You don't have to be American to appreciate the fact that this is one of the most beautiful, heartfelt love songs ever written. How much of the junk that passes for music nowadays will continue to move and inspire people after 150 years as this has? Thank you for posting this.

My dad named me after this song, but it was from The Civil War NOT WW2!
In 1997, the string quartet from the movie "Titanic" hit me. My whole life, my dad sang this to me, but the movie featured it as a string instrumental.
Even though my name is spelled with 2 "N's" and not one. I was glad I figured it out. However, my dad died before I discovered this. It's now known as the most sentimental song from the Civil War. And, it's just So beautiful! ❤️ 🇺🇸 🎻

A beautiful and timeless song, one that will live for generations! So much modern "music" is just loud, grating noise, with no beauty or cadence to it. And the modern lyrics - if you want to call them that - are just gutter language.
This is a haunting song that will be remembered and enjoyed long after modern rock has been tossed in the trash heap where it belongs!

My great great grandpa met his sweetheart whilst serving in the war. They say she caught his “good eye” and that was it. He fought, got captured, got paroled and came home. It’s crazy what love will do to people. Sometimes I think we forget it is the young who fight and have to see and deal with the horrors of war. Makes me sad for all those young men who lost their lives before getting a chance to see the fruits of their love and all those sweethearts who lost their dear ones…

Some of these women were real beauties ! See Ella Blocksom Johnson on the internet. Find a Grave has her story as does Wikipedia. Ella was the inspiration for "Lorena ". A true story of lost love. To those unfamiliar with this song; it was popular with both sides in the Civil War. Some commanders forbade their troops to sing it in that it might affect morale . It made the men homesick for their sweethearts and wives. I think that Ella would be a great character for a woman to portray at a local historical society museum. Here in Marion, Ohio , we have Night at the Museum where local people dress in period garb and do first person presentations of local and national historical persons.

Actually, though the lyrics were written Rev. Henry D. L. Webster, after a broken engagement. He wrote a long poem about his fiancée but changed her name to "Lorena", based off love for a Zanesville, Ohio girl named Ella Blocksom (who later married William Wartenbee Johnson, Ohio Supreme Court justice from 1879 to 1886) because her family wanted her to marry someone with more wealth than a poor preacher. Lorena. was MORE POPULAR in the South, while"Aura Lea" was MORE Popular in the North. The MOST POPULAR SONG IN THE CIVIL WAR (AND THE ONE THAT WAS BANNED DURING THE CIVIL WAR) WAS "WEAPING SAD AND LONELY"!!! Not Loreana!!!!!

@@hiimryan2388 yes, and she’s looking as beautiful as ever. We are planning to move from Germany though. Probably to Switzerland or Austria, as the Greens are looking to be elected.

Tom, please correct me if wrong, but I understand that the song was banned by leaders on both sides because, upon hearing it, soldiers on both sides would lay down their arms and return home.

Thanks. There are so many rumors and half-truths of that era but I know how thoroughly you have researched the 1800s. Your coverage of Stephen Foster's music is the most comprehensive to be found anywhere. Thanks sincerely.
Mutual friend, Joanne Cooper is covering your Foster covers.

PBS's documentary says the forbidden song was "Weeping, Sad and Lonely".
      Also great perform.

Don: You may be right or wrong depending on the historian that you choose to believe. I've heard of 3 different songs from 3 different Civil War documentaries that were supposedly 'banned.' They included "Lorena,' Weeping, Sad and Lonely," and "All Quiet Along the Potomac." Your guess is as good as mine (laughs)!

I was just referring to Ken Burn's Civil War. But now i probably will just listen to all the versions available of all the 3 songs and decide for myself what makes me less manly. :)
