This album constantly gets a bad rep for not being like past Metallica albums. Which is really unfortunate considering most of this album is nothing but great songs with some filler here and there. Gotta listen to Bleeding Me too.
I love Load, it’s a great album, it’s just very very different from anything they had done before. They went in a crazy new direction with far more blues inspired songs, but they still have that Metallica touch to them and are still heavy. Re-Load, I don’t like so much. Even though they deny it, reload feels like it’s just a bunch of leftover songs that they didn’t like as much as felt were as strong as what’s on Load. I’ve liked most albums they’ve put out, with the exceptions of Re-Load and St. Anger, which is close to unlistenable for me. I understand what they were going for, but I can’t deal with the intentionally shitty production and the garbage can lid snare. Wherever Lars got the idea to use that, should be shot and buried :P
This album is highly underrated because it didn't "follow the Metallica formula" they heard prior.
Agreed. I didn’t feel that way when it emerged, but the truth is, a lot of what makes this record and its twin brother so good are the lyrics, and I didn’t really learn to appreciate the themes of these records until I’d really been through some shite. When I was 14, I hadn’t seen anything, yet. By the time I was 26, I’d been through the wringer. Now I’m 40, and having had two nervous breakdowns, addiction issues, a chronic attraction to dangerous, mentally-ill women, and lastly, a chronic degenerative neuromuscular disease whose complications have taken the use of my legs and the muscles of my neck and shoulders.
Now I know suffering; now I couldn’t give a fuck that these tunes don’t sound like ‘Master Of Puppets’!
I'm a massive old school Metallica fan but this album is actually one of my favorites. So many bangers
I love this song and until it sleeps of this album great songs.
This is probably my favorite song off of the Load albums, and it has some of Lars's most creative drum work.
The little fill before the second verse is too fresh
Yes .my favourite.👌👌👌
Some of the whole group’s most creative work. It’s so different to what was before and after these albums. Reload is my favorite Metallica album period.
Yes what happen here is they change they'd from bob rock to Rick Rubin producer This is thee album tht produced 22 songs and another reload after ter this album is awesome too. Gd day
@@thestørmcrier2024yes this is when they change their producer. Since all the other albums he also played bass for master of puppets abum as well.
You have to do Fixxxer next. Basically the sequel to this song, it in part deals with Hetfield's relationship with his father, who I think had recently passed away at that point, and how he wants to be different and not treat his own children in the same way. Fixxxer is the best thing Metallica has ever written - lyrically, and musically. Sadly, hardly anyone knows about it.
Fixxxer is a awesome song I wish people would react to it
Its absolutely hauntingly beautiful
Oh I certainly DO know this is one of their best - but sadly it has NEVER been played live due to how deep the song is for James... S&M2 was the perfect opportunity but alas no....
Amazing how Metallica make "Sisters"
Melody and lyrics: Fade to black - Sanitarium - One - The Outlaw - Fixxxer
Riffs : Ride The Lightening - Master OF Puppets - And Justice for All
Speed: Creeping Death - Disposable Heroes - The Shortest straw
instruments: ktulu - Orion - to live is to die
Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer are my two fave MetallicA songs. I've been a fan since 85. Born in 65. I cried the first listen, and, also Low Man's Lyric. Mind blown 🤯
This song is basically about the grief James Hetfield felt, after losing his close friend and former bassist of Metallica, Cliff Burton. It's about losing someone that means a lot to you, and desperately seeking for a replacement that never comes. Also, the first Guitar Solo is performed by Kirk Hammett, using a slide. The second one, which is a build up crescendo, is performed by James Hetfield himself. I'd seriously recommend checking out the Live version from August 2019 in Mannheim Germany, it is a very emotional version for James, as he re-entered rehab a few months later after this performance. You can really see how emotional James was during that song.
The first solo sounds like there’s a reverse digital delay on it as well as a prelude to the part with the slide.
@@continentalaquatics2725 this ISN'T a solo, and James Hetfield is just doing it by switching the volume up (and down) on his guitar!!!!!
That performance from Mannheim is one of my favorites by Metallica!!
I think it has more to do with religious upbringing and his struggle with the passing of his parents.
Absolutely amazing performance, the one played live in Germany in 2019.
And it's played a bit faster and there's so much groove to the outro Solo, and so good to hear the whole thing without it being faded out.
fantastic to see this now you need to do bleeding me its a fantastic song
Great song agreed od like him to do Metallicas mor underated song lowmans lryic a song i never seen reviewd but remarkable
Listened to Metallica all my life, but basically unfamiliar with anything after the black album; I heard that song for the 1st time recently, it's indeed a classic.
