Five Wheated Bourbons that make good alternatives to the difficult to find Pappy Van Winkle and Weller brands. In my area Weller is impossible to land, and in my area I can readily find these 5. They may be difficult or unavailable in your area, but I hope they are as easy to find for you as they are for me.
Merch is finally available! This stuff is prefect for any Whiskey lover, not just YDB Stans. Check it out:

Wild Turkey 101 is probably the most flavourful, best priced ($41 CDN @ NSLC) and most easily available high-end whisky for a Canadian like me.
That is a great bottle for sure buddy! One of my favorites.
Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
It's always interesting to see explorations like this
Thanks buddy! What have you been cooking up? I always look forward to your cocktail tutorials! Cheers 🥃
We missed the Premiere even though I set alarm 🤣 I want your job of tasting all these great whiskeys. $$$$$
Lol it happens.
Tasting all these whiskeys is a hard job, but someone has to do it!
Cheers buddies 🥃
Yum, love me some wheated bourbon! Gotta try that Fiddler. Thanks for the video!!
Really good wheaters are my favorite. Bad wheaters are reallllly bad lol so I have to be here to help separate... the wheat from the chaff. Wow that analogy was really on the nose.
Cheers buddy 🥃
Nice lineup buddy! Really appreciate you highlighting the Fiddler! Such a great bottle!
Thanks buddy!!!! I 100% agree. I think that is the single closest I have come to Van Winkle no joke. Cheers 🥃
Asked about Fiddler today at my nearest Total Wine and even though they had 4 other ASW products on the shelf and I *know* that the Total Wine in AZ has it...so, could they get it for me. The answer was a swift Nope!
@@tim_1522 laaaaaaaame! So dumb! I don't understand how they can't make a customer happy and transfer something. Cheers buddy 🥃
Can’t go wrong with Larceny Barrel proof!
Today I am filming with a home aged blend that includes Larceny BP. Trying to see if it can compete with some heavy hitters. Cheers buddy 🥃
thanks for sharing your alternatives. Probably lot easier to find. would love for you to do a blind review with those and Wellers line to see how they compare. that would be very interesting. thanks for sharing. cheers
That is a great idea! I did a whole wheated bourbon tournament and Old Rip Van Winkle 10 and weller 12 did make the finals... but so did Fiddler! Out of 9 rounds, Fiddler finished 3rd overall.
Cheers buddy!
As a wheater from KY, I was intrigued with your suggestions. You did well to quite well. I've never heard of the Fiddler but it sounds yummy. All 3 Larceny BP releases in 2022 have been bangers. Don't sleep on Bernheim as a low cost alternative. Wag-wan!
Cheers buddy!i didn't love Bernheim but haven't had it in a veryyy long time. And yes. The Larceny BPs this year have been solid.
On the Fiddler, I would definitely recommend it. It is my bottlw of the year so far. The one I have is a pick, but I have heard the standard is really solid too.
Thanks for watching 🥃
Great alternatives. I’ll admit, I haven’t tried all the Wellers or Pappys but, I love some wheaters. Wilderness Trail are really solid, I know it’s different but Sagamore 🤤, and I agree with Marco on Old Elk-some are funky but are very tasty
Oh for sure! Wilderness trail was my #1 last time I made this list.
The only two of the Weller/Pappy line I havent tried are the 20 and 23 year. I hope to one day remedy this.
Cheers buddy! 🥃
You have to add wilderness trail wheated bourbon. Man the 8 year is going to be delicious.
I had Wilderness Trail in the original video. 100% agree. One of the best available wheaters for sure. I haven't heard about an 8 year wheated. I will have to look into this...
Cheers buddy 🥃
@@yourdrinkingbuddy found the 8 year rye recipe in Prescott. Can't wait to try the wheated Bourbon, when I find it.
@@czrs85 oh ok! Yes I have had both. I just read it wrong. Solid distillery all around.
Wilderness Trail is awesome!
Old Elk Double Wheat is really Good! I tasted it next 12yr Weller and it was really surprising!!!
I just need to stop being dumb and buy one of those lol.
Cheers buddy! Thanks for watching!
@@yourdrinkingbuddy I’m thinking of ordering more and at my price I’m at least $10 cheaper than anyone else
@@yourdrinkingbuddy If anything, once I order more, you can bring me a jar and see if the sample beats your bottle
I’ve debated buying the bottle but tax and shipping means it’s quite pricey. Maybe I’ll pull the trigger.
