Thank you so much for this video and the thorough straight-to-the-point explanation. Truly grateful! I've wasted hours watching meaningless intros and unnecessary fillers just for them to get to the point.
Great videos on the Zoom H1n but you forgot to mention 1 important thing I believe. There are 2 ways of recording when connecting the H1n to a camera. You can simply use the H1n as a mic that feeds directly to the camera or you can also press record on the H1n and get a redundant recording to the H1n SD card in addition to the recording in the camera.
Have you tried both, I am considering getting an H1n and wondering if the line out has the same quality as the recorded audio (obviously the camera becomes the recorder at that point) but I am just curious if the line out is the same quality as the internal recording.
Hi Jeremy. This is my take on the H1n after using 1 for about 6 months. It is a very versatile and easy to use digital recorder but I find it extremely sensitive to any surrounding noise like wind, white noise, or any shake or movement. The recording on the camera coming from the line out of the H1n is fine but I think that the internal recording from the H1n SD card sounds better. However, I also use a Rode Wireless Go that I connect to my camera and personally the camera recording from the Rode sounds better. It is cleaner and requires less processing in post than the recording from the H1n. 1 set up I haven’t tried yet is connecting the Rode Wireless receiver to the line in of the H1n and then connecting the line out of the H1n to the camera and see what that sounds like. My next experiment.
Julian, while this does work fine and thanks for the info about getting a -6dB tone, there is one problem from the Zoom into my camera. The output from the Zoom headphone is noisy. So you get the mic noise on the input and the noisy output from the Zoom itself which makes for fairly noisy stereo recordings. Sorry, I know this is a fairly old video now, but I suspect some kind of impedance adapter might help between the recorder output and the camera input to try and reduce this noise.
I never had a go with it Greg. Mainly because I don’t use it this way. My guess is that it’s just an electrical mismatch with my camera. To be honest, even using a headphone into the Zoom is noisy. It does tend to hiss. It’s on the output because that hiss isn’t on the recordings. Just the output so it’s coming from the headphone amp section.
@@iancraig Thanks, Ian. This is very helpful. I was hoping to use the H1n on-camera for family and ambience outdoor shots, but I am experiencing the same issues.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. 😊 I am planning to buy the Zoom H1N for recording my DJ mixes, music production etc, but I also wondered if I could use it on my DSLR as well. Thanks. 😊
Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Hi Julian. May I firstly congratulate you on the quality of your videos which have been very useful to an inexperienced sound person. My question is could you use the H1 (or higher zoom models) as a live streaming mic which connects directly to a laptop? I'm looking to improve the audio on my UA-cam videos but want a flexible solution where I can record sound files directly for voice overs or out and about through a lav mic as well as hopefully using it as an external microphone on my laptop for live stream Q and A sessions with OBS Studio. So basically, could I use a TRS to TRS lead from the Zoom H1 output to the microphone input on my laptop for this purpose?
Glad you like my videos!!! If you only want to have a mic to plug straight into your PC for live streaming, I would recommend something like the Samson Q2u. In my opinion, this will give you an even better audio quality than the H1n. But if you like the versatility of the H1n and want to connect a lavalier, it is still a good choice. And yes, you can use the H1n to live stream. You can simply connect it to the PC via USB and you can use it as an audio interface. So, the sound of the H1n could be used as a mic in OBS.
Assuming it's a linear scale in db, since there's 7 bars between 12 and 0, then each bar represents an interval of 1.7 db. On the other hand, there's 14 bars between 40 and 12, which means the interval would calculate to be (40 - 12) / 14 = 2 db. So -6 db would be in the third or fourth bar to the left of the 0 bar give or take.
