Former iOS developer here. Being an iOS dev is hard, because you really need to test your app very well against every new version of iOS. Stuff breaks frequently and you have to be diligent. However, it's a cakewalk compared to developing for Android. I agree with everything in this video.

I wish there was less latency so noodling around on the synth keyboards in-app wasn't totally discombobulating and useless. Recording and audio tracks would be nice too. And more than 2 FX per track. 2 is way too little for drums, for example. I always put distortion and compression, and maybe I'll want a phaser on it as well. Nope, ya can't, lol.

I used to be an Android user, from the first galaxy up to the Galaxy 7 and then my girlfriend at the time wanted and iPhone and we were in an apple store and I was bored and picked up one of the iphones on display with a simple piano open and the minute I realized there was no latency, I was converted and sold my Galaxy and got an iPhone, then an ipad and then went nuts and started my own youtube channel, to join the IOS mobile community and learn as much as I could, so that I could share my experience and recruit other musicans to benefit from this new revolution. Part of this is because of you Jakob and Doug Wood. You have been very influential and both of you are the bomb@ I'm thunbsing up!!!

  • @JuanSanchez-rb4qu
    @JuanSanchez-rb4qu 4 роки тому +10

You left an important factor, I mean its not even cost now that ipads are sub-300 and you can get used ones for much less. The screen problem in android has been solved and the audio standards could be added by google, they do it all the time if enough people pester them (and it doesnt take that many)
The problem is piracy, its really easy to pirate apps on android but apple being all locked down for profitability (theirs) is more safe for devs whose apps are for pro's who can pay the price.

Sounds so familiar. Back in the day, I was a guitarist and wanted to make music on the go and after a few disappointing efforts on Android, I made the switch. Over the years I’ve spent a fortune on apps and hardware. The hardware side have been frustrating with Apple killing of connectors and whatnot but it’s the only way for pro level music making on a phone or tablet.

  • @x-iso

General reason for lack of music apps on Android is latency, it was too large up to version 8 on top of being unstable depending on device so pointless in general to even start developing. Despite that there are few 'DAW's for it that don't really revolve around performing live, so latency isn't as much of a concern. Despite hardware diversity, Google could actually make Android suitable for music apps with consistent low enough latency, but they never bothered or at least not when it mattered. For example on Windows Mobile 10 the latency was consistent, so it was possible to make music apps and that's one of the reasons Figure was ported to it. Although Windows Mobile 10 is no longer used that driver model improvement made possible to have consistent 480 samples/10ms latency on desktop version with native WASAPI drivers, so many Windows 10 tablets actually capable of working with full DAWs, depending on hardware performance (they would easily overload if energy saving profile always adjusting CPU clock speed, but that's usually fixable).

BTW it's a very good video, we need people to speak about this. But I would really encourage people to start coding for Android for the sake of the mobile-music community. It's risky to be stuck on a single platform with no options if Apple stops caring about music-making.

Thanks. This has been a real eye-opener for me. I've been an iPad user since 2012 and have never used Android at all, even now. Music production has only been one thing I've been interested in, having recorded in Windows based software since 2003 and I'm still not quite productive yet in iOS, as far as music goes, to be honest. Just trying to find the right DAW for my needs and my approach has been a challenge, after years of recording in Acoustica Mixcraft for Windows. But, my main field of interest has been photography, and there, I have transitioned successfully from Windows based Lightroom 4.0 with a Nik Software plugin called Silver Efex Pro 2, which I used from 2012 to 2019, to a workflow that is now entirely iOS based, on my 2018 iPad 9.7", using Snapseed, also originally developed by Nik Software (which was bought out by Google in 2012). So, little by little, I am making the same transition to iOS for music, as well. However, I had an idea, late in 2019, that I was going to transition to the world's first Chromebook tablet, the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, released in 2018, and that I was going to use it for photoediting, using Android apps. BIG mistake, as it turned out! I now have the Chromebook Tab 10, but it can't even download my files, let alone enable me to work with them in the Android version of Snapseed. Given that it's useless for photoediting, your video has explained just how unlikely it would be for any form of Android music production, as well. All this time, I had seen and read reports on how Android was supposedly so great for photography and I had just assumed it must be great for music, also. Now, thanks to you, Jakob, I can see why that is nothing but hype and that my Chromebook Tab 10 will likely wind up in my closet, in the big box of digital junk I've accumulated.

honestly, as an out of touch recluse, who has only now within the past year, purchased his first smartphone, and new to making music: I'm blown away by what is available for free to use on this tiny computer that fits in my pocket. My pre-school aged daughter is having a blast playing with grainstorm, recording herself, and making little loops! Nothing to complain about, especially compared to what was available when I was her age (the legendary DX-7 was brand new at that time).

