I just realized that just a few hours ago, there were FOUR DeLorean in the 50's, there was the one in the mine, the one from the first movie, the one old biff took to go see young biff from the second film, and the one Marty took back from old biff in 2015 to return in 55 and fix time, that's four DeLorean in the same time set!!!!

Yeah, 1955 is honestly such a pivotal moment in Back to the Future history. Since Marty went there by accident, so many different events have occured because of the events of the 1st movie.

And I had just realized that 1985's Doc knew of Marty's first _and_ second trips to 1955 and his trips to 2015 and 1885 that night at the mall before the Libyans "killed" him!
Aaand, that DeLorean in the cave was already in that cave when Marty arrived in 1885 with his DeLorean. They could have used the fuel that was presumable left in the cave DeLorean to drive Marty's DeLorean home :P Or, assuming there was no fuel in the cave DeLorean left, at least salvage the fuel injection from it after they'd blown out the one in Marty's DeLorean. Doc in 1955 would have easily been able to replace it once he and Marty recovered the cave DeLorean.
I like that since Marty mysteriously came back, Doc no longer believes that Marty is a time traveler, so he calls him Future Boy again.
Oh man, that’s actually a fantastic explaination as to why he calls him that! I was always wondering why he was suddenly so doubtful.
I don’t think he doesn’t believe that Marty isn’t a time traveler anymore whatwith all the evidence that Marty showed him (video of himself as older, the JVC video camera, the DeLorean, the flux capacitor, knowledge of the lightning strike, etc), I think he just called him that because he was annoyed with him for coming back after he had expended so much effort to get him home.

You're right, Grif. Just as in Part 1, Marty had to tell the "flux capacitor" story to prove he knows Doc from 1985, in Part 3, he has to show Doc the letter, in his own handwriting, to prove the 1885 story. In both cases, Marty has to prove his case to make Doc stop calling him "Future Boy".
I just noticed Doc owns TWO television sets. Wow! He must be rich!
And you can see the clock 🕰 he was hanging in the bathroom on the wall,from where he slipped and hit his head.

The actor who plays Doc is so good, he really makes you believe he’s a different Doc with the small differences in opinion and the shock and curiosity of him learning of what has happened to him. A lot of people might hail Back To The Future as the “perfect script” but a perfect script couldn’t be performed without actors THIS good. Amazing
Christopher Lloyd is an amazing actor; I got to meet him in person a couple years ago. Hard to believe he plays a mad scientist, a cabby, a judge, and Uncle Fester and plays all of them so AMAZINGLY well

This is an underrated point and a strong actor like Lloyd would pick up immediately on the things you mentioned. There is a lot going through the heads of the two different Docs across time and each one feels very distinct - the 1985 Doc is very different from 1955 Doc.
The script is not perfect, although it contains a lot of bugs caused by time travel plot. But still good :D
Christopher Lloyd will forever be one of my favorite actors.. up there with Marlon Brando for sure..
Honestly, it IS kind of hard to believe that Japan went from its state in post WW2 to an insanely technologically advanced country before the Cold War was even over. Love that little nugget of Doc learning how the tides shift in just 30 years.
Also, in the 50s, Japanese electronics were already common in the US, and they were known for being cheap and poorly made.
In 1989-1990 Japan was threatening to tank the entire American economy by importing so much electronics. That’s how dominant they were at innovating electronics and making stuff. See Michael Crichton novel Rising Sun. Of course by mid 90’s USA had gotten a grip on the tech caught up and China began making all our stuff dirt cheap.
Japanese Culture, food and corporations were big in the post war until the 90s... Now it's the opposite or mixed now... Components stuff etc... and manufacturing is coming back to the west close to mid 2020s... I think..
The writer was brilliant to figure that made in japan line out and put it in the script.
Doc was just thinking about how the American Marines defeated and forced the military might of Japan to surrender.
4:10 here's a good paradox joke, Doc wants to know who is Einstein, which Marty reveals to be his 1985 dog (not Copernicus cause dog life spans are too short), so now he's annoyed with both the choice of name and that he has to name him Einstein to preserve the space time continuum.
I rationalize it by saying Coppernicus and Einstien are not the same dog.
@@jakeandzack5763I know, but what I'm getting at is rather than being able to name copernicus' successor something more historically profound such as plato or galileo, he has to name it einstein which is rather tacky for an esteem scientist like doc brown.

Here's another conundrum, Who named it Einstein? It was named like that because Marty told the Doc the name of the dog, which he only knew because that's the name the Doc gave it, who named it to not alter time continuum after Marty told him the name.

