There was no need for interference from North Western Europeans the divide between East Asians, South East Asians, And South Asians happened way before they slumped in the central org yeah.

Having race in I/C shows our heritage. In SG we identify by our race but once abroad we identify being Singaporeans first.
That true. When we are overseas we identified ourselves as Singaporean. Indication of race is plus one easier for our heritage purpose and easier to do population census.
As indication Malay on ic is very important as mostly Malay is associate of being Muslim incase of emergency or death safe the hustle of checking. Etc.
I have never really liked it, as it is not really a box I found myself and my background fitting into. I am multi racial. To have just my paternal lineage recognised is not right, to me. I introduce myself as Eurasian, as ultimately that is what I am. If I was fully Chinese or Indian or Malay, it is there. Simple. I have lived without race being an identifying marker, for more than 20 years now, living overseas. I am not ethnically put into a box that I don’t fit in. I l love Portuguese food, but go crazy for duck rice, wonton noodles and dry mee pok. I don’t look like my ID card says I should. People often mistake me for being something else.

The race does not matter but knowing someone's race cann be useful info, to be used for positive purposes.

@@JP-sm4cs At work, knowing a colleague who is indian for instance, at my workplace, we try to have a balance of different races, because of the need to work on PH. We dont want too many chinese wanting PH on CNY, or having an indian colleague, priority for approving leave goes to the Indian for Leave approval for not scheduled to work on a Deepavali.

Also for negative purposes. I think the negative outweighs the positive overall. Especially in The West.

In my opinion, there is no need to classify us according to our races. Races are defined based on one's physical appearance and but in Singapore, it is based on the nationalities of our ancestors (with the exception of Malay). We cannot assume that all people with the same nationality have the same type of looks. That's racism. In addition, you also have people of different nationalities and look similar, such as Japanese and Koreans. It seems pretty obvious to many Singaporeans that "Chinese" and "Indian" refer to ethnicity and not nationality, hence they are always referred to as such. However if we look at those classified under 'Others', you have Pakistani, Japanese, American, Australian, British, etc. If all of them were to be continuously identified in that manner, how can this be helpful in social integration?
On averages though there are clear physical and facial alternatives between East Asians, South East Asians, and even more so with South Asians yeah.
Still don't understand why sg job interview forms asking for race ? That should be removed. Does race matters in a work place?

Kenneth lol. I think all races sure have the hardworking and lazy people. In my old workplace many chinese and indian are more slackers than malay. Bosses are both indian and chinese also. More than 70% of the indian workers are quite fragile. Today do tomorrow pain. Half of the chinese love pushing their work to others and angkat bola alot. But still there also nice and hardworking chinese and indian also. So don't steteotype so much bro.
The race on the IC is most probably for administrative reasons by the government. Like for use with the hdb quota which states the proportions of each race allowed in the hdb block
Seems when it applies to certain jobs, occupations, schools, colleges, occupational centers, universities, dormitories, and academies it does to some aspects
My race on my Singaporean passport is African Arabic / Middle Eastern and my religion is Islam. It’s the first time I had to fill in my race and religion on a passport but I think it’s a good thing so people can not confuse me. Because I have different passports and my nationality is not the same and I don’t like to be confused. So I think it’s a good thing that I can post my religion and race too.

