- Best Tip To Set A Seam Allowance On Your Machine - It's A Game-Changer!
#dressmaking #handmadewardrobe #sewingvlog
In this sewing video, I am sharing with you a game-changer for me in working out my seam allowances on my sewing machine. I was forever using a ruler or sticking washi tape to the needle plate as my guide but this easy and simple trick will transform your sewing, believe me! I'm sure its the same setting for all machines .......
The settings I use on my Brother machine with the presser foot against the edge of the fabric are:
Stitch width
00 = 1/2 inch seam allowance
2.0 = 3/8 inch
5.5 = 1/4 inch
7.0 = 3/16 in
Try these settings on your machine and let me know how you get on.

OMG! I had no idea! I have tried EVERYTHING to get 1/4” seam allowance. Thank you so much.
I have been doing this for years and just assumed others were too. Glad you shared the tip so that everyone could see how wonderful this trick is.
Yes, so have I. I thought everyone would know.
Same here.
This doesn't apply to my machine non-computerised, as changing the stitch width doesn't move the needle, there's a separate control for that and changing width does give me zigzag. Thought it might reassure anyone else with a basic machine.
Yes you’re right Sarah
Yep, basic machine here. But if I ever upgrade...
It is a very good discovery except my machine is too old (non computerized) as well. However I do have a very good needleplate with very clear markings for seam allowances. And I do use painter's tape to extend my seam allowance guides or set ones (like one inch or greater) not already marked.
It works on my old mechanical Kenmore (from around 2001). It doesn’t have right left center button but the stitch width (zero for straight stitch ) changes the needle position. I guess it depends on your machine.
Wow, right under my nose all these years and I never thought of it! Thanks so much for sharing! 👍😊💐
Glad it was helpful!
I have done every one of those things you mentioned so I was eager to see what you would say...... mind blown 🤯... I have never thought to use my stitch width for straight stitches. Definitely a game changer!! Thank you!!!! 😁
I told a friend to move her needle to the right until she had ¼" from the needle and the edge of the pressure foot once. She told me that her machine doesn't do that.
The next time I was at her house, I showed her how to use the stitch width button. She hadn't even kniwn what that button was for. Never opened the user manual.
@@ellenhofer3343 That's hilarious.
@@ellenhofer3343 I tried it but mine was doing the zig zag stitch instead of a straight stitch. Can't figure it out
I think mine does zig zag too when I alter width. Don't understand this at all!!!
Subscribed for this alone! Top tip 👍😊
Thank you! As a newbie this is my biggest hurdle and headache. I find myself watching the plate so closely that my fabric starts traveling away from my intended point. This is such an amazing tip. ❤
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tip! It would be very helpful to use COLOR thread so I can see better.
Great suggestion!
what you do is......@ 3:29
Surprisingly to me not everyone know that you can adjust the needle position with the stitch width. Actually had a discussion with a few people in a sewing group about this awhile back. Someone asked what the stitch width button where for, and when I answered it also adjust your needle position a few people were quite adamant that it only adjusted stitch width. Had to show them for them do believe me.
I've sewed for years and didn't know this. Thank you so much.
I have a new machine similar to yours so your tutorial was quite easy to follow. I’ve not used the memory settings yet, so this is a great place to start. Thanks so much 🤩
That’s great. I’ve sewn for years and didn’t know this 🙀 Thank you so much for sharing
This is actually a good idea. I always have trouble following the seam guides, as they are generally underneath the fabric. The 1/2" seam falls right there on the edge of the foot, which makes it so easy. I'm going to figure out how to get the others to land there also. Thanks for the tip!
Oh, my goodness! This is wonderful. Thank you, thank you!! 🙏🏻 morning thank
90% of the time I use the straight stitch needle plate, so I can’t use your technique - but it will definitely be helpful when I use the regular stitch plate. Thanks!
That's a great tip but do remember that iy only works with the standard throat plate. If you use a single hole throat plate to help reduce although thread nests that we can get then you have to keep tour stitch width at zero.
Thanks for the info!
I have a question others may think it's crazy, but I have to know. How do you have the fabric move so smoothly through the sewing machine?
Same ive got an old kenmore and ive seen videos that it glides to effortlessly. Maybe its the expensive machines
I have a “Vintage ” Singer Stylist 513 (the machine is a part of me, I have had it since 1972) so I don’t have access to those numbers, BUT I can move my needle left, right and center to sew zippers. Your video did provoke me to find out what the stitch widths were when I moved the needle. So yes, it was helpful, thank you!
Contrast thread would be easier to see 😁😁😁😁
You! You have just made my sewing experience so much better!!! This legitimately changes everything!!! No more markers! No more tape! No more guess work!!! All the thank yous!!!!
My pleasure xx
AMAZING! All these years & this is the first time I've heard this tip. Thank you so much.