Im glad you mentioned the drums. Lars gets alot of hate. But he's super musical. This song showcases it beautifully.
His drum fills were super awesome in Load / Reload Era. He deserves more credit. No lars - No Metallica. Simple as that..
@@sylaros9346 Right on bro. Spot on
I've never understood the hate Lars gets
Lars gets hate for not being able/willing to recreate his studio greatness live
Metallica - Bleeding me . Best song from 90s era
That 'fire liquid' is actually much stranger than that description. The cover of Load is an original artwork titled "Semen and Blood III". It is one of three photographic studies that Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling bovine blood and his own semen between two sheets of Plexiglas. 🤔
ps. load and re-load dont get enough credit imo. Its not the hard thrash of the 80s but its still very good music.
One of Metallica's greatest songs. My personal favourite song by Metallica. Gonna love seeing your reaction!
I sitll get chills whenever that Chorus hits
By the way fun fact. This album was born after James Hetfield spent a week or two on a solo hunting trip up in Wyoming or Nebraska and North Dakota or somewhere up there. He started having lyrics coming to him and had no where to drop them down except for on the inside of the cardboard box that held his bullets. Hence the name of the album load.
That’s an interesting fact right there I always thought they were talking about a different type of “load” because of the album cover 💀
@@AlejoAnimations I think the way you thought the album name came to be (no pun intended) is the right one
Thats kinda cool! I always remembered the name coming from the CD being "loaded" to max capacity, hence why they had to cut outlaw torn by a minute 😄
I have these lyrics tattooed on my arm. One of my favorites by the Kings.
Rock on!
Awesome man. The lyrics in this song are amazing
Great reaction. Please do Low Man's Lyric by Metallica too. Great song
Listen this song wit symphony :)
Don't listen to the people saying Load and ReLoad are trash; they were certainly *not* like what the first 4 albums sound, but that's not a bad thing! I love the Blues-y vibe to some of the riffs on these albums, and the slow, hard hitting bops like this and Sad But True (off the Black Album, but still) are just as badass sounding to me as some of their faster, more explosive riffs like Blackened or Master of Puppets
It certainly does not sound like trash to me.
@@whatitdodave Definitely not. It's also not Thrash though, and that's why a lot of Metallica fans don't like it. I think it's essential for a band to grow and to change their sound as the years go by, or else they'll just end up fading away in the background and being relegated to a niche fanbase. Not a fan of the implication that a band who changes its sound has "sold out".
Such an underrated song!! Love that you reacted to this gem! These two twin albums (Load and Re-Load) are incredible.
Bleeding me, low man's lyric are great songs too
I haven't heard this in years, forgot how great it is. Rock on Dave 👍
James Hetfield playing the final guitar solo always gives me FUCKING GOOSEBUMPS! ALWAYS!!
Have you watched their performance of this song in Mannheim, Germany? James totally kills it! 👊
It's on my compilation "WorldWired... To Self-Destruct"
San Francisco's performance from 2011 is also DOPE af
Actually the lyrics are: "I'm Outlaw torn"
Came here to say this!
That bridge is one of Hetfield finest moments both vocally and lyrically.
The song is about Cliff Burton, former bassist in Metallica that died in a buscrasch 1986
Kirks solo on this screams utter agony. It's nothing fancy but the feeling in it just shows agony/pain.
I'm seriously impressed by this deep dive. You've done songs others never do
Commenting before watching...hell yes to this reaction!
James isn't singing "My Outlaw Torn."
To me, it sounds like "I'm Outlaw Torn"
But, no... It's actually "Outlaw of Torn." Per Metallica's website.
I don't know who writes those lyrics on their website, but trust me they're wrong on so many songs... The definitive version of every song is on genius lyrics...check it out there...You're right it's "I'm Outlaw torn"
@@dugmetallica1 last part of the chorus is "And I'm torn"
@@remastered-00-pl yes
I'm pretty sure it's "I'm Outlaw Torn" not "My Outlaw Torn" I think the lyric video was inaccurate.
I'm POSITIVE it is OUTLAW OF TORN.
@@marvinmartian7298 Metallica's official lyrics on their website indeed has "Outlaw Of Torn." I simply can not hear it. Even in the Live in Mannheim video it looks like James is saying "I'm Outlaw Torn" or "I'm Outlaw of Torn." So now I'm confused.
