I'm literally watching this for the first time. Wow it's crazy to see our south African artists being appreciated like this abroad, more than here at home even. Wow
Paul Simon collaborated with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and many other South African artists to create the album Graceland, which showcased black South African music during the height of Apartheid. And, well, the music is really good.
I hardly even saw the bass player - he was in the background and never seemed especially overjoyed. Did you maybe mean the guy with the gold guitar? (Not a bass.)

In case anyone else is looking for more information about the male vocal choir featured here, they're called "Ladysmith Black Mambazo" from South Africa, founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960. As he is still leading the choir in this video, he has since passed away in 2020 at age 79. The only founding member still left in the group is Albert Mazibuko, the second man from the left. So many of his songs have great basslines (Call Me Al, Late in the Evening etc.) When people say that Paul Simon is a great song writer they're probably mostly thinking about his lyrics, but he's a very underrated composer in terms of his music. No one else has incorporated so many different genres and musical styles (African, Brazilian, Latin, Cajun, reggae, jazz, gospel etc.) while always remaining true to themselves.
Right on bluepiano... Paul Simon is a master composer of music in many styles while maintaining originality. Jerry Garcia is another master of many genres while not sounding derivative of everything else. Garcia played folk, bluegrass, blues, rock, reggae, funk, fusion, and more while maintaining his ethos of always improvising musically & never playing a song the same way. Jerry Garcia & Paul Simon are my two favorite artists to come out of the 60's. Their musical legacies will still be appreciated many generations from now.

This Song never fades. Thumbs up if you Agree
We missed the original 1987 Graceland gig in Harare by a week, so getting to see the Hyde park gig was like a dream. Ladysmith stole the show again... Just pure raw magic. I wept.
I saw the concert on TV in 87 while I was in Texas. I had the chance to see Paul Simon a few times when back in Germany. And the great Miriam Makeba ❤
Paul Simon. Rules. Ta 🦊🐟
RIP to the 222 poor souls who have no idea what good music is

Paul Simon is Gods gift to mankind
It's criminal that the director never shows a good close-up of the bass player. His feel is absolutely insane.
Beautiful fretless tone