In the German version it's translated as _„Marty, geh' bitte von meinem Grab runter!“_ …
Thus, Doc literally is saying: _“Marty, please get off my grave!”_
This combined with Christopher Lloyd's facial expression, it's even more hilarious and a highly ironic line and circular pun than the original line!
Since whilst the English version is 'nothing special' (anyone could have said that), in German you would probably expect that line from a ghost at best, if anything. ♥
I like to think this series of events is what changed Doc Brown's mind to go and read the letter Marty had written him in the first movie.

@@maloperverso8118 It was only windy and raining before the lightning bolt. Afterward, there was a gust of wind, then it was calm. As mentioned just above, the letter was put in his pocket. It could have fallen out of his pocket when he fell down those two times (after sliding down the wire, and when he was nearly electrocuted.) Aside from that, it had a good chance of not getting lost.

Christopher Lloyd really does fantastically at portraying the 1955 Doc. He FEELS younger, somehow his eyes have more shine in them. It's not just the makeup.
The Doc Brown in 1955 is closer in age to Christopher Llyod in 1989 than the Doc Brown in 1985.
The cinematography and staging in these films is SO underrated. The drama develops beyond the dialogue in each scene, it's almost like a stage play. For example, the way you see Marty arise from the chair while Doc is dictating...the reactions on each of their faces...Doc playing the organ to match his horror...and the 4K really shows off the detail throughout.
It is and will always functionally be 480p no matter how deceptively titled this video clip is ....

The sheer terror in Marty's voice as he screams for Doc after finding the tombstone really sells the scene. Marty has had to deal with his best friend dying or nearly dying so many times over the past few days--getting shot by terrorists, 1955-Doc possibly falling off the clocktower/struck by lighting, getting shot by terrorists again, 1985-Doc struck by lighting/disappearing, and now getting shot by Mad Dog. It's been a rough week.

That's a hell of a lot to go through in that time.
@@SpaceCase1701it checks out though. We meet him on day one in Doc's Garage, and he travels back to 1955 that night, presumably arriving at about the same local time he left. He then spends the next week (2-8) in 1955 before coming back home for nine hours and then traveling ahead and spending another 12 hours or so in 2015, bringing us to about nine days. We then go to late night 1985b, and we'll be generous and say they got everything done there in another 8 or 9 hours, since we never see the sun in that reality. The next six hours are the end of BTTF2, which makes it ten days. Two or three more to make it back to 1885 and then a week there, and yeah, just under three weeks.
1955 Doc is actually my favorite. A weather experiment. That is exactly what it was too. Beautiful

I actually love this movie and even manages to wrap things up in a nice way.

Grown on me too. I was disappointed at first as I loved the future, but after watching III so many times, its excellent.
i dont feel like people act that way. is a great movie, is good that is not set in 1955 and gives some more time to doc. the west setting is also very interesting and the movie itself is full of details of the old hill valley that you can catch that reference 1955 and 1985 hill valley. plus the plot itself is solid. i cant say which of the 3 is my favourite since i like the three equally.

8:30: My mom told me in theaters when this scene came up, everyone Gasped including her. Doc is always her favorite character and seeing his grave like that just broke her a bit.
I was too young to see that film on theaters at the time. But I think that it could have been mind blowing. Omg seeing Delorean coming from a truck in first film. I remember seeing Back to the future video cassette case on video rental shelf. I was asking my father what is this. We didn't rent it. We definitely should have. 😊
Man, Christopher Lloyd's mannerisms are just so awesome! He's the best mad scientist ever depicted on film - look at his face expression at 1:26 - priceless! 😂👌
His faces and mannerisms are truly a show apart! Part of what made the character so timeless!
Besides that, I (and probably many others) couldn't stop laughing at his expression when the toy car, on fire, drove into a bunch of paint cans in the 1st movie. Mind, I first saw it when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I kept having the laserdisc rewound, so I could see it over and over.
(Laserdisc is an older home movie format. Introduced in the late 70s, it was higher quality than VHS and Betamax. Not as high definition as DVD or Blu Ray, but it's Analog, whereas DVDs and Blu Ray are Digital. The picture quality feels noticeably gentler on your eyes, somehow. Also, you can go through a movie frame-by-frame with Laserdiscs. DVDs & Blu Rays don't have that, IIRC.)

