French couldn't commentate for shit, knew the game inside out but he was frankly awful as a 'tator. Waring was no better, neither were proper commentators but were pushed into being behind the microphone beause there was no-one else apparently. The only decent league commentator in the 70s and 80s was the late great Keith Macklin though John Helm wasn't bad either.
Day I'll never forget. Was 14 with my late Dad. It was amazing. Huge crowd, great game, empty towns.