!NEW INFO! - The info in this video is outdated and I am working on a new one. - Right after I published this video (3 years ago) I got in contact with the Founder of n-Track studio (Flavio) over Skype. He develops for a lot of different platforms including iOS and Android. The first thing he told me was that I could disregard from the screen size thing, so fine. Now he also told me that the video was good but that Android platform was picking up and that these earlier hardware problems wouldn’t be an issue soon enough. He didn’t say that the info was all wrong. Android does lack a unified protocol (like IAA, AB or AUv3 for iOS has). Flavio also told me that he was making something called “Audioroute”. It’s basically like “Audiobus” but for Android instead.
Here’s the link for it: audioroute.ntrack.com
    .
I’ve began working on a new video and I actually talked to Flavio again very recently (over email this time) and I asked him about Audioroute. He told me that he made it open source even. It’s right here on GitHub: github.com/AudioRoute/AudioRoute-SDK
    .
Now Android needs the same treatment as iOS and then it needs to be talked about. As I’ve Understood it, Higher end Android devices have the potential to offer a lot to music makers, but it’s got a bad reputation basically. At least that’s what developers tell me nowadays, including the guys form n-Track.

Another pain for the neck on the android platform is pirated software. Developers don't have to worry much about it on iOS, but they have to pay extra cost for protecting software if they release apps for Android. Almost all music production software is "off-line" type, which is easily targeted by bad guys. One of the solutions is making the app "on-line" type but it's difficult imo. I looked for music production software on Google before, then saw many pirated versions in the results. Once we type the software name for the android in the search form, even Google suggests "xxxxx apk"...

The problem isn't hardware at all. It's the lack of a standardized low latency API before Android version 8. Things should hopefully improve once anybody's phones besides Google first-party devices start running it. Meanwhile Caustic is a great app as far as what Android is actually capable of doing goes.

This has been my issue with Android for YEARS!! I would suggest that music app devs create apps for only Samsung devices (because they sell the most devices, and would prob be the most consistent with hardware). I would prefer to have the music apps on a Google Pixel, but there would be no money, because Pixels don't sell very well...So I got an iPad Pro :-( oh well...

  • @hesspet

One of the main problems is the shitty stack inside the Android. No chance to get a acceptable latency for realtime music. Music is not on the main focus of Google. They promissed improvements since 4.0. What happend? Nothing notable. There are some notable apps like Caustic, Heat Synth. But the all have big latency problems. Also in Versions > 8.x.
BTW: The music maket isn't big enough for developer to optimize apps to serveral platforms.

  • @DeRobyJ

I'm honestly quite skeptical that the variety of screen sizes and latency are the reason why not that many apps get developed...
I'm also not sure what you mean by "a standardized protocol for midi". Midi is a standard protocol in itself, apps can take midi signals from existing input streams (like wifi o usb).
What android "lacks" is a way for apps to send midi to one another. That's the same with Windows, and some guy developed loopbe1, an app that creates virtual midi cable inside the system.
I think that it ultimately does not come down to the hardware differences between phones at all. I think it's more specifically a lack of (economic) interest in developing those solutions.
Globally, iOS has a fraction of Android market share, but iOS users are generally more inclined to spend money on apps.
Music producers also generally prefer mac (for historical reasons, imho), and so they are generally more likely to have other apple devices.
So the market share for music producers, weighted on their ability to spend money, is probably far on the iOS side.
It's no wonder that the first big companies to make Android music apps have been Magix and ImageLine (flstudio), which are mostly Windows-centric.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 роки тому +2

When I was talking about standardised audio and midi protocols I was referring to something like Audiobus or inter App Audio (IAA), or AudioKit. Should have said dev kits instead. The reason to why Android didn’t get that was because of how varied the hardware was between the different companies and models of Android devices. When I talked to devs about this, that’s what they told me. This video is a few years old and It might have changed over the years. There is some thing called Audioroute that n-track was working on that was supposed to be for Android what audiobus was for iOS. But I haven’t heard any updates about it yet. Check it: audioroute.ntrack.com

There's only a certain amount of people out there who are looking for the perfect android daw; fraction that amount to the people who have or who are willing to buy that phone brand that exclusively has the daw. It's not pretty lucrative. And that's _IF_ the brand accepts the deal.

It's a shame that Android never took off for music apps because you can run Android on anything, even a high-end 32-core Xeon PC connected to a huge 4K touch screen display. Even beyond the fragmentation issue, there are still many other reasons Android just isn't optimal for music apps. It's a noisy OS, ton of activities going on in the background, constant i/o and nothing is deterministic. Music apps need to get to fill those audio buffers right when they need to be filled, down to the 10s of a millisecond, or you get pops.
The thing though is, while I love my iPhone X and iPad Air 2, purchase nearly every music app I come across (LayR is incredible!), Beatmaker3, AUM, Cubase & other tools that utilize plugins run smack into hardware limitations. Apple needs to bring out a proper iOS "workstation" that focuses on raw performance rather than portability.