I just realized that "HERE LIES" at the top of the tombstone is displayed in Helvetica. That very popular typeface wasn't invented until 1957.
One of my favorite things about the internet is that I get to learn crazy things like this from people who know about crazy things like this.

nothing strange since time travel is possible in the movie. 1985 doc could easily bring it to the XIX century.
In fact - in reality, if the time travel were, is or will be ever possible, we would already know how to do it since beginning of civilization!
What’s truly amazing about the opening part of this scene is that it explains to everyone what happened in the last two films in a way that gets any new viewers caught up, but it does so in a manner that doesn’t feel forced.
Dude, I went and saw 3 in theaters in 1990 and had not seen part 2. Don't ask why. I was tripping. But yes that explanation helped tremendously. It was like oh well I missed 2 but this movie is about to be good. I so enjoyed it. Not until the internet did I find out 3 wasn't as good as 2 or 1. To me it's all one big movie. I would go over my mom's friend's house for holidays. They'd put me in a room with Nintendo or BTTF. I didn't even care about the Nintendo. Instead I'd watch BTTF Trilogy. I was weird like that, I guess.

Doc playing the horror theme music by sitting on the piano may be one of my favourite gags in these movies
8:20 How different things would have been, and not in a good way, if little Copernicus hadn't sensed something wrong and located Doc's grave! Marty would have just gone back to 1985, and the timeline in which Doc meets a tragic, pointless end less than a week after sending the letter would have been final. That little dog is truly the unsung hero of Part III.

This is likely why he figured “what the hell”. With the extreme info dump he was given after the events of BttF 1, he likely figured reading the letter wouldn’t endanger anything anymore.

I wonder how much of Doc’s freak outs were in the script and how much Lloyd made up as he went along. His facial expressions are just perfect.
0:01 Funfact: The "Howdy Doody" show is and of the pioneers of children tv shows and one of the first shows that aired on NBC.
But only in America. Here in the UK, we had a television children's show called "For the Children" that started in 1937 (was broadcasted live by the BBC) and that's 10 years BEFORE Howdy Doody. So its us brits who pioneered children's television from that aspect because we did it first.

I also noticed he was drying the letter and his socks by the fire, which he must have started himself. I’ll bet he guessed the key was under the doormat, just like in the first movie. So many things you don’t catch or think of until much later.
I always wondered how Marty felt when he went back to school the following Monday, after essentially having 3 weeks off and being the only one knowing of the other timelines
@GaunletofDestruction Also remember that his original family no longer exists. His father is now a successful author, rather than a beaten down office drone, his mother is no longer semi-alcoholic, his elder brother is a sucessful business executive rather than a fast food worker, and dedicated enough to go in on a Saturday, and his sister is clearly better off too, though we don't get specifics beyond her suddenly having multiple boyfriends..
It also begs the question, where is the Marty of this new timeline? The version of Marty who lived with this new family in the 'better' timeline, and probably was doing better in school with a more supportive family behind him and higher expectations based on the rest of his family. He still befriended Doc Brown and was with him at Lone Pine Mall, and took off in the Delorean with the terrorists after him, as original timeline Marty watched.
That Marty vanished into time, but is not the one that came back. Now old timeline Marty will have to work to fill in the place left by his new timeline counterpart, and deal with the fact that the people he knew are gone.
I really love the scene where Marty says All best thing are made in Japan and docs goes like UNBELIEVABLE 😂😂😂 hilarious

I've heard that for 1955, Doc's comment was accurate. Japan's exported item quality _was_ junky, it _was_ known as junk. I'm not the most knowledgeable about this, though.

However, in addition to that, the joke plays on the fact that approximately only 10 years previously, the US dropped the only atomic bombs used in warfare on two Japanese cities. Japan was not thought of positively by the US for a while due to the fighting that had just occurred between the two nations.
Also, in 1953, the US was fighting the Korean War. I know Japan and Korea are two different countries, but I'm just saying that average American sentiment to East Asia was not very good at this time.
Goods from Japan in the 1950's were mostly junk, like goods from China now. Japanese goods didn't get good until the 70's, and by the 80's their cars and electronics were the envy of the rest of the world (Sony electronics, Toyota and Honda cars).

What I liked about it, is that every thing Doc said, mirrored what the audience would react to if they saw Part III after Part I.
Ever go back and watch something you enjoyed as a kid, only to find that it wasn't as great as you remembered?
My experience re-watching these films is exactly the opposite.
Yes this trilogy has definitely improved with aging and added life experience. So many details that i missed watching it as a kid and not having seen our own timeline's 2015 yet

The part where Doc slams the door in Marty's face, the way Doc is shaking his head in disbelief is so funny and well done. When Marty says, "you sent me a letter" and BAM shows Doc the letter the way Doc looks at it.... Soooo funny and well done. I love these movies.

When I saw this scene the first time, I thought this was the first movie. I was 4 years old and didn't payed much attention to the story, I paid more attention to the DeLorean. I thought that was how they found the Time Machine in general.

