do not have the camera in hand anymore to try that, but I believe it does work in all modes based on what the manual indicates, but does not clearly say here: cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-04_Shooting-1_0410.html
Yes I believe that will be fine, but may slow down if you are rapid firing as the camera buffer will fill up pretty quick as it will take longer to write the files to the slower SD card.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks! i had some sticker shock at some of the v90 cards, but i know its needed for full performance. Great videos, they've been super helpful to a newbie!
It's an alternative to using the USB power source option for a few reasons. The USB-C port will block the screen which may or may not be an issue for you. Also, when live streaming you need the USB-C port, but the Canon R8 does not allow the camera to charge while using as a webcam or to stream so the battery will die in about 1 hour in that situation. Lastly the after market dummy batteries are cheap and USB-C PD Power Supplies and cables can cost even more depending on the brand and cable length... Just my thoughts though please keep that in mind. All the best, Jay
I've gone from shooting photos on my phone camera to this Canon. I know nothing. It would be helpful if you had a video that only focused on photo versus photo and video, and if you slowed down. I've had to replay multiple times while I tried to find what you were talking about. We beginners are not familiar with the terminology, so it takes us a while to find the items to which you are referring.
I recommend holding your camera and pausing the video as you watch, so you can play with your camera and fallow along sort of thing at your own pace. Perhaps just watch a about 10-20minutes per day sort of thing and then play with your camera the rest of the day, come back for more...
I've used them for years with no issue, and the Canon one was out of stock for a long time, so I linked this one instead... Also, USB power is a great way to go instead of the dummy battery option...
Is there a kind of in-camera editing when you are shooting RAW or if you want to modify your jpegs afterwards and in the menus? Many thanks from France!
I think you might mean the copyright info? cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-08_Set-up_0310.html I don't recall a watermark and can't find that in the manual either...
The AC fake battery is only required when using the USB C socket for tethering? Ie, it can only perform one function at a time: charging, operation, or tethering?
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks! We’re spoiled by the features of iPhones and other categories of devices: Just plug in the one cable and it will do everything as long as it supplies enough power. Well that depends on your needs and the L lenses are both killer options. The 24-105 has a slower f/4 aperture, but a lot more range wich you may or may not need. The 24-70 has a short range, but a fast f/2.8 max aperture which is better for low light and depth of field play at the lower focal lengths... If it were me I would go with the 24-105mm for the more all in one lens option sand extra range. F/4 on a full frame is still fast enough to get incredible shots in most conditions other than super low light. This is why I would recommend picking up an affordable fast prime lens for those situations if they arise... 50mm f/1.8 lens for example... I Hope that helps, Jay
It's very similar to the R6 Mark II I would say which works really well, but does not have the same dynamic range and HIGH ISO/ low light abilities as the A7S III due to the sensor differences. The main difference however would be overheating I would say, because the R8 will overheat if it's warm outside and the A7S III will not...
@@Jason_Hermann I see. It’s a very resent camera and I haven’t seen any low light video tests, yet. Guess I’ll take a look to R6 II low light videos to have an idea of R8 in that aspect. Got another question. I know that the point of the R8 is Full Frame video with no crop. While looking at the video menu part 25:04 there’s “Movie Cropping” so it means you can shoot Super 35mm video, right?
Jason, thank you very much for taking the time to explain the features on the R8. I just ordered the R8 yesterday and can't wait to apply what I've learned. I'm sure I'll refer back to this video a number of times because it's a lot to take in, and it's a great resource. Thank you again, and I look forward to watching your future videos! 😊
Need to wait for an update to Lightroom since this is newer camera... Lightroom needs the RAW data update each time a new camera comes out. This is very common with new cameras, and is often why I shoot in raw+jpeg when I first get a new camera for review...
Yeah I'm not sure either? Maybe the lens you are using? Are you in full auto mode? when in doubt switch to that to see if the camera behavior changes for the better...

Please can you help me it takes some seconds to snap when I press the snap button
Helpful video but I can't turn off silent shutter. My menu for Camera only goes up to 5
Make sure you are in photography mode on the camera as the menu changes depending on what mode you are in....
@@Jason_Hermann thanks so much. Did the trick
Awesome!
how to use electronic shutter speed, so that it can be for 1/16000? pleasee...
You need to change the shutter mode see here: cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-04_Shooting-1_0370.html

How does the R8 4K video behaves in low light, would you say it’s similar compared to a Sony a7S II or III or not at all?
Yes, you can set the camera to APS-C mode and it will be like Super 35mm...
compared to canon 7D, the case feels cheap......why is it?
Because it is a cheaper built body for sure when compared to the 7D...
10/10
Спасибо за видео оно очень подробное
How do I get it to flash manually when I shoot? I clicked on the flash option, but there is no flash :*(
The R8 does not have a built in flash, you would need to purchase a flash separate like this one: geni.us/GW5b5
How open file raw in lightroom? Please
Need to wait for an update to Lightroom since this is newer camera... Lightroom needs the RAW data update each time a new camera comes out. This is very common with new cameras, and is often why I shoot in raw+jpeg when I first get a new camera for review...
I still don’t understand why it takes mine so long to focus before it takes a photo
Yeah I'm not sure either? Maybe the lens you are using? Are you in full auto mode? when in doubt switch to that to see if the camera behavior changes for the better...
👍👍
way too complicated, I think i'l just buy a pallet of disposable cameras 🤣
Perfect video, thanks a lot 🙏🏻
