Love the way that Jackman's character knows how dangerous Chappie can be, but engages him anyway. The soldier through and through. This is an awesome movie on so many levels.
If I had a nickel for every time I've seen Hugh Jackman in a movie about robots that can fight, id have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
The movie's fatal flaw is the two Die Antwoord musicians cosplay-fantasizing themselves as actual gangsters for this movie. Ninja has zero charisma for the screen (or in general), and Yolandi isn't much better. Any movie with two unlikeable lead characters is going to struggle with audiences.
This movie is underrated, from it's visual effects/details to the nature vs nurture conversation. A lot can be learned from Chappie when viewed in the right context
I don’t think this movie is underrated at all. People hated it for the characters around chappie because they were annoying as hell. Which I don’t blame them, I like the movie personally but I understand the people that don’t.
I love how this final scene Chappie uses everything he's learned up to that point being a tough gangster, but also not using guns and at the same time not going on a murderous rampage and forgiving his worst enemy when he could have easily gone on a spree. Such a shame they never made a second movie. But then again it might have been hard to.
I love this, Chappie saying stuff my son would say to a bully, but with the unbreakable strength of a machine. Jackman showing the character of mankind, for good or bad, giving 100% even though he's outmatched. Beautiful stuff.
I will NEVER understand why this movie didn't get great reviews. This was a hilarious movie, with great effects, good characters, good performances. The plot mightve been a little bit jumbled but my god this movie was funny. This movie and District 9 are underrated masterpieces in my eyes. Although I do know people are far more appreciative of D9
This movie honestly Did a really good job at making the “protagonist” a hero on the wrong side. The character Jackman plays isn’t necessarily bad but in the perspective of who Chappie is with hes the antagonist, because let’s be honest, Chappie’s “parents” aren’t good people, While Chappie is just innocent minded caught in the middle of all this. At least that’s what I got out of it
Yeah the humans on both sides are assholes. Chappie's new family manipulated him while Jackman is trying to destroy him and is again a scheming asshole who not only sabotages the police robots but is trying to supplant them with basically his own personal army.
Chappie was amazing…. Unfortunately some movies don’t get the credit they deserve, by today’s standards of movies.. Chappie is a masterpiece Lol. Yes.. that’s how shit I think we have it now.
This is a HIGHLY underrated movie IMO, just like District 9 was. Loved Chappie, loved Die Antwoord basically playing themselves in this! Just a great watch!

One detail I never noticed is how when Deon is transferred into the robot his movements and mannerisms are more quick, more fluid and human like compared to Chappie's more stiff movement.
I always read it as his movements being unrestrained. Like your brain accounts for the weight of your limbs but his new body is weighted differently, but he's still capable of quick precise movements, as opposed to Chappie who learned to walk as a robot and opts for a more stable gait.
@@eanna3781 Was probably just a better built robot lol, i think chappie has more potential although its really hard to understand the implications of a human literally effectively becoming an AI, if it was possible then all AI would be considered souls and then we'd be able to create life without need for sex, kind of wild implication
Chappie was a completely different movie. It talked about so many things, like District 9, such as discrimination, government corruption, predatorial corporatism and even stuff like learning to love. And instead of making a tragic ending, it gives a hopeful yet uncertain ending. It's such a powerful statement, to give the viewer something outside the box, not a great orchestral happily ever after, but a pseudo-realistic, humane finish.

I didn’t like the movie very much. Wouldn’t mind a sequel to it. But besides the actors, the acting, setting. And maybe the dialogue ish. Didn’t like the rest
Really underappreciated science fiction movie. A lot of quirky characters and a bit of a rushed and improbable premise but the end where humanity discovers immortality is within reach and simultaneously watching an uploaded human standing before a humanized AI both recognizing each other as the same is literally mind blowing. A serious sequel with James Cameron or Ridley Scott would really be something to see.
I always remember my machine shop teacher saying "Remember, a machine won't stop because your screaming, it doesn't care your bleeding, you show it respect because it doesn't respect you."
"This machine does not know the difference between metal and flesh, nor does it care." That's the thing about subsentient, inanimate machines: they aren't alive. We personify them because the human pack bonding instinct is hyperactive, but ultimately it's just a block of metal doing exactly what you tell it to. If it hurts you, it's because you or someone else fucked up.
The ending was so odd, normally a movie dealing with consciousness and putting the mind in a machine goes for something like it’s a dream and you can’t cheat death, but having the characters literally do that fills the mind with questions and it becomes more memorable instead of just a sad ending of them dying or one dying and the other moving on.
I could imagine in their universe they would find some way to Cybernetically enhance the human brain just so consciousness can be transferred and removed
No, his consousness was only copied, he actually died. If you copy a file on your computer and move it to a new computer, that doesn't mean you've moved the file, it only means you made a clone.
@@hhubhj44 No it was a TRANSFER, not a copy and paste. Although later Chappie does save his "mommy" by *copying* her mind using a backup to a new robot body.
@@hhubhj44 I was just thinking this, the robot "Maker" isn't really him. It's just a robot with a copied memory to act like the human it once was, the human died and is gone forever. So whether or not the new consciousness should be considered a person or not, even though it's a copy, that's the real question.
Lol imagine having to tell people you got into a fight with a robot, not much of a fight but a fight and he utterly smashed you into the hospital…. It would almost be worth it
That wrench through in the beginning is f*ing brutal. I got hit by a similar sized wrench that someone had tossed to be, and I fumbled the catch and it hit me in the chest, leaving a pretty nasty bruise. And that was from a friendly “here, catch” so if someone actually whipped one at you ☠️☠️

