    Mark, when cleaning the metal surface prior to applying the sound deadening material, recommend 3M prep solvent 70. This is professional grade surface prep and I can personally attest that it works beautifully. Likewise, gently heating the sound deadening material with a blow dryer while applying helps you mold it into place easier. Nice work on the videos.

    6lbs each roll, 18lbs total of sound deadening. I highly doubt anyone is going to notice a difference in fuel economy and performance.

      I wonder how much it'd weigh to do the whole car...I want to do this in my civic now. Even if it's 8 times the amount he used, that's still only 200 pounds.

    • @hellabrokeracing1337
      @hellabrokeracing1337 6 років тому

      bobwinslow shouldnt take more than 6 rolls with a civic and that's going hard on it so basically 36 pounds but unless your full racecar mode and fully gutted why would it matter hell ide even consider using on a gutted car to reduce road and motor noise especially with how loud civics can get

  • @CriticalTechReviews
    @CriticalTechReviews 6 років тому +14

    Hey Mark, I'd love to see you use a LOT of this to treat every surface of a loud car (like say, a 1990's Honda Civic) into a very quiet car, maybe with a DB comparison when the car's at speed? I want to see if it will get me to Lexus level quiet without Lexus overall weight. If it took eight times this amount of material, it'd still only be 200 pounds extra, or near enough stock weight not to care. This could be a game changer for tuners who daily their cars. Thanks for all the helpful videos!

      The Civic (or other economy cars) don't have the right type of glass for low noise transmission. A lot of sound comes through the glass. :)

      Mass Loaded Vinyl. some cars use some form of it stock. many cars at least on the firewall. it's even used in the home behind drywall and under floors. most often in home theater applications, or anywhere isolation from outside noise is wanted.

    • @chaddonal4331
      @chaddonal4331 5 років тому +1

      Where do you use Mass Loaded Vinyl? In this case, would you glue it in the trunk in the same way he's doing the SoundSkins? And what thickness and weight? 1/4", 1lb?

    I have 2003 Nissan Almera, and I have done the whole trunk, front doors and some plastic panels with some butyl/aluminium sheets. Definently better sound and much less road noise. Also no noticable difference on fuel economy

    You have mentioned in previous videos, as well in this one, the good points of Soundskins. Have you used other brands of sound deadening? What is the difference? Since I retired, my audio budget has been dramatically restricted and I don't want to spend the extra money if the difference isn't noticeable. Not sure you can make a video like that due to sponsorship restrictions. ;-) Thanks for all the great videos. You are the #1 channel for car stereo installation. I recommend you often to others. Keep up the good work!

    Your videos are awesome. If there is one thing i miss you to go a bit deeper with, it is the noise insulation. A video where you describe how to make the car as quiet as possible. If i have understood it right, the best way is to 1) add a layer of butyl, 2) add a layer of closed cell foam and 3) add a layer of mass loaded vinyl. Is that right?

    I did massive amounts of sound treatment years back in my Prius (because they produce hella road noise) and the weight made little difference. The noise was reduced but def not eliminated. Was kinda disappointing actually. I do sound dampening in all my cars but will not go as crazy with it as I did on my old prius.

    Most folks need to understand that the mileage really isn't going to be noticeably different once you've added the sound treatment material and sound hardware; it's going to, at best, be tenths to hundredths of a mile per gallon. And, with a lot of cars these days, you can easily regain that lost mileage by retuning the engine if it's really going to be that much of an issue.

    That 5.3 doesnt get much for fuel economy too begin with. I havent noticed a change in mine since i started adding audio... "accessories"
    One thing though. If you dont have displacement on demand programmed out. Do it. Gets rid of the helicopter noise when in 4cyl mode and helps with oil consumption.

    Would it be safe to sound treat the rubber flap and plastic surround in the trunk over by the bumper? I have seen about how it's to prevent the back window from braking when closing the doors or trunk. I have also seen that it's for preventing your ears from pooping when closing the trunk lid or car doors. Does anyone know if I do block the flaps would it cause windows shattering or my ears to pop? I ask because if have two 10's in my trunk with 500 watts total to both subs,they're downfirirng in a sealed box. I tell you this because it's part of another question. That question is there's already a lot of bass pressure inside the car so would the ear popping or window shattering be a moot point because of all the bass pressure in the trunk? I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu classic. Mid sized sedan. Has anyone covered up these inside rubber/plastic bumper flaps without any of the above concerns happening? If so how long has it been since you have done this? I don't know a lot about soundwaves or science. Please help.

    Quick question, I've installed the foil close cell foam type mat in my car and have been told by someone that the foil is going to cause rust from condensation build up.
    I quote...

      The stuff at home depot you are talking about is probably roof liner. Which has a track record for being stank, it's tar like, and adhesion not lasting very long after a while on a lot of vehicle surfaces when it gets hot, coupled with constant vibrations. Sure, it works for the time being, but after a while can be problematic.

    It would be nice to see a comparison between this and some of the other products. I put a set of headphones inside a helmet for my motorcycle commuting and I used.....wait for it.... Craft foam from Wal-Mart that has adhesive on one side. Cuz I'm broke now that I have a family. I got 6 colors of notebook paper sized adhesive back foam pieces for less than 6-7 dollars. Of course I (having a background in upholstery) made a cover that zips around my neck to keep bugs and stuff out from getting drawn into the face. But I can enjoy the commute now as opposed to hearing all the turbulent air at high pressure levels.
    Someone had given me some dynomat (after I finished my project)....but I would hate to find the results being the same (or worse) plus the dynomat at least has lead in it. And although I don't plan on licking it...it is a bit closer to the breathing in than some may consider healthy. Thoughts?

    Wrap your brain around the fact that 11 square feet of this material costs $99.00!

      yeah not worth it imo except in areas where rattling is extreme

      I did this exact same thing using Noico 80 mil sound deadener 36 sq ft for $60 shipped and I added the Noico 150 mil 36 sq ft red CCF on top for $50 to give it that foam layer on top. I bought a roller fo $8. Total investment was $118 and this allowed for me to fully treat my trunk, rear deck, trunk lid, and side doors.

      @@FiLL580 in my experience I haven't had any issues with smell whatsoever. I am using both the sound deadener and the closed cell form. I stay in Florida and it's very tropical with a lot of hot days.
      My car is always exposed to the sun and the outside elements.

      @@darrylpolite8722 How is the closed cell foam working out? Any difference in cabin temperature? Is it worth spending the money on? I'm in orlando, and my poor little Yaris A/C struggles to keep the heat out in traffic.

    So my question is.. I have seen you have amplifiers and that stuff near your reserve so.. Is it dangerous have amplifiers and stuff near lpg tank like instead of reserve ?

    What about the rear deck do you treat it from the bottom or the top or does it even matter?

    Do you have any videos installing systems on boats?

    Would be interesting to have a race class with the best sounds full install with 1 or 2 sub's and be the lightest and the fastest.

    I'm curious, do bed liners like Line X work well for sound deadening, or do you like of need the multiple layers of products like an acoustic mat?

    • @jasonwitkop6446
      @jasonwitkop6446 5 років тому

      I have my entire truck bedlined and I can honestly tell you that I didnt notice the slightest bit of difference in road noise etc. So Id assume you probably need more substantial material.

    I love great sound, but if i was going build a fast car i would still use a sound damping and some kind of good sound, like just mids and highs... no heavy subs, maybe small shallow mount subs like jl audio has.
