Downtown Newton Historic District

You don’t have to look hard to see the shine returning to Newton’s Downtown Historic District. The county courthouse has been rehabilitated. Shops are being spruced up. The Hotel Maytag is getting a major rehabilitation. Newton is undergoing a renaissance of historic proportions, literally. It all started in 2007 when Whirlpool acquired the Maytag Corporation and shut down the local factory. Newton's city leaders knew they needed to rejuvenate the community through quality-of-life programs and adaptive use of historic properties.