While the message of this movie is pretty obvious, a human being can be more Savage and inhuman than a robot can, this scene was still insanely cathartic. The sudden intense violence that happened when Hugh Jackman's character used the moose to attack the gang was shocking and threw me off. Seeing chappie get his revenge is awesome.
There is a line in Metal Gear Rising where Bladewolf (a robot) is explaining to the main character about how robots do not typically get used in acts of terror by terrorist groups because robots generally lack the capacity for brutality. Here we have Chappie not only savagely beating up Vincent but doing it in a way to make him suffer: Chappie is far more human than robot, even if he is purely synthetic.
That depends on what your definitions of savage and inhuman are, and lead to some rather philosophical questions. On the one hand, a robot wouldn't be vengeful or sadistic, if it would have to kill it would do so cleanly, efficiently and with purpose instead of savouring a human's fear or pain. On the other hand, pleading with a robot would be utterly useless precisely for those same reasons, while with a human you still have the possibility of connecting on a personal level, gaining sympathy, and being spared. A robot would never do that.

Is it their personality, their mental and emotional attributes, or is it strictly physical? Perhaps the original flesh is gone, perhaps the original person is gone, but who that person was is now in something else, and it can simply be them. The only one who wouldn't see a difference is the original, but that doesn't much matter now if they're gone, does it?
I love this film. Everyone out in it is out to _use_ Chappie for themselves, to advance careers, get rich, or, in a more morally gray 'use' of chappie, and less inherently evil, Dev Patel's "Deon" character wants to use AI for the good of everyone, and for him to be the one to have done it, it doesn't seem selfish, but it is, quietly, as he does it in _his_ name, not the company's, which causes the conflict with a jealous co-worker. And Chappie has to navigate all of that all while not understanding any of it, and just understanding the words used by those around him to discern their motives. Hugh Jackman's character really didn't use their words well.
Letting them live and forgving them doesn't mean they'll change. This idea that someone can kill someone you love and the victims are supposed to just let it go. Forgiveness is for fools and criminals will definitely use it to theur advantage. They laugh at people like you because they know they've gotten away with it. They also see an opportunity to try it again. The difference here is criminals will continue to rob and kill. The victims ot victim's family will only do it once. This is why the myth of Jesus is pathetic. Jesus died in vain thinking his sacrifice will change people. When in fact nothing changed. You have to make people change. Some freedoms and people have to be sacrificed for the greater good. Not every life is precious. Most are pointless. They're envious, resentment and blame everyone and everything except themselves. Criminals will never stop unless there is deadly consequences. No more compassion and if their family, friends or other dipshits get in the way. They must share the same fate. I'm now talking about a system to prevent and deal with criminals. The pacifist way does work and believing ever life matters is ridiculous. If they don't contribute to society without envy, resentment and complaining then their life Is forfeit. Order matter not lives or freedom. Want to stop crime? Viciously crack down in it as well as envy and resentment.
He's not necessarily a "bad" guy in the movie, though. At least in my opinion. The way the director seems to work is really good one shots. He did District 9, which is a great movie. Another movie of his would be great. All seem to be a darker near future.
Loved it. We need more films that paint AI in such a way. Too many pessimists just outright denying such a thing could work, completely ignoring how selfishness is a human flaw, while also assuming that only a human could actually understand what we want. AI could be sentient and human and benevolent, or it could be intelligent and completely human serving and never give a squat about its own identity. It can go many ways, and defaulting to Skynet is a very silly assumption.
We were going to get a chappie trilogy. There were two more movies planned if this one did well enough, but it was seen as a failure. Its such a disappointment. Chappie is probably one of the best movies about synthetic consciousness and nature vs nurture ever made. Perhaps if the marketing team did a better job at showing chappies growing personality, this would have done better.
That does suck Chappie definitely deserved it hopefully it will be made later since we live in an era where everything gets sequels and prequels and remakes
"I forgive you bad man." *bad man's arm and leg are bending at unnatural angles* But still. Chappie could have punched his head clean off his body. Considerable restraint.
He only wanted to teach him a lesson thats why he beat him up so that he cant fight or hurt anyone anymore. Basically how Batman fights he should do that to Joker. Joker would be alive but cant stab or kill someone anymore. I dont see why we do this with the most dangerous Killers in the world. There are Countries where they break out or get let out and continue with their Shit. Thats why make them Cripples i would say is not a bad idea.
This movie was wild but the thing that freaks me out the most is how oddly frightening the character of Chappie actually is. It's the overall design but the thing that separates this sentient robot from all the others is the choice to make him not just....Kinda human or rather.... Sentient but still making decisions like a robot would. It's the choice to make him straight up human but with a robotic body. Even the choice to continue to wear the chain, it shows that he does thing purely out of some personal desire. There's no logic in it like you might see in other films where a robot gains sentience. Usually the bot would retain that line of computer logic but not Chappie. Dude is human and makes decisions like a human would. It's also like 3:30 AM where I am and I've just drank like 2 cups of coffee while taking a break from writing so maybe I'm just rolling with the caffeine at this point and it just seems more important than it actually is lol