@@williamblackmon9136
Both live performances on UA-cam ( S&M and Mannheim ) he clearly sings "outlaw of torn". May I ask what type of speakers you are using to listen? Full ear headphones that are of good quality ( $50 or higher) make the world of difference when listening to metal/ rock music. In MOP, Cliff always heard "Pancakes" instead of "Fix Me". That's why James says 'Pancakes Go!" during live shows 🤘 Or at least that's what the general rumor is.
@@marvinmartian7298 On the Live in Mannheim video at least I'm positive he's saying "I'm." I can see his mouth form the word. And if he says "Of" at all it's definitely not pronounced.
@@williamblackmon9136
Yes, his exact singing words in one chorus are " I'm outlaw of torn".
Edit: This is true on all versions I have ever heard, live or studio. James is singing the EXACT lyrics when he performs this song. This is a very, very personal song to him. He wrote it when he was in his deepest pains dealing with Cliffs death.
You need to see the live version from S&M (the 1999 S&M concert), include Bleeding me while you are at it. :) Hell just take the entire concert, it is amazing.
One thumbs down from Dave Mustaine
You have to check out the live version of Outlaw Torn with the orchestra from the album S&M. It's next level epic!
No kidding. The little changes for accompaniment mixed with seeing the action as it happens.... this is on a super high level, but the S&M 1999 concert version is so much higher it can't even see the original.
Mannheim, Germany 2019 is better, imo.
@@vannacee26 great version bit I just feel the orchestra adds layers and melodies beyond the original version live
I believe the song is based on a book called “The Outlaw of Torn” about an Outlaw brought up to hate a certain side (the English I think) but then falls in love with an English Princess. The Princess loves the alter ego of the Outlaw but is afraid of his other side. I may have some of this messed up, as I’m going on memory for something I read a pretty long time ago.
You don’t know how excited I get when I open UA-cam to find you have listened to another Metallica song. Keep. Doing. It. Good. Sir.
Did you say "fire liquid" referring to the album cover? lol
I will let you look up what that is and how it was created...
It’s a liquid all right.
But the two kinds used to make it cause it to be very different from fire.
Looks cool ngl
Low man's lyric!!! Heavier than anything slayer have wrote
😂
Hell No Mama said kills any track any thrash metal has ever put out including Metallica
Lyrically heavier yes.
This era of Metallica felt very organic. It naturally followed the Black Album.
The St. Anger era that followed had more aggressive, but simpler song structures that were 2-4 minutes too long. Keep an open mind when listening to that. The rifts and lyrics are solid. Jason had just left the band and they were about to break up during the time it was being made.
Love your interpretation of it, I think this song does have something to do with loss and grief of some sort but I'm not sure what exactly. And yeah this album wasn't loved when it was released, but that's largely due to how far they had strayed from their thrash roots at this point. This song is easily in their top 10 for me
If you're interested in some of the technical details, that "bubble" effect is from volume swelling. Basically just strum the note with the volume off and then swell the volume back up while the note is sustained, it kinda makes the guitar sound like a violin.
They also used a glass slide (like old western guitar) for parts of the solo, like those high pitched descending wailing notes
The reason why a lot of people would say that they don’t like this album is because they consider this to be the point where Metallica sold out. The black album which was the one before this one and this album market drastic change in their style. But it also marked a vast improvement in their technicality. But what people wanted to hear was music like they heard for the last 10 years on injustice for all Kill ‘Em All ride the lightning in master of puppets. I can honestly say that I don’t believe there to be a bad Metallica album with maybe the exception of Saint anger. I also do not believe that you have done any songs from Saint anger but I can’t really think of one that would be good enough to review.
the unnamed feeling?
@@kimnora53 If one must be reviewed from that album the unnamed feeling is just as good as any.
I love your analysis and reaction, this album is the peak of their artistic maturity, the songwriting and musicianship are next level, it's unfortunately overlooked, but many people are starting to catch up with the awesomeness of ReLoad and Load. It's like fine wine, not for teenage kids, but for grown up confident men !
I’m gonna do something crazy and off-the-wall and use a Toby Keith country song to explain the outlaw torn. He sings about Marshal Dillon and lady kitty. the Marshal Dillon loves her he always steals a kiss before he rides away and he never hung his hat up at Kitty’s place. But in this Metallica song this woman is tearing the outlaw. He wants to roam he wants to ride he wants to be a vagabond, but she is tearing that part of him by making him want to stay and dedicate everything to her with commitment. And he is torn between his true love and living his dream.
