  • Learn all about the discontinued Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 in our comprehensive collector's guide!
    The Patek Philippe Nautilus launched in 1976 as the reference 3700, but the Nautilus 5711 was the model that made Patek Philippe's steel sports watch a superstar. By 2021, runaway prices and social media obsession had raised the 5711's profile to the point that it began to overshadow the entire Patek Philippe watch brand. Patek decided to end the run of its most famous model with a one-year edition, the 5711/1A-014. With its famed Gerald Genta design and a voguish green dial, the final 2021 Patek Philippe Nautilus was discontinued with a final flourish of style, and yes, hype.
    Although the Patek 5711 debuted as far back as 2006, it didn't become a hype watch or an object of mainstream consumer fixation until years later. However, by 2017, it became clear to Patek Philippe collectors that the market prices of the Nautilus 5711 had accelerated to an extent that could not be explained by watchmaking improvements to the model or incremental increases in its retail price. Demand from a flood of cryptocurrency millionaires and social media hype meant that the 5711 Nautilus verged on overshadowing the Patek Philippe brand itself. Patek President and owner Thierry Stern realized that a single model couldn't be allowed to shade the company's vast history and collection, so he made an executive decision: the 5711 would be discontinued.
    But before the end of this Patek Nautilus generation, there would be a sendoff. The 5711/1A-014 was part of a trio of limited run 5711 models that included the diamond-set 5711/1300A and the Tiffany-signed turquoise dial 5711/1A-018. The -14's vibrant green metallic dial included the traditional Nautilus stripes, but its verdant color was clearly a product of recent watch industry consumer trends. Watch collectors with a sufficient budget, outstanding dealer relationships, and strong connections to the Patek Philippe brand had the opportunity to buy this watch for its $34,893 retail price in 2021.
    From a technical standpoint the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 includes a 40mm stainless steel case and an integrated steel bracelet. All external details are beautifully finished by hand in a process that adds hours to the production process and thousands of dollars to the retail price. A screw-down crown and sandwich-style case construction endow this Nautilus with impressive 120-meter water resistance.
    While 5711s built through 2018 employed the automatic caliber 324, the 2019-2021 5711 included the more modern caliber 26-330 SC that included a new hacking seconds feature. With 45 hours of power reserve, automatic winding, hacking seconds, quickset date, Gyromax free-sprung balance, Spiromax silicon hairspring, and six-position adjustment, the 26-330 is a sophisticated movement capable of running at least -3/+2 seconds per day when delivered from the factory.
    Today, the 2021 Nautilus 5711/1A-014 is a collector's item of the highest order. Preowned prices as high as $300,000 are common when examples come to market, and the very best examples are considered investments on par with real estate and Enzo-era vintage Ferraris. As a fetish object, the green dial Patek Nautilus has few equals. But for the brave watch connoisseurs with the courage to actually use their exalted timepieces, the experience of wearing the discontinued green 5711 entails the grace, durability, evergreen panache, and horological qualities that have defined the Patek Philippe Nautilus since 1976

      It's really wild that for roughly half of what this stainless steel time only watch goes for, you can get the 3970 (perpetual calendar + chrono) in a precious metal.

    • @johnriesling2207

      it does not feel like a toy. you immediately feel the quality when it's on your wrist. only people who don't own a nautilus say that. they also say the bracelet is cheap...no, it's the best bracelet out there. the finishing is unrivaled for an integrated sports watch.

    When people actually hold and wear the Nautilus, Royal Oak, and Overseas, most will conclude that the Overseas is by far the more attractive and well crafted of the three, followed by the RO, with the Nautilus feeling quite cheap and fragile in comparison.

    • @johnriesling2207
      @johnriesling2207 8 місяців тому +5

      no. people only buy the OS because they can't afford either of the other two. the OS is clearly a knockoff of the other two. owners of the OS look down at their wrist and dream of owning the Nautilus or Royal Oak one day. i know this because that person was once me.

    What gets me is the pristine finishing on a watch crafted in rudimentary stainless steal, not even Rolex quality steel, and massively overpriced. It will get bashed and dinged by some talentless Uber rich influencer long before they suspend their ignorance to appreciate the fine work and craftsmanship that made PPs reputation in the first place 😂

    • @johnriesling2207
      @johnriesling2207 8 місяців тому

      Why is it 'massively overpriced'? Is your assessment based off of economic analysis? I'd say the Nautilus is priced right where it should be seeing how it's at the equilibrium of demand and supply. I'll assume you mean that you think you can get more bang for your buck by buying more complicated watches made in precious metals for a fraction of the price of the Nautilus. In that case your arguement is moot as I can argue that you should buy a $1 quartz plastic watch or just use your phone. After all, mechanical watches are massively overpriced relatively...Art is in the eye of the beholder and the market agrees with the Nautilus.

    • @Pulsonar
      @Pulsonar 8 місяців тому +1

      @@johnriesling2207 The assumption you made is a bit presumptuous and banal. I’m not sure why you brought bling merchant and Quartz into the picture here. All I meant is the PP Nautilus is massively overpriced cf to other historic and excellent Swiss mechanical steel sports watches that have as much character, legacy and provenance. For example, the 1969 Zenith Defy A3642 (the very steel sports watch that influenced the whole integrated steel sports watch genre in the first place), or the IWC Ingenieur SL- designed by Gerald Genta himself in the 1980s, the same guy who designed the PP Nautilus. Even the Chopard St. Moritz, or it’s successor the celebrated Alpine Eagle has a right to rub shoulders with the PP Nautilus in terms of design execution, aesthetics and in-house movement quality. These excellent characterful mechanical watches sell for a fraction of the cost of a Nautilus.

    • @Pulsonar
      @Pulsonar 8 місяців тому +1

      @@johnriesling2207 What you said out the demand/supply makes sense as the ‘small batch’ exclusivity will lead to a hefty premium to control demand for the slow painstaking hand craftsmanship of the watch which naturally limits its supply along the chain. But then you ended up being presumptuous, snobbish and cynical for some reason.