@@Phoenix8492 yeah this movie contradicted itself and lost its own message
That depends on what your definitions of savage and inhuman are, and lead to some rather philosophical questions. On the one hand, a robot wouldn't be vengeful or sadistic, if it would have to kill it would do so cleanly, efficiently and with purpose instead of savouring a human's fear or pain. On the other hand, pleading with a robot would be utterly useless precisely for those same reasons, while with a human you still have the possibility of connecting on a personal level, gaining sympathy, and being spared. 1:32 lmao omfg the way the camera cuts to his body just completely mangled after chappie says that line 😂
This was one hell of a movie
Was just about to head to bed when I saw this gemstone from years ago. I loved Chappie. Really wished there was a sequel I wanna see more of him. First movie that made me feel like robots....could live fr. Not just code programming them. Real AI and good ones at that. This is still one of my favorite movies of all time. Peace everybody 😌
The way the director seems to work is really good one shots. He did District 9, which is a great movie. Another movie of his would be great. All seem to be a darker near future.
"*Laughs in District 9*"
Isn't dustrict 9 the sequel?
@@gamerplays5131 Don't think so. No robots in D 9. The tech is all alien.
Yeah, the trailers made it seem pretty weak overall.
That does suck Chappie definitely deserved it hopefully it will be made later since we live in an era where everything gets sequels and prequels and remakes
Still waiting for that second district 9 movie (probably won’t ever get it) that movie was great and I needa know what happens with wikus!

*bad man's arm and leg are bending at unnatural angles*
But still. Chappie could have punched his head clean off his body. Considerable restraint.
What is the movie name
@@tariqscandar4176 Chappie (2015)
@@tariqscandar4176 "Bad Man"
He only wanted to teach him a lesson thats why he beat him up so that he cant fight or hurt anyone anymore.

1:36 Chappie just leaving Wolverine on the ground as the Jordan symbol 😂
Chappie is one of those movies that can be talked about and watched over again and you just continue to love it.
@@matthewgutierrez3988 Consciousness is limited for humans because if we were anymore aware than we already are it would be somewhat disastrous. Just think of someone that's on the far side of the spectrum and now imagine every human being like that. Our species would die off within a generation. Sensory overload is just no bueno. Unless of course you have someone or something to guide you into a hype fixation, but at that point they are robots! Full circle I guess.
@@matthewgutierrez3988 We're material beings we don't have souls or any other part of us that can escape our physical bodies.
At best dumping all of your brain's data into a machine creates a very realistic simulation of a person, yet it will never be the original.
He didn't become a robot, he programmed a robot to think it's a person. And its impossible to guarantee that robot will act as the original would and won't diverge somehow.
I like that he's shouting 'No violence!' and the like while beating the crap out of the other guy.
He is driving his lesson home hard: "I am only being violent because you were. I would not be violent if you weren't."
And everyone heard him yelling it, when they calm down half of them are going to realize Chappie wasn't berserk, he was only after that one guy, for attacking someone else.
Well done, Chappie. Well played.
No one cares people shutdown robots n one day 300 homicides because of him but he walks free still with broken body or get good treatment
But government only made robots n Deon as a villian

Love the fact that you added the end of the movie, the part where Deon's conscience gets transferred, really nice.
Hugh Jackman is an awesome actor. His reaction to having his arm broken by Chappie was brilliant.
Chappie went from learning to paint, to learning how to become immortal
That's basically AI, in the future if we have things like these we will have AI that can paint and talk and read then in a year they will be able to solve everything, we can move between realities and basically everything you can think of, but if we let it happen too soon they can take over but that's just my thoughts on the whole AI thing
did u know that babys on fire thats a song the guy and girl are die antwoord in the movie lol
@@kingviper3444 It's not just your thoughts, all the major players in AI development are saying the same. The one really crappy thing is so far, every semi-intelligent learning AI we've created has turned against us within days. Just look at google's attempts. Frankly, it's something we shouldn't even be trying at this point
@@tanepukenga1421 tbh I'd just let one go wild, after we have a good one, the competition would send them both to higher levels until one wins. Like one of those jars with the venomous bugs, but it's a 50/50 on whether humanity gets killed or if it becomes some all powerful race
@@sentane8031 All or nothing gambit, huh? Lets hope luck is with us again on this one
Its was this moment where both the audience and Moore were soberly reminded that Chappie's body was in fact made to shrug off small arms and manhandle people like they're dolls
