    Kyle! I’m so happy I found your channel!!! Professor Valverde was my professor at UC Davis and was one of the best professors I’ve had and opened my eyes sooo much to the Asian diaspora. She made me reflect a lot about my life growing up, my parents and others around me. I’m sooo happy there is someone who dedicates their time to travel and document the history of us Vietnamese!! Can’t wait to binge more videos. :).

    Lastly, whether or not you continue to make videos similar to those of the past I will continue to support you along with future videos you share. Thank you for bringing a spotlight upon Vietnamese culture and wish you the best of luck.

    I've just started watching your videos and I'm enjoying the personal stories. It's amazing to me how many people in the neighbourhoods you're searching have such good memories about the people that lived around them and so long ago!! You can tell that family and community are very important to most of them. I hope you're able to continue this work as it seems to be something you're meant to do at this time in your life. I will spend the next while, watching and crying as I go through these personal journey's. Thanks again.

      Don’t trust 23andme, they either dont have Vietnamese category or got it all wrong. Vietnamese is diverse, there are 54 ethnic in Vietnam, Kinh ethnic is the major of the population even Kinh is also a mixed from other ethnic.

    • @leet3298
      @leet3298 6 років тому +2

      Bé Châu Phi
      They actually got my ethnic makeup fairly accurate and were able to recognize my family members. So I'm not quite sure what you mean? They aren't that specific because there isn't enough of a database for Vietnamese people yet... But as they get more samples they are improving ethnic makeup.

    Good update. Love the intellectual discussion of the affects of people returning to Vietnam. From what I saw, the people returning are bringing investment and job opportunities, but also creating a huge income disparity between rich and poor. So its a real double edged sword.

    Our ancester's Legend is about a mixed marriage between a Heavenly fairy and a sea dragon remember? Our race is a mixture between the Polynesian which is the (dragon of the Sea) and the people from the mountain which is the (fairy) from the mountain of Northern Vietnam. The bond of these two groups created us. We were always mix from the very beginning.

    🤗Hi Kyle! I've been watching your videos on and off sometime since 2017..great work on documentary/story in Asia and in Europe..Keep it up!!!👍 Oh by the way, Sacramento is my hometown so it was nice you came through, saw the scenic view on your video before heading to Oakland☺️. Last year when I saw your video I didn't think you were full Vietnamese I thought your family background/ancestor has other asian ethnicity..like me I'm Khmer(Cambodia), Chinese, Siam(Thai), Laotian, and maybe Indonesian or East Indian(dad's dad side of the family/ancestor) not too sure..I was thinking of doing DNA testing myself too..I really enjoyed your videos on how Asians lives in other countries that I might not expect to see or heard of it? If it wasn't your videos, like Africa, Europe, Brazil etc...Please do more of it, I really enjoyed it and just amazing how Asians are everywhere in those continents...💖❤️💗

      tamar tamar Imperial China has dominated Vietnam multiple times over the last 2300 years. Han Chinese are living all over the world, not just in countries with a shared border. So plenty of chances for inter-marriage under all kinds of circumstances.

I started watching your videos because I'm obsessed with Copenhagen, and seek out related videos, when I'm itching to go back to CPH. I continued to watch because I'm interested in all my neighbors. A lot of my coworkers are of Vietnamese descent or from there. I also have coworker's who are ethnically Chinese/Vietnamese. So, it's all interesting to me. Especially as a primary African-American, but a lot of Irish. I've enjoyed all your videos👍🏾

    Genetics is only 1 aspect of the artificial construct of 'ethnicity'; culture, language and food probably have deeper impacts on how one sees one's own race.

  • @hiremycameradotcom8633
    @hiremycameradotcom8633 6 років тому +7

    Whenever I hear about these DNA tests, a question comes to mind: What criteria does it use? If I ever got past that question, an even bigger issue comes to mind: The results show NATIONALITY, not ethnicity. Nations are defined by borders. Borders are man-made and can change at will. If my results show my nationality (Vietnamese, Chinese, etc.) and the border changes, does that change the result of my "DNA?" For example, Germany borders Poland. I do a test and it shows that I'm 50% German and 50% Polish. Decades from now, something happens, and Germany annexes Poland so that the entire country of Poland is now a part of the new Germany. Consequently, does that now make me 100% German?

    I miss my favorite Vietnamese restaurants back in Guam. I grew up there. If you think Trinidad is very diverse, Guam is even more Diverse. We have alot of Vietnamese refugees back in Guam. Some of them became local farmers. Guam is my second home, Philippines is my 1st.back in Guam they teach us about Vietnam and Korean War. Here in California, my son never learn any of it. They also teach students there about migrations.

    Looking at a map, it would appear the proximity of Vietnam and China is so close with only a border separating the two regions. Therefore it would be perfectly normal for the two DNA’s to be alike. The only differences would be cultural. To say they’re different is like saying one’s DNA is either America vs Canadian. We’re the same region.

    Vietnam was invaded and occupied by China in ancient times so that should be easy to explain. A lot of Vietnamese got Chinese blood. A man who travels the world yet get off in Sacramento instead of San Franciso which is right across the bay from Oakland. I was in San Franciso in 1997. I took the train over to Oakland. That's when I realized what Mark Twain meant when he said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Franciso." I was there in the month of August. I needed a jacket. But in Oakland I felt like I was really in California. Anyway years later I did visit Sacramento when the Terminator was governor. I had to visit to see if the place for myself. I think it got more in common with Oakland than with San Franciso. That's an interesting story about going to Vietnam and being followed around being told she cannot be protected. Now Vietnam moved to a market economy so they opened up tourism and rely, in part, on tourism revenue. The only people who follow us around now are the shoeshine men and vendors who want to ply their trade.

    Hey, I just got the results of a CSI DNA test, and I share 2% DNA with Vietnamese. I presumed these ancestors were spice pirates and slave trade Portuguese associates when 23 and me said I was part Japanese and my brother part Chinese. Now it has become murkier. It would seem that my native American ancestry has a connection to South America and Polynesian crossings. Maybe I'm like one of those butterflies that resemble another species of butterfly. I don't think they would mistake French and Native American DNA mixed with South Seas Pirate or India stuff for Vietnamese DNA. Interesting video.

    From your facial feature, you are a mixture of Han Chinese and Austroasiatic Muong or Khmer.
    These so-called genetic tests are a scam. Vietnam has 54 ethnicities, China has 56 ethnicities so there's no such thing as Vietnamese ethnicity. Vietnamese is a nationality and not ethnicity, the same goes with Chinese.
    These genetic tests group people based on nationality and not ethnicity which is grossly wrong. It's just like saying that blacks and white in American have the same genes just because they are from the same country. LOL.