A 5.6 on my Juki HZL F-300 seems to have done the trick (no 5.5 setting) thank you. I’m a beginner quilter and that 1/4 inch allowance has been so allusive. I was starting to think I just sucked at it. I don’t remember anything from Home Economics class (I’m 51) so I appreciate this tip very much!
You are right my 1/4” seam allowance is 5.5! Took a lot of heartache and frustration to figure this out over 2 years ago!!
doesn't work on my Bernina. If I alter the stitch width in a straight stitch setting, it gives me a zig zag! But I have a similar crib sheet for getting different seam allowances by changes the needle positions left or right.
I have a Bernina too and do the same when with the needle position
OMG!!! I have always struggled with my seam allowance. What an amazing little hack!! I can hardly wait to try this the next time I am sewing. So glad I ran across your video. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
That’s amazing I’m off to give it a go - thank you xx
Wow! Game changer!! I had no idea. Thank you!!! Mind blown haha
My machine's needle doesn't move for this, unless I am doing something wrong. I have an elnita and it only goes to a 4 stitch width. Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong?
Ah my machine won’t do it! If I adjust the width on the straight stitch setting it just thinks I want a zigzag so that’s what it sews! 🙈. Great tip to share though!!
I’ve just discovered your channel and wish I had found it a lot earlier! 😉x
Thank you so much! Such a simple, but brilliant tip! ❤
I’ve been doing it this way for years. I previously had a mechanical machine that I couldn’t change the needle position but found where I needed the foot to be to do a 1/4 inch. Now I have a computerized and I can change the needle position, it’s 6.5 on mine, but my machine doesn’t have memory, so I have to reset my machine if I take a break or turn it off.
Game changer. Thank you!!
**Weird question (Total newbie here) but does this work when using different presser feet? Obviously, you don't want your needle hitting your presser foot. Thanks for the tips
HUH ! I never knew this and you're right it is DEFINITELY a stress reliever to know now that I don't have to dick around with that anymore :) Thank You SO MUCH for sharing :D:D:D
I am failing!
I keep trying to do as you say - I set my stitch width and stitch length, lower my presser foot, and try as I might, I keep getting a zigzag stitch. Please tell me what I am missing, or doing wrong. Thank you ever so much!
Ty i was confused why my needle was moving 😂
You just saved me such a headache! Thank you so much for putting this video together, my project just became so much easier!
Why didn't anyone tell me this? I've been sewing for decades!!!! ha thanks!
Thank you so much! Just starting out so all tips and tricks are welcome! Lesley xx
I’m forever using washi tape because I just have a basic machine. Nothing fancy here to set stitch width.
That’s fantastic! I’m a blind sewer and you’re right, those magnets are ok, but this is so so good. Thank you.
Any suggestions for binding? I can't get it right. I get so upset. I get my quilt done looks great & then I bind it and in my eyes I ruin my quilt.
Oh my goodness!! Thank you for this - you don't know the headache you saved me!
Hi, i didnt know where to put this but the vlog you just uploaded about easy sewing patterns says its private, so we can't see it. Is it meant to be private?
Hi,
Its now public thanks for letting me know x
If you would have used a contrasting thread colour it would be much easier to see
This video saved me so much frustration. I just bought a Brother sewing machine. I know the basics of sewing, not much else. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
You’re a genius!,❤️❤️❤️ I’m new to your channel looking forward to more goodies! 🤩
Fabulous what setting for 4mm please
What an amazing tip! I have always struggled trying to get the correct seam allowance and you have resolved my problem in a blink of the eye, LOL. Thank you so very much.
I'm very new to sewing, so I UA-cam seam allowance your video has made it clear what an seam allowance means. I've had my brother se600 for about a month now still learning.
I literally bought this exact same machine last week & was a bit flummoxed 😆
Thank you very much! Easy as 🤩
Thank you, you're right - it's a game changer - many thanks for sharing.
Wow, I have never thought to use the width now I will practice this. Thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this. I was altering curtains and it made job so much easier. Really enjoying your vlogs and all your advice and tips 😊
I wonder if all brother machines can use your cheat sheet numbers?
Great!!! How did you figure out what stitch width numbers to use for your seam allowances?
I just thought there must be an easy way so played around with the stitch width setting and hey presto! x
using coloured thread w0uld show more
OH WOW! GAME CHANGER! Thank You 🇨🇦
Brilliant! I am definitely trying this! Thank you💞
BRILLIANT !!! 👍👍
Could have used black thread to make it easier to see the stitching and the measurement afterward.
I have been doing this and yes, it is a game changer. Thank you, thank you.
That's not "stitch width", it's the needle position you're talking about!
But I think it's changing the stitch width that is changing the needle position.
What a great tip. thanks. lucy in York
It won't work with my old machine.... if I change the width I get a zig zag stitch not a straight line. I guess this is for electronic machines only.