This!!!
All the haters can hate. Love these albums!!!! This song is a masterpiece and all the others off load and reload are well written and heavy.
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤟🏻
Metallica's most underrated albums were load and reload. I loved the heavy blues influence these albums has. So many gems are waiting for you to listen to.
My favourite Metallica song , it's so nice to see someone react to this and not just the same old songs. Great mix of songs on your channel too. Keep it up \m/
Bleeding Me and Fixxxer is even better than this song bro
That’s an opinion. Not a fact.
@@UltraViolent21 Nope, facts.
@@ianwakers based on what definitive mathematical proof? You are wrong and that is a fact. This is the best song ever written or performed. Fact. Prove me wrong.
The sadness behind (one of the best metallica´s songs) this is so overpowering! BEAUTIFUL!
This album got so much hate back in the day, it has alot of solid songs on it. Especially this one ! \m/
I forgot how great this song is. I haven't listened to this in a long time. So glad you enjoyed it. Love your Metallica reviews.
for me all the songs on load/reload sound flat and dull. but when theyre played live theyre all bangers. the version of this on the original SnM is fakkin deadly.
there is uncut version of the song that is 1 min longer without fading it out, the song itself did not fit fully on cd so they cut down the song to fade in and james solo and longer outro at the end
Now need to do it live Dave 2019 in Mannheim Germany it's Amazing the best I've heard James in along time cause they never sing this long live very much.
This really is a great song. Many more on this album too! Thanks for doing this reaction. I hope you’ll do more from this album, and maybe even S&M.
This is one of my favorites reactions to Metallica's music. I agree with everything you say about it. The guitar solo is so deep and emotional. One of my favorites of all time. Thanks!
You should also listen to S&M2 live version of this song. It's just amazing.
Oh and if you love the drums in this, check out the S&M 1999 version, the drums are way better
Love your comment of "Thick Liquid Texture" the 14:14 mark of the video. That pretty much sums up the cover of "Load". :)
Bro, you need to react to Low man’s due from Metallica... This is a different song, I bet you will like it!
A big hug for you from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Have seen this song live - mindblowing 🤘🏼
One of my favorite Metallica songs. Love the simple, heavy baseline setting the tone and the relatively simplistic guitar riff. The gradually building riff at the end is fantastic. My interpretation is that the singer IS the outlaw torn, and has lost himself and is searching for who he is. He is crying out to a friend for help, to see them, find themselves again, hold them together, and remind them of who they are so they don't lose themselves again. Thanks for your reaction.
Now do it from S&M2, it's amazing!
This was a great reaction, I’m glad you gave it such a positive review. I would recommend you check out live S&M performance of this song. S&M was a concert they did with an orchestra backing them, which made the songs all sound grand and epic. Their performance of this song in their S&M concert is considered one of the highlights. Also this song had to be shortened because at its original length, the song made it too long to fit on the album with all the other songs. So when they did the S&M performance of it, they played the full thing.
I would also suggest the song Bleeding Me, it’s from the same album as this song is. The Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me are like the two big, heavyweight emotion tracks from this era. The two of them make a pretty good pair I think.
Happy Birthday James! By the way that album cover is blood and semen.
Man, are there albums out there that are aging better than Load & Reload? I don't think so
These 2 albums really showcase how much the bang grew as musicians, the timing changes, and the much more complicated structure of the music not to mention the technical playing of the instruments. So underrated, and im glad your reacting to them.
Couldnt agree more. I got the music books for ride the lightning and reload and technically they are worlds apart.
I was waiting this for so long man!! great words about it btw
Do bleeding me the Woodstock 99 live version
Super underrated song.
Fixxxer and bleeding me need to be next!!!!
I just love it when someone looks and thinks about music intellectualy and feels the lyrics and the instruments, and analyses the composition.just an awesome reaction.
This man just exudes good vibes, when he says “what it do homies?” Just lifts my spirits every time.
Let’s get a Lupe Fiasco reaction Bruh, “hurt me soul”, please.
I named my cat after this song, and plan on having a tattoo referencing it inked someday soon when the world can safely open again.
This album and additionally, this song both changed my life 🤙
I was one of the first to hear this live in concert in Honolulu in 98 when they were practicing it for the original S&M, bro it blew my mind hearing it live
Wow, lucky you!!