I never appreciated how good the editing is in these films. Every new scene here captures your attention with something interesting right at the beginning. Doc's giant mouth in a magnifying glass, an explosion, a cute dog wearing a miner's helmet, Doc's giant eye in a magnifying glass, and a close up of a lever pull starting a mechanism.
Christopher Lloyd is a legend. He is the top of his craft, which is acting. He really sells the viewer on the "two Docs." I really feel the difference in these two Docs, which are the same character, just at different times!! It's crazy.
I don't know if it's younger Doc's relationship with Marty feeling more "new" and "fresh" (to Doc), or if it's 1985 Doc (older Doc) seeming more slow, wise, contemplative, less energetic and lacking the pizzazz that younger Doc has, but somehow, he really makes it known this is the same man, but he is also different, separated by 30 years of life.
Agreed. Younger Doc has more energy, virility, more passion, more emotion. We met the older doc first so this one feels much younger without three decades of ups and downs and life.
This trilogy (in my opinion) stands the test of time and is my favorite series of movies in history. I could watch these movies on loop for years and they'd never get old.
I just love how Marty is just waking up in the background while Doc is completely unaware of his presence and gets scared by him. ANnd, with Doc making that noise once he finishes his statement and him going into the bathroom.
Don't know how, but the 4K and the lighting in Doc's living room is so relaxing.

Old media can have brilliant resolution too! Couple of years ago I developed pictures taken by my grandfather over 60 years ago and they have so much detail I can make big posters out of them.

Excellent quality film stock really holds up when stored/archived in the right conditions and looks even better when it's cleaned up and restored. This 4k intro REALLY pops and looks absolutely amazing.

what isn't really touched on, but is implied by 50s Doc's excitement to be in the old West and the way he dresses Marty, is the duo's different views of the Old West. Doc has seen Atomic Age westerns. He's seen a cinematized caricature of the Old West as a land of honor where the good guy always wins (as dictated by film code of the time). Meanwhile, Marty knows later westerns, which still may not have been accurate, persay, but show a more brutal version of the West.
It's an interesting thought, and there's not really much further I can take it, but it does really remind us of Doc's character, and whole reason for inventing the time machine. The first appearance of 80's Doc in part 3 has him as a badass. He built the time machine to learn about the past, and we see that he has taken that knowledge and put it to use.
I love the gun Doc builds. There isn't another gun like that back then. It's hilarious that Doc goes back and doesn't fit in. He's actually altering history, worst than Marty did with his parents' first meeting.
When Doc gets struck by lightning in 1955, Clayton Ravine immediately fades and becomes Shonash Revine. When Marty looks like he died in the ravine as the train falls in, Shonash is renamed in Clint Eastwood's honor.
Which is funny given that doc would’ve certainly met people who actually lived on the old west.
Doc was probably born in the late 1910’s to early 1920’s given he’s already a grown adult (maybe early to mid 30’s) in 1955 and an old man (around mid 60’s) in 1985
When he was a kid on the late 20’s and 30’s there would still be a lot of people around in Hill Valley that were around in the old west days, hell, there’s a chance some of Hill Valley’s 1885 inhabitants would still be alive during Doc’s childhood.
I love that Doc and Marty can get the car out of the mine without help from anybody else, and that Doc probably put it in there by himself in 1885.
Of course, he built the entire time machine alone, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
well i mean.. when the delorean is struck by lightning and sent to 1885, it still had tires. So dock very well could have pushed it or hitched a horse on it to tow it into the mine in neutral. Then putting it on blocks is just a simple matter or levering it. The tires would have rightly deteriorated beyond use over 70 years, but then getting it out of the mine is just a simple matter of pulling it out with the winch. Which honestly wouldn't have even been necessary had they mounted new tires while it was on blocks.
Such a beautifully written opening sequence: a recap for the uninitiated, and plenty of references to the earlier films for fans, mixed with straight up comedy bits, like the organ sequence. Amazing.
I was lucky to grow up in the 80s and saw all three as they came out. This new version is crystal clear. Looks phenomenal.

I never realised it but this is one of the greatest openings to a movie of all time. What followed wasn’t quite that, but really the set up here is amazing. Doc Brown becoming addicted to knowing about his future is a little bit like the allure of the one ring or the dark side. Lloyd’s acting here is absolutely stellar! Every scene I kept rewinding and watching over and over again to marvel at his acting. I love the way how he genuinely looks fascinated in the letter he’s receiving from his future self, and then can’t hide his hurt pride at being called a “future counterpart” by none other than himself! Watch the acting here. The cuts and editing too are just beautiful. Even the sound design on the hoverboard is perfect. Five stars.

