    The words of the low man, the lyric of man when he is at his lowest. A homeless man addicted to drugs and bogged down. His fingers seek his veins and he seeks warmth from the burn barrel. Hard on himself for letting this happen, for letting himself get to this point. He is used to his torment. He is comfortable in his discomfort. Bring this poor dog in from the rain though he just wants right back out again. His penance for his sins is to remain as he is.

    The instrument that is sort of bagpipe like is called a Hurdy Gurdy. It has a crank that has to be continually turned which is what makes that constant undertone, then there’s keys, sort of like an accordion, that you press to make notes on top of that single undertone. It’s a pretty haunting instrument.

      I agree 👍. James has had a long history of addiction to alcohol, others in the band as well, but not as serious. I can see why he'd share this with us all, it's because he wants us to know what it's like to go through his suffering and pain, so that we can make better decisions in our lives and better ourselves. If we learn from the mistakes of others because they shared the experience with us, then shame on us for not learning. I too have struggled for a very long time with alcohol addiction. I've lost some of my closest and most dear friends and family members over the years and didn't know how to cope with the pain.
      From what I've learned, don't ever, EVER!!! be afraid to ask for help, because the people who truly care about you will do what ever it takes to get you the help you need.
      The lyrics in many of Metallica's songs are about this very thing without coming across as preaching. I owe my life to Metallica, without the inspiration to live and fight for a solution to my problems, I would've been dead 25yrs ago.

    • @jamesgarrett4653
      @jamesgarrett4653 2 роки тому +3

      It’s about addiction yes, but also suicide. It’s written as a suicide note for one to read after he commits the act. “So as I write to you, of what is done and to do, maybe you’ll understand and won’t cry for this man, for low man is due.” Key phrase is “of what is done and to do” meaning he clearly hasn’t committed suicide yet, but will have by the time someone is reading this letter. And he’s telling them not to be sad, for this low man is due and ready for death and the release of life. Incredibly deep indeed. A truly powerful song.

    When Load album was created, I hated MetallicA. When Reload was created, I listened it quikly in a supermarket, I discovered this song, and I buyed the CD only for this song. I listened only this song, and Unforgiven, until many years later. I recovered MetallicA when St.Anger, and specially Death Magnetic arrived. So, I love Low Man's Lyric.

    I remember when Load came out, so many hardcore Metallica fans jumped off the bandwagon because “they changed” & “they cut their hair”, but in reality they (Metallica) expanded themselves.

    Hey Dave! What it do? 👍
    I haven’t heard this song in years. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again. Another great reaction, Dude!
    You’ve seem to have a knack of either introducing me to stuff/bands(rap-battles/Slipknot), or re-introducing me to “my toons” from back in the day!
    I’ve never really looked at the lyrics that way. Never really picked ‘em apart before, unlike most other Metallica tracks. And the addiction idea seems spot on.
    I imagine, now, that it’s James speaking to his wife & family about his addiction, and it’s reoccurrence.
    He has had 2 stints in rehab. His most recent was only 2yrs ago. And today he looks as fresh as I’ve ever seen him.
    Respect to my life hero! 👊
    Keep up the great work, Dave! 🤘

    It can be more situations then this example but I like to think of an addicted homeless Vet talking to himself in reference to a relationship with family of perhaps his wife or significant other and for some reason he is "guilty". Now I know that words not in there but you can hear it all through the song. I also consider his apology is to whom he cannot be around for long because he's guilty in that whatever he's done is a part of who he is. The sad duality of life like wanting what you regret or loving what you hate or accepting what you cannot stand... Those sorts of things...

    Metallica’s Load and Reload albums are drastically underrated. Please react to “Hero of the Day” and “Mama Said” for the Load album. This is the period where Metallica got away from fast, chugging metal riffs and more into organic songs that arrived when they sat in for elaborate jam sessions by themselves (along with the aid of producer Bob Rock).

    I appreciate that you talk a bit here and there giving your thoughts about the song as it goes (reaction content, especially music reactions, for me can be hit or miss but i dig this video)
    This is one of my favorite deep cuts from Metallica, really unique, hard hitting. I love the hurdy gurdy in the beginning. The and fantastic vocal delivery by James on the "And I cry to the alleyway" verse, as well as the song in general. The outro leaves you with this weird somber feeling, but almost like theres some hope with the hurdy gurdy outro with the humming (to me). Almost always have to restart the song at least once.
    Im gonna have to check out some of your other videos man, you do metal stuff often?

    • @mfkrwill
      @mfkrwill Рік тому

      Oh right the video is called metal Tuesdays my bad XD
      I saw youve done some Gojira, love them a lot. Theres a band thats a couple levels heavier that have similar themes of wanting to protect the planet, but more of a tongue in cheek anti-human take on it called cattle decapitation. their last couple albums have a strong sense of melody interspersed throughout if youd want to check them out:
      I suggest songs like Pacific Grim (Optionally with the song Ave Exitium, which comes before it on the Anthropocene Extinction album), as well as the "short film" for Death Atlas. Both are very heavy hitting, with Death altas having this grand and sad epic atmosphere to it. And having lyrics at hand like you did here would be suggested since they are further into the Death metal realm
