As always, a GREAT video. I use a vacuum seal Canister that I purchased from Rain Country here on UA-cam and then remove the air using a break bleeder. A variety of jar sizes fit in the canister and it seals those jars as good as any factory sealed jar.

Different systems pull different levels of vacuum. Those brake bleeders, on average, pull from around 17 to 22" Hg. Not a very good vacuum. You want something that pulls around 28" Hg or more. This is what the commercial vacuum sealers typically pull. (As well as 2 stage vacuum pumps).
Allegedly, the Pump N'Seal pump pulls a surprising 28.9" of Hg. That is beyond adequate. Btw, your average Food Saver system is like the brake bleeder pumps. Very few of them go beyond 23" Hg or so.
I have a Weston commercial vacuum sealer (ALWAYS used foil lined bags for maximum gas blocking) and Pump N' Seal system to cover _all_ and any needs I have. But if I had to recommend one and only one, it would be the Pump N' Seal, because it is the most affordable (and reliable!), at around 30 dollars. It doesn't work well for bags, not even their special bags, but it is awesome for glass jars.

Thank you so much, what a great demonstration! you have helped me decide what I am going to invest in and how I am going to preserve food and cook meals. I have seen the 1990s pump-n-seal commercial, and it shows how you can marinate in a few hours Vs overnight and just keeping your current food for your household from going bad too quickly. with the options you have shown this will help me with things around my home. Warmest regards and best wishes...

I was fortunate, a few years ago to find a set of the Tilia smoke color cannisters, including the 8 qt. Also, found that the estate sale, a set of the cannisters with a white lid, like the one you used. *They are out there, just have to hunt for them.* The FoodSaver cannisters also work for most pop top glass jars that have the sealing ring inside the lid. As long as the jar fits inside the cannister, it's worth a try to see if jars of xyz product will work. If it's vacuumed sealed like a jelly jar, it will likely work. That's why I was so happy to find the Tilia large cannisters. The 8 qt will seal a 1/2 gal mason jar.
My off grid backup plan is a manual brake bleeder kit, used with the FoodSaver jar sealer accessory or with a FoodSaver cannister. To go with it, I have an extra set of the jar sealer lids, for just in case. Was thinking about trying the VP05, until you mentioned it being somewhat difficult to take apart. Thank you. My hands aren't as strong as they used to be.

Great video! I have a question/request for trying. I've never seen the Pump n Seal before and I'm wondering if the tabs would work with my USB or manual pumps I already have? Are they really much different than the bag-style flap seals? I just feel like the pump is overpriced for what it is and I would buy the tabs as a stand-alone if they'll work with the pumps I already have. A second question is how the tabs are reusable the way you showed? Does the jar lose its seal when you remove the tape? What covers the hole you made if you remove it?

    • @PrepperPotpourri
      @PrepperPotpourri  Рік тому

Yes, the jar loses its seal when the tape is removed. If removed, nothing would cover the hole. Since I have never used the tabs with other vacuum sealers I am unable to answer your other question.

    Very important/necessary information:
Different systems pull different levels of vacuum. Brake bleeder pumps, on average, pull from around 17 to 22" Hg. Not a very good vacuum. You want something that pulls around 28" Hg or more. This is what the commercial vacuum sealers typically pull. (As well as 2 stage vacuum pumps that start at around $100 US or so).
Allegedly, the Pump N'Seal pump pulls a surprising 28.9" of Hg. That is beyond adequate. Btw, your average Food Saver system is like the brake bleeder pumps. Very few of them go beyond 24" Hg or so.
I have a Weston commercial vacuum sealer (ALWAYS used _foil lined_ bags for maximum gas blocking) and a Pump N' Seal system to cover all and any needs I have. But if I had to recommend one and only one, it would be the Pump N' Seal, because it is the most affordable (and reliable!), at around 30 dollars. It doesn't work well for bags, not even their special bags, but it is awesome for glass jars. (And you can use the Food Saver and F.S. like attachments with the P.N.S. system and forego the pin/hole and check tabs, at least for standard sized mason jars [regular and wide mouth ones]).
Anyways, point is that _not all vacuums are created equal._ A low-medium vacuum (brake bleeders, most Food Saver and Food Saver like in store vacuum sealers, etc) will *_not_* preserve near as well as a medium and medium-high vacuum (2 stage vacuum pumps, commercial grade food sealers, Pump N' Seal, etc).

I have two chamber vacuums. One for primarily bags with a sealer. And another big 2 gallon with a big pump that will do large jars of all types. It's also good for chemistry projects, taking out air from paints, lots of cool stuff. I also have the food saver type of attachment with a brake bleeder pump, but I find it kind of annoying to use 😂 Though it works in a pinch with no electricity.

For me the foodsaver adapters is the most sensible option since I already have a foodsaver and the jar adapters. I seal things in the foodsaver bags more than I do canning jars.
Luckily, the foodsaver I picked up this week on PrimeDay came with not only the adapter hose and also a canister. I bought an older model foodsaver (new in box). I had to get a new foodsaver since we recently moved and my 10+ year old foodsaver wouldn't work in our new country. The foodsaver canister can be used with the canning jars (for dry storage) but also with any sort of twist close jar that will fit in the canister. Old pasta jars, old jam jars, if it fits in the canister and was capable of holding a seal, then it can be vacuum sealed in the canister.

With the Pump N' Seal, if you're using standard size mason jars (whether regular or wide mouth), you don't need to poke a hole and add a check tab, _if_ you have the Food Saver or similar lid attachments, you can put the pump directly over the hole on the top of these.

Over the years, I've tried several vacuum sealers. The Food Saver attachments just never worked that well; the canister was awesome! But it got so worn out it quit building enough pressure to seal. I have a hand pump which looks sort of like the Pump n Seal except it uses the Food Saver attachments and always works. I may try the Pump n Seal for mylar bags (after they're heat sealed). Just wondering if the tabs are "sticky" enough to stay on mylar - my label maker labels can (and have) curled loose. Thank you!

I bought the Avid Amor canister set a year ago this month, and they work very well! I do seal non-mason jars, especially Smucker’s jelly jars by putting them into the canister. I use my Food Saver most, and its hose works best with the canisters. I also have a black one like yours, and it does hurt my hands, but it works beautifully. I wanted a rechargeable because I live in Hurricane country. I would not get the Pump type because I have macular degeneration and can’t see well enough, nor do I want to buy the strips. I have a third type that uses the same attachments as the Food Saver, but their hose does not fit well. The cap attachments are newer and my old Food Saver caps are falling apart so I will continue to use the FS but buy it some new cap attachments because the new attachment’s hole is just too small. Like you, I need my husband around to manhandle the black one!
