Small Car Battle! 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE vs. 2022 Nissan Kicks SR

- Last year we took a look at how the Nissan Kicks faired against its competition from Hyundai. This year we look at how it stacks up against the latest from Toyota.
In this video we compare some of the cheapest crossovers from Nissan and Toyota in the 2022 Nissan Kicks SR and the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE-AWD.
We genuinely love the value each of these vehicles bring to the table. With the Toyota reliability baked into the Corolla Cross and the quirkiness of the Nissan Kicks, both of these would be great vehicles for a first-time driver or someone looking for a bargain.
While we know these two do not compete directly, Toyota offers the smaller C-HR for that, the Corolla Cross is positioned to become one of their best sellers. AND with a 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid coming, the platform looks even more appealing.
Highlights of the 2022 Nissan Kicks SR:
• 1.6L 4-cylinder engine
• 122 horsepower
• 114 lb-ft of torque
• Continuously variable transmission
• 8-inch color touchscreen infotainment
• 7-inch color driver information center
• Starting MSRP: $22,240
• MSRP as tested: $25,980
• MPG: 31/36/33 (city/hwy/cmb)

I have the 2023 kicks and I’m very happy. Mileage is great. Storage is great. Has all safety issues covered. Lots of airbags. The driving and control is amazing. Side notifications and touch screen. Maneuverability is amazing. Better than the Altima. Only wish I had more ports to plug in accessories. I added a heated seat and CD player and only have the one plug in for those.
We’ve been testing the Kicks this week. Videos coming next week.
I bought the 2023 Nissan kick sv it was a close the sr was so pretty in orange but the only difference is the leather interior and 360 cameras , the audio system is amazing the quality of the sound is nice , it’s a very quiet ride , acceleration is fast for quick lane turning , it’s nowhere near a speed demon but it’s a fun to drive.
We are actually in a 2023 Kicks right now. Couple of reviews coming soon!
Had a 2019 kicks 3 yrs in already had problems just traded it in for a Corolla cross L model so happy!
Sorry for your misfortunes. Hope you enjoy that Corolla Cross!
@@GTGarageTalk Thanks 4 or 5 month wait
@@leeh9520 Whew! It should be worth it though
I would go for the kicks. if I wanted to spend 33k for a subcompact suv I would just get a nissan rogue mid sizes suv with more power and more mpg than this. I could probably get the sv trim and the premium package with the options I want for only slightly more money and much more space.
Good choices!
Some of kicks' compressors are meant to broke in a short period of time.
I'm Toyota loyal, but their current situation is a huge turn off. I was on the market for a small SUV this month and the Cross was a 4 week wait and all dealers wanted $10,000 over MSRP. No way. So I decided for the Kicks. My first Nissan. I'll see if Nissan wins me over. If not, I'll wait a couple of years see if Toyota gets their act together.
It is not Toyota. It is the entire manufacturing process right now. Blindsided by parts delays. The dealers are independent entities that sadly can get away with that, but also need to pay the bills with less vehicle turnover on their lots. It is a catch 22.
@@GTGarageTalk Sadly I had to buy a couple of cars this year. Toyota was probably the most frustrating out of all to buy. Their lot has remained empty all this year and prices were ridiculous. When I went to Nissan they had decent inventory and much better price. Like I said, let's see how the Kicks holds up. I will put about 12,000 miles a year.
Transmission alone will make me choose Toyota. But everyone is different. If I were to choose Nissan kicks I will make sure I do the CVT transmission fluid change once every 30k miles. Once every 20K miles if the car is used in the city stop and go traffic all year long.
I'm waiting for the 2023 Toyota Cross Hybrid with more horsepower.
Definitely an interesting vehicle.
Heck yes 💯💯