Man, the viciousness of the way the solo starts always gets me
Awesome pick try the thorn whithin
1996 and it's not called "LOAD" for no reason. lol. it's not a liquid fire on the cover its a different.....liquid. (it's a "load") lolz. and yes RE-LOAD.....no explanation needed
The drums are sick on this song. One of my favs. I would love to see a reaction to Suicide and Redemption. I think you would appreciate it.
Man I never get tired of Metallica I love Kirk Hammett guitar Lars is a hell of a drummer and kudos to the bass players as well whichever one that happens to be
It was with Jason
I like your Oval analogy! Depending on how deep you want to get into the philosophy but your analogy is spot on. Load and Re-load are masterpieces, maybe the hard core thrashers can complain but as you enter your 40s and 50s and re-listen to these songs you finally hear the deeper meaning. I'm impressed by your ability to discern the meaning so quickly. And all that and - oh, by the way you can still bang your head to it! But then again I have been banging my head to Brubeck for 20 years also... Ronnie, Cure, Prince Charming and Fixxxer - All hidden gems not appreciated until you think about the deeper perspective. Thanks for your channel, you turned my old ass (I'm 54) on to Polyphia...
My favorite Metallica songs are this one, Bleeding Me, Sanitarium, Harvester Of Sorrow, Fade To Black, Master Of Puppets, One and The Thing That Should Not Be (not in preference order.)
To me, "outlaw torn" is... a villain who starts to want to be a hero out of love for someone special, like, "I know what I do is bad, and I love doing bad things, _but..._ for you, I'm starting to doubt and maybe want to turn around and be a hero instead..."
Like... "I been a villain, 'cause I had to be, but... but now there's you, and I can't be a villain no more. Now I have to be a hero. _For you."_
I believe this song is sung as him referring to his wife/ girlfriend/whatever. It sounds to me like "outlaw torn" is, both, what he is in reality and what she calls him romantically ("My outlaw torn"), and he's trying to say to her, "I will let you try to fix me, be careful. If you die/fail, I'm a lost cause."
“Fire liquid” I’m assuming you meant the album art.
So.. there’s no other way to say it, but that’s blood and semen. It’s pretty gross, but it’s an artistic representation of “life and death” or “life and pain”, how the two are intrinsically linked.
That Guitar solo at 12:12 is so freaky yet cool sounding, much like the solo in Devils Dance. Great mix of Wah and Whammy pedals.... and what sounds like a mic near a lo-fi guitar amp in a cardboard box with a lot of reverb!
It’s because of the un-Godly talent that we just heard that I’ve always put the c in front of rap.
I like your interpretation of the second verse, and you and I both seem to like those ‘bridge’ sections: ‘(Hear me) And if I close my mind in fear…’etc.
Another great reaction to one of the greatest songs ever, thank you DAVE 🤘 METALLICA 4 LIFE
Misery loves company.... more words from another amazing Metallica song
Check out fixxxer it's off the reload album. Another underrated/hated album, but I love it.
I like your sound descriptions, very thought provoking.
ahahah i agree with u man, all about metallica songs n lyrics specially "load" that was an artistic western rock album ever❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are the only one I listened when you pause between Metallica's reactions and discuss every single thing you are genius we want more reactors like you
You are awesome sir 🤟🏼❤🔥
Just a note the lyric isn't 'My outlaw torn' it's 'I'm outlaw of torn'
Anyway, love your reaction/analysis of the songs you listen to!
what i love about you is that you give me a different perspective to think of from songs I have heard and loved for years. Thanks man
It's about the loss of his mother and searching for a mother figure but obviously never even coming close.
Others said it’s about dealing with the loss of cliff 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
@@whatitdodave I've seen people say that, but I don't think there would be a search to fill a void with a friend, whereas a parent is much more traumatic and he lost her at an age where he needed a mother most. Men need their mom, so to me it seems most likely it's about her. Not too mention his mother is the focus of 2 other songs on the same album
To comment on the drums, I believe Lars felt the pain as much as the rest of the band, which inspired one of his most impressive performances
This is the greatest song they made in their rock/load era. A 10/10 actually
This lyric video is mistaken a bit (I mean, the lyrics in this video aren't accurate at some points to the actual ones in the song)
Great analysis! One of my favourite Metallica songs 🤟
The first time I ever heard this song I jumped at that guitar part was not expecting it o almost never lived that one down
The tone , the tone. Loab and re-load. Try The Memory Remains or The Fixxxer.
This song is about a person's search for themselves , the search for their true self after they were broken from abusive parents
One is the lines”the more I bless the more I bleed” means shooting up
You should've listened to the unencumbered version, the jam at the end is epic as hell