Hi, thx eversomuch for the really helpful tut, my only problem left is now, I can´t find any software (if possible freeware), which would help me detect, how many db my soundfile has. Any advise please?
there in no -6 tone in zoom h1 .. but you can make a -6 tone wave file in premiere pro and copy the file to zoom h1 and play the audio file to calibrate the sound Between the sound recorder and the camera
Thanks a lot man..really helpful. Just one query, do one need to do this calibration whenever the camera or recorder is switched on or is this needs to be done just once and the settings will remain same unless changed manually. Thanks

Hey, if I understand you correctly, you want to know if you have to press the record button on the recorder to record audio with the camera. Not necessarily. As soon as you connect the H1n to the camera and turn on the H1n the audio of the H1n is recorded by the camera. Hey, that's not a silly question! To answer it: Yes, you do not have to clap or anything like that anymore. The audio of the H1n is going trough the cable directly into the camera and is recorded simultaniously with the video. So, the audio is already in the video file and perfectly synced. :)

i tried it yesterday on my lumix g9, it works, but somehow i had a strong noise background does that has to do with the top dial standing to high on the zoom h1n? how to find the best settings
No. But having the card and using the record button will create a higher quality version of the audio that you can use in post. Also the H1 N comes equipped with a tone recording to easily sync the two if you edit on software that does not include auto sync.
Dang, totally forgot about that. But you´re right, in most cases it will sound considerably better than the in-camera microphones. You also get a true stereo recording, which not every camera provides. Additionally the usability is higher, because you do not have to dive into menus to change your audio gain. So, I think besides the upgrade in audio quality there are quite a few more reasons you might use the H1n on top of a camera. Thank you for your input!

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I followed everything but the audio I then recorded was very quiet, peaking at around -45. I can Sorry, I'm a complete beginner so - is this normal? Should I just then change the volume or something within Premiere? I recorded two people speaking. Also - why is sound in minus Db when recording anyway? Many thanks!
Hey, I guess the audio is so low, because you did not turn the gain (rotary knob on top of H1n) to a proper value. Please watch my beginner's guide, there I explain how to record audio correctly: ua-cam.com/video/2trnJiUFMcs/v-deo.html If you have already recorded something and you have to use the recording, you will have to amplify the recording in premiere. Of course, the next time you should record your audio with proper levels to begin with :) The dB scale is negative, because there is a maximum level how loud audio can get (0dBFS). You always have to stay below that level, and because of that the dBs are negative.
All I did was set the H1n to auto level off and use the gain to check the max db of your audio source before recording. He was saying make sure it does not exceed -6db, but also not so low it doesn't pick up any audio. The other fiddling about is not necessary. You can just plug it in and it works. If your audio source is too loud or quiet, then adjust recording level in canon's settings. For reference my recording level doing a vlog indoors was set to -10db and my gain on the nob was around 7.
What patch cable is right for Zoom H1 connecting directly to Camera as an external mic??? TRS patch cable or TRRS??? No one tells you the right cable to use. I want to connect Zoom H1 directly to my Vixia 800 camcorder as an external mic.
Thanks for your video. Quick question: When you record the -6dB signal, at which level should your gain be? 0? above 5.5 (according to your other video about the H1n's gain levels)? Does it matter at all? In your video you're around 8.
Thank you very much. The H1n is definitely an awesome device. I'd also like to thanks you for your videos, I've learned so much from them. Thanks for your time.
Hello! My Panasonic G7 doesn't allow audio level reduction below -12db and as a result there is a lot of hiss / high noise floor. Is a line-to-mic attenuator cable the only solution? Thanks!
newbie question it seems like the sound from the mic is very soft when I play it on my computer I don't have an editing software yet but as someone mentioned down below volume 64 is -6 on a canon 80D. If I was understanding correctly I just need to hook it to line out on the zoom mic on the camera, do your steps lower volume in on the camera set it one up from the last setting, and set it to the zoom volume to 64 of hit stop button on the zoom and record on the camera yes?
That's correct. After that you have to set your gain with the dial, so that the levels on the H1n hit about -12 dB. Then it should sound pretty good. If you want to go louder you can turn in the limiter and set your gain dial on the H1n so that your levels hit about -6 dB. Cheers!
