Surf Tips - How to do a Forehand Cutback

  • The cutback is one of surfing's most important manoeuvres. It will be one of the first manoeuvres you learn, as well as the one that you will always be looking to improve on.
    www.tickettoridegroup.com
    The first thing you need to know about the cutback is that there are as many variations as there are surfers in the world! Everyone develops their own style, and depending on the type of wave as well as that particular wave you may need to do a slight variation. Despite that there are some great fundamentals and tips to help improve your cutback. The main things we like are spray and speed, if you manage to spray your friend on the shoulder whilst maintaining your speed throughout the turn you're right on track!
    1. The approach: Your first cutback will undoubtedly be done just heading straight down the line, but as you get better you are more likely to do a gentle bottom turn to head up the face onto the shoulder to start your cutback.
    2. The entry: In order to maintain your speed turn you'll need to get near the top of the wave, ¾ of the way up would be the lowest you want to start from. When you start your turn you need to lean onto your heelside rail, apply pressure on the back foot and most importantly compress your legs and rotate your body. Your front leg will be straighter than the front one initially as you need the back leg more bent to apply that pressure.
    3. The cutback: This is where you make or break your cutback. What you really need to remember her is fairly simple, stay low and look where you want to go. It sounds so simple, but its not! This is the part of the turn where you are trying to draw that line that is going to keep your speed or even increase it if you get it right, the angle that the rail line is digging into the water in combination with the waves energy and the shape of your board all come into one magic moment, when you get it right. You need to really get good rotation here so that your arms are going where you are heading as well to help get extra momentum.
    4. The completion: This is really where the different types of cutbacks come into play, whether it goes more into a carve or a full roundhouse cutback where you hit the lip. Where you look is where you will go so bare that in mind. The full roundhouse requires everything else to have been done technically correct so lets stick with that one for now. In this case once you have spotted where you are going to rebound you need to extend your legs a little to help you get up there and then lift your arms (more rotation) to help you go up the face for the rebound. Counter intuitively, when trying to do a roundhouse you don't rush back into the pocket to maintain your speed, you actually draw a really long line down the face and then around and up into the rebound.
    5. Recovery: The recovery for most manouevres is the same, compress your legs and get low over the board to help you get out of the move and into the next one with maximum speed.
    Common Mistakes:
    1. The most common mistake with a full cutback or roundhouse cutback is to push too hard at the beginning of the turn. Remember, you need to maintain that speed, and there will still be plenty of spray if you get it right!
    2. The next most common mistake links directly to the first one and that is trying to do a cutback with your legs too straight. You need to stay compressed through the turn so that you can still control your board, the second your legs are too straight you can no longer control its speed and choose where it is going to go.
    3. The third one is maybe the easiest to change but the most common in people first learning to do a cutback of any type, and that is NOT looking where you are going. If you want to hold your speed through a cutback and be able to control where you are going to go you have to look there.
    Tips:
    1. Using your hand as a pivot point helps control your turn as well as helping with balance, and touching the wave always feels good.
    2. Don't try and rush the cutback by heading straight into the pocket, really draw it out carving down the face and then back and then up into the pocket.
    3. Make sure that you bring your back arm with you otherwise you will never get all the way back into the pocket.
    4. Always go about 1-2m further into the pocket of the wave than you think you need to, don't be afraid of the white water! You'll fall a few times but then you'll start to get it, make the white water your friend, just watch Slater, Knox and Curren for examples.
    5. (for shorboarders) If you are struggling with the roundhouse then try it on a slightly bigger board than your standard, you'll find out why!
    If you have any questions or want to tell us what is or isn't working or any suggestions then please share them below.

    Very rarely hear motivational phrases on youtube videos, instructional or not. The last little "Get off your chair, get in the water, and go practice your maneuvers", was all I needed to get off my couch and go to the strand for those 3-5 footers today. Thanks dude!

      haha you're a lucky dude, only having to get off the couch and be where the waves are. In germany things are different. He're no waves anywhere, except some little river waves. but cu one day when i get off my couch and take a flight to the waves or even better move to a country with surfable waves ^^

    Where do you put your backfoot? On the very end of the pad or just in front of the little bump?

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  8 років тому +2

      +FM For a full cutback your foot would be in the centre of the grip (depending on how far back you put your grip). To draw a tighter arc you'd put your foot further back but you'll lose your drive more quickly. There are two 'bumps' on a grip, the arch-bar and the kick at the back. For a cutback your foot would be pretty centred over the arch-bar. Make sense?

    I am understand how to do it but i'm a beginer and i do not understand how to start . i mean' when you get in to the water you
    look to the beach and than you turn? or you start Parallel to the beach?

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  6 років тому

      Do you mean you can already stand and ride the face? Or beginner needing to learn how to paddle out and catch waves still?

