Target Calls Security on me for asking a question + Per Purchase Vs. Per Transaction

  • I informed Zach (red shirt) that I would like to speak to a manager to verify the coupon policy. I was concerned because the staff was misinformed. I know Targets corporate policy well, and I figured a Manager could easily deescalate the situation. Instead, they sent security. Yes, they profiled me and sent security. Most likely assuming that I would soon act out of character. Chris, the security guard, was unable to get the reaction he had hoped for. He was instead met with an educated and sophisticated Black Woman. When we stand together in the #couponcommunity these incidents will stop. I was extremely embarrassed, but I stood up for myself. The entire incident took almost an hour. It was nearly closing time when I left.
    Target Policy can be found here:

      I didn't work at target but my store had a 4 of the same coupons per a day limit. I followed it strictly because my store tracked every transaction digitally according to ur log in. Once, a scanned 5 instead of 4 and 15 mins later a loss prevention associate came out and 'had a talk with me' and then my manager wrote me up. Then, at the end of your shift you passed in the coupon bag so that someone could go through all the digital text recordings of the transactions and match up the coupons. Target sounds chill...lol.

      At ours, AP is extremely by the book, perhaps they were more relaxed and lenient at yours (lucky). Here, though, you take fake coupons or they find you're not following manufacturer's policy, you get a coaching.Three coachings, you get a write up. Three write ups equal a termination.

      Trust me leave the cashier alone she didn’t want to that. The bosses always get on their cases YES AT TARGET about accepting certain coupons and having to split them up. She didn’t want to die that because if they don’t they get in trouble from the gsa. They check their coupon drawer. Point blank period!

      @@musicamovita well it doesn't seem as if she scanned them at all because the computer would have taken them, no override option should have come up. Another huge problem is that no one is probably trained at Target and rely completely on an LOD for every little thing. Also at the store I worked at their was no coaching- they went straight to a write up, so count Yourself lucky.

    • @musicamovita
      @musicamovita 5 років тому +3

      @@danibobmk1998 Yeah, the systems are flawed that way. My first week I was able to scan 6 completely fraudulent coupons for Similac or Enfamil, can't remember which ($15 off every one) and it was only when the GSA noticed what was happening that the guy took off with the items he had already gotten away with (he paid like $7 and change). I got a coaching my first week that trickled down from the head of AP, but I asked her specifically to train me on coupons after that. Haven't had a problem since then. After proper training, neither should she.

      Its not thats its coming out of their "personal pocket" Its the fact that employees are scared to make mistakes because of the consequences associated afterwords.
      The cashier said she was told only 1 coupon could be used so she tried to oblige by that rule (whether it was right or wrong);
      What people dont realize is that each time a cashier bends the rule for you they are taking on the risk of being spoken to by management later on and possibly being writen up for it. Think about that next time you try to use multiple coupons at some place that only allows one per transaction.

      WRO coupons are a form of tender. Target loses money for each coupon that was accepted outside the scope of the manufacturers policy. The manufacturer will not give Target the money for the coupon if Target wrongly accepts a coupon. This is why AP, security, is in charge of training cashiers on coupons and why the cashier called AP.

      Lillian Bailey No! You are missing the most important parts! This shouldn't had happened in the 1st place as it is a SIMPLE WORDING! And Coupons have been around since '70's!? Lol And it's their duties that they train their employees on such a simple thing! No special TRAINING needed!This happened to me 20 years ago! I stopped shopping there & begged them to educate their employees!! Th corporations often do pay Target & merchants for their coupons as it's a great advantage for them as a good marketing & as like advertising as well as they can grab new customers on their products as they try it for less $! If coupons were such troubles to them then they wouldn't be existing this long!!! As long as there are businesses & consumers then coupons are most definitely !!! We all go hand - in - hand! Coupons are here to stay! They even had described the differences between PER PURCHASE and PER ITEM on their website someone commented here ! Apparently not good enough! Lol.They should print it out & post it at each CASHIER'S COUNTER at every SINGLE store!