Do you have any hissing or humming when using the zoom h1n’s microphone? I notice when I use it, there’s quite a large humming noise, but when I use a lav there’s no humming noise. Thanks.
Hey Christopher, I have not experienced any hissing or humming with my H1n. It might be a possibility that this noise is coming from the image stabilizer on your lens. Turn it off and see if this eliminates the noise.
Hey, die Schockmount ist die hier: www.rode.com/accessories/sm3 Ich glaube, dass die nicht mehr hergestellt wird. Vielleicht mal auf ebay oder kleinanzeigen gucken ob du da was gebrauchtes findest.
I got this option by using a trr split cable. So one track goes go the earphone for monitor and another one goes to the camera. Only thing is that will be a mono track on your camera.

Hi, I have the Zoom H1. Can this be used with an iPhone for video recordings instead of a lavalier mic? Or would you recommend using both, with the H1 as an interface. I know the H5 can be used as an interface, but can the H1 do the same thing? Thanks!
H1 can be connect by usb cable and usb lightning camera adapter. And yes it can be used as audio interface. If you want to use it wirelessly you can record the audio and then sync it manually.
May I ask If I plug in an external shotgun mic into H1n for recording purpose (without using any cameras ) . Can I still use it`s Low cut filter , limiter functions? Thanks! you
I think the H1n is good, when you are just starting out. If you want to get serious about audio I recommend to buy an XLR mic like the Rode NTG2 and a Zoom H5. Both setups are if course completely different price ranges.
No, you can simply memorise the volume settings on the camera and H1n and this way you can simply recall the settings. So, you only have to do this procedure once. Cheers!
Hey, any 3.5mm to 3.5mm male cable will work. I recommend something like this: www.amazon.com/Valley-Enterprises%C2%AE-3-5mm-Right-Angle/dp/B004LGNB0A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1537976718&sr=8-3&keywords=3.5mm+cable+6+inch

Hey, noise can have many sources. The limiter for example creates some noise on the H1n. So if you don't need it, turn it off. To get the cleanest sound try to get the H1n as close to your audio source as possible. As small amount of noise is usually pretty normal with the H1n.
Hey, it is a Rode SM3: www.rode.com/accessories/sm3 I don't think they are produced anymore. You could check Amazon ore Ebay maybe someone is selling it.
Very likely there is no big difference in the audio quality between recording internaly with the H1n or in the camera. But when you record in the H1n you will have to sync the audio in post production which can be very time consuming. I don't think that's worth it.
If you want to record with the H1n it needs to have a micro SD card inside it. If you only want to route the audio to the camera, it should work without the micro SD card.
Yes, this would work with a camcorder the same way. One thing to keep in mind: Depending on the quality of the built-in microphones of the camcorder you might not gain much. Using the H1n is recommended, when you have very poor microphones in your camera because the H1n can record a better sound. But if the mics in the camcorder are already pretty good, the H1n might not improve the sound much more.
Was just about to buy an external mic and thought "what if I can use my h1n for that", let's search on youtube!

Hey, I guess the audio is so low, because you did not turn the gain (rotary knob on top of H1n) to a proper value. Please watch my beginner's guide, there I explain how to record audio correctly: ua-cam.com/video/2trnJiUFMcs/v-deo.html
If you have already recorded something and you have to use the recording, you will have to amplify the recording in premiere. Of course, the next time you should record your audio with proper levels to begin with :)
The dB scale is negative, because there is a maximum level how loud audio can get (0dBFS).
Hey Daniel, the gain level does not matter. Regardless what you set your gain to the tone will always be at -6dB.
Thanks!
Do you get better audio from this or a Rode mic??
I didn't understand the part where you set the "tone playing" option. What exactly is it for?
Vídeo and áudio sync
newbie question it seems like the sound from the mic is very soft when I play it on my computer I don't have an editing software yet but as someone mentioned down below volume 64 is -6 on a canon 80D.