Does race matter? It depends. If they wanna segregate and exclude people by race, it's not helpful at all. And after all they all live in Singapore and they are Singaporean citizens. That's the most prior fact. But at the same time Singapore has gotten its frame by pioneers. It's a well known fact that 75% of Singaporeans have Chinese root. And probably 9 to 10% are from South India. Even Malays, some has Javanese, Buginese, Arab and jawi peranakan roots. Singapore is a one nation but it's more meaningful bcuz the diversity is respected. I am not Singaporean i'm actually a Korean. But I have two close Singaporean friends. I even had a chance to meet one guy's family. And they were all chinese singaporeans. I was not used to multicultural society bcuz my country is monocultural. I even thought every Singaporeans have chinese root. I found it was wrong but i have met their family. One of the most chinese family i have ever met. Even they talked in hokien language which i've never heard in my country before. They welcomed me as a guest from far country. We had a chance to talk about history of chinese settlers and lee kwan yew's rule. Especially his grandparents still mattered of their chinese culture and pride. They told me it's part of their spirit. They said feeling proud of and preserving their identity and hating other culture are different. They can respect other culture by acknowledging its diversity. I was so impressed. And I could finally understand what singapore is :)
The Government has different funding schemes like CDAC and Mendaki. Generally Mendaki gives better fundings to Malays. As long as such things exists, races still need to be distinguished. A minister in Jun 2021 also just said that statistics need to be captured by race so that the Government could see how best they could help the people of specific groups. Also the Government also said that we don't have a Malay President for a long time and installed one, though technically is an Indian.
It's the same like Malaysia. Mahathir is a Kerala Indian. The Government and his supporters consider him as Malay.
It is high time the race identity field on the NRIC is removed. With more than 20% of relationships here being "inter-racial"/inter-ethnic, it is fast becoming irrelevant.
Many singapore chinese malay indian men look good in 90s. Sg was the hub of asia with MTV and western magazines influence.
Why do Malaysia and Singapore still have Tamil and Mandarin as official languages ? They have been there for 3 generations since independence so surely they should have become homogeneous and have Malay (Malaysia) or English (Singapore) as the only language?

In my opinion, I feel that it's about identification. Say if a country only has one race, then there's no problem with just stating a person's nationality. In the context of Singapore, we are made up of multiple races beyond the main four. For example, if John Doe committed a crime, there could be thousands of John Doe who are Singaporeans. So what differentiates the real John Doe from the other John Does? The race could be one of the factors.

Hmmm... That's why I mentioned that race could be one of the factors to help nab criminals. I'm not very sure about the other races listed on NRICs besides the main four. I've heard of Javanese. Hence, what's to be listed on the NRIC for John Doe of a mixed race will depend on what his parents choose.
I'm not against removing race identification. If one day, the government decides to scrap it, I'm fine with it because, to be honest, how many times do we look at our NRIC in our lifetime? Haha!
I'm just sharing that it could help in terms of providing leads and identifying criminals. :)

I got confused with Singaporeans too. I thought most of the residents are immigrants. When I checked history they are mostly from Malay race like us Filipinos

It is not important to indicate your race in the nric . Today as ID is personal due to PDPA , the only time you would need to present it is when you are at the police station ( rarely) and when you collect your covid Token at the Community Centre. 😆. lol.

I love their curry and prata. In Singapore, due to CECA, we find naturalised Indian talents in the banking and IT sectors. They contribute to our economy.
The Chinese here are known for their thrift and industry. They are less than boisterous like the Indians and Eurasians. Sometimes the Chinese can be misunderstood for being competitive and for submitting to the fear of missing out on good things. The impression created may be that the Chinese are money faced. In Hainanese, this supposed love for money is described as behaving such : " yio jib, mak Kim kim" The children are hot housed for the school exams on the first day of school. They assimilated well to the recent covid circuit breaker as home study is second nature to Chinese kids. They are already programmed to stay at home to study even from pre covid years. So it made little difference to them staying home or not.
The Eurasians are music talented, eloquent and entertaining. They dominate our entertainment and mass media industry like working as DJ, dancers and news readers. They are fluent in speech and suave in behaviour. I observed most are witty and more risk taking than the average Joe in the street. In flora biology, it's called hybrid vigour. They make friends easily and thrive with all races.
So , let's celebrate Singapore s unique potpourri of cultures and culinary offerings. They make us broad minded and patient with others from different back grounds.

Javanese, Boyanese, Bugis, Minang are dialects that comes under Malay race in SG. Just like Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, etc. are dialects under Chinese.
The Javanese are not the only sub-Malay tribe under the Malay race living in Singapore. There are also Pulau Ujong Malays, Orang Laut Malays, Orang Selat Malays, who are the original ppls of Singapore. You also have Semenanjung Malays ipwhich inckude Johor Malay, Pahang Malay, Terengganu Malay, Kelantan Malay, Petani Malay, Setul Malay and so on

I guess having a race in your IC defines you as a Singaporean. Our identity is perceived by nationality(Singaporean) and ethnicity(CMIO) due to the mix of multi-culturalism in our society. Singapore wants to retain our asian values and culture. As Singapore advances to a global city, the CMIO model will be removed. In the short term, there will be no changes because we still wanna be friends with China.