Years ago, watching this as a kid/teen/young adult, it was just a scene that introduced and enhanced the story. Now, as a middle aged man, it's just beautiful and touching. The chemistry between both Marty & Doc, as well as between M. J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd is what makes this piece of art to live forever.
Every single time I see any Back to the Future movie. I'm reminded of my childhood. No other movie can bring back so many amazing memories.

That tombstone is in a remarkably well condition even after 70 years with little to no care. All of the tombstones are well preserved. It's almost as if they were props or something.
In a deleted scene, Mayor Red Thomas issued an OFFICIAL Hill Valley law that was passed that states that ALL tombstones be cleaned and polished at ALL times to preserve Hill Valley history...

I know we see two instances of Marty in the same place in the second film, but Marty is constantly the one doing the traveling in time. In this instance, we technically see two instances of DOC: one standing next to Marty, and one buried six feet beneath him. Kinda dark.
there were three different Docs in 1955 at one point, the 1985 version, the 1955 version and the dead 1885 version.

No wonder it's a classic, the cinematography, Doc going on an ultimate recollection on his experiments,
Marty getting up and casually grabbing something to show him, while being so used to his behavior

It plays like a play. Like Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, it's a classic because it's practically perfect.
Everything from 1.24 to 2.12 is one uninterrupted take. The acting is so wonderful. Doc's refusal to believe Marty is there and the way he just slams the door to the bathroom. This followed by quite a complex explanation that Michael J Fox has to give outside the door. I wonder how many takes they had to do to get it right.
Just noticed that Marty had dried out the note by the fire after the rainy night prior. This looks fantastic. Definitely going to have to pick it up.

The Look, the tone in his voice, his body movements...Make this one of Christopher Lloyd’s Best performances. --As a Screenwriter now, I wanted to put that tone in a moment of exasperation, but how do you even describe that perfectly, and I doubt any actress for this particular character could do it as effectively as Chris. So I chose to re-write that idea.
8:08 Marty forgot that Doc tore up that letter to warn him about being shot by terrorists. Last thing you'd want to do is say to him not to tape that letter together.

Now with 4K I can see Michael's haircut was so much cooler in part 1 with the shorter back. This longer hair makes him look like 10 years older.

but Doc returns from 2015 to 1985 after learning how bad things turn out for Marty’s family to change them.
What amazes me is how Doc, the doc who traveled back to 1885, was able to move and conceal a car without anyone's notice or help and that it remained hidden for 70 years. To add to the amazement, the car apparently needed little to no restoration for the internal combustion engine side of it since it just seemed like they threw a little gas in it and it was ready to ready to roll after fixing the time circuits. While I'm sure that parts to make replacement time circuits were available, I doubt piston rings, oil pumps, fuel pumps, and carbs were available for Delorean's in the 50's.

I know that in the aviation industry, there is a way to preserve internal engine parts for a long time and I would imagine you could do something similar with a cars engine The hoses and flexible parts may have been harder to save but I’m sure Doc was able to procure or fabricate things like that.

I freaking LOVE LOVE LOVE how detailed the hoverboard concept is. Doc stepped on it and stumbles backward and his upward swing of the leg launches it at Marty who catches it super easily. The way he tosses it aside without a care, instinctively knowing that it would hover where it was (assuming the magnets were facing downward) shows that Marty really got the hang of how it worked in a relatively short time. What I mean is, when Doc tripped over it and sent it at him, Marty didn’t duck or try to dodge it- it was like Marty was too smooth and cool for that. Idk man this movie will forever be apart of my life.
For those of you wondering about what time it is, when Doc removes the map to look at it, there appears to be an alarm clock underneath it. The alarm clock looks like it is set at 7:55 am. However, when Marty tells Doc that Einstein is the name of his dog, there looks like there is a small clock behind Marty's head and it is set to 8:15. Either way, the time they read the letter would agree with the book, that says they had a breakfast and probably freshened up before Doc read the letter.
Or maybe Doc already started his "clocks set 20 minutes back" experiment from the opening of the first movie, in 1955, and the 8:15 clock is for controll.
@@Verebazs I read the book and it said that between the time Marty presented the letter to Doc and the time Doc read it, they freshened up and had breakfast, and stuff like that. This would explain why during the reading of the letter, they are wearing their shoes.
What would have been funny is if they did freshen up, Marty could have taken a shower and asked Doc where the Coast is, and Doc says, "down on the other end of town by the lighthouse." Or Marty could have asked Doc if he has any "Zest" and Doc could have said, "Marty, I am not that kind of person". This, of course, referring to the different brands of soap in the 1980's.
