For those wondering, the locomotives are GE BB40-9WMs. They’re identical to the classic North American Dash-9 (C40-9W), except that they’re fitted with a different wheel arrangement. These dash-9s have a B+B-B+B (4 trucks, 2 on each side, each truck with 2 powered axels, 8 axels total) wheel arrangement, which is made for Brazil’s narrow 1 meter (3 ft 3-3/8 in) gauge railways. The North American Dash-9s use a C-C (2 trucks, one on each side, each truck has 3 powered axels, 6 axels total) wheel arrangement, and standard track width in North America is 4 ft 8-1/2 inches. It’s cool that GE still makes the dash-9, but only for export. It can no longer be made for the US market as it doesn’t meet the EPA’s tier 4 emission standards. EMD did this with the SD70ACe, which also can no longer be made for the US market with its T3 engine. It’s now exported to Brazil as the SD70ACe-bb with the B+B-B+B wheel arrangement. This is hands down one of the coolest catches I’ve seen. Those big ass CAT 992K loaders were cool too. They’re close to some of the biggest loaders in the world!
@trainman5371 percebo que você é um expert em locomotivas, você quis dizer que a emissão de gases poluentes no Brasil é mais rigorosa que nos US ou ao contrário. Abraço amigo!
Now apparently neither Caterpillar nor WABCO make any "EMD" or "GE" locomotives for the US at all, which is why we get stuck with lousy, ugly Siemens junk now. This country can't even retain its own locomotive manufacturers... Pretty pathetic.
Pretty neat. Reminds me of the time I came across a whole train of wind turbine components running from Nashville to Memphis. Too bad I didn't have a video camera with me. The Caterpillar wheel loaders were built at the plant I worked at, Aurora IL, though most of their output was sent by truck...guessing that they liked paying extra for shipping or something. Not much there now, most of the production was sent to Mexico, with only final assembly in a new plant in Texas. The track dozers were built in Peoria.
Kevin Olschesky overseas markets don’t really care who your president is. We buy because it’s the most appropriate product for our purposes. Here in Australia, we buy from all over the world as well as make our own products. Pretty much all the motive power on our iron ore railways in north west Australia are pure US domestic locomotives. In fact, some have returned to the US, are refurbished and now operate on your own routes. You’d never pick them. We’ve been buying them like that since the 1960s because they do the job.
Actually Kevin, the EPA forced US locomotive manufacturers to limit pollution and increase efficiency. The manufacturers cried that it would kill their business. You know what happened? They met the higher EPA standards, by burning less diesel and in turn, made a product that is in demand around the world because of this!
Thank you for posting this excelent video. That is a good example of how a Latin American country could keep on working with US locomotive engines. I hope my country as Argentina could do the same.

@@philipbrailey Because everything on the train was assembled in the USA, but the technology and electronics had to be purchased in Germany? Fortunately you now have the trump, so we can continue to sell you our old stuff :-)
1. 14 x engines = $42M 2. 4 Cat Loaders = $750K 3. 44 x Case farm tractors = $2.3M 4. 4 x Cat D9T bulldozers = $2M Combined will give a total price of just under $50M, that cargo is worth it's weight in gold. Wouldn't mind acquiring those D9T's and Loaders, plus a couple engines from that stock pile. 👍
Im pretty sure your math is off a bit... those cat loaders are close to 1m each...along with the d9s. The farm tractor ls range in the $200 - 300k each
Gross tonnage was probably around 7000 tons. The GE units and their trucks weigh about 200 tons each and while impressive the rest of the loads are not all that heavy, just bulky. The two EMD locomotives are 4300 HP each so that would be 8600 HP, far within the general 1 HP per ton rule of thumb. This would actually not be an easy train to run as there is a lot of slack in all those long drawbar flats.
I saw the same thing with a full track (66 cars) of John Deere tractors, combines, etc in 2009 when the U.S. economy took a nosedive. That was the last of the large John Deere orders i have ever seen.

I have a different take. If those were on their trucks, on a boat, in heavy seas, they would all shift back and forth at one time. Could you imagine the weight transfer. However, it could be all those things together, gauge, height and weight transfer. :)
Curious why don't they utilize that B-B + B-B truck configuration here in the states? Seems like you would get better traction and weight distribution, particularly on older lighter built routes.

From what I can see the Brazil's gauge is narrower. But the tandem bogie pairs for locomotive- that's unusual.

Are they shipping these engines this way because they are for a different gauge?
Would think it would be easier to transport these with the wheels on on flat cars even if they were set up for a different gage. Anyone know the reasoning behind this?
Due to clearance under bridges and through tunnels.
I think your question is would it be easier to transport them with the trucks on. There is a lot of labor and man-hours to re gauge wheels disassembly of the trucks adjust the wheels reassemble the truck and put the loco on the trucks. This way It's much easier for them to jack the locomotive or lift it with a crane onto the trucks reconnect the air line, traction motors and hand brake maybe test it and they are done.

I bet it is to distribute the weight around more evenly. It kinda sounds like they might have older lightweight rail in Brazil
Narrow gauge. You need 16 axles for the weight of the locomotives. Two four axle trucks at each end with a span bolster to connect them.
8=4
Those are probably for Brazil. Look at the space for trucks..... they use a lot of B-B B-B on their narrow gauge lines!