I see the policy has changed since the time I last used a manufacturer coupon in store. People probably get really angry due to their right to refuse coupons policy, after all you took so much time to come down to the store and look for what you wanted to buy. A lot of people are scared of dealing with outbursts. I bet at an employee meeting the manager suggested that the next time she had to deal with angry customers that she just call security to help her deal with the situation. I work at Target for 4 years as security, I started off as a cashier and guest service attendant.
    Our store policy (which is different in every store) is you can use 4 identical coupons in one transaction and a guest can only have one transaction per household. If you come in as a group (Mom, sister, cousin) y’all are considered a ‘household’ whether you live separately or not.
    What you were saying is correct a purchase is not the same as a transaction. And there was no need for them to call security, you were not being loud or using fraudulent coupons.
    Seems to me the front end did not know how to do their jobs and they like to turn to security to fix their issues (as most store seem to have a habit of doing) instead of the LOD.
    Luckily my store knows their store policy and how to read coupons. And know when it’s appropriate to call security. When I started security I had to get them out of the habit of calling me for little things like this to.
    Anyways, so sorry your experience went wrong, obviously this store isn’t coupon friendly, hope that you have another target near you that makes your shopping experience better than this one.

And if as a corporation, you do not like processing coupons, then you should just reduce the price of the item.

    I work at Guest Services at Target. Assets Protection (aka "Security") does more than just tackle people, they are also the last voice on coupons (protecting agains coupon fraud) and returns/exchanges (protecting against stolen goods being returned), they get carts (lost items), they have the only access to a copy of a receipt going back 30 days (receipts are attached to recorded transactions) they patrol the parking lot in case you left your door open or what have you. The reason they called AP is because they are supposed to be the coupon experts and ultimately have the last say on whether or not a coupon is fraudulent or is being used in fraud. I'm sorry you were offended, but they really are the reigning authority on coupon policy.
    THAT BEING SAID. At our store the cashiers are very well trained on this policy. A purchase means "item being purchased", a shopping trip means "transaction". If you have four coupons (idk for Dove soap) and each one says "Limit of 1 per purchase. Limit of 4 identical coupons per household per day" that means each dove soap you are buying can be accompanied by a coupon BUT you can only use up to 4 coupons. You buying 5 dove soaps? Only 4 coupons. You buying 3 dove soaps? Only 3 coupons. This Target was wrong all the way around here. I can't believe even AP was that poorly trained.

    • @rachellaylee3425
      @rachellaylee3425 5 років тому +8

      As a former employee of target I'm honestly shocked that any target has good training. I wasn't trained until two months on how to stack meats when I worked on grocery. We also weren't trained on the rest of the store or devices we had to use. We had to pretty much figure it out or another employee who knew it would teach it to us on the floor. Another issue is ADA policy explicitly with service dogs. I'm now disabled and have a service dog. Targets current policy is to not get involved with any dog in the store. Businesses do have rights that you should know especially because another team can be injured if someone is faking and bringing an aggressive dog in. If had friends who have been attacked in targets and Walmarts because employees aren't trained on everything. That being said it is impossible to train on everything and still be efficient especially during the holiday season when I was hired.

      @@rachellaylee3425 oh yeah! We were told we can only ask two questions: is that a service dog? What is it trained to do?
      But no one does and people bring in whatever they want. I've seen very few actual service dogs here, you can tell the difference. No handler would be okay with all the petting and cooing that happens around here. We have an EXTREMELY strict AP ETL. So we get strict instructions on a lot of things up front. But, you're right, there still a lot you have to learn on your own.

