You have to use mud. Mud works like soul sand where it's technically not a full block (you drop down a little when standing on it), so hoppers can actually pick up items through it.

Nope because observers work per sugarcane you need one per plant

@@snhazzy3325not really, you could put only one observer facing one sugar cane and still sending a signal to all pistons, so when every time that specific sugar grows all of them will break

Yes, cause the hoppers will pick it up, it’s a ‘thinner’ block, so if it’s another block, the hoppers will not pick em up.

Just build the same thing on top but without the hoppers and the top sugarcane will fall through the mud into the bottom hoppers

no items are go through hopper in mud block. Collect dirt block and right click water bottle in it . it will turn into mud easy.