Cheers!
@@JulianKrause great thank you
Thank you so much for this video...
Maybe a dumb question but why even bother connecting the H1n to camera audio in? Why not just import the audio and video clips and sync in editor?
how's the sound quality difference?
When you record do you also have to hit the record button on the zoom or does the camera just automatically transfer the sound?
It will do automatically. Because H1n is constantly sending signal over the audio output.
@@RafaelJaques Does the zoom need an sd card or just the camera's sd card is fine?
@@jjthapyro4130 I believe that you don't need the SD card on the recorder. You may use it as a microphone instead of recording device.
@@RafaelJaques Thanks! 👍
You're so Awesome!
Il y a compression audio par le boitier en MP4 il me semble ?
buen dia, disculpa como se llama el soporte que utilizas para poner el zoom h1n en la zapata fria de la camara
Hi sir, can it work with smartphone as well? Thank you
do you have audio sample? when you use this on your camera?
so after calibrating the audio level, it's just plug and play to use it as a mic?
Do you have to press record on both? Or? Does it automatically record for your camera?
You don't have to press record. That's the best part!
I try to connect the zoom but there are hissing sound that pretty disturbing. Any suggestion? I set my gain on 5
Can you post the name of the RODE mic holder with cold shoe ? Thanks !
Did you find it?
Thank you
Hy Thanks for the Video, i cant find the Schockmount you use on this Video?? Do you have link for me...i am from Germany....Best Regards...
Hey, die Schockmount ist die hier: www.rode.com/accessories/sm3
Ich glaube, dass die nicht mehr hergestellt wird. Vielleicht mal auf ebay oder kleinanzeigen gucken ob du da was gebrauchtes findest.
Thanks man, I was just wondering if I can connect this recorder to camer before I buy it.
Can you also plug in headphones to the h1n to monitor?
same doubt here
I got this option by using a trr split cable. So one track goes go the earphone for monitor and another one goes to the camera. Only thing is that will be a mono track on your camera.
That's the cable I used: www.amazon.co.uk/Splitter-Sockets-Plated-iPhone-Moulded/dp/B005ZPIXWW/ref=asc_df_B005ZPIXWW/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=294797661583&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3714603779779916773&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=20479&hvtargid=pla-785807961306&psc=1
Can someone tell me, will this pick up the af noise of the lens? Thanks
Hi,
I have the Zoom H1.
Do you here lens auto focus with this microphone?
please do for sony models
Where did you get that mic stand holder!!!!!! I need one badly!
It is the original Rode SM3. I think it is discontinued. Maybe you can find one used. Cheers!
Would not the output line signal be too strong for a dslr mic input level through a normal trs cable without attenuation ??
What you call that cable ?? Cable name ?
Can someone put a link to the cable please preferably UK Amazon
May I ask If I plug in an external shotgun mic into H1n for recording purpose (without using any cameras ) . Can I still use it`s Low cut filter , limiter functions? Thanks! you
Yes, all the options you can set for the internal mics works for externally connected mics as well.
Vielen Dank!
which one is better for beginner filmmaker, zoom h1n or zoom h5?
I think the H1n is good, when you are just starting out. If you want to get serious about audio I recommend to buy an XLR mic like the Rode NTG2 and a Zoom H5. Both setups are if course completely different price ranges.
@@JulianKrause thank you Julian
@@JulianKrausewhat do you think about i buy h1n and rode ntg-2 with 3.5mm to xlr adapter, is it good option for beginner filmmaker?
So do you have to set it up like this with your camera every time that you use it?
No, you can simply memorise the volume settings on the camera and H1n and this way you can simply recall the settings. So, you only have to do this procedure once. Cheers!
Just b4 some days I got my Zoom h1n handy recorder but didn't get that cable... plz let me know which cable should I use to connect to my canon 77d..