    • @rachellaylee3425
      @rachellaylee3425 5 років тому +6

      @@musicamovita exactly and as a business if a service dog real or fake disturbs the peace of the store, for example is barking when not tasking and jumping or lounging at other people in the store/ obviously not in control of the handler, a business can ask that team to leave the premises. Just like if someone started harassing people at your store and screaming in the isle and you ask them to leave you can do the same to a team. Some service dog etiquette that you may know is to address the handler only and ignore the dog unless the dog is doing something wrong. Some dogs for PTSD patients may bark if things get even slightly escalated. That is how they task typically for war vets the dog is trained to bark so they have an excuse to leave a situation. You may even see dogs jump on their handler or paw on their handler that is normal tasking behavior but you shouldn't see the dog to it to anyone else. Small toy dogs in a cart isn't always a sign of a fake service dog. Many diabetic alert dogs need to be close to their handler it's unsure why but we believe they smell something on us. The further away they are from the handlers sweat glands or breath the less accurate an alert gets. Many choose to go with a small dog as it's more convenient. So the size of the dog doesn't classify them as service dog or not. It's also not required to wear a vest by ada laws. Vests and dog gear can get expensive and most disabled people are strapped for cash. Service dog ids are not a thing as the us government does not regulate this. And seeing a fake I'd is not the sign of a fake team some teams don't know better or they think it helps them pass better because people think sd are regulated. Last but certainly not least there is a small loophole for sd in the leash laws. Sd are required to be leashed just like any other dog in public unless they are doing a specific task or that it interferes with the handlers disability. Most of the time though leash issues don't even become an issue unless the dog jumps on someone runs away from the owner or does something else that would be really bad. Then it's best to call the police if say a dog attack happened. That dog then has to be reported and there is no protection for aggressive service dogs. Most likely the dog will be put down and the handler held accountable for damages to the store and the other person or other team.

      @@musicamovita oh and also emotional support animals/ ESA are not service dogs. The difference between ESA and a psychiatric service dog is while both handlers have issues the psychiatric service dog is trained to help. That means the do deep pressure therapy they "block" when people come up to the owner. This simply helps people who feel extreme anxiety feel like there is a barrier or it helps them feel grounded as sometimes the dog leans into their legs. Esas aren't trained to mitigate the handlers disability and therefore don't get public access rights. While someone may say there dog is an esa I recommend not kicking them out unless the dog is causing a problem. Even putting their mouths on merchandise can be a flag especially if it's something like a pillow. Sometimes owners will train their dogs to grab things but behavior after Ward is imperative. If the dog grabs merchandise and gives it to the owner it's considered tasking if it plays with it on the floor then it's not tasking and likely isn't trained well. A bad habit I hate in the community is that some handlers believe they can use the stores merchandise on the floor and around the dog to train in distraction techniques. This will especially be common in the dog toy isle and where there are pillows. I hate it it's a terrible thing that the community thinks is ok. And you can kick them out for that. If someone is having a medical emergency it's best to have "security" loss protection or asset protections watch the person either in person but out of the way or with the store cameras. Some people fake medical things while others you don't want the store to be held liable if there is an actual medical emergency. Always try to ask the person if they are able to answer or ask if the have a significant other or friend with them. Most likely if they have a medical alert dog friends and family will know proper protocol. It definitely is a lot of information but it's extremely important.

    I work for Target, I am a GSA. We are trained to read the coupons very carefully, because people do try to abuse our system. But it is limit 4 per transaction of an identical coupon (unless the coupon states 2 per transaction) and when it says per purchase it does mean per item you are purchasing. Say 4 coupons that are 1 per purchase but you're buying 4 of those items, that is fine. But... I hate to use caps but ONE TRANSACTION per guest... I can't say it loud enough. I know you didn't try it, I just want to make it clear.
    I am sorry they called AP up for this while they should have called the GSA/GSTL or LOD, who should have been able to resolve this issue, as you were not in the wrong.