Low power but great in gas mileage. Our full tank is 311 miles. Very good for city driving. Good in corners even though it has 8 inches ground clearance. Not much fun driving up but fun driving down curvy mountains. As an oldie, having too much safety tech makes me feel dumb. I would turn them off if you want to have a little bit of fun.
I own the Kicks and need more space. Looks like the Toyota is more comfortable. Definitely gona want to trade in
👍🏼
My two favorite cars!!! Thanks so much for the video!
Happy to help!!!
I love Nissan designs. Too bad their cars are not as reliable as Toyotas.
I have a 2018 Versa Note (35000 miles) and my dad has a 2013 Pathfinder (20000 miles). We’ve never missed a service date, and already getting major problems.
I’m trading my Versa Note in for a Corolla Cross soon.
Best of luck to you!
What kind f problems? Also, did you change the transmission fluid and filters at 30,000? Nissan does not say to do that, but mechanics do.
Wow, such a nice review. Thank you so much. I was between these two, and thanks to you and the comments, I'm almost ready to make the decision.
Thank you for watching.
Great review allright. But wrong cars to draw a comparison with. How can you have 2 more different vehicles? The only vehicle to compare the Kicks with are Versa, Rio and Venue.
Id say get a base model corolla cross with more power and awd than the kicks for about the same money. Especially if you live in the northeast where it snows like me. I'm waiting on the corolla cross hybrid.
We are waiting to sample that hybrid.
Lol i live in MN and have zero desire to pay extra for AWD since literally, the roads are always plowed. Maybe if you lived out on an isolated country road or something.
Ugh I’m so obsessed with the Corolla Cross , perfect car , perfect size , but knowing it has a CVT transmission it’s giving me second thoughts from getting it .
Not all CVTs are the same. If/when we get more time with one we will report back.
@@GTGarageTalk sweet
Thanks!
I heard alot of bad things when it comes to Nissan cvt transmissions but toyota uses a actual 1st gear then it switches to a cvt so it should be better than a normal cvt transmission.
@@bigpoppa1992 Thanks for sharing.
Toyota is the original cvt and they have mastered it. Do your research before hand on the history of cvts Nissan has a crappy cvt transmission and should be held accountable for the crappy transmissions. I will never buy a nissan again. I bought a new 2022 Toyota cross le after my ford escape was totaled out in a rear end wreck and I was fortunate to receive this Toyota this year with this market and I love it!!!!
Nissan has one of the sexiest design language ❤😍
I really like it in the new Z!
I think Rogue Sport competes with Corolla Cross Sport
Yes. These were just the two closest competitors at our event.
You should’ve tested the CH-R!
Would have if they had one at the event. 😔
It would have been more accurate to compare the Toyota lower trim LE ($24,800) FWD to the Nissan SR ($22,150). Then youd only have a $2,000 price gap instead of closer to $4,500 difference. (Or the Nissan Rogue)
True. Or the Rogue Sport, really.
The thing is I had access to these, not those. 🤷🏼♂️
@@GTGarageTalk Might have been better off doing separate reviews imo, but I still enjoyed this and walked away learning a few tid bits about each vehicle that I wasnt aware of. 😀
Wow!! Kicks 😍😍😍
🤘🏼
the kicks seems more like a hatch sedan? It’s not even high off the ground.
It’s definitely small. Makes for an easy vehicle to navigate traffic
toyota corolla cross is super expensive for its class and feature. If you want bang for the buck then get nissan kicks and save your hard earnd dollars.
👍🏼
Toyota!!! Nissan is not the same as it use to be....
They are making a valiant effort to change though.
They are making a valiant effort to change though.
@@GTGarageTalk nope, they have a long long way to go!
@@GTGarageTalk Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Suburu all in a class of there own! Then there is Nissan.
@@mojavedesertsonorandesert9531 harsh...
You don't have the E-Power version of Nissan Kicks.
Nope
Did you see one in the background or something? I didnt
Apples and Oranges. The Corolla Cross is much bigger and much more expensive. The Kicks' equivalent at Toyota is the CH-R, not the Corolla Cross.
😉
Let’s see Nissan that has a 10 year history of engine despair with CVT or Toyota that never sees the repair shop, my mind is made up
Well, there you go.
100% Accurate
I have a 2012 rogue with 120k miles and not a single issue with any of it
Wrong... nissan 30mpg city and 36!!mpg freeway!!!
MPG: 31/36/33 (city/hwy/cmb) from the window sticker.
The Quashqai is the direct competitor with 141 hp not the 122 hp Kicks lol. Both of the Nissan are underpowered. The kicks should have the 140 HP engine and Quashqai 160 +. Why Nissan!
👍🏼
Nissan 😍

The second I see that Faux News logo pollute my Corolla Cross screen, I'd be back to the service dept. to remove it. "Make this fake news icon go away or take the car back."
❓
I guess real cnn news are for you lol
@@Trucker2083 🤔
If you see CNN propaganda, head to the nearest hospital to get checked for brain damage. All the huge lawsuits they've been losing recently to slander might help a bit. But u still will require a full checkup.
Nissan is garbage
an opinion, for sure.
