Thank you for the update. I could feel your pain as you described all of those places that are now gone. I have many pictures and memories of Lahina that I will chairish forever. Rebuilding will be tough but I hope that it happens. I met a wood turner in the upper level of the Wharf. He had lots of turnings on display. A terrible loss!!!

Happy Birthday, Steve! My wife and I really appreciate you and all your videos. Have you heard if Lahaina will try and move all their electrical wires underground so avoid high wind issues in the future? Those electric poles are unsightly and dangerous.
Aloha Steve. Yea, that question has been "lingering" for many years. It would be very expensive, and be very disruptive tearing up the limited number of streets we have, along with the fact the hard lava is difficult to drill into. It would be tough to do, but we are always having the poles fall down. There's just not a real good, affordable solution. Especially now when so much is needed to rebuild. my place gets worse storms and have the unsightly electrical wires and we have no problem with fires. Its because the electrical companies trim the trees and turn off the electricity during storms. The vid owner also mentioned other difficulties..

Great work. Very helpful video. I'm in 10E. Painful how slow it's moving. I had to leave the State to take care of my family. Probably would have gotten more support if i stayed. Really hard to keep track of the openings. Would be way to expensive to get a plane ticket last second.

Is the apartment still standing? If you have a crystal ball or hear that area 10 will open in X timeframe.....would love to hear.

So sorry for your losses from the fire. We just recently returned from Maui. We had reservations in Honokowai but decided to stay in Kihei as to give the people in the West some space. All of the business losses are heartbreaking! My husband and I loved Sunrise Cafe!!! I hope the owner are ok and will be able to open again someday. Awesome Loco Moco. We met and bought a beautiful photo from Christopher Egan and his lovely wife in 2020. What a great guy and my heart breaks for him. I’m glad to see he still has a gallery in Wailea. Eat at Nalu’s in Kihei!!! The food, service and prices are all amazing!!! Continued prayers for all of Maui 🙏🏻

I had Eggs Benedict To-Go from Sunrise Cafe 100 times. Excellent. I sold Christopher Egan his very first Nikon camera and sent him on his path to success, when I managed Lighthaus Camera store on Dickenson St. for many years. He owes me! Belated Happy Birthday Steve. Thanks for the update. We went to Foodland for groceries on 8/8 and we're grateful to be safe. Some videos are on my UA-cam. Been giving and encouraging people to give to help with Lahaina recovery. We would love to help physically rebuild. Wear your respirator (lots of toxins in the dirt that can be airborne) when you visit your old home. We're rooting, praying, giving and thinking of you and yours. Each day is a gift.

Prayers to the survivors of Maui trying to keep updated so sad and very unhappy that our government isn't helping much
Aloha. I know you won't like to hear this, but my Gov't has been totally unbelievable. FEMA, Red Cross, SBA, Homeland Security, etc. were here within hours. Pres. Biden flew 20 hours each way to walk through the damage and meet with displaced residents. Money has flowed. FEMA money, Red Cross just handed out another $2,500 to each displaced resident that was totally unexpected. If I have one big gripe, it's that too much money has come to Maui and 20% of it was fraud to many who lived on the other side of the island and were not affected in the least. Mental & Medical assistance everywhere. Too many lawyers walking around. On-and-On. Sorry to burst your bubble. Take Care. (Today, my wife and I each will get our 2nd monthly $1,200.00 from the Oprah Fund. Unreal the money that has come to Maui.

Everyone says the electric power was turned out early in the day. Yet when the fire was most fierce around 3 to 4 pm the police didn't let the traffic go in the main street next to ocean because of ,supposedly electrical power lines. The traffic was being blocked there and many folks perished because of that fact , you tell me , was on purpose or ignorance ?
Aloha. 4-5-6 hours before we smelled smoke, I was on my knees with a police officer blocking traffic from going to Front Street on Lahainaluna Road. The winds were over 70mph there. The power lines were totally down and sparks were everywhere. The 2nd story part of Lahaina Grill (Lahaina Inn) was in the street. We could see the second floor of Cheeseburger in the ocean and lying on Front Street. Our poles are shallow in depth (we're on a lava rock island, FYI) and most are termite-infested. They snap like match sticks. Come to Maui sometime and learn the facts.

