02/07/23: OMG, I've been working on this tote bag today and came to the hard spot, right where the seam is, you know, on the sides right where the heaviest bulk of denim fabric, interfacing and batting meet. OMG, this makes for over-the-top bulky, so I HAD to stop and look for assistance this time because my machine just wouldn't let me get over the hump without shutting down. Well, let me express that the nail file worked like a charm, just tried it and I nearly screamed with joy! I only wish I had known about this tip long ago. You have no idea what I've had to do to make it work so that the continuity of stitches went across from end to end, a pain in the butt! Anyway, the nail file is my new and best friend. Thank you so much!
I'm almost 70 years old and man could I have used this tip when all my boys were growing up and I was constantly working on their jeans. Now I can use this on my Granddaughters' jeans and on drapes I'm altering for my sun room, making bags etc. this is genius, thank you.
I just discovered you, so please know that your generous helpfulness and clarity are still going strong! I am hemming jeans for myself and family members and wished I discovered this simple free trick earlier in my sewing attempts making face masks for the pandemic. It’s worked well on one pair of jeans so far. It’s helping achieve a professional look without paying a cost equivalent to the price of the garment, while making it seem like I didn’t break a sweat.
Thank you so much, after so many years of sewing and fighting with my machine over thick seams I am very grateful to learn this very simple tip!!! This is a huge help!
thank you somuch, I am not sure if you are still making video's, but I will take this advise going forward, and just like that 70 year old, I am 73 and learned more tricks. Thank you again.
I was just anout to order one of those tools you stick under the foot when I ran across this video. If I could hug you I would! Your video did an excellent job of showing me how to sew those heavy seams with things I have around the house. Thank you!😊
I have been trying to figure out how to sew over the hump for months. Thanks to your advice I will now be able to feel confident to sew bulky areas. Thank you so much!
I cannot thank you enough for this tip. You may have saved my sanity and by the end of the day I know my family will be thanking you as well! Going to watch your other videos and see what other genius skills you can teach me! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I'm an amateur and struggle often. This will be a great help as I'm having a problem sewing face masks for friends and family. Thank you for teaching an old dog a new trick. :o) oldbuck
You saved me a bunch, I've always running into many troubles (whether breaking many needles, threads got cut off or get tangled, etc...) when I tried to shorten my jeans. This valuable trick will make me want to sew again. Many Kudos to your knowledge. God bless you, SewVeryEasy!
And I bought a Hump Jumper just the other day and could have used the materials you used for free. LOL Great video and fantastic simple explanation I am new at sewing and have lots to learn and hope to learn a lot just from UA-cam thanks to nice people like you.
What a neat little trick! Never in my life would I have thought that changing in the angle makes all the difference! The very same day I have seen your video I had problem like this, used a thick layer of fabric to change the angle and :"voila!" perfect seam! Thank you for saving my project and my sanity! Btw, I love your UA-cam channel! It is very inspiring!
Thank you so much for this tip. I bought a J or leveling foot for my Singer sewing machine but the diametre of the snap-on bar was a fraction too thin, so it would not lock on and hold. This tip solves the problem.
Laura, this is the best tip I have ever seen to go over jeans thicknesses. I was just doing a jean hem today, it even broke my needle ,it was just loose stitches also a mess and I had to pull it out. Thank you so much for that , I can use it for other thick projects I make ..... 🌹❤️🌹❤️👍🏻
I still have not made my first item on my Singer, but I love all your videos and this was exactly what I needed to know .......you truly are the BEST and THANK YOU!
Wow thank you! This solved my problem. I thought I needed a thicker needle but I was wrong. This helped me with a thicker portion of my face mask where I needed to sew a seam for the elastic to go through.
There is a story about Albert Einstein, true or not, that involves a reporter who asked Albert a question that Einstein could not answer off the top of his head. The reporter scoffed at Albert and said to him, "I thought you were a genius". To which, Albert is reputed to have replied, "A genius is NOT someone who knows EVERYTHING.......but rather is someone who knows enough intelligent people who COLLECTIVELY do." Welcome to my "Genius List" of intelligent folks, Laura. The instant I finished watching this quick tutorial, I went into the sewing machine and made me a "hump buster" from scrap fabric. Thanks for your efforts in making this, and your other video tutorials. Now subscribed.
Thank you so much for your video! I always thought I had this problem because my sewing machine was not the "top of the line" model that could handle tough sewing jobs!
Saw this last night just before my daughter bought me her new jeans with a pleease it worked so well I am off to find your other tips. Thanks for sharing
This tip really works, thanks Laura, it was most helpful yesterday as I grabbed a padded nail file and it stitched perfectly through the very thick part no problem. Thank you.
Oh wow, thanks so much for this tip, 🥰👍🏽 I have been sewing so many facemask and I always have trouble with the bulky elastic.... it’s so frustrating, thanks for this great tutorial tip!!!🥰👍🏽
Hello! Just wanted to say thank you for this video. Also to say that, I couldn’t find a nail file, so I used a small sticky note pad! I hope that helps someone.
qhloverr glad I could help, When you are having troubles just, Breath, relax, know that we all have troubles but once we get it right it's amazing. keep up the good work
Years ago I bought a “Jean-a-ma-jig” little piece of hard plastic rectangle with a cutout to go around the back of the needle which did the same thing as your piece of fabric. Wish I would have seen this sooner 😅
This is so helpful! Will this work as well if you need to sew over three or four seams? When I first bought my singer start sewing machine a few months ago it was going over the seams just fine but now all of a sudden it can't handle them and has begun to jam and break needles. I'm new to sewing and I'm so bummed out because I was initially on a roll and it was going very smoothly. I'm not sure how I would handle the padded file doing multiple Seams close together. Thanks again!
Good tips. But you can also use a clearance plate that may or may not have come with your machine. You can buy them cheaply from vendors selling sewing machine parts and feet.
Luv this tip! Thanx so much! I saw your link for this video on Gotinterfacing. Had this problem the other day, I am sure I will use your great tip soon!
I am making dish towels for a neighbor who is house bound and sent over some fabric, a thick, think linen, that is sentimental to her and matches the colors in the kitchen. I have cut out the rectangles, but now I must hem four sides. WHA do I do at the corners????
I’m new to sewing…thought I needed a heavy duty machine to tackle the issue…so to speak: I’ve gotten “over the hump”. Thank you for your great advice!

Thank you so much for this tip. I bought a J or leveling foot for my Singer sewing machine but the diametre of the snap-on bar was a fraction too thin, so it would not lock on and hold. This tip solves the problem.
WOW! so glad I watched this. I have been releasing the presser foot and gently pushing fabric through. This is wonderful.
Laura, this is the best tip I have ever seen to go over jeans thicknesses. I was just doing a jean hem today, it even broke my needle ,it was just loose stitches also a mess and I had to pull it out. Thank you so much for that , I can use it for other thick projects I make ..... 🌹❤️🌹❤️👍🏻