    • @rhidiandavies1991
      @rhidiandavies1991 6 років тому +2

      Watch some more beginner focused videos my dude. But to answer your question: you can paddle in at a bit of an angle (about 20 degrees max), but as the waves get bigger, and the drop-ins more critical, you should angle your board more towards the beach (perpendicularly) when you paddle in, and then perform a bottom turn in the direction you want to go. In terms of eye/head placement you should always look to where you want to go; so if you're going left after your take-off, look left. Another mistake most people make when learning is to look down at their board; forget about the board and keep your eyes on the wave (think of the board as an extension of your body). Hope that helps bud.

  • @wa1we7
    @wa1we7 9 років тому

    Of course the cutback is very useful to use the wave at its full potential and to keep your speed, but what is the feeling when your doing this ? why do people love doing this trick so much?
    Thank you

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  9 років тому +2

      wa1we7 Hey, thanks for the questions! The feeling for a cutback, is a difficult one to answer because it must be different for everyone! The best thing from my perspective as well as talking to my colleagues here at Ticket to Ride, is the feeling of burying your rail, pushing against your board and that it accelerates you when you do it right! Being able to push against your board so hard and to come out of the turn with speed feels great!
      Why do people do it? The main reason is that it is one of the only manoeuvres you can do when the wave has a flatter section or where you find yourself out of the pocked on the open face. Most waves have a section where they go flat, so it is a really good manoeuvre to get you back into the pocket and keep speed for when the next section comes, as well as that it feels good when you get it right!

    • @wa1we7
      @wa1we7 9 років тому

      TicketToRideGroup Thanks for the answer. And i guess the reason why people love and do backside snaps its for the same feeling ?
      thanks

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  9 років тому

      wa1we7 Backside snaps are a very different manoeuvre and feeling to the cutback. Fundamentally you are leaning on your toes, so that is different, but the purpose is different too. With the backside snap, the main aim is to do the turn nice and tight in the pocket, to bottom turn up towards the apex of the wave, then quickly turn back down, pushing on your tail and then drop back down the face with speed. Look out for soon in another 'trick-tip' vid!

    hey man i need help honestly, i bog most of the time but its dumb because i look stupid because i can punt some airs and do floaters and carving 360s so easily and i cant even do a cut back and do reos pretty easily. when i go to to cut back i always bog up my rail and i have alot of speed what am i doing wrong, i take 4 pumps find that slope on the shoulder i put most of my weight on my tail and front foot but i still just bogg up

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  9 років тому +1

      Hey MethAddict (!?) haha. That's the irony of the cutback, it's one of the first things you learn, but to do them well isn't easy! Considering you can do floaters, airs etc I'm assuming that you surf with quite a lot of speed. Without seeing your surfing it is always hard to know (if you have any footage send a link), but my guess is that you are approaching the cutback with too much down the line speed at the start. Drop down the wave a little as you bottom turn before heading up for the cutback, this will ensure you are in full control of your speed. Next step is to not push hard at the beginning of the cutback, you want to be setting your rail and then holding it. Make sure you rotate, use your arms and head (looking where you want to go is key) to get you where you want to go, but DON'T RUSH IT! You can start the cutback cutting down the face on a flatter section and then around and up towards your rebound, so it's not all about rushing back into the pocket.
      As you start to feel it and are no longer bogging, you can slowly push it a little harder. Let me know how you go! Chris

      thank you! i feel begun to actually get it i started taking off with two pumps and slowly easing into it instead of trying to lay everything into it.i think i was just laying way to much at the beginning instead of sort of slowly laying my rail down thank you so much for the tips! im so stoked no i just have to practice it

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  9 років тому +2

      Hey Pedro, thanks for the feedback! As mentioned right at the beginning of the video there are many variations of a cutback, and in our opinion there is a definite overlap with a carve and a cutback. There is a clear difference, let's say, between a 'down-carve' and a 'roundhouse', but we were happy to use these examples for the purpose of the video. Again, thanks for pointing this out!

      Lu lz Interesting stuff! At that point I see him not bringing his back arm around which is part of the reason he bogged for a second; he only brings it around later. In general there is a lack of focus on the back arm in surf coaching especially on the forehand from inexperienced instructors, but your secret more that is too precious to share? I guess we'll never know :)

    Ur confusing for hand wraps and gouges with cutbacks

    • @TicketToRideGroup
      @TicketToRideGroup  5 років тому +1

      Hey Wozza, thanks for the comment! I have not used the term or heard of a hand wrap, but a wrap yes or a gouge of course! Whether a wrap or a gouge, the fundamentals come from being able to do a cutback, so I just threw a few variations in there to see what's possible. Even a cutback could be broken down into various cutbacks, where you hit the white water etc etc. But I hear you, and thank you, I guess it's time to add some more variations and details! Cheers, Chris