Hi Jakob! your vlogs are fantastic, thank you
Its a bit off topic but this one drives me nuts. how come no DAW (beside cubasis) doesn't have audio tracks and gives you the ability to process them like a desktop app. it seems like all of them are good at something good but are weak in other things. for example, FL studio mobile has an amazing midi roll, you can write and edit super fluent like on a pc but no external apps and no audio tracks. cubasis piano roll is super glitchy and unfriendly and Korg Gadget... beautiful synths, great midi editor but again no audio processing possibilities.
    So for summary, why??? :)
    Yours
    Micha

I’m not quite sure why some companies chose the route they did with some apps actually. And I’ve never received a satisfying answer either.
      .
However there a more apps out there with audio tracks that are built around that type of sequencing like Multitrack DAW, GarageBand, Auria and Auria Pro etc.
      .
Gadget has Zürich (IAA) but yeah, it lacks a good set of audio editing tools and leaves a lot to be desired.
      .
I wish I had a better answer, but I guess I’ll have to keep asking questions. 😅👍🏼

I use iOS to make music (because it's the only choice for now), but I think we really need to have developers code for Android now. Most of these problems would be the same with any app, not just music apps, yet there are almost 2x more apps on Android! And they adapt to screen size etc, no problem! You can set minimum hardware recommendations that mean your app won't end up on devices which aren't powerful enough to run them. There would be a few extra challenges yes, but the reward would be a gigantic potential market. What we really need is some sort of AUM/Audiobus. Then everything else could just tie into that. The first person to make this will define how music can be made on Android. And it might save the whole iOS music community, as we don't know what moves Apple is going to make. They removed the audio jack, now if they remove the lightning port for example, then what will we do, pass everything through bluetooth? Then Android would have MUCH lower latency.

If you think that plugins will only work if the phone components are same then in Android all processors are made by qualcom which is the main thing even if not all most of them are made by qualcom and their rams are also made by the same company...if this is the case then how many manufacturers make windows computers and laptops and their sizes and processors also varies so why is that all plugins run on windows and companies have no issue in making any plugins for windows......I think you justification is pretty lame .....companies don't really make plugins for Android for some other reasons or android operating system may have some limitations but I'm sure it's not Bcz of different manufacturers make android phones....

The screen size variety is a moot point; any desktop app or website has faced the exact same challenge since the 90s. The real problem was the unpredictable audio latency, which has been addressed and fixed in 2016. The same goes for MIDI which was also addressed in that same year. But by then, 'Android is not usable for music production' has stuck in people's heads and so it has become a self-sustaining idea. In 2020 I see no reason why your Android music production app should be worse than one on iOS, but very few people are doing it because it's not going to sell very well as the reputation persists, creating a chicken-and-egg situation.

A lot of people mention the Pixel and I think that’s the thing. If mobile Android musicians decided to go just for the Pixel, then the app devs could focus on making their stuff for just that device/model. I don’t think that will happen though when there are so many options out there (brands and models). But a more unified standard device would solve a lot.

Jakob, different Hardware was always the point when it comes to comparison between apple products to others. Like a PC is always an open system and apple just has it's homogeneously product range. Same with android hardware. It is a challenge. No standardized audio interface can be a problem too. This can all be a problem to the seller and buyer. Even more for a professional user. My point is that you tell this in 12 minutes by telling introductions and repeating things over and over again.
Also the android market is very huge and there is a huge demand. That makes it still very attractive to developers. Music DAWs not always have to depend on perfect audio interfaces. Recording for example is not affected by latency at all. And android interfaces were getting better over time. Of course there are several solutions different company's offer and that makes developing not easier. But it is still a market and not impossible to build good android software in an realistic time range. That's the same for music like for other purpose. For example every developer knows how to use different screen ratios today. Not needed as a point to tell more than once.
There are sticks and stones when it comes to both iOS or android development.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 років тому

Yes I understand what you’re saying. However the point of the video was to answer something I get asked about all the time by Android users who keep wondering why music app devs keep choosing iOS. Many of the points in this video is something I’ve had developers tell me while interviewing them. I did in fact interview a developer from n-track that is working on Audioroute that agreed with my video. What he told me was so interesting that I’m working on a new video, featuring him and that interview. But I warn you, you might not like it because I might be repeating myself once or twice or more. 😉

But Apple os is not open source software. I prefer open source software which android os is. That's one of the reasons I prefer Android. Plus there are a few other reasons also. And well I also had android flagship phones for the last 4 years. I had Samsung galaxy s7 edge. And for the last 1.5 years I have the galaxy s9 plus. Both were great phones! Plus if you look at Apple compared to Android on a world wide scale. Android far outsells apple. For one Apple only releases one model of iPhone every time. And not everyone can afford $800-$1500 for a device. That is not a good thing for business. It's one of the reasons why Apple was way in the red at end of 2028! This video portrays Apple and ios as such a great company and software. But it's really not. In fact in 2015 I got my first and last iPhone. I always had android. So I decided to try ios.