      I was a GSA at Target as well, I’ve had store security help out sometimes with coupon issues or to clarify coupon policies. Sometimes management can’t always come to the front of the store if they are helping a guest on the sales floor. That is when the friendly store security come & go the extra mile & try to help out where they can. I have seen this so many times to be honest. I’m not surprised about many new cashiers not knowing the specifics with the coupon policies. I know I have been told on numerous occasions that Target Reserves The Right To Refuse Coupons from anyone if the store chooses to do so. I have honestly never seen that happen but it is a right that Target can choose to do. Or so I believe per Target Management. Coupons were one of the biggest issues my store had with coupon fraud. People would be printing copies after copies & trying to use fake coupons or expired ones. Some people would try to use any coupons for the wrong items, sometimes the cashiers would catch it sometimes not. The cashiers have to really be involved & know the policies of the store in order to be at that level with the guest. Sometimes the coupon policy can get skimmed over in training. The turn over rate usually in any Target store is pretty high, so having team members who are new & not fully trained is very easy to find. Having so many new people all the time creates an environment where a guest may have a question or a concern & the new team members may not have a clue on what the policies of the store is. You have to love good ole Target lol

If the coupon didn't work, then I'd get to the bottom of why... but the system is supposed to be set up to do what the company policy is. If you can't use more than certain number of coupons, the computer should stop accepting them. If it doesn't, that's on the people who programmed the system. If I scan 30 coupons and the computer accepts them all, that's not my fault. LOL
    I am appalled that when you asked to speak to a manager, a manager wasn't called over. Security should only ever be called if a person is throwing a physically violent tantrum. All those purchases are my transaction. It is not that complicated, Target...get your ish together. One coupon per item is what it amounts to.

Target "security" is actually a loss prevention officer. They are EXACTLY the person that should have been called. When you're talking about the possibility of a coupon not being something that they can take(regardless of whether they were right in this situation), loss prevention is the department that would handle that. Considering taking a fraudulent or non accepted coupon for the transaction would result in a company loss of the amount of the coupon.

How the hell does a coupon question for a MANAGER get you a security guard?! Basic training says the manager is paid to know that shit, and the security guard is paid to know security shit. This truly makes no sense and I’m not asking for a response.. if I ever had a customer with a question that I couldn’t help with, my ass called for my manager NOT the SG that waddles around the store. And above that, she as the customer specifically asked for a manager..so it is so wrong to bring Joe Shmoe to talk in circles with her🙄

I work for target and know how frustrating this can get on both sides of the issue. hope this at least helps with why they asked for security.

    • @allisonvalera7018
      @allisonvalera7018 5 років тому +43

      also, to those complaining about the cashier and security. coupons are actually the security's job to look through. every time a cashier accepts a coupon they will place it in a drawer that security will check every day. they will weed out the fake coupons from the real ones. security is then able to pull up the transaction the fake coupons were used on and the employee that scanned the coupon and allowed it to be processed will have a meeting about coupons with the store manager and the security of the store. so don't blame the employee for following rules that they were taught so they don't lose their job.

    I used to work for Target Security and honestly I think he was “smirking” to avoid getting frustrated as the situation did get frustrating on your end and his. Yes, the first guy you spoke with should have just called a manager who is the LOD (leader/manager on duty) that the security officer called for at the end. Before anyone calls security, they should call the LOD first. That’s always happened during the time I worked for Target Security. Security should only be called if the LOD clearly sees there’s something suspicious going on or if a customer gets aggressive. Security/Asset Protection focuses on preventing loss to the company. That means a lot of things, and does involve coupons as well, but rarely do they ever get called for coupon verification. I worked at one of the busiest Targets and I’ve never been called for a coupon situation.

    Coupons are a form of tender. Target loses money for each coupon that was accepted outside the scope of the manufacturers policy. The manufacturer will not give Target the money for the coupon if Target wrongly accepts a coupon. Each store loses hundreds of dollars each day on coupons that were wrongly accepted by cashiers. This is why AP, security, is in charge of training cashiers on coupons and why the cashier called AP. As a fellow PoC I completely understand why you were threatened by security showing up, especially since AP started wearing “security uniforms”, but I promise you it had nothing to do with with a security threat. The guest services team member just called the person who was responsible for coupon training.

    There was zero reasons to call security regarding a coupon question!

    Places like Walmart if you just scan the coupon the computer will know if you have all the correct items to get the discount. If the coupon doesn't work that's when you look at the coupon to find out why. Its probably just poor training on their end.

