I became homeless in America when Ochukah tried to overthrow Moi from power because my tuition money could not be wired. Looking back more than 40 years later, that was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I learned not to be depending on my parents and sought a job in the coal mines of West Virginia. I will be retiring from a federal job in 1.6 years and Thanks God I was Once Homeless. It made me strong.

As a Ugandan living in Maryland I have made one simple observation amongst some Kenyan comrades here in MD..Alcohol has played a key role in their downfall. Many are battling DUI cases which is the worst for any American whether Immigrant or American born.. a DUI distorts your life and Iam surprised to see it is the same problem haunting fellow East African Kenyans in Boston.
Dear brothers and sisters stay away from alcohol if you know you are going to operate any vehicle because a DUI in America is like a death sentence.Praying for my dear brothers and sisters going through these trying moments to carry through and flourish again.

I really feel sad for those who cannot trust anyone back home to handle business without stealing from them. My sister built an entire apartment block for me and didn't take a penny. She now sends me rental income monthly. I remember when I got stuck with my project, she used her own money to finish it up. I've tried giving her money, paying for vacations and even buying her things but she won't agree to take anything from me. In fact, she's the one who sends me stuff from Kenya. People don't believe me when I say that, they even think she's stealing from me, but everything is accounted for by the agency. I truly thank God for her and all she's done for me over the years

I'm a Jamaican living in the US
and it is not Heaven but neither is any African or Caribbean country for that matter. I've been to Kenya and many people are suffering and some are prospering. There are suffering people in every country. If you have a good job in your home country, stay there and visit the US for vacation.

Life is what you make it. If abroad works for you, nobody should discourage you and not fulfil your life desire and ambitions. If you are smart enough, you should be able to detect and avoid pitfalls that will set you back. Then when you adapt accordingly then its just a matter of time and you will overcome. No situation is permanent if you follow your plan. Also if it doesn't work for you, take the next step and move back. Life must move on and the clock will tick on us all irregardless.

Trust me, these problems are everywhere but, as much as they say “the American dream is just a dream,” there are so many opportunities and possibilities in America. There are many factors that contribute to one ending up on the streets. Something that can happen anywhere. But, like Chams says, there are more success stories than the failures so come with an open mind and be willing to do any jobs. The beauty of being in America is, “the bank manager lines up on his day off without a favor from his coworkers.” What am I trying to say, unless you’re a big celebrity or the president of the US, wote ni kawaida watu. When you come to America, be prepared to be/do anything and make sure you don’t leave people back home feeling like you’re way better than them. In other words, be low key na pride uwache JKIA.

For those with DUI, and its's your only misdemeanor case you have on file, you can go back to the court and request for an expungement.
If the judge asks you why you need it, tell them you have been applying for jobs and the DUI comes up and they can't hire you.
If they ask which field you have applied, tell them healthcare, since this field is the most scrutinized and they need sober.
When requesting for an expungement note that you have overcome your drinking for if you are arrested again you done.

There are many factors that lead them to be homeless, lack of proper orientation in a foreign land to understand how the system works is one of the key contributors, another would be lack if proper transition prep from student to working citizens, the issue of greencards and hope for better greener pastures lacks guidance.
Over extending of visit visa and lack of welcome by the fellow country men ....all I'm saying is the factors differ from one individual to another.

You're over-simplifying a big problem. There are tons of variables that can lead to this. Domestic Violence, job loss with no savings, put out by caretakers, expired documents that can't be renewed, being evicted from a previous rental property and thereby not able to rent another, no connections with knowledgeable people, fear of approaching the system for fear of deportation etc etc. Seeing these comments I am realizing there seems to be a major disconnect between those needing help and knowing the channels to seek it. The streets are no ones friend and regardless of what brings you there you can end up in much worse situations ( or harmed) very quickly if you end up on the streets. Seeing this issue maybe bigger than others know, maybe it's time for a few well meaning Kenyans to set up an email or hotline that their countrymen or women in distress can call or write to and seek help or directions to resources. Maybe aligning that with the Kenyan embassy in DC for starters. Plane tix back to Nairobi are also no joke so for those who want to return their should be an alliance formed by Kenya Airlines and other groups to route their countrymen back home to safety. If no one is willing to fix this it will worsen in a country where one month's rent in US is equal to a year's in certain parts of Kenya. My 2 cents
