You're simply the best astronomy youtuber there is. No fancy CGI, no verbosity, no crap...just beautifully presented content of the most mysterious and wonderful things in existence
David, you are so brilliant, and smart, and good at this type of illustration . Thank you sir.... I don't think you realize how important these type videos will be to future viewers.
I wish he had been my teacher back in my school years. He teaches so well. His break downs of the formulas is so clear to understand, well paced and well illustrated. He deserves much more recognition for his hard work. This can't be easy, even for a brilliant man such as him to make.
This is a fix for so many things for me. I am so thankful for having stumbled on a random video of his all this time ago. The are a lot of very good and brilliant illustrators here on youtube(thankfully) But none of them has the same magic he has. I feel bad for those (too many I know) that have stumbled on here and not given him time to start his magic before judging this for being a little slow paced. but that is a big part of his magic Shamefully, I was almost among those,my first time here. But something about his warm, kind and friendly manner made me want to stay just a few minuets longer and maybe get to know this sweet man talking to me in his beautiful and sunny backyard :) thank you David for being who you are
Dave (if I may be so bold) I love your videos. I always wanted to be an astronomer but my parents felt that wasn’t the most stable or lucrative career. So after the Army I became an IT guy early. So now my free time is almost always astronomy based. Binging on your videos always lifts me out of a funk. Thank you.
I've been watching UA-cam extensively since 10 years. If I'd have to pick a #1 creator, it would be you without blinking. Such a great learning experience, perfectly narrated, beautiful images, perfect addition of classical music, etc. Hat off and applause to you sir.
Anybody looked into how the 'image' has been created? Like who made it? How the source data was processed and by whom? What the source data is? How much data was needed? And so on....
@@oddvardmyrnes9040 If the "image" you're referring to is the black 🕳 hole then yes, of course it's been looked into so to say. The scientists discussed it thoroughly. All data was stored onto a drive about the size of a small briefcase, but much, much bulkier. There was so much data (weeks and months worth of observational recordings from several land telescopes 📡 from quite literally around the world 🌎🌍🌏) it could not be sent over the internet nor computers. They then had to mail/send over all the 'cases' so that it could be loaded and ran through a supercomputer. Members of the team then met to discuss their findings to see if they were indeed ready for release to the public. As far as all the minute details of how exactly they got a picture, well they've gone over that also. You simply have to watch! Fascinating stuff!
David, an Excellent presentation of 2019 Astronomy events and main focus on EHT's Black hole image! You are great scientist and an excellent story teller! Much respect!
As someone who loves cosmology and physics I love your videos. I'm 48 and I've been into cosmology for the last 20 years. I know most of the stuff you put in your videos( though I do not understand the math) but I always learn details that I did not know. And your videos are done so well even if you don't know anything about astronomy or cosmology it would be so easy for a beginner to start learning. Thank you very much David.
I hardly comment on any video here on UA-cam. But this one I had to comment. This channel is one of the gems of UA-cam that I found out by accident. Sir you are amazing. I am also on the same path as you were 40 years ago at the start of your career in IT. Hope I will be at least half as good and dedicated as you are now, after my retirement :).
Mr. Butler, An appreciation note. Astronomy is a very special science, ont that do require, and at same time do impose, a sizeable amount of humility on the scientists. Astronomy is the immensity of the created Universe at everyone's fingertips. With your astronomy channel you are sharing a large amount of referenced and up to date science - with all the "lovers of scientific knowledge". Here came my point. It is obvious that your gargantuan work on this channel - that we all enjoy, is born not only out of a desire of sharing your vast knowledge on the matter, but from a sheer amount of generosity, a human side of yourself that transpires from all your lectures, making them a pleasure to watch; and that I highly appreciate every time. David I have watched and listened to all of ur fantastic sorry FANTASTIC videos and I'm saddened to see the few thumbs down and as somebody else mentioned the amount of work that went into these videos is astonishing and we all appreciate it. Nothing but positive remarks from myself and please keep them coming!!??
Just wanted to say, you sir are a fucking genius and a TREMENDOUS communicator. I have watched all sorts of lectures on youtube from big name rockstar astrophysicists and i often have to rewatch it 3 times before i achieve the bliss of comprehension. But with your videos it is often instant! I am so very sad you dont have more subscribers !
In x-ray crystallography we apply the inverse problem to calculate the electron density of the atoms that scatter and diffract probe xrays to give the observed diffraction patterns as a function of angle of the crystals. The very small and the very large are united by physics and mathematics. Mathematics, perhaps the greatest human tool whose peer is music.
YES! I looked forward to this. The way you explain things, matched with the graphics, always makes for a really good watching experience. Peace to you!

Thank you for taking the time to explain what is going on in the sky for people like me! I enjoy your videos very much plus your choices of classical music❣️
PhD Butler, your videos have become a cherished resource and remain in constant rotation around my household. Thank you for providing such superb content.
Your illustrations are very informative, very interesting. This is the 2nd or 3rd viewing of your video posts😁 I love mother nature, and to me this is science on a scale I cannot comprehend. You resparked my interest in the Cosmos! I am amazed always seeing such beautiful creations because they are perfect in my eyes. Your a great teacher!
David Butler, thank you for making all the videos you have shared with us. You make the world a better place and you have created some of my favorite videos of all time! I am of course subscribed with notifications enabled and thumbs up! Thank you, Ernie in Pennsylvania
Thanks for another fascinating video! I enjoy how you do not shy away from the math used to calculate the distances and velocities to these various objects in our universe. It's important to learn not only what we know, but also how we know what we know.
Thank you for the M87 jet visibility explanation. I had assumed the reverse jet was not visible due to angle of view plus clutter. Relativistic beaming is a much more interesting basis
