One important feature about this device is that the screen is landscape native. Unlike other devices like the aya neo for example, where the screen is actually portrait, forced into landscape which causes all sort of resolution issues with many games. But on this device (2024 version) thats not an issue :)
I got a mini laptop a few years ago and there's really something weirdly satisfying about having something tiny that runs full windows and being able to use a keyboard with it.
@@zergslayer69But you have to emulate it and it sucks. It’s completely impracticable over just getting an actual form of a PC, whether it be a desktop, a laptop, or a handheld PC. A smartphone doesn’t cut it.

I definitely appreciate you throwing in that it's not a good choice for most people, though, because anyone who doesn't like clamshells, needs a bigger screen, or has a reasonable budget will have a bad time with this one. @@rowanquinlan6049 I absolutely LOVE! It. I did a couple tweaks that really improve the experience. First set motion assistant to start with windows and start minimized. You dont need the app open. Click the windows Audio icon in the bottom right hand corner next to the clock to turn on / off DTS-X. Spacial audio off disables it. DTS-X only works for games running at a higher TDP like 10w and higher. Don't use DTS for lower wattages or you'll get sound clipping.
great review, I love my win mini! One note about mouse mode, the triggers actually speed up the mouse acceleration so you may be more comfortable using that over the trackpad when gaming.
Recently bought the 7840U version of this and I love it, runs CAD, Tekla BIM Software, Bluebeam Revu, Idea Statica and I can just play video games whenever I want. GTA V was my first install on it and it plays great. kinda wish the sticks were on the inside rather than the outside. Especially since X and A are usually the main contextual buttons since on a normal controller they're closer to the stick. With this layout you have to stretch further to do the actions that are meant to be quick. Nevermind the fact you've got to get passed your own muscle memory to go left instead of right.
I've owned one for several months. The controls are quite compact so you don't actually have to stretch nearly as much as you might expect. It took me about 2 days to get used to the side by side controls.

I switched out my ROG Ally for an AyaNeo Slide specifically because of those Windows hiccups dealing with an on screen keyboard. I could see using this guy for the same reason.

People were all raving about how revolutionary the Steam Deck are, but those people don't know that UMPC had existed for a very long time, and Valve and the major PC brands doesn't understand this concept as well as GPD does.
Great review, and a great device 👍 . However, for me there is one downside is the operating system. If it was possible to choose the SteamOs version instead of the Windows version, I wouldn't hesitate. So people who would prefer StemOS have to wait for the community to release an alternative. I wish a company would come out with an ultra budget handheld pc game thingy. I just want a decent enough x86 to run Morrowind and Deus Ex. GPDs and Steam Decks seem like overkill
I had the very first GPD Win back in college and absolutely loved it, until its battery puffed and I sold it to a friend who wanted to replace the battery, and I bought a Switch. I really loved the form factor of the original GPD win so I'm hyped that they're back to the clamshell design. At the time I had the GPD Win, it was the only real name in handheld PCs, we didn't have a Steam Deck, or an Aya Neo nothin, or any of the options we have now. Excited to see how this bad boy feels. The only one I'm really looking at is the Steam Deck because of the trackpads, but this is definitely a contender... my rule of thumb (hah), is that if I can't play FTL: Faster Than Light on a handheld gaming PC (IE, it doesn't have a trackpad), I'm out.
I've always wanted one of these things but haven't gotten one because I probably wouldn't use it that much. Once my crypto goes up more i'll pull the trigger!
GPD doesn't get enough attention! I'm still a Win Max 2 fan though. I would never put the Win Mini in my pocket, it would be so uncomfortable there and its corners would rip holes in my jeans in no time. So if you don't care about pocketability (i.e. a couch gamer like me), why not get all the benefits of a larger device: 10" screen, 60Wh battery, touch-typable keyboard, and OccuLink. A superior experience all around. Well, maybe except the weight.
Makes me wonder what SOC the ROG Ally X will come with. The 7 8840u is not really that much of a jump from last gen, so ASUS shouldn't ask way too much in terms of pricing.
It'll be the Z1 extreme. The only upgrades on the X will be the battery, ram speed (should be a little better performance) and ram capacity, and some minor form factor and controls changes.
I want one of these, but will probably never bite, maybe when newer models come out. The dpad and buttons seem really far to press. They give me anxiety to look at, but you seemed to play with them fine. They are completely inverted to the Steam Deck layout, which I have gotten pretty used to, I think that layout makes more sense. I can totally see the appeal in this device, and they have came quite far since their previous models. I like the portability of it, the fact you can close it and easily store it, even without a case if you needed to.