Nice work!
And the truth is that stuff they distill and age at Buffalo Trace is still the best. I don't blame them for secondary pricing
I 100% agree. BT and Wild Turkey are my favorite distilleries.
There is a reason people hunt the BT stuff. It is good! Blind BT, crushes so many other distilleries.
Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
Rebel 10 year single barrel is a delicious wheated bourbon (tastes like Old Fitzgerald BIB). That and my Weller 12 are my favorite wheated bourbons that I actually own. IMO the hype on W12 is justified. My favorite all time wheated pour is Old Fitz 16. Anyhow, R10 has gotten harder and harder to find and the price keeps climbing up. I believe it’s now $100. I paid $75 last year. I have not seen it this year. If I do, I’ll buy 2! IMHO, you need an aged bourbon to start competing with Pappies and Old Fitzgerald. No matter what, it’s just consolation prizes. For now, pappy is a once a year pour at a reasonable bar for myself. I like Maker’s, but stave flavoring techniques cannot match real double digit aging and premium Buffalo Trace barrel selections.
I heard of Rebel 10 landing recently at my local total wine, but it wasn't on a day I was able to make it. Very hard to find in my area buddy!
If you haven't tried the Fiddler, it is easily the closest I have come to Van Winkle.
But you are right. Nothing is going to come close till they have some older competitors. I am sure Larceny and Makers are aging barrels as we speak. Hopefully we will be sipping Maker's Mark 15 year in a couple years. 🤞
Old Elk is a wonderful pour also.
Thanks for watching buddy 🥃
I haven't had pappy 15 yet but I think Maker's Mark cask strength is just as good as the Makers Mark private selection I had ..The Private Selection was rounder, creamier and maybe more flavor but the Cask Strength has this nice bite to it...For me it's my poor man's pappy daily
I do love MMCS. But it had to grow on me. When I first tried it I found it a bit young and underwhelming. The private sellections I would imagine vary wildly. So many different stave options.
Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
No hate here, but my opinions... I compared regular Makers to Wellers SR long ago and I strongly preferred the Wellers. The Makers was just too candy sweet for me, while the Wellers was more chocolate/caramel. That said, I LOVE the MM Private Selections and they stand out on nose an palate among so many others. I know you love the Blade and Bow so I bought a bottle. It's not bad but a little lighter than I was expecting. A wheater I tried recently that I love is Wilderness Trail BIB Yellow label wheated (thanks SLB). I may have to do a blind with at least the Wilderness Trail BIB, Wellers SR, and Makers 46 (a MUCH better than std IMO choice :) ). Lastly, I've been on the lookout, but have never seen a Larceny casker.
Great comment buddy I want to hit every note... but I have to start out with Wilderness Trail. This last time I made this list, that was my Number 1! Or I would have included it. Didnt want to be redundant. It is an excellent bourbon.
Makers vs Weller sr. Last time I did a blind, I legit thought the Makers was dramatically better and then when I found out what I was drinking, I was straight up shocked.
Every MM private sellection I have tatsed has been worth every penny.
I will admit Blade and Bow might not be for everyone. That low proof excludes many. But for me, I would consider it in the same realm as Weller 12 (not as good but same realm).
I will say, that MM46 will CRUSH Weller SR if you blind them. Maybe not standard Makers. But MM46? Oh yeah, that is a WSR killer buddy.
Thanks for watching 🥃
I agree, Weller SR is better than Makers Mark. Makers Mark Cask Strength is very good though.
Weller special reserve isn’t worth the hunt. I was able to land that and a 12 year in the same haul. Next time I see one I’m definitely passing on it.
I agree. It isn't thst special. The 12 year on the other hand sure is!
Cheers buddy! 🥃
BevMo has a lot on the east side.
If the Makers Private select that is. BUT! Big box stores just have the master distiller send something. They don’t actually go and pick. I get those offers too but why wouldn’t I want to go do the picking ourselves 🤷🏽♂️
I know I would want to pick my own!
@@yourdrinkingbuddy Im working on trying to figure out shipping. I wonder if in the future there could be a your drinking buddy barrel pick 🧐
@@marcot9065 that would be AMAZING!!!