    I worked at target for years, there is a huge issue with coupon fraud and further situations that I won’t say. In my store it was protocol to call security for any coupon purchases of multiples. We had the right to deny any coupon purchase if we wanted to, every store can have their own policy. My area we had a large issue with it so we did what we needed to to prevent it. Technically he is a manager. Leaders at target are managers.

    This is exactly the kind of attitude I was so glad to get away from when I moved away from New York, near the city. I left with the thought that I would rather spend the rest of my life searching for a better way of living rather than continuing to be subjected to this kind of attitude. Thank God people don't act this way where I live now.

    I had the same issues, I was so embarrassed. I don’t do deals at Target because multiple ones said the same thing the Target you went to said. If I did do a deal I would have different items and coupons, no duplicates. I’m glad you did this video.

    I am a cashier at target, and this is so weird how they handled it. The customer gives you their coupons, you scan them, and if it brings you back to the screen you were on before, it works and connects the coupon to the product. If it doesn’t work there is a screen that pops up and tells us that the coupon isn’t valid and it tells us to return the coupon to the customer. The coupons are always registered in the system so there’s no possible way a coupon “doesn’t work”

    I'm glad you kept your composure. They almost want you to act out so they can feel justified by calling the police and say that you are trespassing. 👩🏼‍⚕️👀 I'm going to tweet this and @ Target and maybe they will make sure their employees know the store's own policies.

    Why not just break up the transactions into individual purchases?

    • @kikigyrl
      @kikigyrl 6 років тому +28

      Well, that's the problem. Target has deals where if you purchase 4 items (usually on beauty, personal care, feminine care, health care items), you'll receive a $5 gift card. If you have a previous card, you can roll the previous to use on your purchase to receive said savings immediately. The coupons give an additional savings.

    • @kikigyrl
      @kikigyrl 6 років тому +24

      Example: 4 dove deodorants (2 men and 2 women) @ $4.99 each. $1.50 coupon off women's and $2.00 coupon off men's. Get $5 gift card when you purchase 4 of said or like items... $7 coupons and $5 gift card=$12 savings off $19.96= $7.96 total instead of $12.96. It may not seem like much but why give the company more of your money when you're the one working to earn it? 🤷🏾

Makes absolutely no sense that they would have someone from security come up to discuss coupons with a customer. You did an amazing job keeping your cool.

    The POPTART coupon explains it best and Yes all companys that give coupons need to have better or more specific verbiage on it as they do which will save alot of confusion!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your calls to get clarification from the different companies as well on their coupon wording. So it looks as if we truly have to carry a binder with all stores coupon polices at all times to not get caught off guard, but you're on it. Also that target search for clarification of what purchase means at the end of your video explained it all. Awesome job on keeping your cool, but calling security out on him smirking and them not sending a manager was well done bc that needed to be addressed and you have video to prove that he was smirking and not providing good customer service on a matter that became a Real Issue when they sent security and not a manager as requested!

  • @tidalboxer

    Oh. And calling security it is normal for coupon issues. They call security because they deal with theft through coupons a lot and want security there in case it is illegal. This situation happens SO much with coupons and gift cards. It’s definitely not the right approach, but maybe it explains it a little better.
    Also, the store manager rarely deals with any customer issues. Most of the time each area will have a manager that takes care of customer needs that can be from any department. This day it was security’s day to be the store manager. A different day you could’ve gotten Women’s Clothing Manager. They take turns managing the floor.

    • @_amandagarner_
      @_amandagarner_ 5 років тому +2

      Target does that a bit differently in regards to who is "manager" that day/at that specific time. He is a lead for security but when he called for LOD to come to register 1 he is referring to whoever is the main "manager" of the store at that moment since LOD stands for lead on duty. I agree with the fact that their security is trained to deal with things such as the coupons so her getting security shouldn't be a big deal. But since she asked for a manager they should have called up LOD to start with.

    Well I don't think I would have gone that far on the security issue but I think they called him to try to intimidate you into just giving up on trying to use multiple coupons. That is why I stopped using coupons but I'm going to start again and see if it works out better than in the past. Proud of you for standing up to them!