Hey, any 3.5mm to 3.5mm male cable will work. I recommend something like this: www.amazon.com/Valley-Enterprises%C2%AE-3-5mm-Right-Angle/dp/B004LGNB0A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1537976718&sr=8-3&keywords=3.5mm+cable+6+inch
@@JulianKrause Thank you for ur reply..
so do we have to press rec button zoom h1 too?? or just the camera? will it sync ?
No need to press the rec button. If you connect the H1n to your camera the audio will be directly recorded in the camera with the video.
@@JulianKrause thank you man ! you really helped me a lot .great vid !
If I was to then plug a lav mic into this, would it still work fine?
Yes, that works
Can I use Tascam DR05 the old version with camera as Zoom H1n?
Yes, the Tascam DR05 has a headphone output which you can use to feed audio into your camera, just like the H1n.
@@JulianKrause
Thanks for your answer.
Is the audio of Tascam DR05 synced with camera or it should be synced in video editor?
Can I use Tascam DR05 as my computer's mic, since it's not a USB interface?
Can I use
Which mount did you actually use?
Ah - Rhode SM3. :)
hy i m french i need to the reference of the device rode to put the zoom H1under a camera
I know this video is 6 years old, but I hope somebody can help me. I'm following all the instructions perfectly, but when I get to the section at 1:35 my camera does not pick up ANY audio from the mic. The cables connecting the H1n to my SL3 250d look the same as the ones in this video, but the mix is not detected.
Does anyone have an idea about what I might be doing wrong? Thanks!
whenever i'm talking and there is no background music playing i hear this static white noise. but when i hear other people in the videos who advertise this microphone i don't hear the static white noise. what am i doing wrong. i've tried every combination on setting i can think of and just can't et it right. do i just have my volume set too high and that is a normal side effect of it?
Hey, noise can have many sources. The limiter for example creates some noise on the H1n. So if you don't need it, turn it off. To get the cleanest sound try to get the H1n as close to your audio source as possible. As small amount of noise is usually pretty normal with the H1n.
Hey. give a link to the spider Rode
Hey, it is a Rode SM3: www.rode.com/accessories/sm3
I don't think they are produced anymore. You could check Amazon ore Ebay maybe someone is selling it.
If you connect zoom h1 with camera, you dont need to sync it later in post?
Yes, that is correct. The audio of the H1n will be recorded straight into your camera and it is recorded into the video file.
what is the adapter called for connecting to the shoe?
Rode SM3
@@JulianKrause link amazon?
@@williansantos7990 It's an old item and not produced anymore. Maybe you can find one use.
When i click the stop button as well as the play button it just starts recording?
is Zoom H1 compatible with lumix g7?
Would it be better to just record directly onto the h1?
Very likely there is no big difference in the audio quality between recording internaly with the H1n or in the camera. But when you record in the H1n you will have to sync the audio in post production which can be very time consuming. I don't think that's worth it.
@@JulianKrause Can you record in-camera and on the H1N at the same time so you get both recordings?
Does the h1n needs to be with the micro sd card?
If you want to record with the H1n it needs to have a micro SD card inside it. If you only want to route the audio to the camera, it should work without the micro SD card.
Julian Krause does the sounds from h1n store in the video in the camera?
Is it applicable to videocam/camcorder?
Yes, this would work with a camcorder the same way. One thing to keep in mind: Depending on the quality of the built-in microphones of the camcorder you might not gain much. Using the H1n is recommended, when you have very poor microphones in your camera because the H1n can record a better sound. But if the mics in the camcorder are already pretty good, the H1n might not improve the sound much more.
What audio setting for sony a6400
Nice video, but may I recommend using a special -35dB attenuator cable, otherwise it will sound very noisy on your camera.
Hello!
Why you mention specifically 35db? because my local dude insists on 20db? just truing to figure out
@@VadimOm Ideally you try a few different cables levels. -25, and -35 are common. -20db might be just fine. It's not a one solution fits all.