I do have a needle position lever though and can use that
You must have read my mind! I have just been moaning (to myself as no one else is remotely interested) about just this! I spend sooo much time faffing around measuring and checking , this is a brilliant tip Jayne thanks For sharing 😀
No one else remotely interested lol, that made me laugh out loud, I know exactly what you mean there Jayne x
Just brilliant 🙌 TY!
Fab Jayne I have the exact same machine as you so really helpful for me x
Ok mind blown!! Thank you so much for sharing this information! I’ve used tape, I have the quarter inch foot attachment, which I dislike, and I have the magnetic thing which is a pain! Thank you thank you!!
You are so welcome!
This only would work for computerized machines... those of us who have older machines i.e., circa 1980's are unable to use this method.
Hi, can you not still move the needle as you would for zigzag stitch? If not that is a shame x
@@TheDressmakersCloset i did attempt what you suggested and what happens is that it seemed to want to automatically go into zig zag mode. So ended up having to spend $30 US for a 1/4 quilting foot for my 35 y.o. sewing machine
@@sallyschilling1559 what stitch do you have your machine set on to begin with? This only works if you have your machine set on a centred straight stitch (usually setting 1 on a Brother). If you have your machine set on a left or right straight stitch (usually settings 2 and 3 on a Brother) and you’re trying to use Jane’s settings, your machine may change to zig zag to avoid hitting the needle on the metal plate. That’s my best guess as to what’s happening on yours. You might need to work out your own settings if you have a different make/model but Jane’s principle idea would remain the same.
which number do i set my stich 0n 3/4 ?
I am blown away! Most valuable thing I’ve learned on UA-cam. I’ve tried tape, etc....all frustrating. This adjustment of 5.5 for an accurate 1/4” seam allowance works perfectly! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
This is why I hit subscribe. She was clear in the instructions. The camera was focused and gave a close up of where to line the presser foot up with the fabric. The instruction card was clear as to what I was looking at. If you started a school, I’m showing up online in the discussion board everyday. I have looked up online sewing schools. You can’t find an online sewing school that is completely online. I found only 1. And the other schools want you to go back to high school first by doing prerequisite classes. I would definitely support.
Thank you
2:40 minutes into the video later, which is why I came here. Please cut out unneccessay chatter and get to the BLUF (bottom line up front)! I fast forwarded to get to the point. Great tip. I realize that it's an older video, but please consider using a contrasting thread so viewers can see much easier. Thank you!
Thanks for the view
Definitely a game-changer. This is a fabulous tip, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I have been using this feature but never took the time to note the settings that correspond to my seam allowances. Going to do an accuracy check right now and add a label right on my machine for quick reference. Thanks for doing the work up front for me!
Glad it helped
I will try this, thank you😊
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing!
Great tip Jane. I also use my quilting guide bar attachment set at whatever width I require which helps in guiding the fabric.
Great tip!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Ok, that is worth the price of admission for sure! Brilliant! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Jayne ☺️, I'll definitely be using this guide, it's genius 👍 xx
I know, all those years and never knowing how simple this is lol x
Thank you so much ❤️🙏
Um…wow…THANK YOU!!!!
When you turn your machine on, where is your needle starting at? In the middle? To the left? Thank you
In the middle position set at 00 x
Game changer!!!
He said you seldom use 5/8 but use 1 cm. if your pattern calls for 5/8 do you still use 1 cm?
If the pattern calls for 5/8 then yes xx
OMG you're right, what a game changer, thanks so much. Take care.
You are so welcome
Excellent tip. Was hemming a tablecloth this weekend and used this technique. Beautiful stitching right on the edge. Another great machine feature I never used before. Thank you.
You're lovely!
Thank you!
Very cool! ; ? )
This is genius!
This may be a stupid question but does this work with zig zag stitch?
I would think so but you would need to try it, let me know if it works xxx
great tip but why dont you use a contrasting thread to show up better on screen, cab't really see the light thread that you are using??
thanks for the tip I will ensure I think about this for the next time Jayne x
Genius !
Hello, my machine is Janome 9900 just tried the 5.5 setting for 1/4” seam, that comes out at 3/8” my machine I set it at about 7.2 to get the 1/4” setting.
Genius!!!!
Fantastic tip! Do you have to change the foot from standard?
Thank you no just the same foot xx
Excellent! I’ve always made clothing, but now I’m into quilting and need a 1/4 inch seam allowance. I started sewing when I was 5, with help of course. Now I’m 69 and feel stupid.. why didn’t I think of this? I’ve used a Singer , the same old Singer for 40 years. Then I got a newer Singer and now a Brother. I’ve searched all over for a solution.Thank you so much for making this needle position change so easy for me. My husband will be happy too, not having to listen to my vocal frustration. Again, Thank you so much.