Aloha. Not true at all. I have some video and pictures showing most roads open. I was asked to get in a patrol car, and the officer explained that he was "short handed" and needed to go to another site and asked me to take care of some people in wheelchairs and with walkers. Did they make some back decisions, now that we're able to look back. Yes. Did I make horrendous decisions myself? YES! I have so many regrets. My biggest is that I didn't immediately sense the magnitude of the danger and get Patricia in the car with our long-time neighbor Freeman, and drive NORTH. He died at the seawall where we took him. I left my car. We ran south instead of doing the smart thing and going north. I have a long list of horrible, stupid mistakes. The Police saved lives. BTW -- none of us were prepared for the decisions we had to make. We all did the best we could do. Hindsight is A Magnificent But Deceiving Thing. Best Wishes.

Aloha and Thank You! Yes, almost six (6) years ago the sirens went off. I remember it and also remember all the other times the so-called "tsunami" alarms have gone off with no sign of anything. We've had many "false alarms" and there is the misconception that it is for a tsunami, when it's for anything of significance. It sends, wrongly, people up the hill -- right into a possible fire. i don't understand how that fire got so bad, closest thing i've ever heard to this is the Detroit area where they are so broke the fire department just let's entire neighborhoods burn down rather than spend the resources to fight it
Aloha. Thanks for your message. COMBINE: 1.) Horrific winds up to 82mph. 2.) Extremely dry Lahaina Town, known for heat. 3.) Buildings of wood. Repeat. No brick, concrete, or cinder blocks. All dry, old, cheap wood. 4.) Telephone poles infested with termites that snap easily. 5.) Weak power lines that tend to "droop" more than others. 6.) A very small contingent of fire stations, firefighters, and police officers for just 7% of the entire island. 7.) Solar panels that are "death traps" in fires with Lithium Ion materials and batteries. 8.) Every house has at least one outdoor grill with propane/butane/gas tanks. Every One! 9.) House made of cheap, dry wood. 10.) As you know, most locals keep the cars full of gas. 11.) A warning system that is built, mostly, for a tsunami or water surge. 12,) A DIRECT HIT by a horrific, powerful, never diminishing hurricane. OK. That's just off-the-top-of-my-head. I got more. I was at Kihei Cafe on this particular Saturday! Great place. Maui was wonderful. Drove by Lahaina and it was an awful site. So sad…many locals are suspicious of government now 🤷🏼♂️. Wish I lived in Maui. I’d visit Honolulu a couple times a year but just relax and take it easy in Maui! Haven’t hit the lottery so this hasn’t happened yet 😂

When I finally get to my residence (I'm 10A on the re-entry map) I must have a National Guard escort and can only go to my residence as shown on my ID card. Many have been arrested immediately after trying to enter the Burn Zone. They have security everywhere. I'm confident if there are valuables somewhere under the ashes, the valuables will still be there. How would anyone know where to look if they went to a huge area of ashes? Looking at the pictures, it is difficult to even find an exact location. Oh, Well. We shall see. Thank You.

Also, I look forward to you helping me understand the "nature" of the TWO FIRES -- please look at the Kula Fire that was happening simultaneously, at the exact same time, as the fire in Lahaina Town. My question why do they have rocks along the highway why don't they allow you to stop what are they hiding?
Aloha and Thank You. First, there is not much to see up that high along the Bypass. Also, it would just create a major traffic issue, when the bypass is the ONLY road out of West Maui. The goal is to keep the traffic moving. Example: During whale season, we have major traffic issues and, quite often, wrecks along Hwy 30 as people stop to see the whales in the ocean. It is a big problem. Thank You!

He quickly got some "stipend" money. Then some more money while they did the paperwork. He got a ton of money for the house and we received money for all of our businesses that were burned. Skip got "lost of income" money. A lot. He would love to do a testimonial about State Farm. They gave him a lot for "piddly" stuff that was in our warehouse. Unreal. Hats off to all of them.
